[ROM][ROOT][CWM] AreaRom for US ZTE Z990 - Android General

VERY FIRST AreaRom RELEASE for the ZTE-Z990 Phones!
THE AREAROM way to take your Z990 from Box-fresh to rooted n' rockin!
EASY 2 file method. 5 minutes, and your phone will be rooted, have a AreaRom Branded CWM installed, and latest 'under the hood' improvements.
ROM Features:
Based on latest GB release
Rooted! No need for adb or any other procedure
APN for StraightTalk added to standard AT&T APNs (May need to add your own APN for your data to work. Google is your friend)
'Big Data' standard (/data is as big as your sd-ext partition on your sdcard, if you choose to partition it. If not, will still work)
ext4 and swap file system supported in ROM and kernel (kernel already in ROM)
PERMANENT AreaRom made CWM 5 Recovery automatically installed for you
De-odexed ROM (programs load faster)
Root Browser Lite already installed
Quick Boot already installed
ICS Camera installed
Many other features!
Works with or without partitioning your sdcard. (If you DO partition, though, your /data partition will be as large as the sd-ext you create)
Note: CWM limits restore to 2GB..But, 2GB is PLENTY of room
NOTE: If you use a sd-ext partition, DO NOT USE LINK2SD OR ANY APP TO MOVE PROGRAMS! It already moves them...
IF your sdcard fails, or you remove the sdcard, you will lose all programs and everything stored in /data
=========================================
STEP BY STEP INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
Download both files below. Preferred way is via computer, then copy files to the sdcard (NOT in a folder)
Rename AreaRom-cwm-update.zip to just "update.zip".
Boot your phone into Recovery.
Select "Flash update.zip" or, if some Merits, select "Factory restore" option (or something close to it), and press the BACK button
When the temporary CWM comes up, select "wipe data/factory reset", press HOME
Select "install zip from sdcard", and press HOME
Select "choose zip from sdcard", press HOME
Select "AreaRom-Z990-2.2.0.zip", press HOME
When done flashing, select "Advanced", then "Reboot Recovery", press HOME
When CWM reboots, you can either "Reboot system now", or, you can partition the sdcard.
To partition, select "advanced" (NOTE: Partitioning erases all data on SDCARD...Make backups)
Select "Partition Sdcard"
Select any size you want for sd-ext (Recommend 2048 or less, or CWM has issues restoring backups to the sd-ext)
Any size for swap (If adding swap partition, you need an app like Swapper2 from the Play Store to use)
When done partitioning, select "Reboot system now"
FIRST BOOT MAY TAKE AWHILE! 5-10 minutes, possibly!

[Q] Noob Guides

[tl;dr: Need a walkthrough from stock to custom ROM written for dumbasses.]
Is there any way we could get some noob-friendly guides to getting from a stock phone state to a custom ROM? For some of us, this is our first Android phone, and most of you are veterans. I've tried to follow the instructions you've posted, but I just cannot get CWM to flash properly. I've ODIN'd three times now. So would anyone mind writing a guide in a way that, like, your grandma could understand? Maybe then I'd have a shot at a custom ROM.
Kuzar: Try the script I wrote here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15395681&postcount=19
It's fairly simple:
-plug in your phone to your computer via USB
-enable adb debugging in Settings> Applications> Development > Enable USB Debugging (on your phone)
-Double click on the run.bat (from your computer)
I believe this is all you need. This should install clockwork, at which point you can follow instructions in any rom thread to install their rom. let me know if it doesn't work, or if you need any more assistance.
download:
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/recovery.zip (This is the recovery.)
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/update.zip (this is the update)
http://www.4shared.com/get/HpENkmN8/...rer_v2124.html (this is root explorer.)
open the first file on your computer and take out the recovery file inside it and place it on the sd card.
place the second file on the sd card
and install the last file.
now open root explorer scroll down and find sdcard,
now open it and find recovery and long press on it. hit copy. now hit the back button once.
now find system. open it.
find bin. open it.
hit on the top mount r/w
hit paste and overwrite the file.
next, power down the device and instead of powering on regularly, press volume down+ power button you should be in the recovery mode.
if it is blue then hit install packages,
if it is red you should be good to go.
NOW YOU HAVE A CWM
make a back up!
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
*Now before you Flash, Only if this is your FIRST time Flashing a Custom ROM otherwise ignore the mounts/unmount part*
MAKE SURE YOUR MOUNTS LOOK LIKE THIS: (Go to mounts and storage from CWM recovery)
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
- Now its safe to Flash the .zip
after you flash, go back to mounts and storage (before rebooting, AGAIN IGNORE if this isnt your First time) and make sure your mounts look like this:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
UNMOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Reboot *this should take 3-5 minutes*(if it is your first time you should hear a voice talking from the phone dont worry its normal)

