So anyone understand what this article is talking about?
http://www.softwaredownloadsguide.com/2011/02/htc-inspire-4g-htc-inspire-4g-on-att-release-date/
Here is the part I am curious about:
AT&T will charge monthly data plans for the HTC Inspire 4G will price $15 for 200MB of data and $25 per month for 2GB data plan. Data can be use through Hotspot capacity from Datapro Tethering plan for the user data allowance. HTC Inspire 4G will be available on AT&T stores and online from 13th February at price $99.99 with two years contract.

So does this mean that people with unlimited plans at $30 a month should be ok to tether their laptops via wifi?
No, you need a data pro plan with tethering. $45 for 4gb of data.
so i wonder if there will be a way around that cause i currently have a unlimited data plan and really don't want to pay for the tethering plan (have been using WMWifirouter for WM 6.5). Any ideas to help me out being a cheepskate!?

PDA.Net is an option since you have an unlimited plan.
once we get root (assuming we do) are there other tethering options (you will have to pardon me as i am still new to android). When i did searches there is some material on the subject but from what i understand the phone has to be rooted for these to work.

Yes once you root your phone you will have other options to choose from such as Android Wifi tether.
thanks.. now if the predictions continue at the same rate of what i continue to read the phone will be rooted before i ever get it home from the store
PDA.net is wired tethering, not a wifi hotspot
Ya I have the $30 unlimited data with AT&T. Using the HD2 Australian version (android OS) I am able to use the Wi-Fi Hotspot app, only problem is where I live they don't use 850 for 3G so I only have EDGE. I am really looking forward to what can be done with the Inspire, because having such an amazing phone kind of sucks with such slow data speeds.
This is something I am very interested in also. I am assuming the wifi tethering that ATT is talking about it the MobileAP that is already present on damn near every 2.2 rom. I heard that they are going to have a setting that will let ATT control whether your INSPIRE 4g will be able to use this feature. I am on the unlimited plan now with my craptivate and was just thinking about buying it off contract and dropping my sim in. does anyone think that this might be an issue?
My only worry is that ATT tries to screw you in almost every way possible if they think they can make more money off you. Technically we shouldn't have to pay for tethering IMHO we are already paying for the data why should it matter how or on what device we use it on??

I agree, although it seems like once they get it rooted we will be able to put our own tethering app on it and avoid having to pay for a ridiculous plan. I used WMWiFi Router on my incite and HTC's tethering on the windows mobile HD2 and now the WiFi Hotspot app on Android on the HD2 all on ATT with an unlimited data plan without tethering.
My friend and I added a new apn from the steps in forum to allow tethering without a plan, well I rarely use mine but he uses his a little more to pay bills and such online through his laptop. He received a message yesterday from ATT stating that this sim is not authorized for tethering and to stop. From what I read I thought they were only catching those with the cryphone. Are they starting to look for others too, what's the deal we r both grandfathered in on the unlimited plan, it shouldn't matter how I use my mobile internet its the same wether I use it in my phone or tether through our laptops.

you can pay most bills with the smartphone browsers. i only tether for streaming stock quotes (java applets) when i'm away from home. can your ipad or ipad2 does that? haha
this is why i rather carry my sony 4.5" UMPC when i'm away from home.

Nooo! This is very concerning....
I also agree that everyone should be able to use their monthly allotted amount of data however they please.

