I can't ads custom ringtones, notifications or alarms to stock, rooted JB 4.1.1. I have tried to add the sounds to system>media>notifications /alarms / ringtones...no luck. Once I copy the sounds, they are not playable and are unrecognized by any of my media players.
Any thoughts?
Only changes to my phone where I had to take my 32gb SD card out to copy the files to a new 64gb card. While the memory card was out I received calls and texts which went to a default notification now I can change it back.

I was fighting the same battle! I figured out it was a permissions issue. I couldn't even create files or folders initially from any file explorer. I had loaded the Root66 Jellybean ROM. My friend recommended to run the "Fix Permissions" in Clockwork recovery. After that, I was able to write and copy files. But then, none of my ringtones or notifications would play after I moved them to the system/media/audio/ringers folders either.
The permissions were screwed up on the files after they were copied!
Using ES File Explorer, go to your ringtones that you copied in to the system/media/audio/ringers and long press them, then scroll down to Properties. Press the Change box next to the permissions, and check mark read to User, Group, and Other, check mark write to User, and check mark execute to User, Group, and Other. Then hit OK, OK. Now they should be playable, and show up in the ringers list after a reboot!

I have been at this for days. Googling for an answer, reading all the forums, and trying some of thier remedies to no avail. I rooted my T-mobile Galaxy S without any issues, however, now I can't access my stored wallpaper, notification or ringtones or pictures stored previously to root. I can see everything in thier respective folders when I open ES File Explorer. I tried to set up a separate media folder with sub folders(RINGTONES/NOTIFICATIONS) and copying and pasting the files to no avail. I have been resorting to reloading new ringtones/notificastions on Zedge and emailing the wallpapers and my photos to myself to get them to be recognized. When I open gallery there are no pictures, even though I see all my pictures in the picture file on sd card. I currently have ROM Manager, ROM Toolbox, Tegrack Overclock and Titanium Backup. Any help in directing me to fix this probably simple issue will be more than greatly appreciated. Also all my music shows up on my Poweramp App, but when changing a ringtone, and prompted for music file no music shows up. Thanks again. VN

I'm not familiar with the Galaxy S but it sounds like a permissions issue. I know on the Galaxy S 4G the user.group on files/folders on the sdcard are set to system.sdcard_rw & the file permissions are usually rwxrwxr-x.
Check the permissions and user.group ownership to see if they look correct.
When you start the phone, or remount the SD card are you getting the Media Scanner notification? Your phone may not be checking your SD card for media. If you're using poweramp, check the settings for library to make sure it's not disabling the built-in media scanner for the folders you have your files in.
You can also try going to Phone Settings - Applications - Manage - All - Media Storage, then clear the data, and reboot.
You can also try making a backup of your sd card onto your computer, then formatting it to fat32 and putting the files back to see if it'll read them again. I've had issues before where the phone wouldn't recognize it unless it was fat32.
[ROOT][MOD][HOW TO] Disable Presidential Alert Text Messages
After reading this thread on how to remove the severe weather alerts, I took it upon myself to find a way to remove Presidential Alerts, which is not an option in the stock ROM. Sure enough, I found the preferences file that the stock messaging app uses, changed a Boolean value, and profited.
What I used:
- External SD card installed in the phone.
- File explorer with root capability (ES File Explorer in my case; I'm sure Root Explorer works just as well).
- PC with a Text Editor (Wordpad worked best for me). I had seen posts on other threads (don't remember exactly which ones) that stated using text editors on the phone may not be saving files properly, so I went with the tried and true route.
Here are the steps that I used, based on memory. (Assuming root capability is already enabled on the file explorer.) Apologies if I left anything out, since it's been a few days since I did this on my phone.
1. Open the file explorer and navigate to the directory /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs
2. Make a copy of the file com.android.mms_preferences.xml and save that copy to the root of the external SD card.
3. Rename the original file to com.android.mms_preferences.xml.orig. This is backup of the original XML file just in case something goes wrong along the way.
4. Connect the external SD card to the PC by whatever means. (I unmounted/removed the external SD card, and inserted it into a card reader attached to the PC.)
5. Navigate to the disk drive corresponding to the external SD card.
6. Using the text editor, open the file com.android.mms_preferences.xml.
7. Search for the Boolean name #cmas#type##presidential#enabled.
8. Change the value associated with that Boolean from true to false.
9. Save the XML file.
10. Insert the external SD card back into the phone.
11. Copy the file com.android.mms_preferences.xml from the external SD card to the directory /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs (you're overwriting the XML file that's already there - that's OK)
12. Exit the file explorer.
13. Reboot the phone. (Not sure if this is really needed, but it's good practice.)
14. After rebooting, check the Messaging settings and verify that there is no check next to Presidential Alerts.
15. (Optional) If Presidential Alerts are not checked, go back into /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs with the file explorer and delete "com.android.mms_preferences.xml.orig".
Have fun!

