[Q] Radio and HBOOT - HTC Desire S

Which HBOOT do you recommend for an ICS rom and what are the benefits of changing HBOOT or radio?
I'm actually using ICE DS 6.5
Thanks

Changing hboot has no benefits for your current ROM. If your ROM works, fine. If it doesn't (ususlly if you have an older hboot and you use a newer ROM that expects a seperate /system/lib partition), flashing a newer hboot can fix things. But if your current ROM is booting up fine, flashing a different hboot will not make any difference for you.
The radio is the software that controls your phone's GSM functionality - upgrading it might yield better signal or battery life, it might also completely screw your ability to connect to any cell network at all. General opinion is that the benefits of a radio update do not outweigh the risk unless you're really having issues with your current radio.

This thread has some info for you which hboot you should install

Actually I don't have any problems with connections, I just thought updating radio could improve my camera quality. Evidently i was wrong.

Downgrade and Radio upgrade

One aspect I haven't touched yet is rooting and custom ROMs because I installed the 2.2.1 update. I was planning to live with it but my Radio signal is so weak that I almost miss all my calls.
Now, I have read the article on how to downgrade but I want to ask a few questions:
1) Is there a radio version that could improve my signal or more or less all wil be similar?
2) Can I install other radio without root or do I still need to downgrade in order to get root access?
3) If I install custom ROM 2.3 Gingerbread will I get improved signal or it has nothing to do with signal?
most importantly you need to read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837781
as for your questions:
1. newer radio versions tend to increase performance, signal and battery life.
2. you need root (and radio s-off at least)
3. the rom doesn't have anything to do with the radio signal.

Thanks, so radio versions are mostly count by age. right?
In my Software info, I see:
Baseband version: 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Is this the latest version?
Where do I find newer releases?
You can find all radio HERE
The radio you have is not the latest.
The latest is 26.06.04.14_M
Even though newer radios are better for the most part, some have experienced that older radios might work better for them with their carrier.

should be noted that this radio version comes from the test leak. call me paranoid, but that's not going on my phone. latest official is afaik 26.06.03.24_M2.
OP: please have the thread moved by a mod, thx.

[Q] Low signals with Sense 3.5 Roms...

I am having Serious Low signals with Sense 3.5 Roms... It's better with Sense 3.0..
I have tested almost all Roms of this Sensation Forum and my observation is the same ...
What's the reason?...
My Radio was the same latest 10.58 in all Roms i tried... Tried matching RIL but didn't work in Sense 3.5 Roms...
Any suggestions? Should i downgrade radio?

Hi,
The best radio its the one that works.
Never mind all the suggestions that say you must have this or that radio with this or that ROM.
The one that actually works with your phone in your area is the best one for you.
It is a good thing that you have tried all different roms.
Now try the different radios, and stick with the one that works.
Nothing happens downgrading Radios?
The method of copying to Sdcard Root directory and checking md5 before flashing is safe?

Hi,
If you downgrade your radio, and you get better signals, then, there is no problem.
I prefer to use the adb method.
I hear of fewer problems with adb.
The sd card root method, however, is easier to install.
The choice is yours.
i know the build.prop file contains settings for the network, i also had the same problem and check the build.prop and it said i was using the 10.58 ril and i didn't realize but when you flash the ril file in recovery that the system has to be mounted.

Pardon... I didn't get what u meant... You shared same problem as mine so i would request you to repeat what you said in more simple way which is easy to understand..
I would be curious to hear which radio is best for keeping the data connection as fast and responsive as possible when we have less than a full rack of bars.
I have T-Mobile USA and had some issues with the 10.58 Radio. I downgraded back to the stock 10.56 Radio and it seems to be a lot better - I am running the 4.1.8 ARHD with Sense 3.5.
Download the Radio 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01 and install via ADB
- adb reboot bootloader
- fastboot flash radio radio.img
- fastboot reboot
Then download the RIL HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ and flash via recovery.
Hopefully this works for you as well as it did for me!

What sort of issues did you have with the 10.58 radio?
@ jjdoctor, if your using a custom rom some roms are set up for EU..ect check the build.prop which is under system/build.prop (must be root) there are settings that are related to the network. take a build.prop from a stock rom and compare, also remember when you flash the ril in recovery you must mount the system first then flash the ril file. then flash your radio. there is no specific radio for a rom, dev's just say that cause they have a certain ril file install already for it. So just pick the radio that was from your stock ruu, which you can extract, get the ril file that is related to that radio, boot into recovery, mount the system, flash the ril, reboot into bootloader flash your radio and you should be set.

For me, I seemed to have a dropped signal, poor reception (on phone calls sounded like people were far away), signal would go in and out constantly - quickly would refresh but when you are a heavy user and signal goes in and out and interrupts what youre doing its very frustrating haha. Also, data speeds weren't as great. I am thinking of doing a speedtest result with 10.56 and 10.58 for everyone - but I really think it'd just apply to where I am (Colorado/New Mexico).

Battery life after firmware upgrade?

