I know this kernel isnt working for everyone, however, just thought Id mention it is working very well for me so far. Didnt need it for lag as that was gone with the 1.5-1.8 kernel, but it is worth it for the boot improvement, which was my only gripe with this device. In a truly mobile productivity device boot times SHOULD be less than 30s.
Will report later today after more stress tests and temperature checks.
Oh ya, I am running CleanROM Inheritance 3.0.4, fsync disabled, scroll cache disabled, and force GPU rendering.
Cant wait to see how this flies after Data2SD Mod (cant apply until i get back home to Halifax - East coast represent)

Just finished stressing the machine quite hard, everything is stable so far, temperature hasnt gone up at all either

Good call, I forgot that most ppl would be interested in the battery drain.
I was fully charged before flashing new kernel, I have used for over 4 hrs, been doing heavy browsing, stress tests, and benchmark tests....all in performance mode.....im at 67% dock, 76% tablet...I keep screen brightness around 20%-25%. Havent noticed any more drain than usual.
Ran a benchmark test in balanced mode and got the same results as I used to get with 1.5-1.8 Ghz/700 GPU kernel....if you are worried about stressing your system leave it in balanced and switch to performance mode when needed.

Troo that overclock to 1.9 is a battery killer.

That sucks I havent seen much of a battery hit at all. For the past 2 hrs ive left it in balanced mode and there is no diff b/w 1.5-1.8 kernel at 1450mV. I didnt use the 1400 mV kernel for very long bc i didnt notice any battery improvement, maybe the 1400 mV kernel is much better, are you using 1400 mV kernel?
Ive been using my tab for 5 hrs in performance and 2 hrs in balanced and im still at 33% dock and 87% tablet. Thats essentially the same as it used to be, should get at least get a full day of heavy use, especially considering I have been running stress tests, benchmarks, and repeated cold boots to make sure its up to snuff.
The screen and wifi are the biggest battery consumers, overclocking from 1.5-1.8 to 1.9 shouldnt hit battery too much.

I dont have any games. Games are cool, I just dont play them, and will never put a game on my tablet lol. I really cant say how battery would be affected by this kernel when gaming.
You might be wondering why I even bother with this kernel if I do not game. Well, my good sir, I happen to be a performance junkie, and cant stand lag of any sort lol. Multitasking is what i focus on, this tab has replaced all my other devices, and am happy to say my workflow is smoother and faster.

From my personal use I think the kernal rocks! I have used it before and just went to it again recently. The only reason I switched was because the Rom I used didnt have the option to install that Kernal and I was too lazy to flash it again. On a regular everyday use I keep it in balanced mode and really dont see a hit in battery. I personally only saw a little bit of battery drain in gaming however in the graphic and CPU heavy games there was battery drain anyways. I can deal with plugging it in more to get more performance out of my tab. I am one of those people that has 5 home screens, ones dedicated to all of my games and its fully filled with 6 different folders each containing atleast 10 more games. This would definitely slow down my tablet however with this Kernal its different. I also get around the same results in quadrant 7436 to be exact.I do see a temp increase but its not too large so I can deal with it.
Over all I think its the best Kernal out right now hands down.

Just curious - why do you even power-off your device to begin with? Normally, "mobile devices" are meant to be on always-on anyway, so I just don't see why the cold-boot time is such a big deal. The device goes into a deep-sleep state when in standby with very little power drain, which pretty much eliminates the need to constantly power off and back on the begin with.

Personally, I only reboot my TF700 when flashing kernels and/or ROM's - otherwise it's always on. That way you never have to wait for it to boot!

I don't think the boot time has nothing to do with 1.8 or 1.9 kernel, my cold boot is about 22 sec. They should be about the same depended on how many app services you have running on your device.

I cold boot all the friggin time lol just my personal preference. It feels snappier after cold boot and I am constantly deleting stuff and trying new things/setups/setting configurations to eek out more performance, after each change I cold boot to get an accurate assessment of the changes that I have made. Lately ive been spending several hours a day trying to improve tab, which has meant a lot of cold boots. For the past few weeks ive spent more time optimizing and assessing this tab than acually using it, kind of nuts, i know lol, but i really enjot it and im off school right now and my hometown is in the middle of nowhere, less than 100 ppl live in my town lol. I normally shut down before bed, and do another cold boot after I finish classes around 7, boot time matters to me.
Oh and I will not charge this thing if it is on, I figure that draining the battery (no matter how little) while charging cant be good for its life long term.

