[Q]How to overclock Your Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 P5100? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Samsungs tablets, I have HTC HD2 so i have a little knowledge about firmwares, kernels, roms, flashing and etc. and now i have problem with galaxy tab 2 p5100.
The facts that i know correct me if i am wrong:
1-custom kernels for overclocking doesn't work on stock firmware (ICS,JB)
2-you need to have either AOKP 4.1.1 or CM(CyanogenMod) 9,10,10.1 for overclocking
after flashing CM 10 on my TAB, i tried to flash AOKP_p51xx_1-52GHz_v2-2.zip using CWR but phone stuck on "Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" logo then i flashed CMOC10-Kernel the same way and it worked so the questions are:
1-why AOKP kernel didnt work i saw posts indicating that it is working, is there anyhing that i have to do before or after flashing this kernel?
2-i have succeeded to flash CMOC10-Kernel, i went to the settings - performance and i change my max frequency to 1380 and set it on boot, so is it enough? or i have to use special program to overclock GPU?
3-what governor is the best for this tablet?
and final question, it is about auto brightness setting, it seems CM 10 can't detect room's light level correctly is there anyway to solve this or change sensitivity of light sensor?

1. The aokp kernel did work, because if it didn't your phone would have never booted!
2. That's enough, but a word of advice, over clocking reduces batter life and increases heat.
3. The governor you want to use totally depends on you and your usage!
4. Try a different auto brightness app like lux auto brightness

1. Phone(tablet) didn't boot after flashing aokp kernel! it stuck on Samsung logo (not cyanogenmod logo) as i mentioned in my post the kernel that worked is CMOC10-Kernel produced by johnsel ... wonder why aokp kernel didnt work!
2. i know the consequences of overclocking, reducing battery life(sometimes hardware life) more heat it is predictable, i was just asking is there any program apart from default cyanogenmod settings to see GPU clock also because all programs that i tried they just show me cpu clock not gpu! of course it is not so important ... just interesting!
3.i am using smartass v2 on my htc hd2 it is recommended governor for my htc, but i don't see that option in cm10 is there any place (some website) that i can get information about governors?
4.thanks for your suggestion i will try that :good:
Finally thank you so much for helping me, i appreciate that :good::good::good:

1.I'm not so sure about your problem, report it to the dev for it to be solved

[ROM Idea]Dual performance mode

Hi guys I am a newbie here,i bought a samsung captivate just 3 days back and i have been loving it so far i will soon be flashing a custom rom.....!
well as i was looking for features of various roms,i felt i need a rom that has a dual performance mode
like i am a huge fan of graphics so i like decorating my phone and i am ready to sacrifice my battery life but it sometime happens that i need to go out for a day or two and my battery dies!
so here is what i am getting at,can we have rom that has say 2 performance mode one with all nice graphics text animations and all high end stuff and other mode where i get decent features and gives me better battery life....
like i should be able to swap between the modes....
i don know if such a thing is even possible but just my 2 cents...

ok, cyanogenmod supports this out of the box, under cyanogenod settings>performance>cpu settings>available governors
but if your using a different rom, just grab a new kernel, such as talon, and get set cpu and then you can change there governors as well, performance mode or on demand or conservative...

i think there are "governors" / apps you can download that will let you set up profiles and save them so you can quick switch between different profiles.

Well. A true governor is kernel dependant. And so any apps that you download to do it without a supporting kernel will just be (close this app) (turn down brightness) that kind of stuff. Where as set CPU and others like that will actually throttle the CPU down. Lower power consumption down internally. Which will actually have a real benefit.

could look into undervolting as well
Use Launchers
I dont know if this may help you for now, but what I do as a simple fix for this is run two different launchers. I keep touchwiz slimmed down with no widgets. I also put toggles and shortcuts on it to turn off multiple things on the phone that I dont want running all the time etc. I normally run ADW setup the way I like it but when I need to go somewhere for extended periods I just use home switcher to switch to TW.
Just something I found that works ok for me.
Hmmmm thanks guys !
I request the moderators to close this thread !

