[Q] noob note 10.1 screen mirroring question - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI
I recently got a galaxy note 10.1 wifi model and wanted to mirror the screen on my lg smart tv. I understand that both these devices are capable of mirroring but they don't seem to play nice together I contacted samsung customer support and they said look for a 3rd party app that might do it.
I have been doing exactly that since but all i can seem to find are apps that allow file sharing not live mirroring of the note 10.1's screen onto the tv. I understand that samsung have some sort of dongle that might allow it to work but i would prefer not to fork out another $100 for something that seems like it should just work without it. I would prefer to simply use an app that would allow me to connect it via the wifi. Does anyone know of such an app?
Thanks

Allshare Cast dongle or hub is the only way to mirror afaik. I think some newer Samsung tv's might have Allshare built in but not sure about other brands.

Dongle:
samsung.com/se/consumer/mobil/mobil/mobiltillbehor/EAD-T10EDEGSTD?subsubtype=multimedia-and-general

Damn was hoping not to have to buy one of those. I thought with Alshare, dlna and WiFi direct a least one option would just do it. The tv has all those options except allshare it has LG smartshare I believe instead.
Is the Samsung dongle the only one that will work Belkin and HTC make one as well don't they?

I got samsung smart tv with all share cast too, and looking same as you for a way to mirror my screen to it through wifi... its not possible only images and video no screen mirror.
So I guess the the dongle is a must....

I thought that should work due to the tv and the tablet being the same brand and both having allshare cast. My problem is that my tv is an lg tv and the tablet is samsung

Unfortunately Sammy TVs right now do have ONLY AllShare PLAY not AllShare CAST !
Hope AllShare CAST will be added with the Smart Evolution Kit for Sammy TV by March 2013 though.
Right now no mirroring w/o Dongle ..........

One more question about screen mirroring and the need for allshare cast dongle. What exactly does the dongle do that can, t be done with an app? As I understand it with what little knowledge I have is that allshare is based on miracast and so is the dongle, LG's smartshare is based on the same they just both have their own skins overlaid onto miscast technology so you have to go out and spend more money on their hardware to make everything work? What I am wondering is why can't a general app be made that just does the screen mirroring o onto tv's if Both devices are miracast capable, dlna capable and wifidirect capable surely one of these options should allow screen mirroring on a tv without the need for a dongle That costs another $100 or so to purchase on top of the tablet just to get this function. I hope this all makes sense, if someone could explain all this so the dummies like me could understand it that would be awesome. Oh and there seems to be many options for screen mirroring with your pc why is this different?
Thanks

The only way i know of, if you have a capable android phone that you already have hdmi connection to tv, is to use mirrorop sender/reciver app, two apps, one on the note one on the phone, allows you to mirror one android to another vice versa. Ive not managed to get a working mhl/hdmi for my s3, so i dont know if there is a limitation to then hook up the phone via hdmi to tv, wouldnt mind a confirmation on that one my self
Pro
Ive mirrored my note to my s3, anything static it does ok, pics, browsr, pdf, slow/static games
5 minute trial, restart app to reset
Cons
Doesnt transmit sound [i guess the dongle trumps that]
Fast paced games have lag, specifically game controls
Picture quality options at the sake of speed
5 minute trial, restart app to reset
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.awindinc.sphone2tv&hl=en
Ive heard of raspber pi project on this, but last time i checked it was for a nexus line and you needed custom firmware

Yeah I looked into Mirrorop but seen as I only want to mirror my galaxy note 10.1 onto a tv it's of no use to me. Funny thing is, is that the LG smart tv I have used to come with a mirror op receiver app p re installed but for some reason it was removed from the model in all countries except China. Sounds like money grabbing on LG's part if you ask me.

One suggestion if you decide to grab the Sammy dongle: register your note on the Samsung web page and you'll get a $50 coupon for the Samsung store. That's how I got mine. Cutting the price in half makes it a little easier to swallow and it does work well certainly glad I got mine.

That sounds alright just one thing is that valid for Australian customers? Also does anyone no which Aussie stores stock them? I went onto Samsung's au website and it seems to be greyed out so I don't no were they are stocked .
online I guess any one know who has the best price?

