So what do you think, was this worth it. I think so.
This is what I weighed when I made my decision to switch: (impulsively maybe)
(1) Storage
Nexus One - 512mb (half taken up by OS), I provided a 16gb MicroSD (needing more, debated a 32GB for the past 4 months)
TB - 8gb, Comes with a 32gb MicroSD
(2) Network >
Nexus One - T-Mobile
TB - Verizon
(3) Monthly Bill >
Tmobile - Went up $10 three months ago to $130month
Verizon - 99.95 month
(4) Network Features and Coverage >
Tmobile - Normally getting EDGE Network, Spotty 3g, No 4G, Voice coverage not really that good either
Verizon - Strong 3G spotty 4G, Best voice coverage hands down of any provider
(5) Customer Service >
T-Mobile - Arab guy practically needed a translator to talk to me (kept asking me to repeat my self because he didn't understand)
Verizon - Cute sounding southern bell answered the phone and took care of my question fast and directly, no putting on hold to ask some one else and definitely didn't need a translator.
(9) Processors
Nexus One - 1ghz Snapdragon
Thunderbolt - 1ghz Scorpion
Pretty much a tie here I think. But from I could see at the Verizon Store and My current N1 using quadrant Thunderbolt (1870) slapped my N1 (1175) and then showed it who daddy was. Sorry N1 lost again.
(10) Phone Size (This was my biggest concern, pun intended)
Nexus One - Attractively big enough for any feature I want (Perfect size for a smart phone IMO)
Thunderbolt - A little on the big side with the screen being nearly .5 inches bigger as well the phone size being about the same width and height wise.
(11) Dev Support
Nexus One will probably devour any phone in the category
Thunderbolt should pick up the pace as it matures
(12) OS (Gingerbread AOSP Vs. Froyo Sense)
Nexus One - Gingerbread AOSP Stock or Tons of different Custom Roms, Google Supported of course (Reason for the N1 Love). Nice, clean and absolutely no BLOAT
Thunderbolt - Froyo with Sense. Honestly I love sense. Coming from and AOSP build and I couldnt be happier. I love the added widgets, the layout of sense is phenomenal, recent apps in the pull down is awesome. It just looks great. TONS OF BLOAT WARE though.
(13) Feature Set
Nexus One - APPS to SD (A must have for this phone), Free WIFI Tethering, Standard type Android settings menus, Trackball notifications (handier than I would have ever thought), Compatible with nearly any app that hits the market, call blocking support via Cyanogen MOD
Thunderbolt - APPS to SD (not even needed), WIFI Tethering with Paid subscription to VZ (downer, but possibly free with ROOT), Settings menus are not standardized with AOSP Android Releases making them a new learning curve
(14) Accessories
Nexus One - Packed Full of what ever you need, but need to find it on Ebay since most places are no longer carrying accessories for the phone.
Thunderbolt - Already a flooded market of accessories (major plus)
(15) Battery Life
Nexus One and Thunderbolt are about the same. N1's never got that great of battery life either. After my battery leveled off on my Thunderbolt, it has been pretty comparable.
So far this is the homework I have done to help with my decision. The monthly cost was not really a deal maker or a breaker for me since I was allready comfortable with it. The fact that T Mobile sold off to ATT is a little disheartening to me and leaves me anxious as to what I can expect from the most notorious of all the major carriers. That is what finally pushed me over the EDGE and in to the LiTE.
Yeah...the AT&T purchase made me switch from T-Mobile too..... but where do you get EDGE,let alone 3G!??!!? I always get GPRS with T-Mobile(Haven't canceled YET,trying a data only/VOIP plan on VZW).
I had a G2 and a Nexus one before coming over to Verizon. The phone is nice and dev is moving along considering the phone has only been out for a week. At least we know there will be a working sense Rom, cm7, and hopefully a miui build. To me theses were the bug three I'm worried about.

