I've looked around and am more confused than ever. Remote Media Center, Home DIA, XBMC, soundwire, orb...
What I want is simply to:
- play all my music stored on my PC or WHS (mp3, FLAC, etc)
- play over WIFI and over 3G
- no 'up convert/down convert' nonesense, just play it in the format i encoded it in.
- prefer it to access my whole PC (install a PC app as well?) and let me navigate to my music as opposed to fooling around with the windows media center libary nonsense which never seems to work quite right.
dont really care about video, although i guess that comes along with the ride most of the time.
is there something easy and free? once upon a time, orb did this on my old windows mobile 5 phone..but the world has changed and it seems the current orb is less than stellar these days.
what does everyone use for this? i do NOT want to sync stuff up to google play or anything. just give me access to my 5 zillion MP3s on my WHS hard drive.
dang. tough question?
Twonky beam?

I got an ubuntu server at home. I use Subsonic and the Android subsonic App. I think there is a build for windows too. Just google it. I use it every day.

ok set up subsonic..seems to do the job..but you gotta donate to keep it working on android devices after 30 days..looks like you can donate any amount though.
maybe something better out there..but so far this seems promising. thanks!
If you are willing to pay 4 dollars, I would certainly suggest Plex. You will be amazed.

I donated 10€ for Subsonic because it really seems fair to pay a small amount for (in my opinion) great software.

Xbmc exposes a Upnp endpoint, you can use bubblepnp to browse the endpoint and either render on the device or on Xbmc. Works like a charm and its free as beer

Hey what do you guys like for video streaming? What about Jetflix? I am thinking about trying it but Im not sure
Not sure peoples obsession with netflix lately, hell im watching netlfix right now!, i did use it on my htc incredible which was fully supported, untill they get it running on the charge i will continue to use Plex for video streaming i Love my PLEX available from market, used with a plex media server available plexapp.com on my windows 7 server with decent specs. I stream ANY of my 4 terabytes of video content stored on local hard drives. to my droid charge, if you have decent home internet along with a decent video collection i highly recommend it
Hey dabomb...ive been trying.to set up plex as well ..but for claritys sake, youre streaming your videos to your phone outside of your home network to your phone via 3g/4g? Or just within your home network?

I really like Emit Free but it only works locally right now. (WiFi only)
I've tried PlayOn, VLC, Gmote, SAMBA, etc, and never found a really acceptable solution for this until now.
Plex is in one word awesome. It works great inside and outside your home network. If you are having trouble accessing plex outside your local network go into advanced settings on your plex app flush the cache. This is a known issue and they are working on a fix for the next release.
I am assuming you have already forward your ports from your router.

First, confirming that Android TV works over 4G and WiFi on my G2x on all of the remote computers I've accessed.
My purposes for this app is for remote tech support for family and friends. I was looking for an app that was affordable, and one that I could use both my laptop/DT and Droid to access other computers.
Haven't had a single force close and I've tried just about every option available in the app. [Currently running CM7 #103 on faux123's OC/UV.]
Couple great things about the app:
1. EASY to use.. (install app, install client on remote PC, Input ID/Pass to Connect)
2. FAST interface. Even with 4G I was able to quickly run around on Desktops. The mouse uses touch-screen control. The keyboard works great. I haven't tested this in "optimized quality" yet. But you can adjust the quality based on your needs.
3. FEATURES are enough for any remote tech support. I haven't tested it for remote TV/Movie viewing from PC to Droid.. but I don't think TV is regularly used for that purpose anyway.
4. Oh.. and of course, TV is FREE. I've had a few people recommend LogMeIn, but the app costs a mint and the RDP client for PC to PC access is licensed at another montly/yearly rate... The WYSE app is another popular app (Still expensive), but TV just seems easier to use for both Droid & PC-based Remote Viewing.
Please let me know if anyone has had an equal or better experience with PocketCloud or any of the Microsoft RDP apps. For now, this seems like the best free (client-based) app available for remote win/mac desktop viewing/control.
Note: I'm aware there are threads for this app in other phone model forums. The purpose of this was to confirm the apps reliability on G2x (running CM7) and further explain the features available in comparison to other similar apps.
I been using it since I got my G2X back in feb. could'nt use it on my My Touch 3G. Cant wait to get next years 4.5+ inch quad core phones. The Dell Streak should have sat out a year and lost some weight lol.
Yea i've been using TV since i got my g2x also, it's great. Free and e z to use and works really well... i use it to spy on my girl when im gone with the web cam. j/k... no really
What is the nameof the app?

Just tried out TV with my G2x on my work computer and is so smooth running on the G2x. Very impressed in the app
Been using team viewer on the g2x for a while now. Works excellently. Been using it mostly to start up my Minecraft server for my buddies when I'm not at home lol.

