Hello all.
I was helping my buddy with putting on a custom ROM onto his Galaxy S. I did everything required and got the phone to run CM9 just fine. The issue is that his Volume Down button is always being pressed. It's not a physical press, the phone will always just assume it's being held down. This makes the ROM boot up in Safe Mode every time.
This is an issue the phone seems to have had before I did anything to it. I guess it wasn't important enough to tell me until I asked him about it...
So what I would like to do is either
A) Install a ROM that does not do this. I am not sure which ROMs I could use, but I assume anything built using CM9 will do this.
B) Put the phone back to stock. He is still within his T-Mobile warranty so it would be preferable for him to have a fully functioning phone anyway. The issue I have run into while trying to use the One Click restore is that when I power the phone on with the two buttons and the USB cable being plugged in, it freezes on the "It is not recommended to install another OS" or whatever screen. When the PC detects the USB connection, it reports it as being an non-functioning USB device (tried a few computers and different USB ports. same thing). I also tried installing the required Stock version of a kernel and the CWM version of the stock ROM but it comes back with an error before it can install through CWM.
Any recommendations? I'm not really sure what to do at this point so I figured I would ask before I do something that would brick it.
Take the phone apart and clean the volume rocker. That advice stands whether you have a Vibrant or the SGS4G. Next look under the battery and see what your model number is. If it's not SGH-T959V do not flash anything here. Good luck.
It is the SGH-959V.
Is there a guide on how to disassemble the phone?
Here's a decent guide

I had my power button stuck yesterday. The darn thing just won't pop out. So I took some kitchen decreaser and sprayed on a towel to wipe the area around it. And whoa la, it is as good as new. Remove the back cover when u do this. Let the decreaser soak around the button just a bit. Use a toothpick to get the dirt and oil out around the button. Also clean the area in the back cover where the button is.
Hit the thanks button if it helps. It's my motivator to be more helpful.

I'm pretty sure I bricked my captive. I have the phone-!-computer icon whenever I try to turn it on. I was using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439 that guide to give me the three button fix but when I went to pick up my phone during the process the batter slipped out(it wasn't secure -.-) and now I'm stuck at that icon. Please tell me there's some way to unbrick my phone.
Hold down both volume buttons and plug it in. If it goes into download mode you can just flash with odin. If not you need to make a jig. Search around for both these. Either way, you should be good.
I'm guessing my phone was either a newer or older version so the volume+power buttons won't work to get it into the download mode. I guess I'll try a jig tomorrow.
On eBay I will find 1 for 10 dls or so its always good to have 1 of those next to ur pillow so u can sleep well

That is true, I was freaking out and hoping I didn't have the most expensive paperweight in the world until I started searching around and found that a jig is my last hope.
Here is a guide I made which covers the Phone--!--PC problem..

I had that same problem with my captivate, and didn't realize at the time that mine didn't come with the 3 button fix either. What always works (although you might have to do it a couple times because the timing has to be pretty precise) is take the battery out, plug the USB cord (after you plug it into your computer) into the phone while holding the volume up and down buttons at once. Then (with the cord in and the volume buttons still held), put the battery back in. This will work, even if your phone doesn't come with the 3 button fix.
After the phone works, be sure to flash the 3buttonfix.zip file. Do a google search and find the xda thread on it.
If you are going to get a jig, get it from mobiletechvideos.com. They are only $8, and come from a reliable source. If you get it on ebay you never know the quality. For this problem, you certainly won't need a jig. It is actually very difficult to hard brick a captivate, which is partly due to the fact that the bootloader is unlocked. Be sure you have the captivate insurance from AT&T.

The thing is your guide doesn't say what to do if Odin can't even detect your phone.
As for just holding the volume buttons, nothing happens. just stays at the phone-!-PC icon.
Next time put the battery cover back on before starting the process. Lesson learned.
Get a jiggggggggg

Be sure to do what I said above. The problem is actually very easy to solve but you need the right sequence of button/usb/battery
Phone--!--PC is just a download mode. If the computer does not recognize the phone, reinstall drivers, reboot and pull the battery out, then try again.
Try THIS out. See if that fixes it.
This worked for me once...