It was going to happen eventually. It's the cell phone equivalent of stealing cable. Most companies don't take kindly to losing money on hacked features.

huh??
i have the 2GB plan, does it really matter how i use that 2GB? (laptop or phone?)
if i have cable, i can hook it up any ways i want! (to 50" HDTV, desktop, or laptop)
It's bad enough they (at&t) screwed themselves with the ipads, but now you they really want to be like apple n charge you twice because of it. Why should you have to have 2 data plans to use 1 data feature anyway?
I think it was really more for people like me that have unlimited data plans. I can use an ass-load more data with my laptop than I could with my phone.
Either way, a feature is a feature is a feature. They aren't the first, and they won't be the last big company to charge for stuff like that. As much as you or I don't agree with it (I really hate stuff like this), it's not enough to justify theft. I refuse to pay for tethering, so I just don't do it...
Also, if you read some of the Android guru's talking about the handset manufacturers all starting to lock their bootloaders. This is the reason. Before, when it was just us goofing about with our own devices and hurting noone, especially not the carrier, they couldn't care less. As we start moving into LTE with a tethering option, you'll see almost every single Android handset maker locking their phones down. Just look at the Thunderbolt... HTC has always been a big proponent of the Android dev scene, but they signed that bootloader. If you think it was for any other reason than to stop people from tethering and flooding Verizon's LTE network, you're crazy. Verizon may have forced their hand, but it's still done. Neither AT&T or Verizon want to have to deal with what AT&T had to with the iPhone saturation killing their network speeds(and the crap reputation it's brought them) when it comes to their new LTE networks. They'll do whatever they have to in order to guarantee the majority of their customers get a pleasant network experience. Even if that means making "Suggestions" to handset makers. Motorola did it, HTC did it, Samsung is next, then LG. And ultimately, we're going to be the ones to blame. That's just the way I've been seeing things. I may be completely off base...
*NOTE* The thunderbold has been hacked. Maybe there's hope after all.
At this point I don't really care anymore. If AT&T ever delivers 4G speeds I won't have to tether. Charge me, don't charge me, whatever. Being an AT&T customer is exhausting.

I had AT&T update my IMEI because I was going to be using a non-smartphone for "traveling" and had them put in an unlimited $10 data. Went ahead and popped my SIM into my Inspire, and I've only gotten two messages and an e-mail that they recognized I'm using a 4G SIM and that they've changed my plan accordingly. I called and checked my account online, and both show that I've still got the feature, so it's been working; plus, I've been using WiFi hotspot for my laptop this whole time.
Hope they don't catch on!

You're not going to get 4G speeds with HSPA+. It's a 3.5G technology. The same thing that T-Mobile has been touting as 4G for the last year. They had great speed on their network because no one was using it... That's not being mean, it's just the way it is. If AT&T has this infrastructure and it was only 40% utilized, every current 4G phone (Atrix & Inspire) would be getting 10-14mb down.
I'm in Northern Atlanta (The home of AT&T wireless), and I get 5mb down and 2mb up late at night. During prime time, I pull 2.5mb down and 2mb up.
This will all change when AT&T starts rolling out their LTE network. It should be showing the exact same speeds as Verizon's. They're both similar in size, and running the exact same technology.
So what happens if you set up wifi tethering and start using it without a tethering plan?
Do they know automatically or do they attempt to guess based on increases in data usage?
This would be using the menu options available to you under Network settings in STOCK (not rooted).
there no tethering plan with t-mobile you can wifi tether all you want. But if they do see that you're hitting your cap quickly lets say in a 3 month period. they'll text you if you want to upgrade.
when I was picking up my mt4gs, I overheard a rep trying to sell people an additional tethering plan. is that for unlimited tethering? I wanted to walk up to them and tell them I have been tethering since the G1 without any additional plan... the only real issue is getting throttled, but most months I don't hit the data cap.

Well the rep that sold me my MT4GS said that they don't throttle automatically. He had one customer use 200+GB before he was throttled. Apparently it's hit or miss anyway and he basically talked me into a lower data rate because of it.