I honestly dont know if it should or shouldnt, all i know is that i was booting in about 40s-45s before flashing 1.9 kernel, now i boot in 30s, Ive seen results by doing this. I time my boot times with stopwatch on my phone, i monitor everything going on in this tablet very heavily. Every time i change anything i like to be able to assess its overall impact on performance.

Impact of higher clock speeds

I have heard a lot of people saying they can't tell the difference between the underclocked default and running at 172 to 528 so I thought it best to discuss the benefits, disbenefits and thus if it's worth doing, if it's worth slowing it down further and if it's worth going even faster.
So far I have found the most noticable area of improvement to be in file transfer performance. To transfer a 134mb file from SD card to notebook I got 14 seconds vs 19 seconds at stock speed (somebody confirm?).
I have not noticed any change in battery life.
Was it underclocked from new due to cooling issues or battery or what?
I think it was also a bit quicker updating 13,000 camera locations in MySpeed.
A lot of the variables are difficult to test so any suggestions would be welcome.

You didn't verify what speed you are running it at. I assume you set it at a constant 528? I overclock it every once in awhile. I think I may set it to 528 and let it sit all day.
I don't know about you guys, but when I leave it locked at 528 for a long period of time. My phone speed gets ****ed. It feels like its running at 172. 528 is great for when you're using your phone heavily, but once you put your phone to sleep, it seems that it drops from 528 regardless of what you have it set at. Try it out... you'll see. Especially when the phone starts getting hot. Left it on all day and the touch screen was way too hot to be normal. Not good.
Why you would **** with the speed/heat consumption of a device that already gets hot charging the battery is beyond me. It's asking for failure.

Hmm I've had my phone @ 528MHz for like a month now. Even leaving it on for weeks at that speed I don't see any problems. One thing you might try when it starts going slow like that is make sure it's still running at 528(OS resets it sometimes) and check what apps are running.
At any rate, for me overclocking works perfectly and I haven't had any issues at all with it. For battery life it'll probably depend on your usage. Clocking at 528MHz will lower battery life if you leave your phone asleep most of the time(even if you set a lower minimum since there's more of a jump the cpu has to make when scaling back to max speed), but if you use your phone a lot and it's rarely asleep then you'll probably actually get better battery life with it set to 528 max and min, since the cpu no longer has to use the energy required to change speed.
EDIT: @afflaq: It's not the cpu that gets hot from charging, it's the battery. You're not going to overheat the cpu just by clocking it to its rated speed.
Ditto @ marcusmaximus, I got the same temperature readings during 528 and 384 mHz. Been running it on 528 for a while as well.

Which overclocking application are you using, and which Android version are you running?
Overclocking
It works fine overclocked all the time. I don't even notice any difference in battery life either. My phone is mostly in sleep mode btw. On all day, I only see it drop to 66% with light usage. Overclocked surfing the web, I surfed for an hour continuous and the battery went from 100% to around 80%.
Using Open overclocker and any rooted build should work as long as you have it setup right. Just set it to 528 in both fields and forget it. The app automatically asks permission from the root app every time you reboot.
I am currently using TheDudes build and it works perfect. I have never had it reset the speed either as others suggest. Try one of his builds and get the Open Overclocker app from the market. That is the best build anyway.
Currently running .93 ... waiting for .95 which will be even faster.

What does the 1.5ghz overclock do to the battery?

Meaning, does the battery life take a dip when you overclock to 1.5ghz. Does it get any hotter? Is heat an issue at all on this thing? Also, any performance or battery changes from installing the tiamet kernel itself? I'm in the wifi xoom btw.
Strangely enough battery life seems to be about the same. Heat has not been an issue mainly due to having the dual core, however its something you always want to keep an eye on.
Battery life is affected most by the screen. Screen> Network connections > CPU > RAM
There was a thread that someone made a while back about the things that affected battery life the most. If I can find It ill send it your way. After seeing the charts I figured Id try changing some settings.
things I did:
1. Set my max cpu freq to 1.19 min to 488 same for all my cpu tunner profiles ( I wanted to have my phone running the same all the time)
2. Lower'd my screen settings. I didnt need a pocket flashlight EVERYTIME I unlocked my phone.
3. Turned off un needed network connections. Its not hard to turn them back on when you need them.
4. I then looked for things that were running but were not needed by anything ( google maps are used by a few apps so dont disable it haha) I used Uninstaller for root users to get rid of some things.
After all these steps my battery life went WAY up. I have been doing the same thing on my Xoom now and my batt lasts the same at 1.5 as it did at 1.
I still get VERY respectable battery life at 1.5ghz, I can easily get through the day with normal usage. Yesterday night in fact, I left the house with maybe 75% battery life, used my tablet quite a lot throughout the evening(left the house around 9, went to sleep around 1am) and used it all morning basically constantly from 7am to around noon and came home with 9% battery left.
No problems here either. Woke up around 8:30 yesterday and used it all day sometimes pretty heavy. Finally had to plug it in around 6:30. I'm home all day with a broken hip and femur, so I've been putting it through the paces. Running @ 1.5ghz with interactive gov.