Hope this isn't too much of a dumb question: Does this method work on the T-mobile Galaxy S3? I navigated to the /data folder using ES File Explorer, but it is empty. I did some file searches in case it is located in a different folder, but couldn't find it (the *.xml file referenced in the OP) that way either. Any ideas? (I'm rooted with Wicked JB v3 rom) Any other roms that would get rid of this?
Thanks

Do you have root explorer enabled in the ES File Explorer settings?
And thanks for the tip, I hate having things that aren't able to be deselected.
Though it doesn't seem to be working for me.
Deleted the original file, and upon reboot the file gets reset to "true". "False" won't stick.

Worked like a charm. Just edited it to false right on the phone... Note 2...check is gone... Thanks for the post!
I received an AMBER alert on my phone today.. first time I had ever seen that.
FYI this mod works on the S4 too. Thanks to the OP for figuring it out. I have linked your thread in the Verizon S4 General section.
Easier Way - Pros Only
I wrote something on an easier to way to get this done, but I don't recommend it for newbies. It requires a working use of the vi editor. Hope it helps those old enough to remember how to use the vi editor.

I expect there will be a lot of variation from firmware to firmware. Would be interesting to know if your method works...
In Lineage 15.1, I found:
/data/data/com.android.messaging/shared_prefs
but there are multiple preference files, none of which contain references to cmas, etws or anything else that seems related to emergency broadcasts. So, although not ideal, freezing cellbroadcastreceiver seems like my only method for now.

I know this is an old thread but seems to be the most relevant around. Yesterday, the Ontario Provincial Police issued a province-wide Amber Alert for a missing child in Thunder Bay using what would be called a "presidential alert" in the US. We'll probably have to rename it a "Bureaucratic Alert" since the plan in Canada is to use these for everything (!) according to the current thinking of the Canadian regulator (CRTC) without an opt-out.
For more (sorry: new member - can't post links), search for:
- Telecom Regulatory Policy CRTC 2017-91
- Canadian "Alert Ready" FAQ: explains the attempt to rebrand the presidential alerts, highlighting that is the mechanism used.
Running LineageOS 15.1 on a OnePlus 3T, the original method no longer works, as GeTex pointed out above. /data/data/com.android.mms doesn't exist and the prefs file mentioned is not there.
Using Titanium backup, I have frozen CellBroadcastReceiver (com.android.cellbroadcastreceiver) on my phone. Since presidential alerts will be used for everything here (stupid, stupid, stupid), the need to turn these off has arrived.

Posted in your thread but I'll post here too in case others have run into the same thing I did.
Trying this on my Nexus 5 (Hammerhead D821) and while I can find and edit the file, it looks like the line pertaining to presidential alerts is missing. Should I edit it in and set it to false?
Also, when I rebooted and checked the Emergency Alerts config in the Settings app, the boxes were still checked/active. I saw in another thread that the phone has to be set to airplane mode and a backup file deleted - is that what I'm missing here?
Thanks.
For non-rooted phones could a back up and restore with a changed settings file work? There was one from around here somewhere to enable YouTube dark theme in the months the app supported it, but Google hadn't decided to let you enable it.

