I just cannot seem to figure this out..
I cannot get voice input to work on anything other than the S Voice program that came pre-installed on my phone.
I would like to use it when I text but the stock keyboard does not seem to have the microphone icon on it anymore. Now before you jump and say "I got this" I already know about the hold the settings icon in the lower left and choose the microphone. Only when I do it I dont get 4 icons, I only get 3 and the microphone isnt one of them.
I installed SKYVI from the Play Store and it tells me that my device does not support voice input. Well clearly it does, S Voice works so I checked all my settings but cannot get it working anyplace else. Same thing with the Swiftkey keyboard... it has a microphone icon but when pressed, nothing happens.
This is an Odin rooted stock ROM, nothing special about it at all. Anyone else ever see this before?
Does it work with Google Now? Have you tried the new Swype beta http://beta.swype.com/? This works for me but my not my keyboard of choice, messageease

I dont know what Google Now is.. didnt see any mention of it in the Play store..
I did find this out though.. a lot of these voice apps use Google's "Voice Search" app. The Play store says I have it installed but when I search my phone I dont see it. The "My Android Apps" section of the Play store also says I have it installed on my device, and also mentions its a system app of some kind. But I dont have it, and cant install it from the Play store because its "already installed". I think if I can find the APK for this program, I can probably solve my problem? Anyone have a copy or know where I can get it?
FIXED!

I went online and did some searches away from XDA and found out what Google Now is.. looks pretty slick..
But I also managed to fix my voice input problem. Reading about Google Now got me to thinking.. I opened Root Explorer and went in to System/Apps and there was an APK of something called VoiceSearchStub.apk .. it had a different icon than I was expecting but I went ahead and installed it. I now have a Voice Search icon installed and the voice input on the keyboard now works. But for the life of me I do not know why it was not there in the first place!

Now that we see that an external microphone will work on the Fire, we can start testing apps that require a mic. I'm not a Google Voice or Skype user, so someone with those accounts needs to try them on the Fire.
I did install Vlingo, a speech-to-text app, and tried it. When I speak into it, I get the message "An unexpected server error occurred. Please try again." I'm connecting through the same wifi network that my smartphone is, and Vlingo is working fine on the phone. I can't see why it doesnt work on the Fire...
Now I just installed a speech-to-text app called (appropriately) Speech To Text. When I try it, I get "Runtime Error - No Activity found to handle Intent { act=android.speech.action.RECOGNIZE_SPEECH (has extras)}", with a button to End Application.
Both probally need google search and voice search to work. voice search is the backbone for most of the speech recognition apps out there, hence the no activity error.

I'm sure you're right. Up to now I haven't seen the need to root because I could live without the Google apps on it, but now I may want to.
Google Voice Search (com.google.android.voicesearch-1.apk) installed for me but gives an Audio Problem error and Google Search (GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk) doesn't want to install. Looks like there's a little more work to be done so you might not want to root just yet if this is all you were going to do.

Thanks for the heads up. At this point, that would be the only reason I would root, but if it won't work, I'll wait.
I recently got the CM 9 on my p1000 and it is unbelievably amazing! I figured out how to get the original google apps package and flash it onto the device, but I have a question about the apps. On the Play Store(both the app and through the browser), even though it gives me a list of apps that I have installed on my p1000, I obviously do not have those apps on the device as I wiped all user data post the flash.
So my question is how do I make the Play Store realize that I do not have those apps it shows as "My Android Apps" on my device and I need to re-download and re-install them? Because the Play Store still thinks I have the apps on my device, it wont let me download them onto this same device.
Do I need to create a new google account just for this? I hope not!
Thank You.
EDIT : Another problem I am seeing right now is that when I call someone, I cannot speak on the phone using the loudspeaker as before. I mean using the Mic the other person could hear what I was saying and I heard what he/she was saying only through the speakers but that doesn't seem to be happening now how much ever I adjust the in call volume setting!
I was fooling around and was trying to get the hotword to function on my stock Xoom with JB. I installed a apk from the Galaxy S3 forum about Sprint's update killing the google search box. Which I now have but it has killed my google now search capabilities the mic no longer shows at the top of the right hand side and I can not slide up from the home button to start it either. It is also gone from the launch screen where I could choose from camera, google and system unlock. So I need the stock JB google now apk. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
It may also help if someone could look in their settings and go to apps and go to all and click their google search and see what number version they have. Mine is version number 1.4.1.338691
Thanks to all those that helped. I figured all I had to do was uninstall updates from my google search app and problem was fixed.
(cross-posted from Galaxy S4 board because this may be a more appropriate area)
I wanted the old, ICS style google search where you tap on the widget, type, and are taken straight to your browser.
I downloaded a googlequickboxsearch.apk, changed permissions to rw-r-r, and installed to system/app, then i removed velvet.apk (the jellybean google search app) & rebooted.
Upon restart, it mostly works- i can click on the widget and type straight to my browser. But, the voice search does not appear to work now. When i click on the mic (on the search widget) most of the time some text pops up saying "app not installed", but sometimes it will direct me to the play store to download the app.
The play store shows voice search as "installed", yet when i click on it's entry from the play store there is no option to open/update/uninstall.
To remedy this, I tried to install voicesearch.apk 2.1.4 (i believe this is the latest version) into system/app, but it will not install.
Can someone please help me with this? I really prefer the old ICS style search (as i have no use for Google Now) but also dont wan to gimp the search functionality of my phone either. Thanks
sorry if bumping isn't allowed, i've been googling this all day and cant figure it out
Hi
I recently downloaded dSploit from their website, but after I found it on Play Store too, I just downloaded that one instead.
I saw that my date was 1-1-2015, so I thought that it was a malware. I deleted it and then tried open Play Store, but was not able too. After waiting for Play Store (as I just thought I had slow internet) two messages popped up. One that said something with an program trying to connect to Play Store and another saying Google Maps could not work/open or something like that.
I fast turned off the phone and opened it again. After that my date was normal and I could open Play Store. I downloaded 360 security and ran a scan and it said my phone was clear.
But just to be sure, is it possible for malware to hide on Android, just like on an PC? Also, is their any way I can check if it's still there, as I dislike an malware being able to spy.
Thanks in advance
No there is no maleware in your device(uptil I know). And the reason why your play store was working is because of the date and time. Play store does'nt works if the user does'nt enters the date and time correctly.

Well kind of, but you still get a thanks.
The thing was, that the program I downloaded from Play Store changed my date and didn't allow me to surf the web without getting redirected and so on.
So what I was curious about, was that after deletion of the program, am I still infected or can malware hide on Android, just like on windows? Or when then app itself is deleted, so is the malware?
Thanks in advance
Well I think there is no maleware but I still prefer you to run an anti-virus check so all of your doubts are removed