[Kernel][ICS] TFQ Scorched Kernel ICS v1.0.29 (2012-12-21)

Team Fah-Q Presents...
Scorched Kernel for Blaze ICS v1.0.29
Built with the Linaro Toolchain v4.7, the purpose of this kernel is to fix bugs, add features, add performance, and hopefully save some battery where possible. However, battery life will most likely not be as good as stock, since the device is overclocked and DVFS (dynamic frequency and voltage scaling) is turned off. I have done my very best to squeeze every ounce of battery life out of this device.
It includes a brand new CPU Governor called Scorched, developed by me and based on the lagfree governor. It focuses on saving power and reducing the usage of the higher CPU frequencies unless necessary, while still keeping responsiveness and performance intact.
The kernel should work with any ROM that is derived from the stock Samsung ICS release IMM76D.LH5, however I recommend using it with the Tweaked ROM, as that is what I develop it against.
This is a kernel several months in the making. Hope you like it
It is STRONGLY advised to do a full nandroid backup in CWM before installing the kernel,
as the installer will overwrite kernel modules in /system/lib/modules. You've officially been warned
NOTE: This thread is reserved for bug reports, logcats, and other development related discussion. General discussion, questions, etc should be posted in this threadKernel Features

FAQ
FAQ
What is the Scorched CPU Governor?
The Scorched CPU governor is rather similar to the lagfree governor both in its source code and its purpose. The difference is that while lagfree seeks to give performance-on-demand by increasing immediately to the maximum CPU frequency, Scorched jumps immediately to a mid-point frequency and then gracefully increases or decreases the CPU frequency as required. This provides both performance-on-demand as well as extended battery life.
multi core support
is there anyway of changing it to were we have multi core support ( in regards to offlining 2nd 3rd etc cores ) to save battery by chance cause some other kernels ive tested have that capability if i knew how to do so myself ( im slowly learning with massive reprocussions lol ) but would that be possible at all
awesome finally some scorchness for the blaze

Many thanks for your hard work.
However I've been using this kernel for a couple of days now with tweaked 2.1, and deleted battery stats but my battery life is really poor.
I've left the system essentially in standby for several full charge cycles but I only get 10 hours with next to no use, if lucky.
With stock kernel and Blz3r v3 and with heavy usage I would easily get 14 hours.
I'm still going to keep on using it and characterizing it and hope it gets better.

Not sure what to tell you. I've attached an image with my stats on it. That's 7 hours, mostly standby, dropping 30%, with wifi calling, exchange sync, gmail sync all on.
And this is more of a general Q&A thread topic also

In my own testing, I have found that it is often worse to turn off a core completely, than to aim for a lower clock speed on both active cores. My theory is that the increase of speed with multithreading speeds up processing over the single corr, thus staying at a higher frequency for less time.
Just a personal observation.
I'm New
I'm sorry if i sound like an idiot, but Does this work on the stock ICS rom? I'm rooted btw
and does it support undervolting?
Thank you, Very stable and responsive kernel. Only issue I've had after installing the kernel is that when I try to send an app from play.google.com to my phone it doesn't show up. I can still install from within the phone itself just not website to phone, not sure if it's related to this Kernel or not but started after flashed it.
Again I'm not 100% positive that it's related so will need to do some more testing...

That's about right for the benchmark. I'm considering going a slightly different route with the kernel that may reduce performance a bit but should up battery life significantly.
Sick 2 year old at home so I've had limited time to play, unfortunately.

Hope your 2 year old gets well soon. Yes sacrificing a bit of performance to up the battery is definitelyitly worth it. Also seems like your scorched will outilizelize 384 and above, not sure how much battery can be saved but basic call functions and such can perfectly work on 192Mhz

[Q] What's the best Official ROM with good battery life?