[HUAWEI U8350][Orange Barcelona] Rom backup and restore

If you already tried to backup the rom from your Huawei u8350 Boulder with CWM you must have realised it doesn't work. The culprilt? Huawei made 2 changes from the normal Android partition pattern: we got a /cust partition, thought so that phone provider can install their bloatwares, and for unknown reasons we got 2 userdata partitions.
But there is a solution, thanks to Gulyuk's great work.
Prerequisite:
A Huawei u8350 Boulder / Orange Barcelona (obviously),
A working ClockWorkMod Recovery for U8350,
The two attached scripts
How to use (again, i'll take Gulyuk's explanations):
Backup boot, system, cust via CWM recovery
Download Attached File backup_by_Gulyuk.zip (445.33K)
Number of downloads: 0 and put it on the microSD card (do not unzip).
Ensure that you have enough (about 261 MB) free space on the microSD card.
Enter ClockworkMod Recovery.
Select "install zip from sdcard" in the menu, then select the backup_by_Gulyuk.zip file. Wait for several minutes while the backup script works.
Select "reboot system now" to exit from recovery.
The backup script should create the firmware directory on the microSD card (seen as /sdcard/firmware from the phone) with these files:
boot.img — dump of the boot partition (kernel and initramfs);
recovery.img — dump of the recovery partition (the one you installed);
system.img — dump of the system partition in yaffs2 format;
cust.img — dump of the cust partition in yaffs2 format.
data.img — dump of the userdata partition in yaffs2 format.
data2.img — dump of the userdata partition in yaffs2 format.
Running the backup script when the /sdcard/firmware directory already exists overwrites the previous contents of this directory (including any extra files which were placed there). Currently there is no way to keep more than one firmware backup by this method, unless you rename the firmware directory manually (but then the backup cannot be restored until you rename or copy the directory back).
Restore boot, system, cust via CWM recovery
Download Attached File restore_by_Gulyuk.zip (260.83K)
Number of downloads: 0 and put it on the microSD card (do not unzip).
Ensure that you have the firmware directory on your microSD card with valid firmware image files (boot.img, recovery.img, system.img, cust.img, data.img, data2.img).
Enter ClockworkMod Recovery.
Select "install zip from sdcard" in the menu, then select the restore_by_Gulyuk.zip file. Wait for several minutes while the restore script works.
Select "reboot system now" to exit from recovery.
Warning! Warning! Warning!
I tested both scripts on by own u8350 and it's still working, but I give absolutely no warranty about these scripts and how they works. If your phone burns, bricks, looses faith in you or try to run away in love with the neighbourg's dog IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
If you want to share your wonderfull customised ROM with these scripts delete data.img and data2.img before sharing as they contains your personnal datas (google accounts, emails, and so on...).
before to try someone else's ROM, backup yours, then copy the "firmware" drawer from the SDCard in a safe place (dedicated to a french fellow that lost its keyboard configuration ).
"install zip from sdcard" option not given
Hello. Noob here. I'm following the instructions for the section "Backup boot, system, cust via CWM recovery", but the "install zip from sdcard" option is not appearing so I need some guidance, please.
General info: Orange Barcelona, UK, unlocked, rooted and verified, no sim inserted. CWM is installed.SuperUser is installed. Debugging and Unknown Sources are enabled, Fastboot disabled. The sd card is mounted and has plenty of spare capacity. Recovery Manger, Restore.zip and backup_Gulyuk.zip are on the card.
Can someone please point out what the noob is doing wrong?
Thanks,
Kate
EDIT: I started again from scratch and now the phone just reboots from CWM so I now no longer get a menu at all.

Is it safe to format tablet?

hi.
I have applied several custom ROMs and apparently each install overwrites previous but some folders remain the same.
It's there a way to make sure everything is cleared before installing a new ROM?
What about the format options in CWM?
I'm using nexness pro2 rom, installed with CWM.
THANX
Walter
There should be an option to wipe data in settings. This should have the desired effect.

There is indeed an option to Wipe Data/Factory reset, however this option doesn't seem to delete old folders in the sd card (even the internal storage /storage/sdcard0).
For example, if i have an application installed and it creates some folder in the root of the /storage/sdcard0, this folder will not be removed when I do a wipe. Does that make sense?
I've read that this is how it's meant to be, since some devices don't have an external SD card, so it would be hard to flash a new ROM if sdcard0 was wiped.
That being said, I would ask, is it safe to ADB into it, and then delete everything from there?
Is there any other "better" option to make sure I have a clean/fresh start?
Thanks.
Walter
You can try the hard reset code from the dialer *2767*3855# not sure if it works on the 7.7 though. You could painfully delete items with root explorer, just be sure they aren't being used by your current rom.