Im very happy with the battery life on this thing. I expected 4 hours max after a few weeks of use/charges. I never thought that it would keep up with anything Apple, Lets face it.. Apple knows how to make stuff run forever. But I was plesently suprised. Xoom +1000

I wouldn't worry about any CPU damage- too many people have reported success (and no reports of failure).
Anyone else notice with the tiamat kernel that their xoom becomes very unstable overclocked at 1.5 using setCPU? Mine was essentially a soft brick at 1.5 constant rebooting and never able get pass the unlock screen, I had to rewipe with bootloader. I can do 1.2 no problem but don't even want to try going higher.
All of our chips have variations, so the overclock isn't universally guaranteed. That being said, I've been using the Tiamat kernel @1.5GHz since it was released with no problems.

Hi, my Triumph should be arriving in the mail in just a few days and i was wondering which is the best kernel or ROM and Kernel combination that is best for battery life? I've heard that battery life on the Triumph is not so good. Maybe it's false but i would still like to know.

The battery life is a lot better now with the latest builds of CM7 and MIUI.
I just use CM7 and leave wifi and bluetooth off, no juice defender or anything like that and I can easily go all day with no charge, typically about a day and a half and my battery is getting low but it really depends on what you are doing like games, wifi, videos and whatnot.
Before I think there was a problem with the battery draining while in idle but things have cleared up since then, There are also third party kernels you can OC and everything, but you can use them to undervolt as well to save some battery if you know what you are doing. over on androidforums there is a lot more chatter about this phone, just so you know.

Thanks. I got my phone today and im loving it so far. Do you know which of those third party kernels are good for battery life and that i can install over stock? I'm not quite ready to install a ROM yet but i already did the HTC Thunderbolt Build.prop tweak and obviously im rooted.
It's usually not the kernel but whatever governor you have it set to use. Even the stock can get improved performance if you switch the governor to such--”performance”--but I'm probably not the guy to tell you about which one is best.
I also have the silly feeling a lot of misconceptions abound here...in the form of ”I changed this setting and now my device lasts longer..., oh btw I no longer play with it 24/7.” In other words, use drastically impacts battery performance. JuiceDefender is an amazing tool but it won't do you a bit of good if you're testing out your phone's Adobe Flash capabilities regularly.

The Savagezen and interactive (not sure if interactive is on any of the kernels for this phone.) gov isn't that great. At least not in my experience. I had SmartassV2 on my girlfriends phone and it got ~3600 on Antutu benchmark at 1.5 and when I used Savage at 1.5 she got ~1700. The interactive gov made my friends Dinc2 noticably slower. Just switching home screens it lagged to the point it was hard to get into the app to change the gov.
CM7 + TheOC kernel allows adjusting voltage & overclock or underclock. You really should flash a CM7 ROM. Having it just rooted can be dangerous because you're not using a custom recovery to make a backup image, and if something messes up, you don't have a backup ROM to restore. Going to a different ROM forces you to make a backup, then there's a backup to restore if you mess things up.
Governors just tell the CPU how fast to ramp up to a certain frequency, & how long to stay there. It's hard to balance fast ramp up (less lag), and low battery drain (spend more time in the lower frequencies). I like interactive/x, find that smartassv2 spends too much time in the mid frequencies (~500) even for light work. Using the app CPU Spy helps a lot to see what's going on. Also it tells you whether your phone is sleeping properly when screen is off, which is a big factor for battery drain.

Hi, first to defend myself, I did search and found that everybody says good things for every kernel. So every kernel is best for Stock ICS?
I got confused. Yes I'am total noob and recently learned how to root and flash custom rom's.
I just want to hear your opinion for best kernel running on Stock ICS.
I need kernel that is good for the battery but also snappy for the system. I don't play games and I use my phone for calls, reading news, working on excel files, google maps, mail and taking pictures.
My phone is Nexus S GT-I9020T on Wind network.

