Though I have used TB many times to restore my apps after flashing a new ROM I haver never worried about the App Data. That was because back then I had very little data to be concerned about.
Well now I would like to move my apps and the app data to a new phone and I decided to ask someone with more experience for some clarification.
In TB Pro, touch Menu key, then Batch.
Choices are "Backup all user apps", "Backup all system data", or "Backup all user apps + system data".
Perhaps I am just reading this incorrectly, but I only want to backup my apps and the data associated with the apps (game progress, etc.). I don't think that I want to backup any system data since I am moving to a new phone..
Does the "Backup all user apps" selection include the data from the apps?
Also, I have read about using TB to create a zip file with my apps and app data. Is this a better idea, and if so how is it done?
Sorry for all the questions. As you can see I have only used TB sparingly and it has been a while, so I would appreciate some more expert assistance,

Don't know if you got any help but I use my root backup it will back up data call logs messages calender and much more to your sd card for easy transfer. Don't know if this will help but I found it's easier to use than TB I have both my root backup and TB on my phone and I never use TB anymore. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

I have Titanium Backup Pro, and am getting ready to flash the Cognition ROM (I have a Samsung Captivate). I have in many places seen people recommend to only backup and then restore user apps and app data when switching from one ROM to another (or from stock to a ROM). However, when I look in the batch list (I have version 3.6.7 of TB) there is an option for user apps, system data, or user apps and system data but no option for user apps and app data. Is app data included in the batch file for apps?
Also, a wiki I read (can't post the link, too junior) claims that you can restore apps without restrictions across ROMS, which to me means that restoring system data shouldn't be a problem.
Essentially, I am worried that if I only back up user apps using the batch file, when I restore, the apps will be there, but their data (like my prized angry birds progress, heaven forbid I lose it) won't be. Is that the case or does the user apps backup include that kind of stuff?
Also, it seems like system data includes things like SMS history. Should I go through and backup specific parts of the system data like texts and contacts and restore those but just not use the batch file?

I've always backed up user apps and data and system data. The trick is to uncheck anything you're not sure of when you go to restore.
The only system data I restore is my wifi access points. You should have your angry birds progress, but I've never had my sms restore.
Make a nandroid before you restore so that you can go back if it starts acting wonky on you.

it automatically backs up the app and the data
you can restore apps accross roms but your asking for trouble if you try and restore data.
there should be an option in the batch to "restore missing apps with data" when you click "run" it will pop up with all the apps and at the top it will have a radio button to select app, app + data, or...um something else perhaps just data? (sorry flashing something else on my phone right now)
always select just app when flashing a different rom, else you might end up with a soft brick or atleast some FC.

Though my thread title may be a little vague and might supposedly be better asked on google or android per se, just patiently read along as I try to explain my dilemma in more detail.
For ICS users, we all know the convenience of the "backup & restore" feature. Everything from wifi passwords, contacts, and installed apps will be magically restored when you install a new firmware on your phone with a full data wipe. And for us flash junkies, that indeed is really convenient.
But even though I have come to love such feature, I've noticed a few quirks as I was using it over time. The backup manifest or shall I say, the list of backed up data gets cluttered as you continue to backup data over time. This leading to a point where my backup data is now so messed up, whenever it auto restores once again, I see previously uninstalled apps back again and duplicate contact entries. So messed up, that I've decided to stop using this much loved feature and just manually backup my contacts, and re-install apps.
So, I am looking for some solution that I might be somehow able to manually edit that current backed up list (over at google or wherever it's stored), and update which will be restored if ever I flash my phone again. Or wipe that list clean and overwrite it with my current phone state.
Sorry for the long post but I've done my googling and forum searching beforehand only to no avail.
You can forgo that feature entirely and use titanium backup instead, for backing up your personal app data...
Titanium acts a little twitchy when restoring system apps and data across roms with different bases...
Your best bet would be to backup your downloaded apps with titanium, backup contacts and msgs (and call logs) from other market apps (I use go backup)...
For bluetooth and wifi access points, I haven't found anything that is truly cross compatible among roms...so better of you just write it down somewhere and refer that later...