If you attempt to tether or do wi-fi sharing on any T-mobile phone that is capable of it one of four things will happen.. Either
A) it will fail...
B) Any browsing attempt will re-direct you to T-mobile.com
C) You will automatically get directed to a page that prompts you to call Customer care to add the $14.99/month Tethering and Wi-Fi sharing feature
D) It will allow you to browse a certain amount and then give you the above page.
The feature has to be on the account for tethering to work long term.. Even if you get away with it for a short time, eventually they will catch you and shut you off until you add the feature. The $14.99/month allows you to share whatever data is on your phone (2GB, 5GB, 10GB) with the phone and Tethering... SO... If you have the 5GB data plan, you get 5GB to share between tethering and your regular phone data usage, then speeds get slowed down to approx 100kbps after that until the bill cycle resets.
Like i told you before there is no tethering plan for t-mobile. My gf tether her phone with her iPad all the time. Nothing had happen so far.
Say that now, but I am guaranteeing you that T-mobile will catch up with her eventually.. There IS a tethering plan and you can call T-mobile and and verify that whenever you want.

perhaps it has something to do with new data plans? I've had a grandfathered data plan for years.

Same and I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan that comes with unlimited texts for only $35. Been tethering forever.
I think he's just making it up. hahaha
A grandfathered plan may be the reason you are still able to tether, but I will tell you that I am a T-mobile employee who works in the phone as modem department and there IS a tethering plan that t-mobile does charge for... Infact, go to t-mobile's website and search for "Tethering" and then look at all of the official documents for tethering with different devices and they will all mention the tethering and wi-fi sharing feature.

A few times may not have been enough for you to get the message... There is a preset threshold you have to meet or exceed to get the message about the tethering plan.. THey have not told any of us what that threshold is (for obvious reasons)
and even if you don't get the message right away, at some point our system will flag the account... Trust me, I field these calls 5 days a week.

So how can they tell that it's tethering data vs. data from the phone? Especially since I can set my browser to desktop mode. Well, I'm too lazy to do it but if tethering ever goes to court, service providers will lose.

There is no way to tell between tethering and phone data... it's all lumped together... even when you add the tethering feature (if the system makes you) you get your data shared with your cell data usage so on a non grandfathered rate plan you get 2gb,5gb, or 10gb to share between tethering and phone data usage.

HTTP traffic is TCP which means it's encoded in ASCII which makes it really easy to scan what goes over the line. In those HTTP headers they can check what the user-agent is as well as the time-to-live setting on each packet which will be different from a windows desktop connection.
However it's possible to mask this. I could in theory make an SSH connection from the phone to an SSH server I have on the internet and tunnel all my tethering through that. It would be very difficult to prove tethering at that point because it would be masked behind the phone's connection to a server.
That all being said. In real world usage I might only tether once or twice a month in what basically amounts to not much more bandwidth usage then normal.
Also. The telecom providers are very backhanded about tethering. We made tethering possible before they knew what the **** tethering even meant. I've been doing this since before most people understood what it means to tether. And I signed up for my unlimited plan back when unlimited meant unlimited. So uh..... T-mo can go **** itself if they expect me to pay extra. lol.

I am going back to college and have a part time job so I want to be smart with my bills. I can technically afford it but things will be tight. I mean I have savings and everything but I am just wondering if it is really worth hanging onto. I have a smartphone and I like all of the cool features with the data plan but my plan is 30 dollars every month. My main problem is I am grandfarthered in so once I take of this plan I will not be able to get it back. Anyone have any thoughts on this or is this all trivial?
I mean are these features really that needed on smartphones? I can always use wi fi for now for updates and such for google. I have internet at home and will have it at school. I just not sure if I can justify it atm. Let me know your thoughts ...
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
I would say no to that idea, because of two things.
1) you need a data plan when your on At&t. They won't allow you to take the internet off. The only way to make your bill cheaper is to change your plan to the $15 200mb(don't quote me on this) and the $25 2gb data plan. So if you use a lot of data then its not worth it. Just stick with the unlimited plan.
2) you might be able to keep your unlimited when At&t gets their LTE 4g network up.

I believe you might be right but I think you can call and have them remove the data plan and block all data in and out like an adolescent plan. I just wouldnt be able to do anything except call and basic txt. I hate having to go back and fourth on decisions lol might need to get the wife back on her feet and get a job lol.