Agreed... the notification was sick, but other than that I love the TB.
Regarding the vote... I just switched from the N1 last weekend, and it's already up for sale... http://bit.ly/fucAf9
That's how happy I am with this device!
Ddgarcia: miui is the one im waiting for. And n_i_x from the dinc forums who did all the miui ports has a bolt, so it shouldnt be long

Only time I had called customer service and had someone hard to understand was when it was billing (collections cause I forgot to pay my bill) other than that almost always some chipper sounding girl or some guy sounding extra chill (read stoner)
And sucks you live somewhere with such spotty service, I live in Houston and had good 4G service. I switched cause I started having data freezes and AT&T buying them sold me.
Also what kinda plan did you have costing that much? I had 3 lines and it was only 160/mo.
I'm on flexpay 1400 mins family. It was $120 and without notice went to $130.
I get hsdpa if in Milwaukee. But if I leave to a smaller town I get nothing. Major problem for me when traveling.

I actually just dropped Tmobile for Verizon and the bolt. I did it for both the merger and because I wanted to get in on Verizon's Blistering fast LTE network before they went to tiered data. I wanted a grandfathered Unlimited plan.
Well that and the fact that I couldn't any service at all at my college, and crappy edge at home.
I just jumped from a N1 on ATT to the Tbolt. The only thing I miss is CM7 which we should get on the Tbolt soon enough. I don't miss ATT's spotty coverage. I find the Tbolt to be significantly more snappy than the nexus since I started running the new virus rom. The LTE speed and coverage in the DC area also blows away the N1 on ATT.
If you read consumer reports, Verizon has the best coverage, hands down across the country.
I finally decided to stop defending T-mobile and the spotty coverage. I paid T-mobile 79.99 per month for service and could only use what I paid for when at work.
Now I will pay Verizon 76.00 per month (including insurance). I get less minutes but at least I can use the minutes I have when I need to. Also with the strength of the Verizon LTE coverage in Atlanta, I should be able to make VOIP calls with Sipdroid, and Google Voice, and have people be able to hear me.
I finally decided, why pay for a service I can only use under certain circumstances.....
Switching from T-Mobile today. Going to miss my Nexus one. I have very fast HSPA+ service where I live. (suburb of Boston) The buy out just freaked me out. I own 4 phones, G1, BB9700, MyTouch 4G and the Nexus One and they will all become paper weights. That is why I am pissed off. I paid full price for every phone and you can be sure AT&T will not give me 4 devices to make up for the ones I bought. I figured I would jump on the unlimited data plan while I can and enjoy that blazing speed. I have the Verizon LTE working in my area. I am very excited about my new phone. Going to the local Verizon store in my town and buy me some Thunderbolt action. Then it's back home to root it. I was a die hard T-Mobile customer who enjoyed their Network and their customer service has always been nothing but first class to me. I'm hoping Verizon will be a great experience for me. Thinking about a future with AT&T and their lousy data capped plans doesn't sit well with me. I absolutely loved my Nexus One on T-Mobile. I changed Roms like underwear and will miss that. T-Mobile really let their customers down IMO. It was just a couple of weeks ago when I heard someone from T-Mobile say "T-Mobile USA is NOT for sale".
Yeah when you look at ATT's data plans they cap you at 5gb, that will easily be eaten up by slacker radio, pandora and soon netflix or streaming from your home computer.
Longtime GSM user, both AT&T and T-Mobile. I have a terminal aversion to CDMA but LTE looks intriguing. I use, roughly, between 13-20GB per month. Voice usage is almost nonexistent. I do text frequently.
I've been eyeballing a fellow coworkers Thunderbolt. (I'm also enititled to a 20% discount through work.) My questions:
Are you guys happy with your Thunderbolts? Like the screen? Does the LTE SIM work like GSM, just find another LTE phone pop and go? (I phone hop like mad!) LTE coverage in Ohio is actually pretty good. Your ETF is $350? (Once the AT&T&T mereger is done 12-16 months down the road I may switch back. Any general thoughts to add?
I'm happy to listen to anyone!!
I was a longtime ATT user (and Cingular before that, THOSE were the days) before switching for the TBolt. I enjoy the screen, better than my old Blackberry and since I mainly use texting/email on it instead of video, I actually prefer the screen to a SAMOLED. In theory, LTE SIM switching should work, but there hasn't been another LTE VZW device to test that with (another week and we'll know). And yes, ETF is $350 now, just like ATT.
Out of curiosity, why would you switch back soon down the road? ATT's (even if they acquire T-Mobile) "4G" technology is so far behind LTE that it's laughable. That's why I switched, ATT spent too long dawdling around not really improving their network infrastructure, at least where I live.
I use about 120 to 80 Gb monthly now that this is my only net connection. The best thing about it is the price monthly. I'm paying for a data only plan which is 50 a month unlimited before my 25 percent discount. For texting I use Google voice app and I have GV forwarded to a sipgate #, running SIPdroid on the tbolt to get my calls. Result is unlimited calls text and internet tethering for 37 bucks a month. Ya the phone ain't cheap upfront but it really is like having a cable modem in your pocket. I love it