I'm fairly new to Ti and have a question. I'd like to backup my downloaded apps and user data like text messages and email settings. I don't need much more than that. I saw a tutorial that said to backup apps, user and system data. That doesn't seem right if I'm using a custom ROM.
What do you guys recommend?

With titanium backup, you can backup all your apps and the data and then when you go to a different rom or newer build tell it to rebackup only app s that have been updated or contain new data. Text messages can be backed up in it as well and its super simple to backup and restore them (depending on how many messages you, more messages longer it takes). As far as email settings ive never done that so i can't comment on that part.
The reason for this is that if you flash a new rom and something goes wrong you can still have that data to just simply restore. The reason i use titanium backup is because its a thousand times faster to restore all your apps with that then redownload them all.
Word of advise, NEVER restore system data, that could potentially cause issues in the future, restoring apps and app data for games and such should be fine though
But as far as nightlies go, a full wipe shouldn't be required everytime a new one comes out, unless stated otherwise, or for myself i don't like to flash more than 3 or 4 nightlies on top of eachother so by the 4th or 5th one i do a fresh install, in which i backup apps and messages and restore them.

Yes, definitely! Thank you. I'm seeing the option to backup all user apps, all system data, a combo of both, and several other scenarios. Last time I backed up just user apps and when I restored them I lost all my text messages. Is there a setting I need to select?

i can't remember if you need the pro version or not but for text messages and call logs, when you first enter the app hit the menu button and it should be under "backup data to xml" you'll click that and then choose what data you want to backup. From there you can either backup to your sd card, or i believe dropbox/google drive, but i always put it on the sdcard since its not a very big file

nonono, there's an easier way to do what he wants.
@ OP, choose the option to backup all user apps... run it... there's one backup. Then, go into backup system apps, de-select all, then scroll through and find Call Log and Messages and check those... run the backup of those two items. Then you'll have all your user apps + texts and call logs.
Now you can do a factory wipe, run TiBu and restore ALL backups that you have (you only have user apps and the two items from system) and you will have everything except various system settings back as they were.
You can use filters to make it even easier. Make a new filter, only add the apps you want backed up (downloaded apps and the call log). Then all you have to do is backup and restore one list.
You can get fancy with it too. I have 3 filters. One for user apps I won't need to restore data to, one for use apps I want to be able to restore data to, and one for bloat that always gets bulk uninstalled immediately (I also use this list to test if system apps are removable by backing them up, uninstalling them, then if no problems arise I delete the back up). When ever I do a full wipe I just restore the first list (apps only), restore the second list (apps + data), and bulk uninstall everything on the third list. Takes all of 5 minutes and it's like I never wiped at all.
That said, I just dirty flash nightlies. Until I have a problem, there's no reason to do a full wipe.

Oh Yeh, I forgot about the filters, I haven't messed with them much at all.
Go backup is also quite good as an alternative. Less customization but very simple to use

On my TMobile G2x I backed up all my downloaded apps (21 of them). The backup was successful. But in the Batch>Restore I see nowhere where there are 21 apps to restore.. Were the heck does Titanium Backup back these up to? I want them together so I can restore all at once if I do a Factory Data Reset.

It normally backs things up to a folder in your sd card called "titaniumbackup".... I think..

Internal SD Card?
I do see a folder called titaniumbackup.
I'm want to remove them and back up my 20 downloaded apps.

U can't restore from its location (they have it backed up as some files that can be read by titanium backup only)
Just install titanium backup from play store after you do the data reset. Then go to the app and restore
Ps - the folder must be on external SD card. As wiping data is gonna wipe internal memory too and u ll lose the backup.
Titaniumbackup folder in internal sd folder or you choose it from settings. You cant restore them manually because as somebody said above they are archived in someway only titanium backup reads them.
I'm not trying to restore them manually.
My goal is to be able to go into Titanium and be able to see my backed up downloaded apps, and only my backed up downloaded apps. I did back them up, there are 20 of them. But, when I go into Batch>Restore I see no area where there are only 20 apps. When I tap run I'm faced with all the other system apps, that I backed up, and I need to uncheck the ones I don't want to.
I find this aspect of Titanium Backup very confusing.
It's like trying to shoot pool with a rope.

