[Q] Best Battery on recent ROM? (AT&T Evita) - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hey Q&A. Looking for a ROM (preferably not Sense-based) that has the maximum battery life.
I've carefully examined all of my applications, as well as tweaked which apps have permission to run in the background, and still only have a maximum of 2 hours screen-on time on the most recent Jellybam ROM version.
I've done all of the batterystats resetting, as well as the 100% to 0%, with no change in battery life.
I'm looking for even a single hour longer battery-wise. Again, though I prefer the AOSP style (as well as CM/JB), Sense is okay.
So which ROMs have the best battery from the start guys? (AT&T HTC One X only please)
Thanks in advance!

I've gotten Sense-ish battery life (maybe a bit worse than ICS Sense ROMs, but better than AOSP ROMs) with AOSP-level performance from this AOSP-themed Desensed JB ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35749360&postcount=517
It's still a Beta, but it's pretty much fully functional, with the exception of recording video - it force closes right now.

Flashed it and for some reason i'm having all sorts of issues. Play store won't download apps, nor will my mobile internet work correctly. Clean flashed (wiped all/system data cache etc) two times, so don't know why.
Gonna give viperXL a try, as it seems to be highly recommended on a few posts I've seen.

Strange, I haven't had anything like that.

make sure to do a full wipe, clear both caches too

Guess you'll just have to try them all until you find what's best for your usage.
Best Rom threads, best battery life threads are not really allowed.

I understand why "best ROM" threads are frowned upon. But as a noob to Android, I find it hard to understand the objective differences between ROMs as there is no such discussion as far as I can tell.

In each persons usage, results can vary wildly from things such as signal loss, a locked up sms app etc.. so it comes down to opinions an that's where issues can arise.
Not trying to be rude to you, or senior members, but that's the law of the mods.

I'm using CM10 nightly Evita build from the 25th i think, and getting on average about 26 hours if battery life. Also have easy battery saver running most of the time, it's actually rather effective. Without it I get about 2 or 3 hours less.

Jellybam gave me the best battery with rohankernel, but as far as gaining the most life out of your device I would stick with Sense and try ViperXl or CleanRom.

my thoughts exactly, plus, have in mind that the very reason for an open source OS, a rooted device, and rom development, is that different people need and want different things out of their device.
cheers.
It differs even with exactly same install for two different answer. There is no combo that would work the same.

Would it be useful to have a thread that posts comparisons for each rom so users can compare key features side-by-side and objectively decide which might suit them best, without having to download and flash every single one?
Things compared could be key distinguishing features, kernels supported, average reported free ram, benchmark scores (controversial I know).
Just a thought
I tried 2-3 roms but atleast i think insertcoin is the best.Very very fast and smooth but best of all the battery life is amazing.

Agreed and I just flashed coredroid 2.3. So far only on complaint battery went down when first flashed.. expected.. but the problem was I plugged in my phone and turn it off then battery would not charge. Too dead to turn on. I got past that and now battery is a lot better have used non stop for about 12 hours and down to 30 percent
Would normally have to charge after about 6 on stock. So no complaints. Also I'm partial to the blue skin

+1 for Coredroid 2.3, although I need to calibrate my battery, I flashed at 60%, when it died, I swapped batteries. So far 41 % left, just over 12 hours with 2+ hours screen on. I get over a day on stock ROM with medium to heavy use on my Anker battery.

It's not just the rom you run its the custom kernal that helps out. I run Virtuous Inquisition 4.01 and I use the Socali 1.2ghz underclocked kernal for better battery life. Even though I do a lot on it I can manage to get about 20 hours on it, lots more if I don't play videos or music.
i just tried almost every rom and i made this result:
battery life:
1. opensensation (latest update)
2. android revolution hd 6.6.3
3. OrDroid 2.2.0
[..]
performance
1. android revolution hd 6.6.3
2. hyper slite insertcoin 5.3.0
3. virtous s4v alpha3
this result are totally objective.. it is just my opinion.. i didnt test elegancia rom out because its not my favor
when i flash in a ROM i will probably take Revoulution 6.6.3 .. seems really stable..
I use ViperS 1.6.3 and BrickedKernel 3.0.36 and the performance is GREAT!!
But it drains battery .... omfg, more than stock
But it's a nice rom and with heavy usage you can use your phone for quite a day... so the balance between battery drain and performance is quite okay, so it is like I think

Me too. Battery life is very short using Pacman v18.0, at most 5 hours. The screen is the process that consumes more battery. Maybe it is only a my problem, but with Fallout v.5 I didn't have this problem (but others :laugh.
Well I find the battery life good on pure CM10.
If it wasnt for the graphics glitches when browsing, it'd be a really good ROM!
I have installed Pacman v18.0 about 3 days ago and am very impressed with the ROM. No problem with battery life but one major problem with the phone randomly going into Sim Lock mode. Could be after 5 minutes, could be after 5 hours and sometimes while just using it.
PACman, way to go.
I'm using Andromadus CM10.1 and battery is good...Overall is good except Bluetooth that doesn't work yet...

