I have been having this issue since the JB update (I was running JB leaks before, but am now running game stock, rooted and unlocked JB).
I currently have the paid official Verizon tethering app (I have an unlimited data plan), and had the same issue as well when using FoxFi (paid) and other tethering apps.
Basically, tether will work well for the first few minutes, and then the phone will lose its data connection often enough to make the tethering useless.
Anyone having tether work well for them? This has been bothering me for several months now...

The tether mod is actually included in Beans build 7. I was having tethering problems too on JB but since running build 7 they are completely gone, I get steady and fast connection.
Did you use Foxfi before updating to Jelly Bean? Did it work fine? I noticed that several apps that use the built in hotspot including Verizons paid hotspot gave me the same data connection issues on Ice Cream Sandwich. The app "Power Toggles" enables the phones hotspot feature and had the same problem.
Foxfi updated their app to use the same method that bypasses Verizon and enables the phones hotspot app when using Jelly Bean. (So the Foxfi on ICS is very different than on JB) It seems that any app including verizons app that uses the built in hotspot has the data connection issue for me. It's perfect for a couple minutes than drops for a minute.
I'm worried that if I upgrade my phone to Jelly Bean, Foxfi will drop my connection as it did with Power Toggles and all other apps that enable the phones hotspot.

I've had the same issue with 4G data dropping using the hotspot and it appears worse since the JB update on my Verizon S3. Interesting enough, I have no issues using the tethering option via Bluetooth.
Note my phone is stock, not rooted.
FoxFi used to help (I'm paying for unlimited tethering) but since the JB update it doesn't matter. In fact, when I reinstalled FoxFi and turned on the hotspot via the app, the Verizon hotspot app also starts. This never happened before but appears to have happened since the JB upgrade.
I read in another forum to try turning off WPA2-PSK security all together and turn on Open. I've just tested that and it appears to not kill the 4G connection. I did turn on only connect to allowed devices... It's easy to add them by turning that option off with just "open", then add the device(s) by selecting the "+" to the right of the device so they are then listed in the "approved" section. Then turn back on "only allowed devices".
I have not tested the WPA-PSK encryption to see if it drops (yet).
I don't particularly care to run an open network with no encryption as any packet sniffer can pick up plain text (although browser encryption keeps secure sites secure) and allowing only certain devices works off the MAC address, so it's "relatively" secure. And by relatively I mean not greatly secure because a techhead can spoof their MAC address. But since it's a phone, my hotspot isn't always on...
I also need to test running a tablet along with my PC to see if the 4G drops or not.
Some other notes with the problems I'm having:
- The phone doesn't drop signal. Test programs show the signal connection constant. The mobile data simply turns off on the phone and pops off and on,,,
- I had this same issue with my HTC Thunderbolt. This leads me to believe it's a Verizon problem, but since the open option is appearing to work, that doesn't seem 100% true.
- Bluetooth tethering is fairly solid. Minimal drops, but Bluetooth doesn't appear to be quite as good as passing data as WiFi.I don't have bandwidth specs handy
- Since going to open/limited approved devices I'm streaming video in the background on Chrome browser and also surfing XDA at the same time with (fingers crossed) no 4G drop,
- After changing to open on the hotspot, I did shutdown and reboot the phone.
Let me know if this helps your situation.
UPDATE: Well after all that, I added my Nexus 7 to the hotspot and within seconds it dropped 4G data. Now it's dropping periodically even with the Nexus off and just the PC connected. So I dropped it back to completely open not limiting devices and it appears to be not dropping. Buggy PITA!
UPDATE #2: Just got off the phone with Verizon Tech Support. This is apparently a known problem with ICS on this device and they are working on an update. They offered me a replacement phone but I bought this new and do not want a refurb, so I declined. They then suggested a SIM card replacement as this is where all the info is used for security to/from the network and if the SIM card does not fully fix, then a factory reset and reinstall of all programs (which I knew was coming).