Hi, would appreciate some input as I'm pretty new with this.
I recently tried the ics Rom but didn't like it, so I reverted back to my 2.3.4 stock but now it seems the battery is running down very quickly. Could this b related to the firmware flashed for the ics?
I noticed hboot is now 1.23 and radio is 11.19.....even I did a wipe and restore the Nand I created b4 the firmware upgrade. So I guess restoring NAND doesn't include the firmware?
So I m wondering how would I go.about goin back to where it was b4...is the battery affected by the firmware?
Thx

Generally when you flash any new ROM you should give it 2 full charge cycles before evaluating the battery usage. It has something to do with the "battery stats" needing to recalibrate.
However, I guess it could have something to do with flashing the new firmware. I would recommend though giving it some time and seeing if it levels out in a day or two. If it doesn't, then you know there may be some other issue.
Battery drain is one of those tricky subjects, cause any amount of apps can make a huge difference as well. There is a lot of general variance...
Anyways.
Hope I helped
It can also be attributed to GB roms having certain RIL files pertaining to 10.x radios. The ICS radio is 11.x, and no GB roms have RIL files for 11.x radios. That being said - if RIL files don't match the radio in question, battery life and performance can be bad.
I do believe you can keep the hboot 1.23 but you need to down grade that radio back to 10.56 or 10.59. The RIL file should be in ur nandroid backup for the older radio already so in theory that + 2 battery cycles and you should be good again. Theres a radio thread over in the development section. Install old radio and like mommy used to say 'dont forget to wipe' before a fresh restore. G'luck

Thx for the input. I do think it's related to the firmware update I flashed when trying to do the ICS. I've done a few cycles and the battery is still bad. I flashed the older firmware file (the one from the extracted dec tmous update), but it didn't change radio back and HBOOT is still 1.23. Guess I can try to just flash the radio.
If I run the RUU file, it will reset everything is that right? I'll lose root too? How about S-off and CW? And after installing RUU, can I do OTA update given the RUU file available is a lower software version.
Appreciate the clarification
Theres a radio flashing guide somewhere where you can download just the radio and flash it without losing root or rom data if done right. The firmare you flashed was taken out of the ICS RUUs just like the radios are taken out for flashing purposes. And so are flashed through the bootloader just like you did with firmware.
That old dec tmo firmware we had flashed didnt include a radio i think the packager left it out. All i think you did was redo the nand partitions back to the last GB setup so no harm there.
An RUU is a full package install. Partitions, hboot, recovery, radio, rom, the works. Everything we are talkin about here are just pieces of an RUU. So root and s-off should still be there unless u flash a whole RUU.
baatery
the first time I've flashed it was horrible, run out after not much usage in one day.
flashed oneics, and now hd 6.0.2 and it is looking good...

Older RIL on 4.0.4

Hi,
I have a Desire S, unlocked via HTCdev with IceColdSandwich installed on it. Almost everything is working fine, but I am experiencing signal losses quite often.
It seems likely to me that the combination of ICS and the radio ROM from GB (3822.10.08.04_M) is causing the issue. While I could flash a new radio ROM, I'd have to S-Off my phone first, which leaves with one other option:
Is it possible to flash the matching RIL for my radio on ICS? Would that possibly work?
If so, I would be grateful for any guidance on how to extract the RIL from the old RUU.

[Q] Hboot 2.15 and wifi probs

Hi all!
After ditching my Desire HD, I bought myself a HTC One S for its faster soc and better screen.
As I was used to having everything working on my former phone I'd expect this for the One S as well..
So far I've reached Unlocked bootloader, SuperCID and S-Off. Still on HBoot 2.15 though.
On PAC-man Rom at the moment and experience some Wifi problems as its not connecting to all wifi networks, yet some of m work.
Tried all sorts of radios from the Development forum, Sense version, Temporally version and CM version. None seem to take effect.
Tried some different Kernels as well, same outcome..
Tried ViperRom (with and without update) this morning and Wifi isnt able to switch on, even after different kernel and radios..
In short... is there a way to get all types of Wifi working on AOSP or Sense rom?
Is it neccessary to downgrade HBoot (as there is bricks reported)?
I'm on 2.15. S-off. Super cid. But I never had wifi problems. Have you tried the wi-fi fix on the radio thread?

I have not found a seperate file tot flash or push for wifi fix, so i presume it is incorporated in the aroma installable radios.
Wat ROM are you on?
OK. Here's what I've found out..
Since I'm really anonoyed by my phone not connecting to all types of Wifi I flashed an RUU.
I did this during SuperCID and S-OFF and just ran a .exe RUU.
First one I tried: RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.09.401.1_R_Radio_0.14.3059.14_2_release_243825_signed.exe
It had no effect, booted up, yet Wifi was not fixed.
Next one I tried: RUU_Ville_U_HTC_Europe_1.53.401.2_Radio_0.15.31501S.19_10.12.31501S.06L_release_251412_signed.exe
And voila my Wifi worked.
On Hboot 1.06 now, flashed recovery and next PAC-Man ROM v20.0.0.
Now my Wifi again is selective like it was before.
I hope someone has an idea where to look as I simply don't understand what the problem is..
Tried the Temporary Radio V2 as well, no effect.
Anyone?
In the developer forum there is a radio thread with the WiFi fix.

Yes, as mentioned, I have tried the wifi fix, doesnt make a difference :s
Have you tried switching your hboot around?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38387544&postcount=148
Thanks for the hint.
However something I found out was that the new version of VenomROM V2.1 does give me full Wifi.
Unfortunately I don't realy like Sense Roms and rather have a different one.
I redownloaded PACman v20.0 and have tried all Hboot versions, none seem to make an improvement on Wifi capability.
Some work, some won't..
Going to try one or two Hboots with different Radio's from Temp Radio installer V2.
Anyone got an idea? Or perhaps a nice Hint again