I've a further related noob question. I have owned my Note 10.1 for 4 days now and have found it great, but I would love to be able to mirror it's display. I actually want to project it (I'm a teacher), but have found a workaround with an iPad where I mirror the iPad to my laptop and display the laptop as normal. Is anything like this possible with the Note?

Hi, I am a teacher as well and am using the Note 10.1 in my classrooms.
I use the Allshare Cast dongle, connected to a HDMI-VGA converter, to the projector. Don't use the converters that don't have a separate power supply; the display will cut in and out because the dongle cannot supply enough current.
Alternatively, you can try using the Netgear push2tv device. The recent beta update enables compatibility with Allshare devices.
If you have rooted your Note 10.1, you need to triangle away to clear the flash counter.

Thanks for your reply. Do you happen to know if there are more than model of Allshare Cast? Prices seem very variable - Amazon go from £30 to £107! I haven't rooted my Note - I'm not really sure what the benefit is - although I seem to have read that it may allow me to access my email through the school proxy, which I can't do at the moment. Can you recommend a HDMI-VGA converter that works?

Do you guys get sound when you conect using the mirror cast not using the dongle I get picture and no sound

I bought new Samsung TV series 6, and it have bulid in Screen Mirroring but in menu options on my Note 10'1 from 2012 i dont have this options.
There is some one hack or addons to my tablet to get this options?

[App] Samsung TV remote

Hey all.
Not sure if anyone has noticed, but it (AFAIK) hasn't been mentioned, but there is an app on Samsung Apps that acts as a remote for a Samsung TV. I haven't tested it because I don't have a Samsung TV, but some people might find it useful.
for me, its at the bottom of the app list and not at the top like new releases usually are.
Enjoy

I saw that, but my Sammy isn't a 9 series
Can't find it in samsung apps :/ Only have two apps there.
Been using the remote app on my galaxy s a couple of weeks now, loving it!
I don't have it on my Tab, and I have a 50" Samsung plasma TV. So can someone please post the APK so we can install and try it?
Download it from the Samsung Apps. It work well with my 6740 TV.

How have you got it working on a Series 6 TV?
According to the instructions the App will only work on TV's having [email protected] and published after 2010.
This app is avaible on Samsung app French

Now I'm really confused..... The Series 6 was released in 2008 which is nowhere near the 2010 date Samsung are saying.
EDITED:
I have checked my Series 8 TV and although I have [email protected] it does not list a Wireless Option which for the Remote is mandatory.
My TV is connected via LAN to my Router/Modem.
Are you saying you have a Wireless Dongle attached at the back of the TV?
They've also added a Samsung Easyprint for wireless printing from the Tab via wifi (I believe)
Should be another useful tool for people with Samsung printers.

I have the same TV and setup. To turn on the Wireless Remote option on your TV Menu>Plug N Play>Wireless Remote Control.
That being said, the remote app does not work for me on my UN55C8000. I'm guessing because Samsung wants us to buy their optional wifi remote instead.
Also, the app is available in the Android Market. There are actually 2 versions, one for mobile phones and one specific for the Tab.
Seems to be available in the regular market now.
It's work for my UN46C7000. I don't see why it's don't work on the C8000! Once I shoot up the App, I can see my TV listed.
It's control via WIFI, too bad it'll not control the vol. of my Samsung Sound bar. I think i'll stick with my Harmony One.
Ok, finally got this app working on my C8000. Turns out it was a problem with my home network setup. I use Slinglink to get wired ethernet to my TV components. Slinglink is an ethernet over powerline solution. I grabbed an extra long cat5 cable and connected the TV directly to the router and everything now works. Odd thing is, all the other network and internet functions worked fine over the Slinglink. Im guessing Slinglink creates some sort of network bridge that prevents the two devices from seeing each other.