I just got the T-bolt and I am impressed. Although I have not tasted any 4G yet, it is a very solid phone. The battery life is not great, but that is to be expected of such a device. Getting a bigger battery seems to be the only option. I love the screen and cannot wait to watch movies on it! Waiting for a netflix app

The LTE SIM does not work like GSM just yet. Verizon has it on a white list. They have to approve the device it will be in. They say that they are adding approved devices all the time but not sure which devices have been added. I think they are pushing more for the LTE SIM to be taken out of your phone and you put it in a camcorder, DSLR camera and make the devices shoot live feeds. I had read this on howard forums. I would love for HTC have it where you could custom build your phone and just pop in the LTE sim card. Just think pick your own screen, ram, internal memory, speaker, etc.

warning wall of text
I remember hating verizon for crippling the bluetooth on my v710? swearing never to go back. I've been GSM since cingular dropped tdma and I switched my 3360 and got a 6620. Then winmo starting with an htc wizard up until an HD2 that I converted to android. Wife has gone from thinking I'm nuts to giving up on my smartphone crack habit. Been mostly cingular/AT&T with a few bad romances with Tmo where I think "this time the reception will be better" (last time cause I really wanted the HD2). Then I walk out of the lumber yard and get 4 voicemails all saying generally wtf are you??
Then along comes the thunderbolt. I'm currently carrying an tmo HD2 running android and cause it's better than my fuze... a hacked beyond belief iphone on att. A friend hands me his verizon phone and I walk through my 7 story concrete/glass office building with the verizon, at&t, and tmo phone all showing signal strength. Tmo fades early as expected. There's a few times where verizon gets beat but most of the time it's got a 5 db advantage.
So a saleslady at the verizon store loans her thunderbolt and I try it in a fringe area (my house). Coverage is better with the thunderbolt and while at&t speedtests better and seems to load faster initially, verizon never hiccups and pauses like at&t and loads every single webpage before at&t completes.
So then the pro's cons.
I have 7 gsm phones all unlocked that I can bring up either att or tmo on but my att contract is up and my tmo is just a $5/mo family line that I just use text on.
unlimited data. I dont have 4g here but it's a chance to grandfather in on unlimited high speed data. Previous calls to at&t complaining about having 4 iphone non-tech unlimited users on my plan where I'm the geek yet I'm the only one without unlim data fall on deaf ears. I may not use the 5 gig I've got but it's a pain having to worry.
Verizon? Really? After laughing at people who were forced to use get it now to get their pictures off their phone? After swearing never to return when they crippled the firmware on the v710? And CDMA?
But the lure of unlimited data gets me to try a thunderbolt. I get in on a 1 year contract and I too get a healthy discount.
Fast forward 3 weeks. Rooted & flashed a non vzw rom after 4 days. 14 day return day came in went without a thought. The iphone is in my desk and the tmo hd2 will probably get turned into a winmo phone when I get time just to see if it's more than an xbox facebook extension. I find there are many times I havent even bothered to turn on wifi since web pages load without pauses, hiccups or waiting. Was going to hold out for a dual core but I've got no complaints. The screen colors seem much more vibrant than my hd2. I got the extended battery but even with not being able to put the phone down be it texting or internet I still last all day on the regular battery. Besides, by now I've got a usb charger about every 5 feet at home.
very tough call and it took a lot to get past going back to verizon and cdma but I'm glad I did. Sorry if I stepped on any toes windows phone, iphone, tmo fanboys, and grammar nazi's. Just MHO. Got a microcell to help not drop calls and still do on att. Verizon goes without extra help and doesnt drop calls. Texts are quick but break at 160chars. I use the phone to monitor several production unix machines so quick sms was imperative.
Drop me a line if you have other q's. I'm generally a lurker but always up for helping. Feel your pain in deciding..
Well this is my first smartphone so I don't have any comparison. But I love it. Love the screen and it's 4.3" of manlyness. I really never understood why people have such animosity for CDMA vs GSM. Yes I get the whole SIM card thing, but is that the only reason?
For me, it was the problem of no data while on a call. Never again AT&T, never again.

