[Q] can you differentiate the terms used in android development

hi I am a noob in xda i have been wondering what are the different types of methods used for android development can you help me out?
First I would like to know the meaning of these and what their function is, I have been looking through the internet and I have a really crappy computer that sometimes I am just too lazy to search the internet. I have been looking for instructions on how to root my phone (sk17i) but I just dont seem to understand the meaning of unlock bootloader, custom kernel, flash, root, ROMs, MODs and all the other terms. I just want to understand what the above terms mean and what are their individual finctions. If you could add more or a complete list of these terms I would really appreciate it.
Second is this a step by step process? For example after unlocking the bootloader should I root my device or can I proceed without rooting ? And also can I root without unlocking the bootloader as mentioned is it really necessary to do it in a step by step procedure?
Sooorrry I am a NOOB

[Q] Unlock bootloader on 4.1.1

Hi I'm somewhat an android noob. I owned a moto droid back a few years then I had an iPhone and forgot a lot about android and a lot has changed since then. I now have the galaxy s3 and I love it. I have it rooted and have clockwork recovery installed. My question is that to install custom roms I know you need to have an unlocked bootloader. How do I unlock it on 4.1.1? It seems that most information I find gives details for earlier versions of android then what I have and I don't want to do something incorrectly and mess up my phone. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Edit: Nvm I found a zip to flash to unlock the bootloader. Thread can be deleted.

[Q] Help with unlocking and rooting for a newby.

Hi, I am asking if someone would help me with unlocking and rooting my tf300t because I am new to rooting and flashing. My tablet has not been modified, it is running on the offical 10.4.2.18 firmware update so my tablet is up to date. I need to have a step by step guide of the unlocking and rooting process along with what to download so that I will be able to flash cm10 roms on my tablet. Thank you for your help.
Have a look.

[Q] Need an assist: Root, Unlock bootloader on a VZW Tab2 7" with VRBMI1

Hello, all
I have looked and searched. I have seen a few threads and a few posts, but cannot find anything concrete about this. I even officially bricked a device trying to follow a thread (to the letter).
I have rooted and unlocked several devices in the past, and installed many ROMs before. However, this device is proving to be a pain.
Recently I purchased the Tab 2 (SCH-i705) for a very low price. It was shipped to me running Android 4.1.2 (on Verizon) and the baseband is VRBMI1. I saw MrHyde03's post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558) on rooting and unlocking the bootloader. However, when I flashed the aboot.img file, it toasted my previous device. No power-up, no USB recognition, no nothing. Managed to take it back and got it traded out for a new device. I now have a new Tab2, but the same setup. What I want to do is run the Slimkat ROM.
My long winded question is: can I do this? I know Verizon has made it tough to unlock the bootloader, something needed in order to add a custom recovery. Does anyone know of a method that will allow me to add the Slimkat ROM to this device? I know not many people are using it or developing for it any longer. But any help would be appreciated. Again, I have seen what MrHyde03 wrote up, but I am afraid I will brick another device by trying to flash an aboot.img file.
I did see this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48392009&postcount=1) about using Safestrap and not actually unlocking the device. I am currently doing that on my S4 since Verizon has it locked down. But I would not be able to run the ROM that I want.
Any help or pointers would be great. Thanks for reading and helping.
Cheers!
You can root it, but I don't think you can unlock the bootloader anymore. The root method is linked in one of those Hyde threads near the end. It's not his method... there's a "one click" for multiple devices that works great.

Click to collapse
That's what I've realized. Bummer too. I'll go take a look. I hadn't seen a one-click method. Everything I've seen has to be done via Odin & ADB.
If you happen to find the easy method, let me know!

[Q] How do you root the Motorola Xoom?

Ok, I found a few guides on rooting the xoom but they didn't say which version of android it is, anyhow the one that I am trying to root is running jellybean 4.1.2, and it is the WI-FI only (MZ604) Plus, how do you unlock the bootloader? I also want to know how to fix it if it gets bricked, and how to fix it in a bootloop also how to unroot it in case if I need to send it back with warranty.
Use this tool to do everything: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468298