Sorry if you guys has been asked about this question for the nth times, I'm new to this phone and I'm a total noob in Android.
So, here's my scenario, I have this Samsung Nexus S Version M200 running currently in CM 10.1 Nightly firmware. It's good as far as I'm using it but I'm having a problem with the battery life. I usually charge it 2 times a day. What I do with my phone? Mostly play games and it will only last 3-4 hours max play then I have to charge it again. But to summarize it it will not last a whole day even with normal use, minimal games.
The question now is:
Should I go to Official ROM?
If yes, which version with long lasting battery with GPS and other services on and playing games max?
If no, should I stick to CM 10.1?
If no with CM 10.1, which ROM should I install?
Thanks in advance, I actually have a lot of questions since I'm so curious and want to know more about this phone, but I'll just add it later.
Don't worry since you're new no one will get mad.
Anyways, there won't be that huge of a battery life difference between most of these roms, it just depends how your settings are and how you are using your phone. I've tried most of the roms for the NS and I can tell you my team favorites are CM 10.1 Stable with Marmite 8.7 Bigmem kernel and JellyShot with the same kernel. Those two have given me the best stability+performance+speed+battery life combo.
The way you setup your cpu governer and i/o scheduler as well as some developer settings and a few more things can definitely make an impact on increasing battery life. Here's how I have my phone setup:
ROM: CM 10.1 Stable
Kernel: Marmite 8.7 Bigmem
Governer: During the day I use Smartassv2 with 100 min 1000 max, during the night I switch it to On Demand with 100 min 800 max
I/O: I find deadline to be the best and cfq to be the 2nd best especially if you are a person that has multiple apps in use its best for multitasking but if you're just doing one thing at a time (Youtube vids etc) stick with deadline
Developer: I set the 3 animation options all to OFF.
For your phone settings, if you don't need all those sync options on I'd turn them off, same goes for auto-sync/background data (you can find these options in data usage).
There are apps out there like Greenify which are great for saving you extra battery life, it puts apps to sleep when they're not in use. Try the free version it works great.
Lastly everything starts on how you first install your rom, I'd recommend a completely clean install. I use Philz Touch Recovery its free and you can find it here. The way I install roms is:
1. Wipe Data/Factory reset
2. Wipe Cache
3. Go to Mounts & Storage and format these: System, Data, Cache, Boot
4. Go to Advanced and wipe: Dalvik then Fix Permissions
5. Install order: Rom first, Gapps second, Kernel last
6. Reboot
Thats about all the tips I have. Sometimes your phones battery just doesn't cut it, some people claim to get 5 hours screen time etc, but I never get that kind of amazing battery life I think my battery just sucks. But mess around with those 2 roms I suggested and those settings, see if you like it. Goodluck.
Just bought a second hand S as a second phone and found your reply one of the most useful for setting it up so far. Thank you.

Thank you for the quick reply...
I have a follow up questions though. Hehehe.
1. How can I change my Kernel?
2. If I can change it, will I lost my data? What are the results? Because I've done a little search about Marmite and I've read it's good.
3. What's Governor? LOL Sorry, I'm total newbie. I don't get it. And the Developer? Haha!
4. If I do a clean install what would happen to my data? Does all my app data will be lost?
So far that's what's in my mind. I'll follow up again! Thanks! You're a big help!
@purpse You're welcome, glad I could be of some help.
@khimois
1. Well to change kernel you first need to download the proper one, get the "cm" version of Marmite that means its for Cyanogenmod based roms. To install it you need to use a recovery. Something like Clockwork Recovery its free you can get it by installing the "Rom Manager" app. Basically recovery is a thing you boot into its kind of like safe mode for PC's, but this will let you install Roms/Kernels, etc.
2. You won't lose your data by flashing a new kernel but you will lose your data if you wipe data through the recovery mode. If you really want to keep your data and apps you can use an app like Titanium backup it backs up everything for you to install later after wipes.
3. CPU Governor is a just how your CPU is going to be functioning. There are a bunch of different settings you can choose from. Some for example: Conservative (this saves battery by using less cpu power it will clock at lower frequencies) also On Demand (this setting tells the cpu to only work based on the demand so if you're phones not doing anything it will clock to the lowest speed you set the "min" value to but if you're playing a game or something it will scale up towards your "max" value)
Developer options can be found after you go to "About Phone" and click on build number 7 times, then you can access developer options from the main settings menu. These options let you do a few cool things.
4. Yes a clean install would wipe your data and apps, its like a brand new phone. There are some apps like I mentioned "Titanium backup" which can help you save your apps and data, google about that to learn more if you're interested.
And no problem, glad to help, everyone is new at everything at some point. You're learn that flashing roms and kernels will become repetitive you will always want to try new ones and then it just becomes so easy to do.
On most android devices Jelly Bean consumes twice as much battery as compared to Ice Cream Sandwich. You might want to consider downgrading if battery life is your top priority.