These are instructions from a post in the General section. They maybe helpful. Specifically, step six - if you research some of the older posts you find discussions regarding complete wipes.
How to Flash A Custom ROM-
Download a ROM of your choice from the All Things Root section (The Forum you are in) You can find direct links to each of them in the All Things Root Guide that is stickied at the top of this forum.
1- Once downloaded, its recommended to download it from your computer and place it on your phone, put it on the root of your internal or external sd cards. Root meaning not in a folder.
2- Reboot into recovery using Quick Reboot.
3- Using your volume keys to scroll and your power key to select, scroll down tand select "Wipe data/Factory Reset" then scroll to "Yes" and select.
4- Scroll down and select "Wipe Cache Partition" and then select "Yes"
5- Scroll down and select "Advanced" and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and then select "Yes" then scroll down and select "Go Back"
6- Sroll down and select "mounts and storage" then scroll down and select ONLY these 3 listed, "format data" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format cache" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format system" and then select "Yes". Then scroll down to and select "Go Back"
7- Then scroll down to "Install Zip From Sd", if you put the ROM on your external SD card select "choose zip from SD". If you put it on your internal scroll down and select 'choose zip from internal". Then after you selected one of those depended on where you put the ROM, scroll down and select the ROM and then Select "Yes".
the rest i am sure you have done before. Hope this helps.

i do the same steps enumerated above whenever i flash a new firmware. in addition to that i also wipe the internal sdcard to remove old folders/files.
take note that you need CWM to do that.
DON'T DO ANY FACTORY RESET/WIPE/FORMAT from SETTINGS/STOCK RECOVERYif you are using ICS because you risk frying your EMMC.

H7100 The alternate way of rooting + CWM + Adjust of internal space

Recently, I wanted to root my H7100 but I was unable to connect my phone to computer. So, I decided to root it in other way. I wanted to get some more space and to get a Hardmaster ROM so I decided to experiment.
First, I found RootMaster apk. So I tried it and it worked. (http://d-h.st/Ctf)
Then I have done following (see the attachments):
1. picture - Press the root button
2. picture - Press the root button
3. picture - Press the purple button
Well, now you are rooted.
Next step was to put recovery into my phone.
1. I have downloaded and installed the app Flashify from the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify)
2. Download Recovery.img (http://d-h.st/12M)
3. Flash it through Flashify (press Recovery image and then Choose a file, in Open From choose your file explorer and locate a recovery.img and choose Yup!
My next step was to increase the internal memory with this app (http://d-h.st/Z0P)
1. Install it as any other APK
2. Run it and choose the size you wish, but DON'T CHOOSE 3GB - it will erase your internal sd card
3. Press Reboot recovery and Wipe Data/Factory Reset the phone.
And if you want to get rid of chinese bloatware, get some speed for your phone, or some other tweakes you can install Hardmaster's ROM. But not by his way, we can do it the faster way.
1. Download Harmaster's ROM backup (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B20F9DClLNBbUzRCWjI4bVJBN1U/edit)
2. Put it into sdcard/clockworkmod/backups/ (make a new folder here and put the backup into it)
3. Flash into recovery (turn off the phone, press the Volume UP + Power button at the same time...you will see the traditional CWM screen and wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache (Advanced-Wipe Dalvik cache) and format system (mounts and storage), after that press Backup and Restore and choose the name of your folder where you have put the backup
4. Wait for it...
5. Reboot the system and after a while (5-10 min.) the phone will boot.
Well, now it's up to you to develop some new things into this phone. If you want some tweakes you can install Exposed installer.
Happy rooting

[GUIDE] I managed to remove encryption!

pretty sure this works, phone no longer says it is encrypted in settings, and i can browse internal storage in the TWRP file manager.
PREREQUISITES
This TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...p-ish-twrp-3-2-1-honor-9-running-gsi-t3818442
An 8.1/9 GSI
Unlocked Bootloader
HOW TO
Flash the TWRP from the linked thread in fastboot
Download the GSI of your choice and place its system image on LOCAL external storage (either a microSD or USB-OTG)
Boot to TWRP (if necessary change the language tfrom chinese to english in the settings)
select 'wipe' and 'advanced wipe', check Data, Dalvik, Internal Storage and Cache
Wipe!
Return to the main menu and select 'Install', Select 'Install Image' and browse to your GSI on external storage
Select your GSI, you will be asked to tell TWRP what its flashing, select 'System image' and flash
Return to the main menu and repeat the wiping step
Select 'Advanced' in the main menu and 'Fix DataEncryption', swipe to fix then reboot to system
You should now have an unencrypted device! (it worked for me)
I am not responsible if you brick your device, and a nuclear war starts because of it.
You WILL loose all of your data, so back up what you need first.