Is the HTC Hero (rooted 2.2) Compatible?
Hi,
Does anyone know why the market is telling me that my HTC Hero running 2.2 is not supported?
I have a Samsung UE40C6700 TV and would love to get my hands on this app.
Thanks

NO HDMI for the GT-P3113 tab 2 7.0 (returning)

I am seriously considering that the tab 2 7.0 needs to be returned for lack of HDMI support. I have called Samsung three times concerning HDMI or TV out support, they told me it is coming. But the tab 2 10.1 now has HDMI support, so I am thinking that 7.0 support might never materialize.
Has anyone else decided to return thier 7.0 for lack of HDMI support? Has anyone tried and been successful? I bought mine from Amazon the first week.
I dont understand why people buy these devices and start crying about hdmi support, honestly who gives a crap?
In reality how many times will you exactly use the feature? Netflix? Xfinity? Because last i seen xbox 360 has the apps.
Unless you doing powerpoint presentations then its a pointless feature. A tablet is a "portable device" meaning its meant for you to carry it around for portable entertainment, i highly doubt you gonna carry a hdmi cable around and plug it into every tv you see.....

Don't own an Xbox and do not subscribe to Netflix. I do have a lot of movies that are watched on my tab and when visiting friends they sometimes want to share a movie viewing together, when they are not pretending to be a soldier or a badman of course. There are times when stuck in a hotel room before a regional meeting and I need to review a presentation that bigger would be better. But the main reason I would consider returning the tab is because it was sold with HDMI support.
Imagine if your game would not allow you to get the BIG gun you spents weeks trying to earn.
Okay, just kidding a little.
Didn't know we were supposed to have HDMI support. Any idea how they added the support to the 10.1" model?
I had a microHDMI spot on my Droid Charge and never used it and didn't know anyone that used it more than one or two times just to see if it worked. IMO, it's more of a gimmick than anything else. I would think that using the AllShare app that comes with the tablet would be easier to use than playing around with HDMI cables.
Well if you knew you needed hdmi then you should of gotten one that has support for it. But instead you whine about not having it. If you needed it that bad there are plenty other tablets. But instead you opted to get the cheapest tablet on the market and hoped to get support for it later. Its stupid to start a thread about an item you returning anyway. Just my opinion.
And to add hdmi is not the only way to share a movie at a friends house, and most hotels still have not upgraded there tube tvs so its still pointless.

Truly dude !!! i don't think anybody is whinning, The first manual clearly stated that the tab2 7.0 supported this feature, nobody made this crap up!!! Samsung did, so anybody that purchased the TAB2 with this feature in mind is screwed!!! now what? Return it, call Samsung and complain!!! Why does a customer have to go through this crap...seriously. So please don't give an opinion if you don't know the facts!!!
Thanks,
I would have returned this too. I am looking for a nice cheap tab with hdmi out to play stuff on my big screen tv. Did samsung release the fix
get an android set top box. The cost of the cable will be half of those boxes anyway

Well, this doesn't help the OP at all. Who are you to question how people use their devices? A tablet is a multimedia device that should have video output, and most of us do give a crap about it. That's why some of us purchased the first Galaxy Tab 7 CDMA/GSM. So what if the stupid xbox has apps?... a $60 DVD player has apps. They aren't portable. And, yes, we do carry HDMI cables around- like when we travel and connect the device to a hotel TV. But, I guess if you stay in your room all day playing video games, you don't really travel.

Another useless response. Don't get me wrong- I have a Logtitech Revue and love the Google TV. But, again, it isn't portable.
The lack of video output on the newer tablets is what keeps me from buying any of them. I still stick with my old SPH-P100 for it's features that the new ones don't have. I honestly don't see how these companies decide that HDMI out- either directly or indirectly- is worth the "savings". I personally would pay the extra $10 it takes to add it to the tablet. Hell, my Rezound is HDMI-out capable. Why can't a tablet have the same feature? Especially a 7" tablet, which is seriously too small for more than one person to watch anything. Sometimes you just need to show stuff on the big screen.
Android is all about versatility- and cutting back on the hardware is just tying the OS's hands. The companies should let the consumers decide which features to use instead of forcing them to accept the limited ones they provide. There has to be a way to get an all-around great mid-size tablet with every useful feature for under $250.
So, in answer to the OP- no, the new tablet doesn't appear at all to have any video output. I don't even think the old docks work with the new tablets. Otherwise, I would suggest rooting and flashing a different ROM that would support video out using the old multimedia dock. I also see that there is nothing in the tablet's specs mentioning any type of video output... so if it did before, shame on Samsung for false advertising.
It is possible for Samsung to add video output with a firmware update and a hardware adapter... the question is, will they?
I only interested when using the Gtab2 as presentation device (using Wifi to laptop, and then laptop to projector)
There's no need for HDMI anyway, the cable is expensive & too short
ITs' pretty clear from Samsung's specs on the G Tab 2 .7 that it does not have the hardware for HDMI. If you had bothered to read any of the reviews you would have seen they dropped that hardware as a way to cut the cost. You can't fix it if it don't exist in the device.