Thanks for the great help, I'm still in the process of absorbing it. Sorry, I have follow up questions:
So, if I want to clean install everything? What should I do? What are the things I need to consider? What are the things I need to backup?
I have an existing ClockWorkRecovery v6.0.0.6, is it okay to use this? Or should I update it?
What are the risk in updating ClockWorkRecovery?
EDIT: Can you also provide me a link for Marmite? I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Just stick with the stock rooted rom for a month . Then you may flash new roms ..
The battery life is the same for ICS and JB .. But standby battery backup has been improved in jellybean...
But free ram vaialable will be lower in JB after flashing gapps package..
The three roms which I will suggest you are 1. Xenon HD stable(mix of slimbean, aosp,cm,pa) 2.Slimbean(sleek and black) 3.Carbon Rom
And use Marmite kernal non cm version for the above roms.. Alrthough Slimbean comes with latest marmite kernel..
I have always been with stock.
Few options that saved battery life:
1. If you have apps that turn on GPS when the app is not running (like Life360), its best to turn off the GPS when you are not using it. Power Control widget helps a lot here.
2. Turn off Wifi & mobile network Location under Settings->Location Access.
3. Turn off Google Now
4. Turn off Background Location Reporting for Google Maps.
5. Uninstall Facebook app. (the messenger app is ok)
My phone have gone from being left with 20% after 8 hours to around 60% after I have done the above. If you are having an old phone, consider getting a new battery as well, since the stock battery would probably be at least 2 years old by now.

Agree.
I am using Nexus S with lastest CM 10.1 (release)
You might want to avoid :
Google now
Localisation (using GSM or Wifi)
Facebook : it is such a RAM eater it will have side effects on all the others apps, better use web app or Friendcaster
If you don't mind, de-activate 3G when you don't need it
Generally speaking, avoid large memory footprint apps, use opera (classic) as your daily browser and tune notifications.
Best one that I tried is Marmite kernel.
Also you need have a task manager to kill programs/
Also It's DisableService application is a must.

[Q] How to set the frequency for battery, with stock kernel?

I have only flashed the rom not kernel in LG P500.But want to see if the frequency of the processor can help me.My battery drains very fast and i don't play any games etc also.
My minimum is 320 Mhz & maximum is 600 Mhz.I want to do mainly coz battery is draining too fast & not once i am able to charge full. Thanks

Hmmm you may have to calibrate your battery
Use this app

all CM based roms shoud have in settings development a thing to activate to show you CPU usage, if you tick that option, CPU usage(frequency) it will be shown on home screen in a little widget
or use CPUSpy
if battery drains fast it is because of various problems, wifi, apps that runs in background and prevent deepsleep and causes wakelocks, but CPUSpy it will list all hungry apps and all CPU usage
cpu frequency cannot be set over 600 with stock kernel, but it can be changed with some apps like SetCPU or CPUMaster (root required), this apps have profiles for different situations (screen off, charging, gaming, music, talking, net surfing etc), if I remember SetCPU can be found here on XDA free, search it

