[Q] Can't install Fallout Evo. ROM. Error (status 0) - HTC Desire S

Hello. I am new to the Desire S, and I'm having troubles while installing the Fallout Evolution v. 5.0 custom rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679125).
When I try to install the zip file from sd card through recovery, it says the following:
"Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /sdcard/Fallout_Evolution_V5.0.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted"
I have checked the MD5sum and it's alright.
My recovery is v3.2.0.1_xda.cn
The phone is locked, but it's s-off and rooted with h-boot 1.09.0099, radio 7.57.39.10M, though lowveld (the developer) says that it's not necessary to have an upgraded h-boot and it doesn't matter the radio...
Do you know what's happening here? Thanks in advance!

I've never seen that hboot version on a Desire S. This may seem like a dumb question, but you really DO have a Desire S, right?

Haha, I bought it yesterday from a second-hand seller, it came rooted, and hell yeah, it's a Desire S haha! And that's the version that my hboot shows...

How do you know it's a desire s? None of those versions make any sense, if it is.

Hell sorry, I'm dumbie today haha... it's wildfire s... Sorry, deleting post...

Those versions are all for the Wildfire S, not the Desire S. That's the phone you've got I'm afraid, so you need to be in the Wildfire S forums using their ROMs.
OP beat me to it by about 2 seconds.

If I Google your hboot version, I only get references to the HTC Wildfire, not to the Desire S/Saga.
Having said that, you have the phone in your hands so I'm sure you know best.... try to flash a recent version of 4ext recovery and try again.
But I really, really doubt that you have the phone that you think you have, which would make my advice dangerous and wrong.
edit: nvm, I was too slow

you should make this more obvious that its for 1.0.2 hboots that are for the new stock gingerbread builds
this doesnt affect most people that are in this dev forum as we rooted ages ago
stupidily flashed the Gibgerbread RUU, but now running InsertCoin 1.1.1 again and couldn't be happier. Revolutionary works like a charm!

is there any change-log about this??..or only a new radio??
Is it true? and any change log?
Or just the radio upgrade?
could someone upload a rooted version pls?
Wouldn't this be part of HTC removing the patents they lost against apple? HTC are ment to be releasing new updates for all phones.
And then again.. Why would they release a new update of froyo when Gingerbread was released?
This makes no sense?

in fact it makes sense kinda cos they never did release ota ginger. the last official for the desire its still the froyo and the ginger ruu was only for developers and not officialy supported.

Bravo Oxygen r2.
Website has two confusing explanation:
1. "Downgrade protection, these HBOOTs cannot be overwritten by an OTA or RUU, unless you flash a downgrader HBOOT first."
2. "Will my phone stay S-OFF forever?
Yes and no. As soon as you decide to flash a stock RUU that has a HBOOT update in it, this hacked HBOOT will be overwritten."

[Q] Why Sense 4 roms all ported from one v?

Why Sense 4 roms all ported from one v?
There are 3 roms but all of ported from one v.
I guess this sense 4 rom is lite versiyon.
That's because One V has similar hardware as the Desire S. Till we get kernel 3.0, we can't expect One S ports (One X and One S have same software). It requires re-sizing too, so it needs work. Even One V ports aren't perfect now, some devs said that they tried porting from one s but couldn't get it to boot. Just wait till HTC releases official ICS with kernel 3.0, then we should get One S port
Hallo guys) I think now we haven't got any port from One S or One X because those two have another hardware, and it's difficult to port their roms... but we need to be patient, our devs will do what they can)
I have one question: will we have to update to official rom and then to custom rom like on Sensation?
I hope not, but we will only know for sure when the update comes out/is leaked. I think that the Sensation users need to follow that procedure due to partition changes in hboot, and i expect desire s to get a similar update.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
Ok, is it difficult to update ? I read instructions for Sensation, didn't mension difficulties, only install zip from bootloader and then install custom from recovery after SuperWipe... Do you know, will we need to do this SuperWipe or simply wipe all partitions from recovery and install custom? HBOOT would be updated already...

Will that mean we will have to flash kernels separately via fastboot?