After getting disturbed in my sleep for two nights I started to search for a solution to get rid of that annoying notification sounds.
JB seem to have an option to suppress notifications for each app, but for ICS that does not seem to be possible.
I was forced to make up a solution myself, so I started to locate the notification sound and was able to find them in /mnt/asec/com.ea.game.simpsons4_row-1/pkg.apk
All which has to be done now to sleep easy, is to remove the .mp3 files from the apk. To do that you need root access:
Code:
# mount |grep simpson
This will output something like:
Code:
/dev/block/dm-22 /mnt/asec/com.ea.game.simpsons4_row-1 vfat ro.dirsync,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,fmask=0222,dmask=0222,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
The relevant part is "/dev/block/dm-22 /mnt/asec/com.ea.game.simpsons4_row-1" take note of that or keep it in the shell history for reference.
Now do (while using the path and device information you obtained above):
Code:
umount /mnt/asec/com.ea.game.simpsons4_row-1
mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/block/dm-22 /mnt/asec/com.ea.game.simpsons4_row-1
Now you have read/write mounted the folder of the game for further tinkering with the apk.
If you cannot unmount and get a message like:
Code:
failed: Device or resource busy
Head to Settings / Apps and force the game to stop. Now repeat the unmounting and it should work.
The next step is to copy the file pkg.apk to a destination of you choice (e.g. /mnt/sdcard/).
Open the file as zip with Total Commander or any other program able to zip/unzip apks.
Now navigate inside the archive to the folder "res/raw" (Total Commander will show in the location bar "/mnt/sdcard/pkg.apk/res/raw")
You should now see a lot of mp3 files.
If you are as much a Homer fan than I am you should extract those files and hear them before you delete them all. My favorite: "Are you cheating on me with another game"
Ok back to the subject:
Select all mp3 files in this folder (pkg.apk/res/raw) and delete them.
Now you can copy the file pkg.apk back to the game folder, overwriting the original one.
You will still get the game notifications, but they are silent.
I expect that this procedure has to be repeated after an update of the game.
Enjoy!
Nevermind...I did it my self. I found them in a TitaniumBackup i had on my phone

Where can I edit this in JB?
[EDIT]
Lol, I found it. In App-Info you can uncheck Show Notification.[/EDIT]
For what it's worth, I managed to do this in JB just by copying the .apk from the /data/app/) directory to the SD card, editing it with Total Commander, and re-installing it.
Here's my instructions (thanks to S-I-M-O-N above for the idea!). I put them on the EA site (and mirrored it here) in case it doesn't stick on EAs site.
NOTE: This is not for the types that don't mind risking losing their game/messing up your phone. It worked for me, but try it at your own risk. This also requires some technical knowledge, if you don't understand any of this, DON'T TRY IT!
This works in Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) and version 4.1.3 of the Tapped Out app. This may break in future versions *if* the .apk is updated (although most updates are done within the app, so it doesn't affect the .apk). And I suppose the developers could go out of their way to make sure this actually breaks the game, but I would think their time would be better spent putting in the option to turn the noise off.
This will require root access, there is no way to do this without it. Period.
First, find your Tapped Out .apk flie (it should be in your /data/app folder, called something like com.ea.gam.simpsons*), and copy it out to your SD card (DON'T uninstall it, just copy/paste). Grab your favorite .apk extraction/editor app (I use Total Commander), and go into your copy on the sd card. You need to delete all the files in the res/raw directory (these are the notification sounds). Once your done, install the modified .apk file. It will overwrite the copy there, but save all your settings (including your name).
I would turn off automatic updates (from the My Apps section of the Market/Play Store) so a new version doesn't sneak sounds back in. You'll know when you have to re-do this for a new version.
I'm tried to change the notification sound using the GaidinBDJ's method, but instead of delete the mp3, I replaced it with different MP3 files, unfortunately the result is that the notification are silent... Is possible to change the notification sound?
P.S.: Sorry for my poor english...

i might be mistaken and have misread, but you know you can change the notification sound volume of the game to Zero from inside the app itself? no need for modding/tweaking or whatever. i did this when i first got the game & just verified that it still works.
open the game > tap the saw/hammer icon in the bottom right of the screen > in the new dialogue box, tap the small "i" to the right of the video camera icon > check "push notifications OFF".
if this isn't what this thread addresses, i apologize.

My phone is running androind 4.3 but it's not rooted. (to noob to do it) Can i reach the files without rooting my phone?
You can achieve this without root.
1. Get Apk Extractor and Total Commander from the Play Store.
2. Extract the apk file of the Simpsons game to your sdcard.
3. Open as zip the apk file with Total Commander.
4. Navigate to res/raw

Thanks a lot man.. Very helpfull! The wonders of Android.
But, can i get the sounds .mp3 besides the notification ones? The ones that belong to each caracther?
For example the "D'oh" sound on Homer.
Where is it stored? I looked it up in the other folders but couldn't find it..
Can you help me out once more?
Thanks in advance!
I'm clueless there too.