For now I'm switching to my sense rom
On the latest build (build 10) of Andromadus 10.1 I found that the bluetooth was fixed!

Thank GOD I got here...
Could someone help me with rom that includes these features?
1. The official ics look (nexus ics)
2. That includes all apps like the sensed ics got. (fM radio, voice recorder, youtube etc)
3. My wifi doesnt turn on when i use any custom rom It just says "Turning on wifi" for the whole day.
4. The settings tab normal (not the tablet type like pacman got)

some people prefer to UV their kernels. Some people don't prefer. Some kernels allow UV, some don't. see it all comes down to preference,of course UV also may cause performance to decrease. so it stills come down to preference.

Hmm, when ppl say try it yourself, it simply means that u would have to flash the rom to know what's best for u.
Everyone uses his/her phone differently, so basicly there is no ideal rom that pleases everyone.
Everyone will you give a different opinion in terms of battery/speed/etc. That's why it is a bit pointless in asking what's the "best rom" for the other person when the usage is different.
So no point having second doubt and just flash the phone, try every single rom, i have flash from sense to cm to ics and now back to gb.
Go ahead and experiment the roms for yourself. Today someone might give u a suggestion, the next day a another. that's why it is consider pointless in asking such question as 'which is the best can u recommend me' and much better to try it for yourself instead of being shortchange in case there is another better than that is being suggested.

TEST TEST TEST TEST TEST and TEST SOME MORE see what works best on your phone
You are asking a question, so this belongs in Q&A.
And there is no answer to this question. No single ROM is going to give battery life to all people. It depends on how you use your phone, as well as other factors (radio reception in your area). There are just too many variables to account for, that a truly objective comparison of battery life between ROMs is virtually impossible. Any claims of battery life are going to be anecdotal at best. You might find some trends. But even so, for every ROM that has people saying they have better battery life, you will find some people that get worse battery life.
In general stock based roms have excellent battery life compared to cyanogen and other custom roms. Ckeanrom or hafka for example has excellent battery life. I'm using rebel rom and the battery life is also excellent.

I have to agree with what people are saying here, there is no one rom which is " better " in battery life it mainly depends on the end user.

Viper XL 1.2.4. w/Beastmode Kernel 3.0 undervolted -50mv ~0.8%/hr drain overnight. Viper XL 2.0 + always was 1.5%/hr or higher, with Beastmode, undervolted 50mv as well. I have tried 2.0, 2.1, 2.4, and 3.1.0 (3.1.0 with stock kernel). All have above 1.5%/hr drain overnight.
Measured using BetterBatteryStats and MyBatteryDrain Analyzer.
All were with the same exact apps.

JB vs ICS battery life

Is it just me, or do the JB ROMs, custom, official, just rooted, etc, get less battery life than the ICS counterparts?
I first had a HOX back in July/August, and used only ICS ROMs. So I have a pretty good deal of experience with it, got about 5.5-6 hours of screen on time every single time.
Now, I noticed a drop in battery life on JB when I had an S3, and just hated the drain. I thought maybe it was just ROM related, and moved onto an iPhone.
Now back onto another One X, and it seems like I still get less battery life than when I had ICS, and I use it the same way.
Has anyone else noticed it?

I dunno, I got 6 hours onscreen last night. Just gotta tune it right. And make maps hibernate. That was eating half the battery.

Your battery is probably depreciating and loosing its full capacity.
Probably not JUST you, but from what I've read and experienced you're in the minority. My battery is definitely better on JB.
I've had much better life on JB, at least since I updated the whole phone (not just a JB rom). I can go almost two days without a full charge.
Hmmm, I'll try a different ROM then. And a JB radio.

I ran the 2.20 ruu then flashed the 3.18 ota. Once on that base, I've been super stable with CleanROM and Elemental kernel.
My work phone (my HOX) is running completely stock (has to, effing government policies...) and has had terrible battery life since updating to JB. It seems to mostly be due to maps sucking me dry, which I presume is from Google Now. Maps is constantly waking my device and using whatever data connection it can get, which is why i presume the Now stuff. not sure, seems to be fine when i turn off WiFi, so it seems that the wifi use on google now is problematic. I factory reset the device but seems to still be running the same. I've been losing almost 10% battery an hour when I leave my wifi on with barely any use of the phone . this was never the case when the phone was on ICS. it's clearly some sort of data connection as it relates to Maps usage as i've been seeing high CPU usage by the app and, at times, nearly 50% of my battery life going to the maps process.
Also, just noticed on BBS that the android OS and maps high battery usage may be due to alarm manager...I'm seeing many long awake times for a number of apps. hadn't noticed it as much before because i had booted the device multiple times today. any thoughts here? i know what this app is for and there's lots of info and complaints out there about this process on other phones in the past, but not much for stock JB on the HOX...
I have had TERRIBLE battery life while running Sense JB ROMs, (seriously, incredibly bad), versus ICS ROMs. Tried nearly every Sense JB ROM that's out there and countless different radios. No idea why I'm having this problem. I'm not having problems with wakelocks BTW
It's maps. I don't have Google now and maps still ate half my battery on JB. Only way to get around it is make maps hibernate I've found, but this requires rooting.