Just curious, but what do you have against CDMA other than you cant port to other carriers as easy as GSM? I found CDMA voice is generally better than GSM. The ThunderBolt still uses voice for CDMA so other than it being fast for data over what is considered GSM, it's still pretty much a CDMA phone in the sense it's locked to verizon (probably more so since you cant take it to other CMDA carriers either).
ATT will be going to LTE sometime next year as well though, so eventually when phones are using LTE for voice and data, you would be able to switch between carriers (assuming they both support the same frequency of LTE, there's 2 of them) and different phones on the same carrier
I love my tbolt. I went from a D1 to the TB, and was a little scared of leaving all the great ROMs, kernels and support on my D1 (was running CM7 nightlies with the deprimed kernel on droidforums and that thing ran more amazing than it ever did) but made the jump to get in on 4G before a rumored switch to tiered plans. And I couldn't be happier, I do miss CM and prime's kernels, but the devs have been putting out some great things on the TB. Adrynalyne and thatdudebutch have an amazing ROM with das BAMF 1.5 remix and I'm running imoseyon's lean xtreme kernel. And since development is young on this phone, I can only see it getting better
I wish I could recomend this phone over my Droid x but the battery life is so pitiful in comparison. Don't get me wrong I love the thunderbolt and having 4g is nice (Seattle) but having to be tethered to the wall on charger almost constantly is just annoying. My Droid x would go all day and had better outdoor visibility. The auto brightness on the tbolt is wack. The new blur on gingerbread also puts sense to shame. Onevgreat thing about the tbolt is the camera is really good and very fast. While the Droid x takes great shots it slow to snap them.
In short I'd recomend the Droid x over the thunderbolt.
My upgrade is in 4 days, and im thinking of the thunderbolt, i have no 4g in my area, they say by the holidays maybe.
That being said i love my incredible but want a bigger screen, is this work upgrading or should i wait until the next 4g phones come out. I only want an HTC phone.

Personally, I think it's worth it. The thing's fast, smooth, and powerful (insert joke here). It works well on 3g, and when 4g comes to you (or you travel to a 4g market), you will DEFINITELY not regret it!
I would consider waiting on galaxy 2. That thing looks like a complete beast.