Just installed CleanROM version 6 r2, and the modem and rpm zips on my SCH-I535. Things are good, except that I have no selectable ringtones. I went into "Sound" -> "Device Ringtone" and I have the choice of either ES File Explorer or Media Storage, no list of ringtones. So when that happened, I brought up ES File Explorer and found that the "Ringtones" and "Notifications" folders at the top level of "Home" were empty. So I went into /System/Media/Audio/Ringtones and copied the ringtone files to the top level home Ringtones folders. Same for Notifications, copied from Notification folder under /System/Media/Audio to the top level home Notifications folder.
So now I'm guessing that they should be there for use by the phone. However, I still get only the choice of ES File Explorer or Media Storage when I tap on "Device Ringtone" or "Default Notifications" in Settings, no list of ringtones. I've tried the following to get the OS to see these ringtones and notification sounds:
1. Reboot.
2. Pull battery and put it back.
3. Factory reset (which I was sure would do it).
Even after all of the above, the phone still doesn't show the list of ringtones, it only gives me a choice of ES File Explorer or Media Storage.
Is there something that I can do about this, or something that I should do with ES File Explorer to make this connection for the phone? Or did I put the ringtone files in the wrong place for the phone to use?
I'm posting this here because I can't post over in the CleanROM section. Other than this one issue, I've been able to get everything else going and am liking the simplicity of CleanROM.
Thanks very much.
The stock ringtones that came with the ROM will be found if you select Media Storage. The ES will give you access and ability to choose them if you have custom ringtones stored in a folder elsewhere on internal memory or external card.

Doh! Perfect, thanks very much. I didn't realize that was just selecting the way to get to the ringtone list, since I hadn't seen that choice before. Now there's two of each ringtone, since the place I copied them to is apparently where one would put one's own "extra" ringtones. So they are appearing once from each place *smile* (the Ringtones and Notifications folders in the ES FIle Explorer "Home" directory). I'll just remove them from where I copied them to, and all will be good *smile*.
I had to do the CleanROM flash twice, the first time I couldn't use "Phone Info" to change the radios, and things looked funny in that area. Second time everything seems cool, can use Phone Info app and all.
Thanks.
By the way I was not able to find my custom ring tones in oog format with android loop using the media browser. I had to find them in the es file explorer and apply through there. So when you get around to custom tones keep that in mind. It works fine now just had to access through a file explorer instead of standard ring tones menu.

Anyone know of a simple way to stop the gallery from Showing all folders? I've got stuff on my SD card that I don't feel is appropriate for my young children to see (primarily "R" rated movies) & my 4 y/o daughter loves to "look @ pictures, daddy" when we're in the car.
Any way to keep the folder containing these files from being shown in the gallery? Can/should I uninstall the gallery app & use a substitute?
I heard a while back that you can I insert a text file like ".nomedia" but have no idea how to do that.
Any suggestions / ideas (that don't include "remove that crap" or "control your kids!" LÖL) are appreciated. If the suggestion is a .nomedia file or some such, detailed instructions would also be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
"You live & you learn. Or you don't live long..." - LL
An easy way to add the .nomedia file is to download the free version of Super Manager from the Play Store. (or paid if you decide you like it) Once you have it open it and go to the file manager. Open up the folder you want hidden so that you can see its contents. At the bottom of the app there is a bar with different buttons. One of them looks like the Windows Media Player icon with a check mark and an X on it and says media below it. Tapping that icon will add/remove a .nomedia file in the open folder.
May not be the most simplistic way but I always had trouble finding something that would let me create just a standard file type I could turn in to the .nomedia file. All most file manager apps let you create is a folder which wont work.
Thanks for the advice! Embarrassing as this is, I "cheated" & looked for an answer on Google @ the same time I posted the question.
Turns out the easiest way for me was to change the name of the folder from "Interesting" to ".Interesting"
Folder disappeared and is no longer assessable through the gallery.
Sorry for the wasted time but I appreciate the answer. Next time, I'll be a little less lazy & a little more aware of the power of the Goog....

I use an app called Vaulty (free version) or Stocks (paid version of Vaulty). It works well for hiding media from prying eyes. Entering anything other than the correct password on the program's opening page just performs a stock market lookup, so as far as anyone else is concerned, it's just another stock market app.
