Handscent SMS
Similar to Go SMS without any of the shady data transfers of unknown information that Go SMS tends to do.

I don't want to fill the memory with a bunch of redundant apps.
So I'm just using the stock one.

Handcent for me, too.
Cm10 stock with it's pop up function is enough for me.

If you just dont't want redundancy but want to try an aftermarket SMS app, you can always just uninstall the stock SMS app if you are rooted. Many aftermarket apps can handle the function of being the primary SMS app just fine.
Also....having duel SMS apps is not going to 'fill' your memory. I'd be shocked if you would ever be able to notice a performance difference because you were running 2 SMS apps.

The only thing holding me back from loading up an AOSP rom right now is the fact that I won't have the HTC messaging app.
On my droid 2 I always used Handcent, but the HTC messaging app was always a huge step up from that for me.
So I figure most use Handcent, or GO SMS, is that true?
If I'm using CM7 it's always the stock messenger. Any other rom I use handcent.

I saw your post on RootzWiki too. For what it's worth, I use Google Voice for all texting. That way it's logged in my Goog account, and I can access/reply to all of my messages from any browser and the Chrome extension.

Problem: The stock 2.3.5 messaging app stops me at 160 characters because that's when it is suppose to automatically split the text, but it stops me and will not allow me to type anymore. I cleared the messaging app data and it still does the same thing. I have to send 2 separate text messages, which I may ad is very very very annoying.
Situation:
1. I'm on full stock Nexus S 4G 2.3.5. I'm not rooted.
2. I am using Google Voice and I have updated to the latest version, and I have set it to use my messaging app. I am using the stock 2.3.5 messaging app because that's the one I like.
3. I have isolated the problem to the 2.3.5 stock messaging app. I unported my number from Google Voice, and uninstalled it, and still the messaging app will stop my at 144 characters.
Help me? Is this a known issue? I haven't tried restoring to defaults, doing an RTN reset, or going back to 2.3.4 yet, but I will if that'll fix it. I do not want to use third party application either. I like the stock app and I find this very stupid that this is the only phone that I have encountered this on. I remember this working before, but for some reason I can't anymore. I think I was still on 2.3.4 before though.
Please? Help me out...
You can find a modified mms.apk from cm7 here that allows over 160 characters with automatic split.

I don't think so. My stock mms apk splits messages just fine. Only I have i9023, don't know if it's different with SPH-D720
This is a known issue and one of the things I hated... As stated above there are some flashable mms files that have the limit removed.. But of course I think root and recovery would be needed.. The file I am using works awesome.. So they def do fix this issue.

Then it isn't splitting correctly.

put that in your system/app/ folder with root explorer or adb shell

Okay thank you for your help. It seems that sprint isn't built it automatically split for the nexus, and when you remove the limitation it can't handle it causing the corruption. The messaging program itself had to have a built in thread splitting setting.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Mine did that too at first.. If you change the setting in the messaging app to split the text or add the split counter, it works.. Mine now show 2 of 2 at the end, but it works without the jumbled letters...

You come back and tell me that when six months later you still don't have Ice Cream Sandwich. Why not wait for the Nexus Prime.

I never bothered with freezing it, but you can turn off it's notifications if you're seeing double notifications.
Im not seeing double notifications. I just have two messaging icons and want to eliminate one.

You can freeze it busy make.sure you choose default messaging uninstalled in go sms settings, if you run into issues unfreeze it. I use go as well, but I never freeze default app.

I use Go SMS. I found that Go and Handcent functioned pretty much the same for me, only Go has a 'send later' option that didn't exist in the last version of Handcent that I tried.
I was using Go SMS but then i started using stock after getting the inverted gapps.
Stock TW for me.

Definitely Go SMS Pro. Well worth it in the long run, but plan on spending an initial hour or so getting it set up just right... and then you're golden.
what I miss, and I wish someone would come out with is the app from my droidx that had EVERYTHING in it. SMS, MMS, emails (exchange, and pop3), facebook messages, etc.. all in one app.
there isn't anything like that is there?
Currently I use go SMS but lately u have been putting so many ads into the app.
Just wondering what u guys use.

I don't use sms apps usually and i prefer whats app over a messaging app. Some times i will use default messaging app present in my Rom.

I agree with the op, go sms has been really nice for me, with scheduling features and different led colors per contact. But popup ads are a dealbreaker. I've tried handcent, but it was very slow for me. I'm seriously considering going back to the stock app