Thanks, but in this rom there is one feature called 'performance control' and it shows exactly what cpu spy shows.I have used cpu spy and it does not show hungry apps, maybe it is cpu spy plus.
I AM CHECKING REGULARLY AND MY PHONE IS NOT GOING INTO DEEP SLEEP AT ALL EVEN WHEN SCREEN OFF.
And i have installed only whatsapp and titanium. My battery was at 80% when it freezed and when i took the battery out and restarted it battery was at 40%.
And i am concerned about the minimum frequency which is 320 in this,it can be changed to 122 which is not being used coz of the default settings.I s it safe to do?
with stock kernel any freqv is stable, but it will not help, something is preventing deepsleep, uninstall some apps that you suspect that can do this problem, search web abouth apps that you have installed on your phone, or read pacman thread or change kernel, I do not think a custom rom runs well with LG stock kernel, and when you flash a custom rom that rom comes with a custom kernel, try DJNOxD or sweetnsour 2.6 kernels
change governor and test it, maybe it will help, I allways use smartass governor but search forum for governors preventing deepsleep

I think my phone is not going into deep sleep and it is coz of the minimum frequency which is 320.
But still i will try battery calibration but i can't install from google store. Is there anyother place or can you attach here the apk?

Yeah i have already installed betterbattery stats, lets see.Don't if i will be able to understand what it shows, set it to partial wakelock though.Pac Rom thread is not responding since three days,i mean no reply no help as yet.
Tomorrow i will do to things, one is remove this rom and have another & second is to remove the gapps as well and reflash.I do not know how to this. Then i will know if rom was responsible for this or not and decide for the kernel therafter.
Should i make new thread for that or you will tell here only?
or you can change rom if you do not solve the problem

oh, sry, I'am a big NOOB, all JB 4.2.2 are using 3.0.8 kernels that have big problems with wifi battery drain, it is a common problem with all JB roms, disable wifi And drain should be ok, but I recomand to use an ICS rom that uses 2.6 kernels
but this problem is known by everybody and discussed to all JB roms threads and in link that I provided you, so, it cannot be done by me or you, we have to wait for the people that can do real things in here, developers
this problem is because Qualcom and Google does not support old ARMv6 processors in JB, so with all the magic from XDA developers some problems cannot be solved

I do not use wi fi,i use only 3g.Mine kernel version it says is 2.6.35.10.
I used BB stats but did not understand much, only thing i could understand was gps location provider running all the time.
Phone did not sleep for one second neither this 'gps location provider'
By the way which cpu spy or cpu spy plus you were talking about which tells about the apps consuming battery, coz even in the cpu spy plus it is the same like cpu spy.
I was mistaken, it is better battery stats

any solutions to save our beloved S5

hello there are many wonderful note 7 port's or even s8 and s9 based roms out there for our S5 :good:
but i was wondering if there is any solutions to remove the lag of games when they are left in ram
i know it's a note 7 port's bug but i'm really sick of it
i would everytime when a new rom comes out try it but then i remember that it has that kind of lag
so if you konw anything just tell me i'll be grateful
thank you

You need to adjust kernel governor and its tunables. These can be done on kernels that are tweakable. Please read and search in threads to find out how many kernels you have available to your device (around 3-4 if my mind doesnt fool me). Then find out which of them can be tweaked. Some kernels are tweaked by kernel adiutor whereas some others can be tweaked by using their own special app (e.g. boeffla kernel). Then what you need to do is to make a trial-error adjustment. Do NOT forget! Each phone has different chipset (depending not only on different variants but also to different pvs values and dates of release of device (i.e. different phone batches). So NEVER take customizations from "other user". Do your own customizations yourself.
Also, even if it is easy to directly pass to performance governor, you should know that this governor keeps cpu stable at highest clock (~2.5GHz) which means it will heat your device and can irreversibly damage it.
With correct customization and optimization you can run even latest games on nonzperformance governor. Read kernel adiutor thread, governors/schedulers thread and much more to inform yourself. On my 5 year old note3 (snap800), I can easily play PUBG mobile (obviously on lowest graphics). With snap801/805 on s5, you can do even better. So, be thorough and patient. Tweak part by part and give every tweak some time to measure whether it is good or not. If you work that way, you can prepare your s5 to be able to play without lags (of course you cannot play the toughest most graphic-intensive online gsmes on highest settings, but I think you got the jist of it).
There is a very old but also very good post by Kippur on XDA, about the many much opportunities that XDA devs provided to users and how they are using it. That should be quoted on every OP

