I want to root my Nexus S, but guides tell me that it'll wipe everything on it. What do I do to prepare for this? Most backups require root so is there a way I can keep my apps or like an image of them without losing them after unlocking the bootloader?
I think it is impossible to backup everything without root.
Try "App backup and restore "(in play store) . And go backup for messages, call logs and stuff.

My phone is about to be taken away (XPERIA X10) for a replacement in few days. I want to back up everything on it, not just the apps or settings. I want to back up the Android 2.2 which I have on it, all the apps in it with the settings.
I had 2.1, i have got everything ready, such xrecovery and etc.
Could you tell me a way I could also backup my root files (not the sd files).

Is your phone rooted? If so, you should use Titanium Backup. You have the ability to backup all your system files and data files. However, keep in mind that when you restore system files, they will need to be restored on the same version of Android that you had on your original phone. If not, you can have many conflicts on restore.
If your phone isn't rooted, there are several backup programs in the Android Market and Amazon's market that do backups.
Don't know if this will help, but if you could provide more information on your question, you will probably get more specific answers.

As long as it's a replacement of the exact same phone with the exact same OS, I'm pretty sure you could just use something like Titanium Backup to handle all this if your phone is rooted.
I do have my phone rooted, I want to backup everything, everything, so I can restore the phone as it was. Dont worry about the new phone, i can root and get android 2.2 on it.
As said, Titanium Backup is your best bet. If you're talking about something similar to a nandroid backup through your recovery, you cannot restore those across phones with causing major problems.
Backup your apps + data with TB, but I wouldn't restore any system data. Download the rom you're currently running & have your root method handy. Setting back up shouldn't take too long. I'd take screenshots as well to help when setting widgets back up because TB or any other app cannot restore those.
EDIT: Also backup your contacts/calendar through gmail. Go in to your Accounts & Sync settings and choose sync now. Don't restore anything backed up with Google through Titanium Backup, you might get duplicates.

Use back up apps like My Backup Root and of course Titanium Backup is a must have...then move all of that data off of your phone to your PC.
When you get your new phone transfer the data folders back to their original spot on the phone from your PC and install the same apps you backed up with from the market and start restoring.
Restore app data but not system data.

With Titanium app. but I can't backup protected apps I need to be rooted and in orden to root a nexus u will lose your data

I am about to unlock the bootloader and root my Nexus 5. I have had the phone for a long time so I have a lot of apps and data on my phone that I don't want to lose. I need a way to do a 100% backup of my apps, app settings/data, and personal data. I would like to create a custom rom of my phone, then flash that rom back after I unlock and root. Is this possible to create a custom rom backup without an unlocked bootloader and rooted phone? Will this backup everything on my phone like I want or will I need to do something else?
I have unlocked, rooted, and flashed ROMs before on my Droid X and Nexus 4.

Use Helium to backup apps and rest of the stuff can be copy pasted to your computer.

It seems to always run into errors or fail to backup everything but every backup app I have used does the same. The best backup app I have used is titanium but it requires root which makes it useless for this.
Android needs a cloud sync for app settings/data. This would solve one of the biggest android problems. I hate losing my game progress and other app data.

I have used Helium only once when I was full stock to backup some 50 apps and it did it's job without complaints.
Almost all games which I play are synced with Google Play Games. So, even though local phone content gets erased, I can sync via Play Games and start where I left off.
I have synced with Google play for the games that Can but some games that I have a ton of progress in don't have that option. Need For Speed: Most Wanted for example. I lost all of my progress when I rooted my Nexus 4 and then again when I switched to my Nexus 5. I tried every backup method I could find and the only one that ever worked was titanium.
I am reading the thread you mentioned. I am pretty confident in my ability to root and flash. I have used command prompt to unlock, root, and flash several times. I am currently using the skipsoft toolkit because it is easy and quick and I hate typing all of the commands and directories into cmd prompt. I just flashed stock android 4.4.4 onto my Nexus 4 and rerooted it a few hours ago. It did have an issue where the play store service was messed up so I had to reflash it but it is working flawless now. Planning on selling the Nexus 4 so I just wanted a clean and updated install.
I desperately need more storage on this phone.. :crying: The only way I have found to gain extra storage is to have root and use StickMount. I have a lot of info and game saves that I don't want to lose to a data wipe though. Is there a safe root method on stock 5.1.1 that doesn't wipe data?
The reason rooting with ChainFire's root tool wipes your data is becuase it boots to a custom one-time-use recovery (different from flashing twrp or cwm) to install the SU binaries. However, to do this an unlocked bootloader is needed. When the "oem unlock" command (what unlocks the bootloader) is run, it wipes all user data (the /data partition) as a security precaution, because one could flash something like twrp and then use adb commands to pull your personal files or remove the password on your lockscreen.
I cant verify if his works right now, i just got CyanogenMod 12.1 (pre-rooted) up and running, but you could try this: ROOTMaster

Try these 2 apps to backup your stuff, you should be able to backup your stuff without root, and then when you have root you could restore it. Just make sure to move the data from the phone because i believe oem unlock deletes everything from it.
My issue with those backup apps is this "* Users with root access can backup APKs AND DATA!". I have tried using backup apps in the past without root and the apps were backed up but I lost my game saves. Which, is really all I am worried about because I know how to back everything else up without root. I have lost games saves a few times switching from phone to phone without root and it sux. Also, with no data wipe I can avoid the hefty amount of time installing and setting up my phone environment. I do very much so understand the importance of a clean wipe and fresh environment though. With no data wipe and root I could back up app data and then do a fresh install.
It all depend on if you have already unlocked bootloader or not. If yes, just install custom recovery (TWRP) and install SuperSU. If not, there is no way to backup data without wiping your data, beside adb backup command.

So how do people transfer their game stuff to a new device? Does the adb backup command allow you to back up a device and transfer it onto another device? or will their be complications like file placement since it is a different device?