Per my other post regarding service plans, I was hoping for some feedback from you guys.
A couple weeks ago I renewed my contract and got an Inspire. I'm still within the return window, and heard about the Sensation. Obviously the Sensation is the more powerful phone and would be preferable over the Inspire. And of course, Tmobile's $80 unlimited plan is very attractive when compared to $110 for the same plan features from AT&T.
However there's some rumor going around that the Sensation's bootloader is locked down tight and that it might not be able to be cracked so that we can flash custom ROMs. That's obviously a deal-breaker to me since I need root, and just hate the bloatware carriers put on a phone. I'd want it unbranded.
So, what would you guys do? Return the Inspire, go with Tmobile and get the Sensation when it comes available in the hope that it can be unlocked by then? Or stick with the Inspire and let it be?
That is a tempting phone but I think I would hold off and stick with the Inspire. There are a couple of reasons.
1. This phone is already hacked wide open and fully customizable. There is no guarantee the same thing will happen with the Sensation. (I am sure it will, but we never really know)
2. What happens if the AT&T T-Mobile merger goes through and they make you switch phones back to something with the AT&T banding within a year. The only good news is that you would come over at a better grandfathered price, but I am sure they will rip that away when LTE comes in.
3. T-Mobile Coverage leaves something to be desired. It rocks where it is present, but it isn't present in a lot of places. If you travel at all take a good look at that coverage map.
4. I believe the Sensation is only going to be capable of 21mb down (only... ha) not the 42mb down T-Mobile is deploying to cities like Vegas. This makes me wonder what their future plans are and if there is something... dare I say it... even better coming in 3 months.

You make good points.
I presume that LTE is the AT&T 4G network, which the Inspire is designed for? Y'see I posed the above question on the assumption that the Sensation would operate on AT&T's 4G network as the merger goes forward, and/or that AT&T would offer an equal or better phone as the Tmobile customers were migrated over, but that might not be correct. Can you comment?
The problem I face is that I need to make a final decision by the end of today and either return the Inspire and revert to my no-contrast status, or stick with it. But if I stick with the Inspire, I'm locked into it for 2 years.

Not to mention the Sensation will be tied to T-Mobile and if the merger with AT&T goes through, eventually the data will no longer work. T-Mobile has been rumored to be contracting for phones that have quad band HSDPA+ radios. But the latest info is that the G2x doesn't have it. And the G2x was clearly stated it would have the quad band HSDPA+ radio. If the G2x doesn't have, I would not trust the Sensation would have it.
Stick with the Inspire. It's the safer bet.

My understanding about the merger is that T-Mobile runs their "4G" HSPA+ on different bands than AT&T does so the phones will not be compatible. AT&T wants that company so they can have all that bandwidth, all of those users and all of the towers in the densely populated areas like SF, NY and LV that are notorious for dropping calls when the towers get crowded.
AT&T has plans on rolling out LTE (which the inspire is NOT capable of using) within the next year, T-Mobile does not have any announced LTE plans because their HSPA+ is so good and I am sure they are waiting to see if they do get sucked up.
One other note, the T-Mobile "Unlimited Plan" is now saying they will throttle your data speeds when you reach 2GB. That means that blazing fast 21mb/s download speeds you get will be slowed way down until your billing cycle is up. For the time being AT&T's unlimited is unlimited.
I got the Inspire because I am locked to AT&T with the 4 phones with data plans I have on my contract. I look at this as an awesome phone that will definitely hold me over until they release a phone with LTE, which by that time being that I pay an obscene amount of money to them every month I will be elegible for my 15 month or so upgrade. In reality the only time I feel like my phone is inferior is when I am doing speedtest.net tests with friends of mine that have Thunderbolts which where I live get 20mb down and up. In reality though this phone is absolutely sick and it's only downside is that AT&T doesn't seem to be rolling out a very fast HSPA+ network like they advertised.
Great feedback, guys. I appreciate the help. Still on the fence, but getting closer to a decision.

All good points. Here are my thoughts:
* If the Inspire isn't capable of LTE, then it's not really a 4G phone, is it? So maybe I should return the sucker now and wait to see what happens?
* I can't see myself ever going over 2G of data per month, and I have WiFi at home and office, so Tmo's throttle isn't much of an issue for me.
* If AT&T's data network isn't as robust as Tmobile's, then maybe I should really be looking to leave then, no? And if the voice network will eventually merge, wouldn't that be another reason to jump ship and go with Tmo?