You need to set filter on Backup/Restore tab to show only User applications. Tap on "Click to edit filters" label.
Have no idea what's wrong with Titanium, now. When I go into Batch it showing 0 for every category. Seems Titanium has no idea I have any apps?? If I filter for all I get the list of my apps but there's a triangle icon with an exclamation on it on every app, system and user.
I don't get it.
Triangle means that there are no backups yet for selected apps
Something was wrong with Titanium Backup.
I uninstalled it and reinstalled it now it's and no it's finding the backups that I had already made. Including my 21 downloaded apps that I backed up. They show in the restore, now, in the User aps.

Remember you will always have them in google play store (my apps section) assuming they were downloaded from google play store.
I always/frequently send my backups to cloud storage.. for any unforeseen circumstances I lose my apps, then I can at anytime grab them from my cloud..

I spoke too soon.
I did a factory data reset and installed Titanium Backup. Can't find any of my backups I did just prior to don't the reset.
Is there any other backup out there that works???

This is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm trying to restore these apps without having to depend upon Google or Cloud. I have turned off syncing with Google. I guess I'm a bit paranoid.
Any way. I uninstalled and reinstalled Titanium Backup and got my apps restored. Problem is it restored some apps I no longer use but must have backed them up in the past.
Will these User backups be in the TitaniumBackup folder? If so, and I delete all the backups there and do another users app backup this eill remove the apps I don't I\use and hence they wont be restored??

I still don't get it!
In the Backup section of Batch... one item is "Backup all user apps" (17 user apps)
I then ran it successfully.
Now, shouldn't there be an item in the Restore section "Restore all user apps" with a total of 17 apps??
There is none.
Now, I realize I'm new to this stuff but Can anyone suggest another backup app. 'cause I believe Titanium Backup sucks.
And apparently one here has any solutions.
You're correct in stating that user apps should also show in the restore section..
In the main overview screen do all user apps show.? And do they have yellow icon next to them showing they have been backed up..
If you have pro version with unlock key, email dev/support with your problem..
To be honest with you and most xda users will agree that TB is one there most stable, reliable & one of the most needed root app..
Try using (ROM Toolbox pro/free) as good as if not better, you'll love the user interface ..

All my user apps show up. 2 of them have a yellow smiley face next to them. All the other have green and yellow icon with what I believe to be a face. I have backed up all my user apps at least twice today hoping to see these in the restore area. I checked again and now they're there! The user apps are now showing up ion the Restore. Why they weren't there all day and all of a sudden pop up I don't know. It's not that I needed a reboot 'cause I did that right after backing up.
Maybe I should scan my phone for a virus.
I'm sorry 'bout putting the product down, it's just very frustrating. It's not the product it's me. Some of this stuff is over my head.

I did, however find a couple of apps that seem pretty good:
App Backup and Restore
App Quarantine to freeze apps.
I have no desire to flash a new rom (if that' the proper term)
I simply want it easy to backup and restore my user apps and the freeze some apps I don't use.
Freezing can be done very easily with TB..
But once you get to good with this app, trust me it will be yet most valuable need app for you

I am kinda having this problem
I have a similiar problem. But with mine is I changed the ext back up folder to a specific one, but for whatever reason titanium saves back ups to the default folder where i have other back ups.
but when i look at my apps itll say 0 bakups because the new folder i chose is empty. even though it saved them in the old folder for whatever reason.
When i switch it back to the default folder then itll recognize that i have the new backups. even though i didnt tell it to save them there.
This is what I wanted to know:
Internal storage\storage\emulated\legacy\TitaniumBackup
Is where app backups are saved.

I know titanium backup was always the best in the past but not sure if the last few years found better options for my S6 Verizon or if phones have better built-in backups. I think TB required root but i dont have that on my stupid S6 verizon. Otherwise, what other options do i have?
A guide would be appreciated, as I am afossil in the XDA world now!

Simple one I would suggest is Samsung SmartSwitch. It pretty much backsup everything.
But for example. if you have any game data stored on your device. It doesnt backup. and if it doesn't backup WhastApp chat back up data as well.
I would suggest a twrp/cwm backup is the best.
Orelse use a USB OTG pendrive to simply copy paste all the files and folders required.But you will need to restore everything
And Samsung Cloud is the best option for backup and restore as of now. For cloud services upto 15 GB after that you will have to pay for the services
