[Q] Why wipe cache etc 2 to 3 times? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Why do people always say to wipe the cache 2 to 3 times when flashing a fresh ROM?
Is there a bug in the wipe code that leave little bits left behind?
If there's no bug, then doing it ONCE is plenty. Anything else seems like ignorance and ghetto science.

It was common practice back when we were sharing a recovery not specific to our device. We now have the correct recoveries and this is no longer needed.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Maybe it is needed process since some noobs been known to ignore the processes or simply forget and results in bad flash. I sometimes I even forget to do a nandroid backup as well and go through that annoying process of setting up everything again.
I had been flash wiping once and no problem what so ever with sk8's.

Nothing is never truely fully gone with only one delete
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

I have been using this practice since SKYJB. It may not be necessary but for the time it takes it really does not hurt either. As a result when installing various ROMS I do not have issues that some have.
So can only be a good practice to take...aside from the couple of extra minutes.

So, the software is buggy? Is there someplace to report the bug?
A wipe should do just that and not leave anything behind.

Once is all that's required, unless you're OCD in which case you can never do it too many times.
Seriously, the benefits of multiple wipes or formats are a baseless myth.

Yep. I've never wiped more than once and have never had any issues. Plus the way I look at it is storage has a usable life span. By doing all those extra wipes you're wasting that life span. Just the way I look at it.

I'm equal parts OCD and paranoid. One of my first flashes on my Captivate almost went horribly wrong (brick-level wrong) because CWM failed to wipe a couple pieces of system data while switching from stock to an AOSP ROM. FC's all over the place, unusable phone, and on the third try after fixing permissions, it refused to boot to the system. Ever since then, wipe x3 for everything.
That said, it's really unnecessary with sk8's CWM and TWRP, and my doing so is merely further proof of my insanity.

Lol tj

i usually now recommend 2x, why..... old habits, ive seen stuff stick after only 1 wipe(rare), i'm paranoid and i forget if i wiped a certain partition or not, if wiping does bork the phones memory because of overwiping then mine, devs and flashaholics phones should of been dead along time ago.

How many flash drives go bad? Not a large percentage but the ones that do do so because of being corrupted. I'd rather do as little as possible to achieve the same result.

Yeah, in terms of memory forensics. With one wipe its easy to deduce your last rom of choice memory. BUT one correct wipe will clear your rom for a fresh install.

Nice guide, good work. Now have a beer!
This is just asking for trouble. You are overwriting and deleting system files that are in use.

Well Krylon I've done it several times and it works. If you actually had this phone you could try it yourself. While I can't write a custom recovery, I do have some experience with android and don't mind using unorthodox methods if it benefits my phone as much as it did.
BTW, what's with all the negative nay-saying?

its not naysaying, but the first person people hit up is krylon when they brick their phones, and he's just trying to limit that until they come up with a SURE FIRE way to do it. Dont take it as an insult
I wouldn't have posted it unless I thoroughly tested it on my own phone. My only thing is don't come in criticizing people who are trying if you've been gone for 2 weeks while everyone else has been trying to figure this out. It may not be the way Krylon would do it, but it works. And if for some reason it doesn't for you, by all means, flash back to stock. The risk is worth the reward.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
perhaps if you would read my tweets, you would see why I was gone for 2 weeks.
As far as being negative, I'm not. I'm saying this isn't a good idea due to the fact you are deleting proprietary system files/drivers that are currently in use, which results in a hardware failure. This poses a risk of burning/frying the hardware or causing the drivers you are copying back over to become corrupt.
Here is an easier/safer way to do this.
Download MagicISO, Download my Tar (which I think you already have), and download the deodexed rom.
Extract the tar
Open MagicISO
within magic, open factoryfs.rfs (you will need to change the drop down to look for all files)
This opens /system
delete app and framework dir's
open the deodexed /system
copy over app and framework dir's into magic
close, retar everything you extracted from the original