Yeah, that would be the cell radio, which is compatible with AT&T, as well as Edge data network (2G).
According to this Engadget article, the G2x may not have the quad band HSDPA+ radio.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/24/t-mobile-g2x-getting-gingerbread-sooner-than-youd-expect-may/
Looking at those specs the Sensation says that it's 3G bands are 2100/900 MHz. AT&T uses 850/1900 MHz bands for 3G. The 2G radio is quadband so it looks like it will work on EDGE. I have an Nexus One that is unlocked but I had to wait for the AT&T banded one because the T-Mobile unlocked one would not work on AT&T 3G bands.
As for the AT&T not having 4G, that battle has been being fought for a long time here. Really what they did is call their HSPA+ network 4G, just like all of the other cell companies that have the same infrastructure starting doing about a year ago. They aren't exactly lying but they are not exactly telling the truth either. They do actually explain what they are doing on their website, but you have to look for it. I am not a fanboy here, I just think people are flaming AT&T even though they aren't exactly hiding what they are doing. They are just taking advantage of the lack of a universal definition for 4G.
http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-...locale=&_dyncharset=UTF-8&solutionId=KB115944
That Sensation is a great phone, honestly if it is unlocked and works on AT&T 3G bands and developers can root it and get some good ROMS I might just have to sell a kidney and buy one off contract to run on AT&T's network.
That is weird because if you go to the ATT site under inspire it says
4G* - HSPA+/LTE HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul
I just assumed it was capable of LTE

That is their definition of what comprises 4G, not what this particular phone is capable of.

Sweet! If AT&T says it's so, I would more believe them than HTC. But in all actuality, the AT&T LTE will likely be their 4G network. This means, probably, that the Inspire is compatible in the fact that it uses 4G. This would also make the Atrix compatible.
But I'm not all that familiar with LTE to begin with.

None of the current phones they are pushing out with "4G" labels have LTE radios. Part of that "What is 4G?" battle. I really think we are at least 1 year away from an LTE phone on AT&T. Just a guess, but I have had them for a long time and watched how slowly they move on stuff like this. An example would be launching the iPhone on only the 2G network when they had a fully deployed 3G network, and rolling out this HSPA+ way after T-Mobile and many international carriers. Not exactly committed to bleeding edge technology here with the big blue ball.

To my way of thinking, 4G is about a speed standard, not a protocol standard. I don't care if the phone speaks Greek or German, as long as it does so at 4G speed. That said, I do agree with you that AT&T (or other large companies) tend to get into the crosshairs because it's easy to pick on the 800 pound gorilla.

That Sensation is a great phone, honestly if it is unlocked and works on AT&T 3G bands and developers can root it and get some good ROMS...

I'm smellin' a lot of 'if' comin' off this plan. Lots of variables - timing, hardware, rooting, unlocking, ROM availability... there's a lot of uncertainty. Might just stick where I am. Besides, there's no saying that even IF everything went well with Tmo and the Sensation that when they're absorbed by AT&T that users won't be forced into an Inspire or other phone anyway.
Understood thanks

Actually AT&T's plan is to be the only carrier that has LTE and HSPA+ so those in areas that don't have LTE can fall back on HSPA+ and still have somewhat of the 4G experience.
Like it has been said, none of their current phones have LTE radios. The Inspire will see 4G HSPA+ type speeds once the backhaul has been completed in your area but will never see LTE speeds when they roll out.
Any last thoughts on this? I have only until tomorrow to make my decision.
Verizon's LTE is fast now, but wait till it gets saturated like ATT. It'll go downhill just like Sprint's WiMax did.
I personally, would stick w/ ATT because of the Tmob merger. When that's done, the ATT network will get better for us the consumers.
If you have an Unlimited data plan, that's enough reason to stay IMHO. All the carriers are going the way of tiered data plans as an attempt to make the "experience" the best for all of us. I don't like it but don't have a choice either.
I think that if you'll fight the urge to have the best now, you'll be better off in the long run when all the wrinkles get ironed out w/ the ATT-Tmob merge.
My $.02