Does it stream sound from your pc to phone? Allow you to mount ur SD card as a network drive on the PC, etc?
I would love this
I have my old Legend Smartphone connected to a subwoofer and speakers to play the mp3 on its sd card with better quality and more volume throughout my pad.
What I want to do is controlling the music player (any music player) on the Legend with my Galaxy Nexus, which is connected to the same Wifi network. As my place has 2 stories, it's a hassle to walk down, if I just want to skip a song or manipulate volume or equalizer settings.
Did anyone have a similar problem? I played around with twonky servers, allshare, dnla and Media Server apps, but it seems, they only stream back to my Nexus, which I don't want, as it's in my pocket and not connected to the sound system. Tried Airdroid, but it doesn't have that functionality and runs horribly slow in the phone browser.
I'm a bit clueless now on how to achieve this simple function. Could anyone push me in the right direction or towards the app, that could do something like that?
Thanks a million!

VNC? There may be some other solutions, I just immediately think VNC for remote control. If you have root on your old phone there are good VNC servers out there.
Yup, both phones are rooted.
So what you suggest is installing a vnc server app on the Legend and a vnc client on the Nexus to control the Legend's music player with? Interesting! Gotta give that a try.
Do you have any apps you would personally recommend due to their ease of use and light overhead?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
am using
droid VNC server BETA, I was using the application its pretty gud
Thanks for the help so far! I'm using now droidVNC on the Legend and Mocha VNC as the client on the Nexus. Looking good so far and the overhead seems pretty low.
On the Legend I use Cloudskipper Music Player, as it offers good lock screen controls (including volume controls).
Will use it a while like that and maybe come up with some more ideas on how to smoothen the experience. I like also the controls and notifications of Simple Lock screen, although it doesn't have volume controls.
Anyway, thanks for helping out! ;-)

Hi all,
Recently i created a thread about some remote connections that were not really working out that well on the TF300..
Nobody gave me a response so i try it again ..
Somehow remote connections wont work properly on the TF300.
Unified remote and DLNA features wont work. Sometimes i can see my laptop and stream music to it but an hour later i have to reboot, restart apps, enable wifi disable, whatever to get it to work.
This problem is also in the unified remote app.
Now this can't be a problem on the tablet because my dad, with exactly the same tablet got exactly the same problems..
Come on XDA help me
Few things first....
My net app of Asus is crap... use bubble upnp
Don't use WiFi direct... it is not supported yet in jelly bean

So what do you think is the best app for DLNA playback ?
Bubble upnp

Upnplay : free from the market. Lousy interface, but fast and reliable. Has ability to have unlimited cache (=available memory) to load song and video listings.
I also often use J River Media Center (paid windows app) combined with Gizmo (free on market) on Android. That's the only solution which works fast enough with a very large (>100.000 songs) music collection. You need to leave your pc on and have JRiver running though, but it works great for all music, video & pictures that you manage on the pc through JRiver. Really, really fast.

I want to be able to listen to my entire itunes through streaming onto my Nexus 5 and I know there's apps which do this like Doubletwist. But the problem is my desktop does not run through wifi, its a wired connection. So I was wondering if theres an app which doesn't need the same wifi on your Android device as your desktop.
Thanks
Have you tried the apps? Usually if the computer is connected to the same network by Ethernet it'll work for apps that use it, I know things like WiFi mouse etc do. Or ditch iTunes and upload your music to Google play, it'll take a while but you'll save hours by not having to use the worst piece of software in existence.

If your N5 and desktop are on the same subnet, you can control and listen to iTunes, even though the desktop is not on the wireless. My home system is like that (the primary desktop mac is a wired ethernet into my LAN and has its wifi card turned off).
In order for your N5 (any wifi client) to work this way requires your wireless (wifi) router to be in access point mode (which is NOT the default), not in normal router mode. How easy this is to do depends entirely on your particular wifi router, and your skill at configuring it.
(When your N5 and desktop are on the same subnet, you can use AirBubble on your N5 to receive the audio from iTunes on your desktop machine, and you can use Remote for iTunes to control the running iTunes on your desktop. Works very well).

You could try subsonic. it wont interfere with itunes ( ugh ) and it will convert your flac and ogg and movie files on the fly too. Then get dSub for your android and you will never use itunes again. Subsonic is a free open source media server you install on your pc that streams to your phone or any device, no clunky uploading to the cloud. Dsub is a pay for app but I have paid for it twice its that good and dev works hard on it, constantly updating it.
subsonic here
dsub on play and forum if you want to see what up with that
forum 4 dsub
Honestly once you try this you will wonder why you havent heard about this before it's so easy.
older apk of dsub
load that up and then stream from the demo server that it comes with , see how good it is. And some interesting music from Norway there too

So far, the problem I'm up to I think is the port forwarding. Seems the custom URL for your name doesn't connect and possibly due to not successfully port forwarding. I am also using my university's wired connection. Could that be why?

Go into your router settings > Go to port forwarding > Give it a name Music Streaming > Enter the port and forward it to the internal IP.
example http://www.howtogeek.com/66214/how-to-forward-ports-on-your-router/
Scratch what I wrote. I didn't see you were on a university network. Not sure you're going to have much luck with port forwarding.

Why , Dear deity, would you take the huge time/BW to upload what you already have digitally and could serve up to yourself at a cost of no time at all?? And still stream it anywhere on the net and keep control of it yourself ?
I hate being evangelistic but this is really a no brainer once you understand how Subsonic works