Maybe, but apparently madmaxx83 has something up his sleeve for htc dev users, check the 4Ext thread
Edit: Lol, i almost forgot, updating your hboot doesn't remove s-off, just displays s-on, your still s-off No need to fastboot flashing kernels xD

Ok, time will show... I heard, that official ics will be released in early April... so waiting every day Anyway, our devs will do instructions
it's mid April now, but...
this sounds like a lot of hassle hboots and bootloaders, if the ics update is stable enough i might just stick on it for months till a simple root like superoneclick is out

Need advice before rooting a new Desire S :D

Hi all,
I am new to android and just* want to root my phone as many apps demand your phone to be rooted such as full backup apps, firewall apps and other similar apps.
I am still on HTC's stock 2.3.3 with HTC sense v.2.1 (though i have downloaded the OTA update for 2.3.5 but kinda confused over negative reviews of 2.3.5 update..so I am holding it here right now)
But when I saw a guide here though quite helpful but I was a bit confused as what I read on other articles on XDA + on other blogs that a thing called HBOOT is a bit tricky to tackle while following a particular rooting method; as there are many ways to root like using revolutionary..installing custom bootloaders etc (is it really neccessary? I just want to root my phone and don't plan to install any custom ROMs in near future.)
I am confused
- as to should I really let my warranty go off the table as its just a month old phone sacrificing it for just a few apps I want to use.
- Please tell me that, will I be able to search for and install the officially released OTA updates such as the 2.3.5 / ICS after I have done S-OFF + Rooted my phone??
If answer to both of the questions above is a "YES"
then plz tell me step by step of how to S-OFF and ROOT my phone (I found multiple ways to Root the phone and now I am confused and not really confident on which way/approach to follow)
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Sky770
If you want to root, do not download the OTA and install!!
You are in a great position, and you can easily root your hboot with the alpharevx.
Do it, you won't regret it.
Also, we can't give you step by step guides... Follow the index links.
Also, you can't install updates after rooted. But you won't need to. We will have the official ICS prerooted before.

ok.. I really have no idea about what happens and what not happens if i do downgrade my HBOOT but I see many people here on XDA done that (downgraded their HBOOT) Can you shed some light on this topic?
Also, I would definitely want to try official 2.3.5 and/or the official ICS release (whenever they release one; around Q3/Q4 2012? ) so is there any* way to install these if I do revolutionary? I would def. like to find these updates via OTA (will my phone detect these from official HTC servers?)
PS: I am trying to stay as long as with official ROM as of now :| so no near future plans to flash my baby with a custom one

You will not thank me for this, but for your sake I suggest reading instead of writing. All of the info you're asking for is written in the guides, and people that write the guides don't have enough patience to answer those that don't bother reading and ask the same questions over and over. Writing questions instead of reading FAQs and guides leaves you with less probability of having a good answer or having an answer at all, and clutters the already cluttered forum.

As you are on the old hboot, there is no need of downgrading, that's why I said, do not install the upgrade.
We have a ROM, by Proxuser, which is the rooted version of the OTA with no modifications and will work out pretty well.
Once rooted you will not be able to receive any OTA upgraded, but IMHO, hardly matters, you will get the same and better versions out here.
We already have the leak of ICS build for desire S, and it's pretty fast, forget q3
Also we have very functional sense 4 lite, which is faster than sense 3.6
So again, do the revolutionary, it's quite simple actually for you, and flash the saga 3D,, for a stock experience

Well the beauty of rooting is trying out custom ROMs... I don't think you should root if you don't intend too. You seriously won't regret it. Just take a NAND backup, you can always restore to it if you don't like the custom ROMs.
And as I have said before...
No, you can't get OTAs once rooted, but you can still install these maually, and you will be able to do it way before the update actually hits your phone 'officially'.
As we have said too, you are in a good position. No need to downgrade at all. Your hboot version is the right one.

Right.. When I acually was craving for a droid I was crazy as hell to root n try out new ROMs but... when I got an HTC I was simply hands down n thought not to touch this beauty. HTC Desire S is quite a package at this cheap price + hardware config.

