[Q] Help w/ Refurbed Nexus S and Firmware - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
I'm new to Android from Windows Phone and recently purchased a refurbed Nexus S (i9020A), and it came installed with 2.3.6 (GRK39F). It seems to me that the device is far enough back, software-wise, that it won't be able to receibe the 4.1 update OTA. As for my questions, I know that Google makes the factory ROMs available (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images), but I'm wondering about two things:
1) Is it possible to flash the latest officially available ROM (4.1.2) without first updating to ICS?
2) Could someone point me to a guide for installing one of these factory ROMs for a Nexus S?
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

[Q] when rooted android, can lose official android os?

hi i am newbie
I bought samsung galaxy note GT-N7000 (THL). now i just upgraded android os official from 2.3 to 4.0.3 official throught samsung kie software. I wonder. if i want to rooted this android 4.0.3, so when samsung release new official android os, so i can upgrade throught samsung kie like before?
another problem is: Which open source softwares can backup whole app and android os and kernal without rooted device?
thank you
I'm fairly certain that you can update your device through official forums once you've rooted it. You may have to root it again after the update though.
Also you'll only get over the air updates if you keep the stock rom and bootloader, if you install something like clockwork recovery you will not be able to get your updates.
I know that the premium version of titanium backup can backup data from your apps but you definitely need root access to back up the full app.
Spend some time reading through the forums for your device, try searching around a bit, you may find that a custom rom is appealing, in which case you can root, backup your apps and get a better device.
Good luck!

Noob questions..

Hey guys, I just got my galaxy nexus a few weeks ago and I really want to flash the new jelly bean os on my phone.
I live in Canada and i'm currently locked to a Canadian carrier, fido(owned by Rogers) .
Before I begin I just have a few questions.
1.) if i decide to flash this new os, will I need to worry about my phone being locked to certain carriers? Or does it automatically unlock that as well?
2.) I did a nandroid backup, but if i format data using cwm. Will that backup still be here for me to restore from?
3.) do all roms have root access, or is it only certain ones?
Thanks

[Q] Question about rooting Galaxy Note II (AT&T SGH-I317)

Downloaded the toolkit from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052779
I have the AT&T SGH-I317... unfortunately, the toolkit lists the Android version of my phone as 4.1.1, but my phone automatically downloaded and installed 4.1.2 the first time I used it the other day. My question is, do I need to wait for the toolkit to be updated with 4.1.2 for my specific phone, or alternatively, would it be safe to use the 4.1.1 version in the toolkit, or use one of the other ones listed as version 4.1.2.
I'm perfectly happy to wait if necessary. Don't want to take any chances of messing up my new phone. This will be my first rooting or unlocking of any kind. I'm an adept PC user but phones are new territory for me.
So, if someone knows how I should proceed, I'd be very grateful for the assistance. I'm asking this here because I'm a new member and can't yet post in the developer forums.
Thanks!
I haven't tried the toolkit since the latest update. I know the Sprint version has CF-Auto root. Check your thread for that one. It worked for me after the 4.1.2 update with no issues.

I seriously need help with this

Okay, so my Android 4.3 AT&T Galaxy S4 is rooted (through Kingo) and the only reason I did it in the first place was to flash CyanogenMod or some stock Android variant. Now I'm being told I can't install a custom recovery on my phone for two reasons. 1) AT&T locked the bootloader 2) I'm running Android 4.3.
Now, I'm considering unrooting my phone but even that's unclear and confusing, and it's hard to find people on these forums who are willing to help with these relatively simple (to the non-newbs, of course) things.
Can I flash a custom recovery? Can I run CyanogenMod or any good ROM? If no, will I be able to, ever? If no, how do I unroot? Would it be wise to just wait for the next update from Samsung or AT&T and install it so I automatically unroot?
Much appreciated.