But... but, the original manual said it DID had the support for HDMI.
When I bought my US GT-P3113 it was advertised as having HDMI by every website that had a pre-released review posted. I was not satisfied by the third party confirmation for HDMI support. So I placed calls to Samsung support asking for a PDF user guide or confirmation that the tab supported HDMI. They confirmed that it would support HDMI but that the online user guide was not available for download.
I bought my tab from Amazon for $249.00 full retail the first week that it was released. The manual that was enclosed with the tab did verify that HDMI was supported. I asked people on this forum to confirm that it worked with thier HDTV adapter. They answered and the answer was "it does not work". I called Samsung and they told me that a new adapter was on the way and that my tab would support HDMI soon.
I waited a few months and then it became apparent that HDMI would never be supported. I called Amazon for a refund and at first they refused until a supervisor was engaged and they approved a fulll refund instantly.
After not having my tab for a week I stopped by MicroCenter in my area and they had the US GT-P3113 for $199.00. I bought it from them and it had the updated manual which does not state support for HDMI (Build date 06/2012), I am happy with my tab and use DNLA with my Samsung LED TV, but I would still like HDMI support.
Well I wasn't around for pre-release hype, but as it stands now, the P3113 has no hardware inside to support this function. The P6200 and P6210 (Gtab 7 Plus) both have hardware and do support the function. Bottom line is you cannot make software support hardware that doesn't exist.

No I am from India and even the Tata Sky STB does not work it is from pace and I did get a reply from Peel CC and it was that the software is only available in US currently and will launch ii in other countries shortly
The peel software seems like a nice attempt to bring a remote control to our device, but it lacks on support and devices. Not even satellite receivers are supported.
I wish Logitech would come with an Harmony-like app.
Works just fine with my sony 47" lcd, my at&t uverse dvr, and an old sanyo tube tv... the ui is kinda funky, but it works... controls the volume, channels, etc just fine...

Really? I was under the impression that they had finally started to do some work on the Canadian boxes. Their help forum seems next to dead. And a Logitech app would be great! But honestly I'll settle for a lirc port that has all the buttons for my remote. The guide's a nice feature but it's like basic functionality.
Works on my Panasonic TV (at least On/Off and Source changing)
the Denon Audio On/Off works but nothing else
and Humax isn't supportet at all!
Peel is rubbish here in the UK, it controls my Samsung D8000 by changing channel and volume and thats it. We get no tv guide and other features..
Peel works great with my gear. Dish hopper, Mitsubishi dip tv, pioneer avr. Everything works as it should.
Well it works great with my LCDs both Samsung and LG but does not detect my STB even though the manufacturer is listed I think it can be fixed by an expert as its all of about the frequencies which need to be correct anyway I think thats one sore point about the tab that all other apps are great except this one may be this was intended mainly for the US markets.
Experts is there any other app which can be used
App works great for me on samsung lcd, denon reciever, and direct tv. Stupid problem/question though. My direct tv remote works fine, but i can't find channel buttons. I can manually input the number and change channel, but just no up/down buttons, or any i can find. Im new to this thing, so I could just be missing it. Thanks.