That's what I was thinking. With Glados kernel I had problems with restarting after the screen turns of, also with Matr1x kernel. Also I read that there are restarting issues with IMO ezekeel kernels. Yes I know that probably the most stable it's the stock kernel, but there is problem with battery, I had more juice with GB and CMD 7. That's why Google paused ICS update on Nexus. But probably I will stick with Stock Kernel because for me it's better to have less battery for now instead random restarts. I hate when my phone it's not in perfect state.
Just managed to get ezekeels CFS on there and I get the reboot bug after going to standby.
Looking for updates but the thread is huge. Yet to try BFS.

You can try and turn off deep idle for your reboots.
Solves the problem 99% of the time (totally made up stat that could actually be true)
But actualy that function (deep idle) it's the most impotant thing in the kernel. It gives more battery time. Other thing are just fancy. More battery and no hickups, I dont need overclocking because I dont play games.

Deep idle gives more battery time under certain conditions (screen off but not completely idle, playing music for instance). It won't really give you more battery time if your phone is actually idle with the screen off.

Same here but not bad at least for me just one reboot since i installed yesterday when he posted. 2.1 kernel I never got any reboots

Pre-requisites are met.
So as I understood the battery consumption is reduced only if you listen music, because you can't do anything else when the screen is off. And the deep idle is working only in standby mode (screen off).

Deep idle only shows savings if there is tasks running while the screen is off VS the same situation without deep idle.
So for someone doing commuting (like simms22 for example) and listening to music for around an hour, they'll lose less battery with deep idle than without.
You won't actually save battery if your phone is actually idle with deep idle enabled.
It's not some kind of magical function that makes your phone use less battery doing tasks with the screen on, deep idle disables certain components of the phone while executing tasks with the screen off, instead of having it "at full speed" as if the screen was on.

No problem. I think Deep Idle is probably the mod by Ezekeel surrounded by the most misconceptions.
Most new users want it absolutely but don't seem to know why.
On His Glados kernel I noticed that Android OS was using 20%-21% of the battery and on the stock kernel 30%-31%.
Android System was using around 14% and on the stock around 19%.
Ok, have you decided to give the Glados 2.2 another go? I believe I have finally tweaked it so that it is stable for me.
Before I was getting restarts within 30 seconds of the screen turning off. I have cornered this (on my phone at least) to a problem with NSTools auto-setting the lower frequency to 100mhz. Changing it back to 200mhz and I have yet to see the system restart itself. Im not overclocked, because I dont see the point as everything is fairly snappy with this new kernel. I dont really play games on it so Im not fussed.
I did used NSTools and the frequency was set to 200mhz and I had system restarting on screen off. Using stock ICS with Glados 2.2
Also I had green annoying flickr on locking and unlocking the screen.

Cappy Overheating Questions

This is my first Android phone (2nd device overall), I love it, it was my free upgrade option from AT&T, on number 2, the first, I completely bricked trying to upgrade to GB stock..... After I got the taste of flashing ROM's, thanks to TRusselo and his ninja skill, I find myself oriented towards the leaner ones because of memory issues, I run V6 Supercharger , SlimICS :victory:, with JRummy's ROM Toolbox Pro :good: (gotta support the kicka$$ apps), TB, blah blah blah.
My major complaint is that my Cap runs hot, I have OS Monitor on it because I got tired of not knowing the threshold. It bothers me that my phone gets over 110 degrees Fahrenheit , I've even had a brief history of random reboots I attribute to heat when I ran the ICSSGS 4.0.3 ROM (Awesome stuff, but once I bit into Slim, it was over). Is there a way to manage the heat or get a case for the phone that helps to manage the temperature? Or am I S.O.L unless I keep a frozen gel pack nearby?
BTW, first post, I surf the posts often and since I didn't see any questions about overheating for this particular Samsung model thought I'd give this a shot

Mine runs really hot too, mine gf has a cappy and they run the same everything most of the time, but mine is the only one that gets stupid hot. Would love it to be fixed but I think its probably a manufacturing issue. Problem is it wears on the battery. 10-20 of use and you will burn your ear if you want to talk on the phone . The metal back certainly doesn't help either.
Primary reason why your cappy gets hot is because of overclocking if you're clock is high the process of the CPU is high and pay the price of higher battery consume. I'm on 1200 OC and it get's hot hen I'm playing HD games. I suggest that you stay on 1Ghz.

