Mirrorlink allows the device to seamlessly connect with the car's audio/video head unit.
And the samsung drive link app(currently available only for gs3) mirrors the screen on your phone to the car a/v head unit touchscreen so that one can access the maps/call/notifications of the phone directly from the head unit touch screen.

[APP][2.2+] CheapCast. Turn your Device into a ChromeCast Dongle

Ok, here it is. The first public beta of CheapCast, an App that let's your Android Device emulate a ChromeCats Dongle. I decided to put this up for free since I believe it could potentially useful to a whole lot of people. If you like it and it works for you, feel free to just use one of the Donation options within the App.
I will also make the Source Code available in the near future (I'm still cleaning it a bit up). Just watch this space: https://github.com/mauimauer/cheapcast
I hope to further improve the App and welcome anybody who wants to contribute.
In my first PoC-Video I've showed CheapCast with YouTube, I've just uploaded another video showing Google Music streaming to a Nexus 7 running CheaCast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ktmrXgj9qQ&feature=youtu.be
As this is the first public Beta please expect things to fail. I appreciate your feedback. Please log your issues/bugreports here: https://github.com/mauimauer/cheapcast/issues
Hope you enjoy it.
Get it on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.maui.cheapcast
or download it here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877489999237
Awesome thanks. I'll be testing as soon as I get home.
very handy!
n4 > cheapcast > note 10.1 attached to sony bravia :highfive:
Awesome concept, but I cannot get my Revue to cooperate at all. It force closes every single time I try to start the service. I've tried multiple reboots and re-installs. Blah this Revue is a POS.
Awesome. Planning to try this on my Nexus Q running CM. Finally give the Q a purpose in life once again
Thanks!
Works on my SGS3 and my Xoom.
Not on my HPTouchpad or my Ouya but I haven't tried very hard yet.
Like it a lot!!!!
Works OK so far. Great concept for sure!! I can get all 3 of my Samsung device to connect but can only get you tube to play. I keep getting errors when using Google play music. Says unable to play requested song.... Anyway, I have my galaxy note 8.0 and also a galaxy s4 connecting to a galaxy s2 skyrocket. I've even tried connecting just the note 8.0 and s4 and have the same issue. Hope to get this fixed soon... Would love to stream to my surround sound when I feel like jammin!
A explaination on what this does exactly would be nice.
concept
i dont know why people are using both sender and receiver as mobile devices i think the concept of this app is that your suppose to install this app on a android tv hdmi dongle and transfer content from your mobile device to you tv
This is really awesome can anyone recommend some good dongles? works great with my gnex via MHL, but still a bit troublesome

I was just wondering if such service will be available on other platforms like, Linux or Windows. So it can run on HTPCs.

Try https://github.com/dz0ny/leapcast/
Both seem to have the same problems at the moment though, single channel? Loses connection with the sender after one or two tracks of a playlist.
Very much looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Tried loading up Cheap cast on a second device. (MK802 and ATV1200) It didn't like that at all, none of my phones could see any CCs in Music.
Why??

Same problem here, losing the connection after a song. The only way to get it working again is to either disconnect and reconnect the sender, or to restart the service on the receiver. Bar that, this is class

Had this issue as well. I found out, that CheapCast is registered as another device for Google Play Music. I already had 10 devices attached, so killing some of the old and not used ones fixed that problem.
Maybe you got the same problem, if its only Music that is not working?
Congrats on making it to the frontpage of XDA News

Casting screen

Anyone tried casting your screen to chromecast ?
I tried using the MirrorEnabler method, but it told me there were some essential files missing, and that I might need to flash a custom ROM to be able to cast it.
Has anyone been successful with casting on the Stock ROM ? If not does anyone know what files i'll need to push, in order to get MirrorEnabler to do its thing ?
Any help appreciated !
Thanks

The stock rom actually has casting built in. Swipe the right menu and all the way on the bottom when your device detects the chromecast should be a icon that says cast screen

Mirror casting with shield tablet using Chromecast sucks. I know Chromecast isnt designed for lagless mirroring. Playing and casting videos from your storage is really laggy.
I wished I bought Microsoft wireless display adapter instead. Based on the reviews, it seems to have the highest chance as a cable free solution to the HDMI cable.
Been looking for 2 things:
1. If anyone's actually tried NST with MS WIDI adapter, how was it?
2. Can a Chromecast be hacked to perform like a WIDI adapter, so that the content streaming won't have to go through WiFi and internet?
Hope someone could help. Thanks!