No, that's not what forums are for. You should probably look at the name of the forum and think, what does "-developers" part stand for, and why isn't it called "XDA-users-in-doubt-that-are-too-lazy-to-bother-reading". Your "period" you can use elsewhere.
To your last question: Windows is what the guides are written for, so doing everything on Windows will be better - it won't require you to understand and "translate" everything to Linux.

@sky770... The guys are right, In my opinion it's only worth rooting your device if you plan to try a couple of custom ROM's. You seriously won't regret. HTC have a habit of leaving some of the older devices to "fall & die" without providing updates. Through the hard work and determination of some of these guys on here, You will not only have your handset kept alive but also at the same level as some as HTC's flagship devices.
As for recommendation on ROM

You're in the right forum, this is the HTC One XL forum. You can't install official updates on a modified phone. Do you want to install official updates or do you want to install a custom ROM? They are very different methods.

You're in the right forum, this is the HTC One XL forum. You can't install official updates on a modified phone. Do you want to install official updates or do you want to install a custom ROM? They are very different methods.
That isn't true, they aren't identical, the HTC One XL and the HTC One X are completely different phones. Maybe you're thinking of the at&t One X?

Need bootloader details (first 5 lines in bootloader) before we can help at all. This will tell us whether the device is s-on of s-off, SuperCID, hboot version, etc.
Also, do you know how to get into recovery, and what recovery (TWRP or CWM) and version number.
Don't update anything until we tell you to. Its possible to brick the device without proper knowledge at this point.
Ok here are the details you asked:
LOCKED
EVITA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
CID-11111111
HBOOT-1.14.0002
RADIO-0.19SA.32.09.11_2
OpenDSP-v29.1.0.45.0622

And i enter recovery only when i try to update it with official HTC update. Then the ClockWorthMod starts and said that installation is aborted.
I dont know how to enter there without trying to install that update sry...

So it won't go into recovery, when you select recovery from the hboot menu?
Also, you didn't answer timmaaa's question about whether you want to install an official update, or to install a custom ROM.
Oh yes it enter Clokworkmod v5.8.3.1
I would like lastest official update for this phone, but do you guys think that is better solution? Are custom better then official?

Which is "better" is a personal choice, and we can't make that choice for you. Also, there are custom ROMs that are close to stock, but clean of bloatware and with some other optimizations.
Whether you pick official firmware or a custom ROM is up to you. But you are already setup for flashing custom ROMs, so that would just be a matter of picking one (or try a couple) that look good, putting them on the SD and flashing in custom recovery.
The reason your phone will not install the latest official update, is that the OTA needs to have stock recovery to install (and you have custom recovery installed). If you want to be on official firmware, its probably best to find the latest RUU for your carrier, run the RUU. Then OTA to the latest update.
Tnx for everything man, i looked for custom ROM and i decided that might be better then officiall update. It have newest android version and sense 5.0 so i think i am going to use custom.
But all of them are look the same... Can you recommend some good ones because you are experienced on that field and i am total newbie. TNX
I don't know about redpoint but I would say that it all depends on what you want. If you want stock sense 5 att experience go with cleanrom 7. If you want almost every mod imaginable go with viper xl 4.2.0 then there are other roms that are in between. There are 2 stock ROMs as well as one ported ROM. Depends on prefrances. 2 things to know though. If you want sense 5 you need to run 3.18 ruu and upgrade the hboot to 2.15. then get the latest recovery of your choice.

Asking for a ROM recommendation isn't allowed, to say one ROM is better infers that others are inferior in some way. This isn't fair to the devs who spend their spare time bringing us these ROMs free of charge. I know @phonegeekjr has already recommended one but he shouldn't have. It's up to the user to have a look through the ROMs that are available and make a choice.
You do need to run the 3.18 RUU though, and then flash the 2.15 firmware package in order for any Sense 5 ROM to run without signal loss or random reboots.

You want to install the entire 2.15 firmware package to run Sense 5 ROMs, not just upgrade the hboot. Upgrading hboot does close to nothing, at least for potential signal drop and reboot issues on Sense 5 ROMs.

If they all look the same, then you need to read more and understand what the various features mean.
Really, in the time you asked for a recommendation and waited for a response, you could have just flashed a ROM and started trying it out.
