Ubuntu for phones, will you get it for your g2x? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I just watched the video on Ubuntu for phones os and its looks great! On the website, there's option for the lite version that will work with phones with minimum single core. I'm loosing hope on fully functional jb on this phone and I feel this is the last resort other than buying a new phone. Are you guys going to install it when it releases?

I really want to. But I just don't know how to go about doing that. Also your right, jb is just a maybe, and honestly I really want something stable and fast

As long as most of the things work, I'm installing it as soon as it launches.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

Indeed this is a breakthrough.... I am waiting for something like this to be installed on my nokia e7
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app

Correct me, but did it not say it will have to be ported? I was reading if all devices will be getting it. Maybe it will be similar how cyanogen mod work and has different devs for different devices.
I would love to help with that if that is the case.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

The Ubuntu website said that this odd based off the android kernel. It's probably ics kernel because it was on g nexus. This could be notable for us, we may never get this fully working.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

I will give it a shot if it ever comes on this phone
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

Uhhh, it'd be the same inherent problem we currently have with trying to get jellybean on these phones...nvidia (closed source) chips. Right? Drivers are pretty important little buggars.

We may have problems yes. But I still would be very happy to be sportin' ubuntu on my phone.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk 2

IMO, ubuntu on the G2x sounds amazing.

I'll be watching for such development from my polished turd of a device...
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

Definitely will try it.

Well hopefully the tegra 2 wont give Ubuntu issues
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium

It will give you problems, one of the requirements for Ubuntu on phones is that the have to be able to run ics or jb, nvidia drivers are required.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

Yup from now on stay away from LG and Motorola phones
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium

Except nexus 4. Google handles the updates not lg.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Yeah u r rite on that one . I also have a motorola atrix hd at its bootloader its locked i dont understand how google would lock it
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium

Not having the Java overhead would make it feel like a new phone. Hopefully it can be ported.
Sent from my Android powered coffee coaster.

There's a good chance this will run on Mazout's CM10.1 unofficial (no radio), and now that Mazout has compiled a fairly easy dual-boot option to this ROM it will be a lot easier to experiment with.

Well hopefully but knowing our device !!! Who knows lol

Honeycomb

Guys I have a question about a Honeycomb port. Is anyone working in one. I know that the zoom is LTE capable so is there a way to port that onto the thunderbolt. Wouldn't that be even a lil easier than porting gb.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Honeycomb is a tablet Ui and runs on a ten inch tablet. I don't know how well it would work on a phone. Would be cool to play with honeycomb but it wouldn't be a daily driver. Gingerbread is for phones and there are builds for this phone so that's definitely easier
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
But I have a friend using it on his hd2. A daily driver would be nice but even something to play with would be fun. Plus I know there are ports too other phones
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Devs are already working on it for other phones, but it does not support calls.

Is it possible to have 2 roms running @ the same time

Kinda like a dual boot in pc having xp and win7
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Yes, there was a thread about multiple boot ROM in devi section. Search!
Sent from my LG-P999
No need to jump down their throat, especially when that thread addresses having two options to boot from, not really the same thing this guy was asking
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I haven't found a way yet if you figure it out let us know
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I'm just saying that will be cool having a cm7 rom and switching to ics with out flashing or cwm recovery every time
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I believe this is what he was referring to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617055&highlight=dual+boot
I have dual boot on my laptop. I have to restart to boot into ubuntu though, his question seems more like, can you store two os in ram and switch between them. That would be sweet. Especially now that I know about that swapper program that lets you built a virtual ram partion on your ultra class 10 32gig sd : )
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
This works great on computers but on devices it would be kind of pointless not to mention the amount of memory you would need...still seems cool but I can't imagine the benefits...

It was the same thing he was asking, the other (I give him the benefit of the doubt) thing he also know isn't the best way for a phone ram, yet.

I don't have any knowledge of how to port webos to the nexus 7 but I'd love to try it if somebody could do it

Yes! If you could make it flashable via cwm recovery id be your slave for a day lol
Not to crush anyone's hopes I said " might" I have yet to start going through tutorials on xda university and it will take me ages (I have only a small amount of experience with c++ and non at all with c)

Actually we don't need to port I just remembered about the phoenix webos app that the phoenix group have been working on that let's u run webOS within android we don't need to port we can just wait for that to come out.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I heard about the app, but having a limited os inside an app isn't the same as installing the full os on the device
I'll probably try out the app but I still think it'd be better if someone could port webos proper to the nexus 7
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well I wonder how it would be limited you could just take a ROM and use titanium backup to remove all in wanted apps and just use webos for everything.

They've released how to test it on webos ports http://www.webos-ports.org/wiki/Testing_Nexus_7 but u still have to boot it at first via the PC (after its booted to webos you don't need to keep it plugged into the PC) but apparently using it won't affect your android install, now just to figure out what ifconfig is.

Platform and kernel source for Jellybean released (VRBLK3)

It's pretty much 98% the same as Sprint, but there are differences in the buildconfig.
Pro tip: Samsung is eager to give you sources once an OTA comes out. Don't bother doing FOSS requests for leaks.

Not on a US model, it's been released on some international models though
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't expect Premium Suite until March or something.
Will this help people developing AOSP ROMs like CM10.1 or AOKP or will this mostly be of help to TW ROM makers? Mainly asking as I am debating between keeping my Nexus or GS3 aand at this point I am leaning towards Nexus because CM10.1 runs better on it, but if this will help us maybe the GS3 will surpass the Nexus.
Looks like there might be a quicker fix coming for premium
http://www.android.gs/update-galaxy-s3-official-jelly-bean-4-1-2-xxell4-premium-suite/
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
That's for the international model which has completely different hardware.
No North American S3 can use that.
Porting is very impractical if not outright impossible. People have tried, it can't be done.

You guys think we'll get Ubuntu phone OS?

Not really a big deal but it would be cool to see on our skyrocket. Our developers are so awesome so it wouldn't surprise me to see it. Getting it on nexus 7 and would love to have it on both.

Honestly probably not; and I think it's a gimmick at the moment. A phone entirely controlled by gestures? Sounds great in theory, but not great in practice
I guess I'll find out soon enough on my nexus 7.

one word: BB10, blackbery's new os is entirely gesture drive
but we don't have enough devs for a port of something like this, its massive... I truly believe that unless a device with similar chip set/CPU gets it we likely won't. Don't get me wrong our devs are great, just few
Would be nice, as would Firefox OS but i'm more hot for Ubuntu for Android as that would finally rid me of having a technically unnecessary pc
I use a gesture based OS on my blackberry playbook daily. It is incredibly smooth when done correctly. If Ubuntu does it correctly, then I wouldn't mind having it ported. If it's done badly, then it just wouldn't be worth it.

True, this leads me to believe it won't be as hard as people are thinking to get this to build yes it will involve a lot of work but I'm not thinking its going to be some herculean task.

I hope it's easy to do. I love android but I've always wanted to try a different operating system. Not gonna make it permanent but it'd be cool to use sometimes. Anyone know if you can back it up with recovery and restore it later? I'll ask over in the nexus 7 forums as well.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
You can if you make a flashable zip. Installing via bootstrapper deletes everything iirc.
Cannocal has already made a flashable zip for the nexus devices. You have to fastboot flash a .img file.