Working great here as well.I have it connected to Samsung lcd n model from 2010 vizio brand new led model and it finds all channels on our Motorola dvr cable box from insight cable company.
The remote controller itself sucks does not operate all features of device. Will test it on my old panansonic DVD player soon
In my opinion it's incomplete but nice

Oh hello there! Very good post. I however do not have a Galaxy Note. I also do not have Google tv. I have a note 10.1. So using the included peel app is a "fun" option. My logitech harmony 900 is about 100x better though.
But please keep up the outstanding posts.
It's not that I bought my note for the remote functionality. But if I bring it with me when I watch tv I would like to take advantage of all it has to offer.
Sent from my GT-N8010 using XDA Premium HD app
I also have a galaxy note 10.1! I still don't see why the heck anyone would use this device as a media remote. I am glad you liked my post, it's good to see that sarcasm is alive and well in the retirement home.
OK so your sitting on the couch surfing drawing on your note.
You wanna change channel on the TV.do you sit down the note find the tv remote.change channel put remote back(most likely under couch cushions where they hide).or click 3 times.
Home key peel remote icon. Then your favorite channel thats showing in your screen..OK then back to where you were doing.
The remote is kewl if you already have it in your hand. If your not on the tab standard remote works well.
One more thing finding something new to watch is great with peel if you have it set up right with your cable provider. It shows what's on and when as well as rather its a rerun right in your face quickly and easly. Put some effort into setting it up right you then might find use for it
Imagine this scenario you have TV, home theatre, Blu ray player, STB and what would be more convinient using one tab to do ur work and also the work of 4 different remotes or use four different remotes, the whole idea is not to replace the remote but to given an option its a value addition and considering that its a good addition the whole concept of the not is it can do almost all you daily task in one device

As long as you are in the US... Anywhere else you have a REALLY limited remote control. I can't even get the guide up to see whats on. I have to scroll through each channel. Painful considering this was a big part of the advertising and it doesn't do what was advertised outside the USA...
Brings to mind the Apple Ipad 3 being advertised here in Oz as 4g capable. That's only true in certain countries... Apple got a smack over that and had to pull the false adverts...

I use Google t.v. my galaxy note phone works great as a remote and controls my pioneer tv , A/V receiver and my Shaw cable box. Why would anybody want a remote the size of a galaxy note 10.1?

I have google tv also- works great. i has issues with the peel app w/o GTV. The remote app with the best options for G TV is Able remote. the Gtv remote app is very limited. I know this is not on topic....sorry.
Also i do agree with Renee that if i am playing on my note 10.1 and want to change the channel i just hit switcher-dont bother grabbing the remote-- b/c mym GTV app is always open if i have the note in my hand--, than change the channel. Also can just hit microphone and voice search for anything - or simply say play led zep and bam google music opens on the TV and plays led zep....

Miracast with Samsung BD-F5900 / BD-FM59C bluray players

Hi
I just purchased the Samsung BD-FM59C bluray player from Costco for $120. The player supports AllShare Cast and Miracast.
I tired it out a display version at Costco (they hooked up the display to a tv and let me play with it). I went to the screen mirroring option and it said to connect my "Allshare Cast or Miracast device" and I was able to successfully mirror with my Nexus 4 (CM 10.1 Linaro nightly). Satisfied, I bought it.
I went home and updated the firmware (v1003 to v1007). Now it no longer mentions Miracast on the Screen Mirroring option and my Nexus 4 never connects.
Anyone have experience with mirroring on this model? Any other ROMs work better with Miracast? Also if you are interested in this player for mirroring, maybe hold off on updating the firmware.
Update: Stock rooted T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III does not work either with Allshare Cast. It connects then quickly disconnects without mirroring. So it seems to be a bad update. Or I possibly have a lemon.
Does anyone have this model or the new Panasonic models (BDT230 AND BDT330) with Miracast? I'm looking for a decent bluray player with Miracast, DLNA, and Amazon Instant Video. So far, these players seem to be the only ones that do this at least at a reasonable price

We also just got the Samsung BD-F5900 bluray player. Although I did try to do mirroring with my Galaxy s3 before it self-updated (also from v1003 to v1007). Before the update it mentioned Miracast and after it did not. However, I haven't gotten it to work before or after the firmware update. I am speaking with Samsung now to get it resolved and they told me they would call me back in a day or two.
Can you go back to Costco and see what version they are running in the store? If it is working with the older version, you could reset your device back to the stock device and disable software updates form inside settings. Or, perhaps Costco would work with you on setting up your system mirroring with your phone, in their store?