Hi, I'm having problems with my samsung infuse... I installed [ODIN][UCLB3] AT&T 2.3.6 Gingerbread with root and CWM recovery option onto my phone using odin, worked fine for a few months.
After that it started to mess up and occasianally brick itself.. so i wanted to put a different mod on, Tried using GTG unbrick and now its bricked...
Every time i try to load either 2.3.6 GB or stock firmware, it works for all of 2 minutes, and bricks itself again.
I have tried everything, except for this. Help?
I'm not sure I'd really be able to help, but people are going to want to know what it does exactly when it "bricks"
Back to stock is usually a pretty safe bet and has worked for me every time I've botched my phone. It almost sounds like a hardware problem if back to stock isn't working. I'm pretty sure it erases pretty much all data from your phone.
Two minutes in to boot up your phone might still be checking your SD card. back to stock doesn't affect the SD card. Perhaps try running without the SD card to eliminate that as a problem.
I think I may have found what the problem is, The modified recovery file is still on the internal memory.. Any way I can get that off? or am i stuck.

Well
Well I did this. It says to re-do the flash and use "Flash Bootloader" Well now my phone wont go into download mode AT ALL. I've tried ever singe way possible.
Phone is stuck on Samsung loop, or when its plugged in, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting and is stuck between a blank screen and the loading bar. I've been trying for hours to put it into download mode, and this isn't the first time this has happened. but everything on the phone is now stock.
Oh, I still got the Rainbow pixel screen when it did boot up...

If it boots, it should go into download mode... be sure you are following the right process... some people hold the power button in and it won't work that way...
DOWNLOAD mode: Power off. Open back cover. Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons - (do not hold power button) Insert battery while holding volume buttons. Plug in USB cable.
It can also be achieved by open back cover, Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons. Plug in USB cable and then insert battery.
thanks, qkster
Edit: You may need to try a different USB port on your puter, remember that you have to use the same port each time for Heimdall to execute properly... good luck.
Umm...

This is exactly what is happening to my phone right now, after I booted up the fix you sent me.
That being the case it is most likely the power button is stuck.
Here is a video that, although it is a "how to" replace the screen, the point is it shows the phone being taken apart thus allowing one to get to the power button and clean it. This worked for another user that had the same problem - hope it is helpful for you as well.

Hey, so I have the infuse 4g on JB 4.2.2, and I want to get it back to a stock 2.3.5. I have looked at every forums, but I want to know if it's possible to do so without a computer. Is there a .zip package that I can just flash as a normal rom to make it go back to normal?? Thanks!!
You have to have a computer to return to stock because ICS and newer use different partitions for everything than gingerbread. Flashing with Odin on a computer includes a file that tells the phone the old partitions and allowing it to run gingerbread.

I am running my phone with the 1.275 release of the Beanstalk. Last month I forgot my phone in my pocket when going in the sea (I believe this is a common problem among people recently). After it got wet, it didn't work at all for over 12 hours. I took it apart and made sure I dried everything. I cleaned all connections with alcohol and put it back together. It booted and it took a while to settle. I didn't expect it to go without issues. All works great except two things:
1. It takes a long time to wake up when pushing the power button. Sometimes I miss calls because the screen stays dark too long and by the time it wakes up, I have already missed the call.
2. When a USB cable is plugged in, it is not responsive. I found a way around it - right before plugging it I wake it up and hold my finger on the screen. Then connect it with the cable and luckily it stays awake during the whole time.
I decided to upgrade to a newer release of Beanstalk and did that by flashing 1.275. I was hoping that this will fix it. Unfortunately everything stayed the same.
Next idea - return to stock and make my way to the Beanstalk again. Well, I can't make it go in Download Mode and two computers couldn't recognize it. I used different cables including the original one, but without any luck. Then I installed a reboot widget from the play store and was hoping that it will reboot in download mode, but no luck again.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? At this point I am not certain if this is just a software issue. It could be a hardware problem as well.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
i have a nexus s 4 g from sprint. it is hard bricked. i tried to root it and change recovery.then it shut off and wont power on, light up at all. I would like to know if i am able to achieve download mode, what do i need to do, what files and how to install to return this phone to stock?? please help!!!
Take out the battery for a few seconds and put it back; then while holding Volume UP (+) press the Power Button.
See what happens...