I understand feeling pissed about hacking these phones and it not working right. I suggest if you have properly installed a custom recovery that you flash a simple rooted Gingerbread rom. Everything will work like a charm, all features. Make sure to go into clockwork mod, wipe data, wipe partition, wipe dalvic cache and flash the rooted gingerbread rom. Reboot and enjoy.
If you don't like gingerbread and you want a great ICs rom, use the EaglesBlood AOSP 4.04 ICS rom. I think it works great. Some things do not work on this rom though. Because the devs do not have the source code from Nvidia they can not make the video camera work. Netflix will not display video. The wifi calling does work. Data drops have been addressed.
So there is my two cents. Hope that is helpful.
or better yet, if you haven't already, update the phone to the stock 2.3.4 update that was just released and see if it solves your phone problems.
If your phone is in warranty then call t-mobile and tell them how your phone is freezing and yadda yadda. They should exchange it for a new one
Appreciate the feed back. I think I'm done with tmo altogether though. My data speed with them is like 1.5 mbs compared to my buddy's Verizon which is at 11.5 mbs were in Riverside ca

I actually am trying to make my phone use stock 2.3.3 and I find that it froze overnight while charging, froze overnight without even plugged in!!!!!
And the only reason I'm even going for STOCK is because the dam Simple Mobile Sim will not work on CM7. It runs better on CM7 but the unreliable GPS, and other settings I needed to apply just so that it wouldn't freeze anymore.
I moved on the GS2 T989 for now. I'm not thrilled with the phone honestly, but wins points for reliability. Never fails, just works. Only had 1 random reboot in the month I've used it.
I want to give away my G2X to a friend or relative, but I don't want to, because I know they will hate me for it. Its cruel to give someone a phone like this and trash talk and blame Android for it. Its not the ROMS or the OS, its the piece of **** phone.
Thankfully I don't have to deal with it so much on a regular basis.
Ohh I know like I said I'm not blaming devs or android for that matter. I mostly blame myself for going "first dual core phone, err I want dat" and goin and buying it rather than researching first.

LG seems to have some piss poor quality control. I must have gotten lucky with mine, though it had some issues of its own that got fixed by flashing roms/kernels.
To your last point, I will never again buy a phone without scoping out the development and opinion from these forums. Even if it means I have to wait a few months and not have the phone right away.

I've been experiencing the same thing. I get so many crashes, lag, reboots on CM 7.1 stable which is the latest I have been running. Ive tried EB and some others, and they were all plagued with similar issues.
I'm essentially done with Android. You never know what the hell you're going to get as far as how the phone works, and it takes way too much time and effort to get things to work correctly. I just want something that works well out of the box. I had the G1, Nexus S, and this, and I can't stand Android anymore. Google doesn't even care enough about it to update their Nexus line on time.

What error is it giving you in CWM? What version of CWM? In reference to Odin - do you have the drivers installed, usb debugging checked, etc.? Have you tried different usb cords/ports/computers?
I'm not at my phone right now but the cwm error was somethin bout a file missing from /data... I literally just rooted and flashed tweaked to the refurbed one they sent me and all is well, the old one won't be detected in any way by my computer tho n it's been doing funny **** every since I left eclipse.. I know it's not the computer or hardware, but any attempt to flash on cwm OR Odin results in failure.. should I even worry since it looks like stock anyway? Lol idk if they really check at Verizon..

While I would agree is there proof of it happening irl? I personally would raise hell if they did to me. I bought the charge at full price because of the possibility of loosing unlimited. how did I brick my phone??

Updated the phone to the latest PA 10/15 build, flashed SU then gapps. After letting everything settled in, boot into recovery and flashed IX kernel 6.3.6 like I always do after every PA updates, but this time my phone won't boot at all, wont even boot into download mode. Stays on the black screen, won't even vibrate. I tried taking off the battery and plugging it in on the computer and outlet. Nothing works. Its hard-bricked. I sure don't have the money to sent it over for JTAG since I don't get paid till next week plus this is my work phone. WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?