Try Greenify. You need root, but it allows you to stop apps from running in the background. It's not a task killer, which are worse than nothing because they run constantly shutting down apps that keep restarting; rather, it uses system settings to prevent them from starting background at all. You can use it on stuff like Maps if you use another app to convert them to user apps. I've been using it a couple of weeks, and it's worked just great.

Thanks. It definitely seems like Maps is the problem for me. BBS shows a number of maps-based apps with long wake times. I charged up to about 95% before bed last night, and am going to let it run down all the way today to see what happens. Will post some screenshots later, if anyone cares.
EDIT: Nevermind, will probably post this in the BBS thread, unless anyone here really wants it.

Same. 2.5 hrs of screen time vs 3.5 for ICS. Same usage.
Viper JB vs Cleanrom ICS.
Stock everything else (radio, kernal)
maybe not necessarily maps like originally thought, though it's one of the culprits. the mediascanner just happens to hit maps a lot, likely due to it's typically-large cache. check this thread, particularly post #42 and the Google response another 10 posts or so later. sounds like there is definitely an issue with the device indexing and it's the same thing that affected a number android devices. my guess is that some people just dont have a lot of media files (or wipe their phones often enough that they dont accumulate much) and dont see as much of the effect.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=37199
there's also a link at the end of that thread to another similar thread, found here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40370#58

yeah, i'm back on this boat as well. maps still has a long wake time i'm seeing location scanner services running so i'm thinking it's a location-based thing. going to let my phone die today so i can get a good BBS log since i screwed that up yesterday. i'm noticing odd dips in battery life whenever the phone wakes up. it seems to stay awake for up to 10-20 mins, but with the screen off. really weird thing is that when i let it sit overnight, there's no spike (just greater than usual battery drain) but it's when the phone first wakes up that it seems to be really draining and staying awake.

are AOSP/CM roms on par with the Sense 4 roms (like ViperXL, etc.)

hi guys,
I have been running ViperXL for the past one year. However, I have been longing for stock android for a long time. However, the last time I tried CM/AOKP (couple of months back) - the feature set was not on par with Sense 4 ROMS - mainly around driver issues.
For e.g. there were bluetooth problems, HDMI/MHL did not work, battery life was much worse, etc. I was wondering if that has gotten fixed and original android roms are on par with the Sense based roms.
FWIW - I'm not actually worried about the power features like some notification bars, etc. but basically fundamental performance and functional comparisons.
For a long time, AOSP ROMs have had as many/more features than Sense ROMs and everything works just fine. The battery life isn't quite as good, but it's acceptable.

You may try the stable cm10 rom. Its good.
Cm10.1 is good, plus has a new 3.4 kernel, which in your case may not be suitable, unless few little bugs don't bother you a lot.
You can also try sense 5 roms, but then again, no Bluetooth as of now.
Try Rebeless rom. Its based on stock sense4+ but gives you an Aosp feeling.
I hope this helped. :good:
I keep coming back to sense in the end.. Little bugs here and there and the battery life is usually pretty bad. Radio problems are huge. On my college campus many of the rooms have 0 reception, forcing me to toggle airplane mode when I got out of class before I could reconnect to the towers. Caused me to miss a lot of texts and calls...

thats what I'm worried about - my phone is work critical to me. I need to be available on phone, chat, email all the time. Which is why I'm concerned that there is no real replacement for Sense based ROMs in terms of stability and performance. Extra features ? maybe - but that's not what I need.
If you really want to use aosp you could try one of the 4.1 ROMs. In particular, the King Kang ROM by Rohan is awesome. It never missed a beat for me, and had the great customization that aosp offers.

IMHO if your phone is used for work you shouldn't even root it... That's a huge security risk for any data kept on your phone.
I would have a separate phone for work and for rooting.

Not only did I root it, but I was part of the bounty that originally rooted it !
I'm not worried about blowing out my phone - that i can replace.
I just don't want a non performing phone as my daily driver.

If you really want to use aosp you could try one of the 4.1 ROMs. In particular, the King Kang ROM by Rohan is awesome. It never missed a beat for me, and had the great customization that aosp offers.
How much battery life are you getting? Any problems with HDMI out (need it for presentations)

I'm not running that ROM anymore, but from memory depending on use the overall battery time could be towards 20 hours or so. And I think I usually got between 2-3 hours screen on time. Always on mobile data, no WiFi.

Personally I found that battery life was close to double on sense based Roms.
Overall sense Roms feel smoother, and aosp Roms feel faster.
YMMV.
I usually run sense based (viperxl) but get bored and will try aosp randomly . always go back to viper though
Edit: if your looking for a daily driver I would go sense based for sure.

roughly 5 hours screen on and 20+ hours standbye.
but I would rate my usage as medium-heavy.
aosp based. (aokp included) usually get about half of that
But yeah with less usage/screen time my battery would probably last a long time