USB dashcam

If I understand right, my KGL PX5 unit can handle a front camera as a dashcam recorder. I've seen that the seller where i bought it also sells a USB camera for that purpose.
I've tried to connect a standard USB Microsoft webcam I have lying around, but it was not recognized.
It's not possible to use any USB cam?
Following the post above... I'm thinking about buying a specific CAM for my HU, but I'm not sure if I could use it as I want (supposig it will work...). I just need to start and stop recording automatically when the unit is switched on and off, and automatically delete old recordings after a set amount of time to free disk space.
Is it possible to do it using the stock DVR app?
Are there any alternative app working with those units that can be used like that?
Sorry for asking, but I dont' want to buy another cam and then discover it's useless...

for what i have found after an extensive search and a few question (not answered jet) in this forum is that this android head units are not jet ready for dash cam dvr functionality without compromising other function. it is sad because would be really nice to integrated the dash cam recording function to this units properly .
Ok, thank you for your answer.
So I think I'll give up on that, or wait for someone to find a working solution.

I have been using AutoGuard. Not perfect, front view is reversed but records properly. Been able to get it to auto start most of the time. Need to to stop it before shutting down or the last video file stays a temp file. Also need to select camera because it defaults to a rear camera?? and is blank.
Mine auto records with the factory app. I don't understand how people are having problems.

Because we are trying to use usb cams other than the supported ones they sell with the units.
And the factory app don't have settings for resolution. Records just in 640x480.
and the sensor that they used are not any good

Running Alexa/GoogleHome into the head unit?

I'm thinking about installing an Amazon Echo or similar into my car as an AI interface.
Question, is there an input and/app that will mute or pause any music player currently in use and let Alexa or google home talk back?
Similar to your phone pausing or muting when an incoming call or notification comes in.
Or, has anyone managed to run Alexa in their Android unit? I.E. convert their Head unit into an echo or dot etc?
I have not purchased an echo or dot yet, and I'll probably go down the line of Raspberry Pi just for the tinker inside of me.
Cheers.
why not just install the Alexa app from the play store?
you still require the echo/dot unit to run it.
Your phone or other Android unit is only the settings portal.
Alexa needs to communicate through her own hub unit

That's not true at all. The app has full Alexa functionality as well as being used for changing the settings on other devices. The only difference is you have to press a button to activate instead of saying Alexa
Thanks.
I'll look into it.
I've seen on line some people connecting Alexa via Bluetooth into their headunit and also connecting her into the OBD2 input.
Think I'll just take the plunge and pick one up to tinker with in the meantime
Any update on this? Anyone successful in running echo or Google home with this using Bluetooth?
Uhh, we have android head units, and the google home is the same thing as OK or Hey Google on the head unit lol, this is redundant and pointless guys.

Agree , its pointless provided the HU works fine with google assistant, but most of the time its not! Either it crashes or hangs the system or very slow to respond!

Any luck? I love Alexa at home and would be great in car with wake word. Can you ask for directions, play music , trigger home events? I receive my head unit tomorrow.
I run alexa on my Chinese head unit, it's not perfect, but I set it to load automatically and it does respond to voice, ie no button pressing, it's faster and less processor hungry than Google assistant.
It will quite happily play and change radio channels, music, news etc and loads Google maps with my route when I say "alexa, navigate home" for example.
Only issue is, you can't run the app in auto mode so I run it with a split screen, nav on one side, alexa on the other.
Responds to my voice even with lots of road noise.

On your headunit there should be a screen that has About...System... or System Info or the like. Having a screenshot of this screen can be helpful to know exactly what kind of headunit you have (i.e. manufacturer, firmware versions, Android version, etc). There are identifying details on that screen that can be helpful to others on the forum.
It helps bring context to both help requested and help provided by forum members. Plus it helps forum moderators ensure questions end up in the right forum. Basically. one could expect similar results to your experience using alexa/Google on same or similar specfication headunit. How else would anyone else know if they have same/similar headunit without that identifying screenshot of About System?
Just trying to explain why it is desirable to have the details that a screenshot of the About System can provide.
I get that, but the other user was a tad curt.