I say sensation because its newwer.LOL
I'm not ENTIRELY certain... but I believe the incredible S's bootloader is signed, and has yet to be cracked (or whatever needs to be done for custom Kernels/Roms) I'm not sure if HTC will continue the trend of signing bootloaders, etc, but seeing as how it's a newer phone, it would most likely follow that pattern.
If you're into hacking/modding/tweaking to the extent of a fully unlocked phone (read:custom kernels, more rom choice) then get the Inspire 4G.
If you find yourself pleased with Sense 3.0/ HTC's offerings in general, get the Sensation.
As a side note, I'm sure root will eventually be found for it, but no telling when with HTC changing their phone security game up.
Ok well I am currently with T-Mobile. My contract ends in November, which i will be eligible for an upgrade around that time, IF i want to renew with them. I was actually going to get an LG G2x but after 2.3.4 came out and integrated video chat on the Nexus S I am going back to considering the Nexus S. Plus the fact that updates are rather instant with Nexus phones. And yes, the G2x has dualcore, blah blah blah. I dont really use my phone for gaming other than angry birds or fruit ninja, which run fine on singlecore and if you look at my phone now, which is a Vibrant, its basically a Nexus Clone. So i'll be content with a NS. Now the thing that im torn between is WHICH Nexus to go for? Considering my contract expires with t-mobile soon, I can either get the T-Mo NS on a new contract and get it for 100 bucks, if it doesnt even go down more in price, OR I could leave T-Mobile and get the NS 4G from Sprint. I can't come to a decision.
First T-Mobile: I love t-mobile, haven't had any bad experience with T-Mobile and currently have a Vibrant. I am content with their download speeds and everything. Now, what I dont like is the fact that At&t might acquire T-Mobile next year, which I really dont want to be a part of At&t. Been with them before and after checking out their plans and all the restrictions they have, no thanks. But no one knows if it will even go through. Another thing im iffy about is the fact that the NS on T-Mobile cannot do the Video Chat over 3G. It is restricted to Wifi only. I really dont like that. How are they going to allow Qik and all the other apps do video calling over 3G/4G but not Google Talk?
Sprint: I have a couple of friends on Sprint. One of them has an Epic 4G. From what i've seen online on the prices and such, It's actually not that bad and truly unlimited (no data cap). I was about to completely switch after my contract ended, except for a couple reasons. One, CDMA. I prefer having the option to switch phones by just removing the SIM card and putting it on another phone and viola, presto! With Sprint I would have to go to the store and have them change it, which is annoying. Another thing holding me back, the 4G. Like i said, my friend has an Epic 4G and doing data speed tests, My Vibrant got faster 3G download speeds than my friends Epic connected to 4G. I average now around 3-3.5mbps while my friends Epic on 4G gets 2-2.5mbps download speeds averagely. We are located in Miami btw, if that makes a difference in speed. Is Sprint planning on making their 4G speeds faster? Will there be a difference with the NS 4G? I dont think anyone knows but probably not. Oh and NS 4G is 100 bucks more than T-Mo NS.
So Im between a rock and a wall on deciding here. Anyone got any advice?
I decided to move from VZW to T-Mo! Woooot!
First I will share my experience with the setup and porting of my new accounts then talk about using a VZW Phone on a T-Mo line. Yeah, I know there are couple of these threads already but they are somewhat old and unmonitored.
The transition went smooth but seemed to take almost 1.5 hours in the T-Mo store! I thought that was kinda excessive! I think the employee that was helping us was new. She didn't know much, couldn't explain anything, and kept going to her manager with every simple question I asked. Its all good, new employees have to learn! So I was fine with that aspect of the switch. It was a Sunday afternoon with nothing else going on.
They moved me from a 24GB Plan on VZW to the T-Mo One Military plan. I then added the $10.00 advanced data package on our phones. Its nice not worrying about overages and NOT paying an arm and leg for the data plan!
So my VZW bill went from about $350 to $150.00 on T-Mo. In all fairness I do have device payments on VZW, but moved those phones to save money. Will pay them off on the final bill. Still pretty happy with this! The device payments accounted for $80.00 of the VZW Bill. So I am still saving about $120.00 a month.
So now onto the service aspect.... Over all T-Mo, in FARGO ND, cant compete with Verizon! Not at all. Oh well, not too worried, I get decent coverage and "fair" data speeds.
At home, T-Mo gets about 10 megs down and 2 megs up. This was about the same speed Verizon had before they upgraded whatever tower was near my house. So, ok, at home, data sucks. No biggie, I have decent home internet package and to be quite frank, I never use my phone when I am home. I have so many gadgets with bigger screens to surf with.
At Work, Both Verizon and T-Mo get the same, 5 to 10 down and 1 to 5 up. Oh well. I can say that T-Mo is more reliable in this specific building for data when you are near a window, which I am. However, when you go into the building, where there are no Windows, T-Mo drops its data pretty low. We are talking about EDGE data. Verizon speeds would drop but not as drastic as the T-Mo. All in all I would say at work everything is equal.
Have not been around town much but when driving to work today I was using speedtest.net along the way. In general, Verizon beets T-Mo all the way from home to work.
So, now that I am a T-Mo customer with a Verizon phone I realized that there was going to be a minor learning curve. I cant get Advanced Calling features such as WiFi Calling, HD Calling, and Simultaneous Talk and Text! I knew something like what would happen because of difference in carrier implementation of those services. No biggie there. I understand that I would only need to flash the USERDATA partition to transform my VZW to a T-Mo s9+. Can anyone confirm that?
Also, I heard that the latest T-Mo update is hosed and not being pushed to the phone. I am currently on Verizon build ARE6 Dated Mid May 2018. I am not sure of the boot loader versions but I am thinking I should be able to go back one build on the T-Mo build and flash it. Hopefully. Anyone know about this?
Right now, I am at work, and I was wondering, was anyone able to turn on the advanced calling on Verizon Firmware without flashing USERDSATA? Also, those of you that made this switch with this phone, did you flash the T-Mo USERDATA? I was actually thinking about flashing the International Snap Dragon or the US Unbranded Snapdragon ROM on this phone instead of T-Mo. Did anyone do that? What sort of drawbacks did you have?