I've been looking into it more. And contacting Samsung Support, with no resolution so far.
I'm assuming Costco was running v1003, since it was the version mines came out of the box. They just had the blu-ray sitting with the price tag and it wasn't connected to anything. I asked them to plug it into a TV and they did and they grabbed the remote for it. The blu-ray player at the store wasn't ever connected to the internet and I was able to Miracast with my Nexus 4. I would downgrade back to v1003, if I could, but I don't think the player would allow me to even if I could somehow find the firmware file on the internet.
The player at home, I updated immediately to v1007. And it no longer worked with my Nexus 4 (and removed reference to Miracast).
For Allshare Cast device (GS3), it looks like people are having issues with the Allshare Cast Hub dongle (that costs $100) and rooted devices, such as in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089479. Since you could never use the mirroring, I wonder if it's because of rooted / flash counter status?
After more attempts, I was able to use Screen Mirroring with my Nexus 4 on the v1007 firmware. It took many connecting disconnecting some restarting but it finally connected and paired and I was able to start mirroring. Again this is on the CM 10.1 Linaro nightly, so it could be something related to the ROM making it difficult to start mirroring.
Ironically, still no luck mirroring with Allshare Cast on stock rooted Galaxy S III...possibly related to root status.
v1007 is ok?

It looks like it. It took many efforts to get it I tried again after, and it did not connect again smoothly, so it seems tempermental, at least for me. But it all in all, it does work with Miracast on Nexus 4...eventually. There is about 1-2 second delay in the mirroring, so fast-paced gaming is not ideal.

I just got the BDT-330 specifically for the Miracast feature. It does work, however it's not really ready for prime-time. DLNA works pretty well, though but not with the default Windows dlna server in Windows 7. I downloaded Serviio and it works really well.

Today t-mobile pushed an update for the Samsung S3, we now have Android 4.1.2 and allshare cast works as expected. My phone hasn't been rooted, so I've never messed with the flash counter status.
My blu-ray player also has the v1007 firmware. It connected on the first try this afternoon.
I have the same BD-FM59C player with 1008 firmware (before that it had 1007) and it NEVER worked with my stock Nexus 4. Not only that but the player itself (forget about miracast) sucks sucks sucks. I'm taking it back to costco. Sony is by far the best in similar low cost players

It looks like stock may not work on Nexus 4. Not sure if it's related to software or even TV, but I only got it to work CM 10.1 with the HDCP off option enabled. I'm running Paranoid Android on the Nexus 4 and it's doing what my GS3 did where it would connect then disconnect.
I tried fully stock GS3 and it did not work either but Kitzy said it works w latest GS3 update from T-Mobile.
Maybe the common problem with All share Cast and Miracast failing is HDCP related?
Also I did like Sony's player (I had the S590) for usability since it allowed more apps to use keyboard/mouse and had better navigation, but it also had a lot of problems with DLNA. This Samsung has its problems with being too Samsung centric (the remote only works with Samsung TV's and isn't universal!) and horrible navigation but it also has a lot more features. Such as good YouTube app (with YouTube Tv support from mobile), better web browser, miracast (which may or may not work) and better DLNA support. It's even better for DLNA by using bubbleUPNP and screen mirroring also works with Intel WiDi. So I think it's the better bang for the buck right now.

miracast (screen mirroring) and wifi at same time?

as per the title. can you still use yr wifi connection if you're using miracast on the s4? for example, be streaming a movie over wifi from a NAS drive at home from the s4, then onto the tv via a ptv3000 or some other such miracast dongle?
Hi and yes.

Yes our phone has WI-FI during sending image to the smart tv.
I tested that yesterday, i was browsing with my phone and the image was streaming to my Smart Tv without any other accesory using screen miroring in the first TAB of our settings .
cool. Thanks for the info. does yr tv have inbuilt miracast or were you using a dongle like the ptv3000?

Is there a thread where people share experiences on the dongles in the market right now?
The PTV3000 seems to be the only reputable one available but I have read in multiple places that it has HDCP issues where you can't connect it behind an AV receiver. I want to know if there is any other options...
Inbuilt compatibility is nice but I want a dongle that I can carry while traveling...

my ptv3000 and lg bluray player BP730 both work fine for miracast. if having it plugged in behind an av receiver is causing issues then just use a short cable to bring it to the front or top of the device. i have mentioned the same on my video review on youtube a while back. i have reveiewed both the devices i mention.