Primary reason why your cappy gets hot is because of overclocking if you're clock is high the process of the CPU is high and pay the price of higher battery consume. I'm on 1200 OC and it get's hot hen I'm playing HD games. I suggest that you stay on 1Ghz.

I have the max set at 1Ghz, min 600Mhz, Performance, SIO, I'm sure the fact that the temperature outside being over 100 F doesn't help at al. I have overclocked it before and it started smoldering, not literally, just felt like it.
I've literally taken damp cloth's and set them underneath the phone on occasion to see if that will help, it definitely does, so does setting the gel ice pack under it, so I have found ways around it. I would probably only trade this phone for one of the S3's, but this phone has definitely earned the top place among my favorite devices all time. It's just as tough as a Blackberry, and easier to use than an iPhone.
That's why LOL, 600MHz minimum and 1000MHz max, with performance gov, that keeps it at max clock all the time XD take that off OMG...

I'm still a NUB, lol, I don't deny it, but I'm all about learning the way of the Droid.... I added some of the Devil Helly Bean Add-On apk's into the Slim Bean, so I have my high points, just have the low ones just as often..

I have never knowingly oc my phone, it would get hot on GB even before I rooted and went to cm. 10-20 mins of web browsing brings my temps up to about 41 C (106 f) I am pretty new to this, where to I check my clock settings?
I'm running helly bean nightly s
I have switched batteries with my gf cappy so I'm pretty sure its not a battery issue
Maybe a bad/defective battery is the cause of the problem since there is no overclockin...???

With a metal back of cappy, it will easily heat up because it conducts heat in the metal. Based on my experience it is cause by the user usage depending on how high is the voltage/clock require of each app used to maintain it's smoothness and reached it's maximum clock. You can see your usage at Settings>Battery.
You can use CPU Spy or Voltage Control to see your OC and adjust it. You can check also in Settings> Performance >Processor.

Yeah, you'll learn in time, just try to search and read throughout the forums. I suggest that you lower your min to 100/200 and max to 1000/1200,
use smartassv2 and sio governor. This settings saves me some battery and to extent that still smooth, slick and good ui/gaming/app performance.
If you're on DEVIL KERNEL, go to recovery>devil>governor profile> tick SMOOTH.

Wasn't doggin' you dude, Just letting you know that could be the cause of your problem. Awhile ago I might have flamed you, I have matured and get that not everyone reads (not this situation), and I have to get used to that. People make mistakes, I know I do even if I wanna act like I don't. I am just helping around here now since I have gotten as much knowledge as the some of the users that joined XDA and other hacking forums in the beginning because I was always searching to find out ways to do it on my own, asking for help with stuff that no one talked about. So I am glad that I was able to help you in a way, sorta.

Thank you both, b and takeout.... I know neither of you were doggin me, b-eock. I've been one of the behind the scenes types but I've seen a few of your posts, I know you know what you're talking about, I definitely appreciate the guidance. Truth be told, I know I'm still a nub here, but I know my way well enough, after you break something a few times, its only natural to pick up a few tricks along the way.
Yeah you'll learn something here just have the patience, experiment, test things out yourself to conclude and rather soon it'll be your hobby reading

my gets hot sometimes too. im on helly bean latest 08/08/12 version, also battery gets sucked down quick, barely get 8 hrs and i do virtually nothing. ics cm9 was great on battery.

I know my battery is going quick on the SlimBean 2.0 ROM, but the heat issue still happens, I have noticed with my OS monitoring tool that it gets hotter if you have programs running constantly in background using up high CPU %. I was able to isolate a few of the programs as things I could remove, overall it does still run hot, but it's not as bad.
I use the free version of the OS Monitor on Play Store, you can set it to run under root and to autostart when the device is turned on.
Picked up an 1800 mah battery and my batty life is great! Going to bed with 40ish percent left

try Smartassv2 gov and change your min from 600 to 100, then note the temps, or run a log of them.
typically my phone runs about 35° C (95° F) and that is with an otterbox commuter case on the phone. When the gps is on in the car, I use a vent mount to keep it at 40° or less, and never have to take the case off.
I read that higher temps, example 45°, really shorten battery life, and you wiil only get 200 charge cycles instead of 500 from the battery.

Amazon, was a great purchase, got an oem battery, there is a huge thread in the accessories section about the 1800 mah epic 4G battery that fits in the cappy