You'll need to wait until the U1 rom gets updated to bootloader V2. You'll need to successfully flash to the unlocked without Sim, then flash the Tmobile specific files with the Tmobile Sim in.

Thanks for the heads up.
Why the switch? Here I get free Verzion service as long as I have Comcast (Xfinity) internet. No internet? You can get cell phone service for $10 bucks.

Wow! Thats crazy good. WE dont have Comcast here and I can assure that CableOne and Midcontitennt cable will not be offering cell service anytime soon! Hell, we barely have a decent selection of HD channels. The big cable company doesnt even have Comedy Central.
I live in Fargo man. We dont have options. We just take what we can get, lol
And an update to anywho who may have read this...
The U1 v2 Bootloadder for th eunlocked device is now available thanks to @bboii86
The thread is here: //G965U1 XAA\\ Stock Odin Files Firmware G965U1UES2ARF4
I flashed this and I am totally Verizon free now! When the phone booted up it asked to reboot so it could provision the phone with the SIM (T-Mo).
When i did it came back up and WiFi calling was enabled.
Woot! My jouney is complete!

Hey, I'm planning to do the same you did in the next few weeks.
I'm a bit lost on what to do (first samsung phone ever), could you go trough the steps you performed?
Did you had to change the CSC at all?
Thanks!

I don't use cable (other than their internet). I get all my shows off torrents. My relative does have cable and does have 3 televisions, I just don't use it.

No, I did not do a CSC change. I only flashed the U1 firmware linked in the prior post.
I let it factory reset, the phone booted, told me it needed to reboot to adjust features for the SIM and then it came back up a second time. Walked through set up and everything worked fine.
If you are new to Samsung then you need to get familiar with an app for your PC called Odin. Its the too that is used to flash factory firmware to Samsung devices. There are tons of tutorials on how to use Odin so I wont bother with a walk through.
And one last follow up.
I have now flashed the T-MO ARF4 update and have ALL the T-Mobile Features. When I call I get the "HD+" icon now.