Nothing. Happens it don't light up or power on at all. It is not reconized on computer either. It's hard bricked.
Make sure the Battery is charging...
How can I make sure the battery is charging when no lights come on at all? All I do know is I had it plugged in for a while yesterday and it got really warm. But no lights whatsoever. The screen doesn't light up at all neither does the led.
??????
There are no notification lights on the D720, but when you plug it in with a charger, you should see a battery bar on the display.
Other than that, you are probably right about hard-brick.
I, luckily, never had a "brick" on the Nexus S, so someone else with experience may wanna chime in. But Google and YouTube are your friends.
Sorry...

Please help me, i have the same problem
been awhile since any action here. saved mine with JIG method once but this time it won't work ??!(why) , in search of a solution again! -> hardbrick #2 on this device!
You guys can try a USB Jig. If that does not help, I think JTAG is what you need.
Jesus... just to revive this thread (and this concept of hard bricking), I think I just accidentally bricked mine as well.
Here's exactly what I did:
One moment, it was working spectacularly - fully stock, but unlocked. I had just listed it on eBay, too.
So I ran a factory reset on it (from the Settings menu), also "erase USB storage".
Then, after it shut down for the reboot, I pulled the battery.
...
That was it. Now it doesn't turn on for anything whatsoever. No device detected on USB when plugged into PC. Remove, replace battery, hold VolUp+Power, nothing. Plug into power adapter, nothing. Nothing at all.
But the back does get lukewarm after a minute or so, as if it's alive in the head but frozen, unable to start the bootloader.
WTF? I also have 2 more of these Nexus S 4G's, and both of them seem to have Flash storage chips that exhibit the same behavior when their chips are placed in (this) working motherboard. They can't boot. When I try to "hot-flash" it by booting the bootloader then swapping the Flash chips, they can't flash anything (this is probably to be expected). So, if I can get my ONCE-WORKING phone back to life, there's a good chance I can get another working as well (one just has a cracked glass, otherwise working mainboard & peripherals).
It's old, yes, but it's a damn shame to E-waste these things for a stupid software problem like this!
this morning my wife's phone that is 4.0.4 stock/rooted was stuck in bootloop only vibrating and showing the samsung logo again and again. i wiped cache and dalvik to try a quick fix since she was on her way out the door which got the phone to boot up. she called and told me that the phone now is re-starting randomly every few minutes. what is the best way to solve this, CWM flashable stock zip or ODIN stock rom?
also im new to this phone i use the og note on CM11, so if you happen to have a link to a stock/debloated/rooted rom or a custom/stable rom please post it. Thanks all
Sounds like you have a stuck power button. Pull the battery and put out back in. If out truss to boot right up the power button is stuck. It's an easy fix to replace the power button. Do it yourself or take it to a cell phone repair shop. I just did that on my rocket. It was $40 to replace
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
This is a well known failure mode on the Skyrocket, and there are a couple of ways to "fix it".
If you are rooted, you can use an app like Button Savior (or something like it) to "press" that button for you. Unfortunately, if the button really is stuck on, this may not help. (Mine would stick for a bit, but eventually open, so as long as I didn't press it the phone did okay)
The other is to just have the switch replaced at a repair shop. I would strongly recommend that, unless you have a hot air workstation and SMD grade soldering iron, you NOT try this one at home. The part is fairly small, and the solder pads are actually slightly recessed, so you really need something like a solder paste to get a good connection without a short. I have actually had some formal training as a solder tech, and even I deferred to a tech at work on this one.
Also, if you get it fixed, check to see if your ROM has an option for using other buttons to wake the phone up. I set mine to use the volume keys to take some of the load off the power button.