don't use touchwiz or heavy ROMs if device doesn't handle it well enough. Use aosp based ROMs, change CPU governors, modify and experiment, etc. Or you can try a newer android device if you can. Although if games perform better on touchwiz and your happy with touchwiz, so be it if you enjoy those ROMs that look like Note7.
Also the S5 is already saved imo. Great aosp kernels with a variety of governors and i/o schedulers , plus voltage control and more, and tw kernels also. Then there is virtual memory tuning if you wanted to as well, modded adreno gpu drivers and more. Generally lots of support. Snapdragon makes it easier too and open source so there's so much ROMs for aosp, kernels and generally lots of stuff to try. Oreo support also. This phone is more than capable of gaming even today at decent settings and resolutions. Try using GL tools as well. The only struggle I see would be PSP emulation, pscx or dolphin emulation but overclocks and pushing the device to the limits, i could do 30-60fps on star wars force unleashed emulation at the right settings. More intensive emulation, yeah a newer phone helps

Yes. Re-read my answer. You need to read threads for kernel adiutor, governors/schedulers and much much more to inform yourself. YOU need to read and inform yourself. We cannot do it for you. Once you read and learn what are they, you will be able to control and understand what can be tweaked and for how many amounts. If you expect everything from devs, that is never going to happen. If you are lazy, you can just choose performance governor for short time and then revert it back.
Hey! I'm still out on the look for a nice TW based kernel for the klteduos (FD/MD). If you have any luck out there replacing the Espheni's one, please let me know. For the Noise rom, we're supposed to use the Smartpack kernel, but so far, I'm unable to install it. I hope someone will be able to help me soon.
Good Luck!

I'm sorry to hear that! My advice is to use flash a original ROM so you can recover your device properly or, at least, to flash the Noise V4. It's not really supposed to behave like that, but I can't help ya, since I can't flash this kernel : /
Take a look at these mod gpu drivers. They really do help gaming performance as well as UI and camera performance. I used the latest ones and they are amazing. These could be nice in many custom ROMs as well. Combined with a great custom kernel and ROM, it really shows. I get better gaming performance even in PSP emulation as the GPU is no longer always in full load until I bump it onto a setting higher in game than I used to be able to. In some ways it will also save battery as games will feel less demanding onto the GPU and the UI but overall best performance.
This may reduce a lot of lag in some games. Then combined with GL tools to change settings within game or reduced resolutions as well.
This will definitely help the S5 a lot and its already one of my favourite devices. It feels ancient compared to modern devices but still fast.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...s-qualcomm-adreno-330-drivers-t3794305/page11
I did use aicp nougat 7.1.2 , custom kernel was venom kernel based on boeffla kernel. I undervolted but kept stock clocks and everything. I could've overclocked which helps but I don't like the temps so yeah.
Then intellithermal and such to keep thermals in check but the throttling wasnt that bad, undervolting did reduce a lot of throttling also which helps a lot in gaming. Removed some system apps which somewhat helped. But these mod drivers should work in any custom ROM from 6.0+ android, marshmallow and above. It will help in Oreo also.
Elite performance! Although it may be worth trying older or newer android versions, benchmark them and test which feels the fastest along with the kernel tweaks and ROM tweaks. Personally nougat for me is the best android version for the phone in performance and battery and many kernels. This may also work on touchwiz based ROMs if you don't want to get away from touchwiz. A compatible touchwiz kernel, those Adreno 330 mod drivers if they work on touchwiz and the best touchwiz rom you find. Just remember that the less demanding the custom ROM is, the better battery life will be and gaming as less RAM will be used by the system, less gpu usage and less CPU usage. Freeing that up will be useful to add for games as less is taken up by system and more will be taken up by other tasks. Stability of ROMs can sometimes be a factor.