Well that was the case for me and all my smartphones on my account. I would rather use wifi in the phone and take off the internet plan but they tell me I can't take off the data plan. You can always try do, maybe you get lucky.

Data is good
I agree with the previous commenter, if you can be grandfathered onto unlimited data with AT&T when their LTE network comes up, that would be a great thing. Also, with smartphones [depending on when you purchased the phone] you may be required to have a Data plan to have the phone. So if you got rid of the data plan, AT&T would just add it back (or rather the 2GB plan). Most importantly, when I was in college I would sometimes find myself studying on and off campus no where near a free WIFI, which made online research hard.
Exactely ... Thank you so much for the comments they are well received ... Another way I think you can trick ATT is have a gophone or some kind of cheap phone and just tell them you are now using that phone. After they switch your plan just take out your sim card from the dummy phone and just put it back in your smartphone. Everything should work because I have taken and interchanged sims cards many times between different phones like smartphone, blackberry, razor and gophones and everything worked great except the data.
On the other hand I think I am going to stick with the plan because LTE unlimited would be sweet and those studies in weird locations would make my phone very valuble. I do have a hacked phone with Tethering up to 8 wireless devices. So if anyone else doesnt have any other suggestions I think Ill just skip a meal or two and keep my data plan. I did in fact just order a Garmin Forerunner 310XT so this all might just be an onxy moron type situation. Man I have to get into the school mode budget soon or I will be in the dog house faster than a fly can **** on a hourse!

Just thought I would make a topic to see which one of the GT7+ models are better. what's everyone opinion about all the models. wifi only v.s 3g.. Having an IR blaster v.s not having one.
I have the P6210
1- I like having the option of having the IR but what's the point? There is not really any apps out there that work with it, plus the app that comes with the tab doesn't work on older TVs so I never use it.
2- Since the one I have is wifi only after having it for a few months now I wish I had the 3g version. I bought the 7 inch for portability but once I leave my house it becomes an oversized gaming device, since there's not much I can do without internet connection. so I end up tethering it to my phone which kills the battery extremely fast.
so what's your opinion?

I personally think that connectivity is the key of all these devices. Wifi only just does not make any sense to me. 3G all the way...

I second this.. I always have my phone around if I need to tether the tab. The additional cost of the device paired with the data plan is not worth it

I was thinking about that, meaning tethering to a phone... Not everyone can tether to there phone some people have older phones that don't support tethering... plus you can't tether unless your phone is rooted (which mine is of course) without getting a really big phone bill, as far as I know but I could be wrong. Wifi only its not to bad, I guess I can carry around a cell phone charger (since tethering kills my battery) rather than paying a extra data charge

Same here in Honduras, 30 $ a month unlimited 3G , and I use my P6200 as my primary and only phone
WiFi or 3G
The WiFi or 3G argument depends on how you intend to use your tab. I bought the WiFi only tab because I honestly have no use for 3G on my tab. It would just be another bill. I pretty much only use my tab where I have access to WiFi as it is though. I had bought it because I was getting tired of dragging my laptop into meetings or around the office for various reasons. We have full WiFi coverage everywhere at work so the tab comes in handy for quick checking of my mail or my calendar and it is perfect for taking notes and such in meetings. When I go home, the tab comes home with me and once at home I connect it to my WiFi. If I am out and about town and need to check my e-mail or checkout something on the Internet I just use my smartphone and usually do not have my tab with me anyway when doing things out and about. About the only other time I bring my tab with me is if I am headed over to a friends for awhile. All of my friends have WiFi so WiFi only is still not an issue. So as you can see, at least in my case 3G would just be a needless and unwanted monthly bill.

May I ask how much you paid for your Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus?
I personally think 3G on tablets is a waste of money (keyword: personally). I'm never going to pull out my 7" tablet in the middle of the street to check something when I also have a smartphone. And if I'm sitting down somewhere, most likely there'll be Wifi.