I honestly don't know. Before I flashed the PA 10/15 build I normally wipe cache, dalvik, format/system then flash the rom/su/gapps then reboot. After that I just installed InstigatorX kernel, rebooted then went on to a blank screen, never to turn on again no matter what I do.
I have never experienced this on the previous PA build with instigator X not saying its new builds fault, but thats honestly what I did.
I've had my faults of flashing roms on wrong devices before, but I greatly learned from that. So don't think I flashed the wrong kernel since I only have one kernel saved up on my computer and saved on on my device sd card.
Had your phone been acting funny beforehand? Seems like you did everything right, and others are running the 10/15 PA build just fine. You might have had one of those wonderful fluke bricks...

Never experienced anything unusual and I know I did things right. Only weird funny things that happen to my phone is a few screen flickers on the previous build and I used build.prop to smooth those out. And on PA 2.15 my phone will occasionally randomly shutdown, but gets back on within seconds. I never OC btw. Always keep on stock frequency.
Can I lie to Samsung about the device not being rooted?

I pretty much told them I did the ICS update then my phone won't turn on from there. And that I barely bought the phone from Craigslist yesterday.

Samsung never gives you a replacement device. They will just flash a new firmware to it. If they can't they'll give you a new phone. I'd do it if I where you.

1. Stop shouting.
2. Just do it. Worst thing that can happen is they say no. That said, if they can't get the phone to boot, they'll just send a refurb. If they can get it into download mode, they'll just flash the new firmware and wipe your tracks. Even if they do somehow see that it was rooted (i.e., they boot it into the OS), they'll just tell you that the warranty is void, and the repairs will cost X if you choose to go ahead with them.
Well I sent it in this morning and see whats going to happen from here and then. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.

Question for anyone who's flashed roms before without external SD card.

So probably a stupid question and I'm guessing I already have the answer. When roms come out and we want to flash them, does that mean every single time any pictures, screenshots, downloads, etc I have on my phone I have to backup every single time? I'm guessing the answer is yes but I haven't had a phone without an external SD card slot. I also haven't had a new phone in a long time.
The answer is no. Just don't wipe internal storage. Factory reset also does not wipe internal

You don't have to as the internal storage does not get wiped. It is advisable however to back up every time that you fiddle with your system. Most of the times you won't need it...but there will be that one time that you will...

Hey thanks guys. It's been awhile since I had a good phone that I could flash and do stuff on. Appreciate the answers.
also get used to using adb to flash the roms in twrp. makes it a bit easier than having to move the rom over and then flash.

Been getting pretty acquainted with ADB these last couple days. I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip.

"Factory reset also does not wipe internal"
What? You mean factory reset from custom roms? Because factory reset from stock roms wipe everything

From twrp custom recovery. Which is what he was asking about. Please, don't be difficult.

Thank you. That seems to be similar to the regular side load but with TWRP it looks like. I was messing around with the regular side load the last couple days with Android Q. By the time roms come out, I'll be nice and ready with all the tips and messing around with it myself.

I hope so. The pixel 2xl was notoriously difficult and finicky. What worked with my device may not work with the next. Hope that we don't have that kinda experience with the 3a

Battery cases abound. I'd kill for a micro-SD case for the pixel phones. Throw a card in, put the case on, boom: internal storage. Wouldn't have to be too thick of a case, righter - they could probably make a decently thin case if all they are adding is the microSD slot and power/data passthru for the USB-C...
...or even a tiny flash-drive with US-C/Data passthru that I could just leave connected to the device.

Hopefully. I haven't had a good phone to flash roms in awhile. Really hoping we get some good ones on this. And it would be nice if it wasn't difficult like the 2xl problems you're talking about.

Man, that would be amazing. I'm still wondering if I'm gonna get a case. I'm usually really good with my phones.
oh another thing that comes in real handy when you dont have an sd card is a smb share or network drive/nas. i will move stuff to mine from my pc and then just move it to my phone using solid explorer(lots of other file managers support this too). works really fast, especially if you have a router that supports ac wireless
Just a question... I obviously don't have my 3a yet. Need to wait until next month, but isn't the 3a full VNDK treble? If so wouldn't flashing a GSI work just fine? I.E.: "fastboot flash system GSI.img"?