Thank you for the informative post. You've done a lot of the work for me. This is unfortunately what I expected. The hotspot feature in general seems to be bugged on the S3. My phone is rooted and the use of "Wifi Tether" seems to keep a constant but horrible connection. I tried a few other root wifi tether apps with the same issues. I'm not sure what methods are used by the apps but my connection speed with Foxfi is 15-20 Mbps where it's only 4-6 Mbps with Wifi Tether at the same time. I would love to use bluetooth but in my case I'm bridging the wireless connection with my router for the rest of the home network. Keep us updated on anything else you discover. Thus far, Foxfi has worked perfect on ICS with little to no drops. Sadly no other app has proven the same. I stream Netflix in HD and a decent connection is required.
EDIT: I would be curious to know if any of the custom JB roms have a smooth working wifi tethering app. I know that several have tethering baked in OTB but do they suffer from the same problem we've mentioned here?
On Unlimited data unpaid I used stock Verizon 4G Hotspot on stock deodexed rom all Christmas weekend tethered to my laptop and fast charging via USB with ZIGGY's latest kernel. Only time I lost connection is if I left it idle for a prolonged time. Worked great and could not tell any difference from my 18 MB DSL line although I did not do speed tests. It also maintained 100% charge regardless of laptop usage. Charged faster than I could use it. Only power connection was laptop connected to wall. Phone remained tethered to laptop via USB. One Power connection/one wireless connection. Works for me.
Yes, definitely don't upgrade to JB. I'd also be interested to see if the issue is better on other JB ROMs.
I actually got a good tech on the phone that admitted there was a software issue with JB which is why they offered a replacement. They also suggested I contact Samsung which I may do.

And why is that. I'm running Stock JB with no problem although I have never excepted an OTA. Actually have never seen an OTA in years since they have always been blocked. That is phone hack rule #1. Never had to return a device.
I was referring to only the Wifi hotspot program. I have no issues with direct USB or Bluetooth tether. Just the hotspot which the Verizon Tech admitted has an issue with JB on the S3.
I'm running straight stock, no root. If I was running anything else I wouldn't accept an OTA either.

Honestly, I don't recall if I used it much while still on ICS. I do know that it was working pretty well on my RAZR Maxx on ICS before switching to the S3; I didn't use it much on the S3 bc I no longer had a tablet at that time...

This is like moving the thread to the trash bin. We're having a general discussion about an issue with the Galaxy S3. It's not just a Q&A....
Try TrevE Mod
Try this forum if you haven't. Works fast and flawlessly for my on Jelly Beans ROM.

So, is there a fix in the works via Verizon/Samsung? Especially since I'm paying for this service, I would rather not go through the trouble of hacking my phone to get it to work. I appreciate the fix thread being posted above, and don't feel uncomfortable doing it, but the purpose of this thread is not only for people who feel comfortable hacking their phones to get this to work, but also for those that don't desire to spend the time screwing with their phone and/or have no desire doing it. Let's keep this discussion going.

I agree. Mods, I respectfully request that this be moved back to the general discussion section; this is not merely a question, but a discussion of a problem that seems to affect a decent number of users attempting to tether consistently. Thank you.

Hey guys,
This morning Google released the 2.3.6 update for my I9020T Nexus S over Mobilicity's network and I was wondering if this 2.3.6 update was affected by not being able to tether. This is currently my major concern as I tether a lot.
Does anyone know if that 2.3.6 tethering bug that was reported on the I9020A when they first got it also affects the I9020T phones too or Google has pulled the update on I9020A and I9020T and re-released it?
Right now my phone wants me to update to 2.3.6 but I want to make sure that I still have tethering if i do so.
Thanks,
deltatux
Its not a bug. Carriers want to charge for that feature. I'm sure someone will make a tethering fix just like bugless Pete did for the 2.3.5 update. That one might even work already.

I have the I9029T on t-mobile and I updated to 2.3.6 today. My wifi tethering wasn't working right away and I almost freaked out because I use this feature all the time. Thankfully it was easily fixed...
I have the security enabled for the wifi tethering and for some reason after the update the password in my phone changed by itself. I just changed it back to what it was and it worked again. If for some reason you cant remember your password and your computer is automatically set to connect to the tethering.. Right click on Android AP in the comp, click properties and change the network security key (password) from there as well... Now all is good in the world of tethering.

Really eh? I guess for Mobilicity it's even better, I just updated to 2.3.6 after scouring upon heaps of irrelevant results on Google and found some relevant from Android Central and Android Police where people reported that it works. So I tried it, flashed it to 2.3.6 and instantly, tethering works with no workarounds required. I noticed that AWS signal with my carrier improved a bit.
Thanks guys,

Hello,
since the last FOTA update from HTC to 1.45.403 (Android 2.3.4) I can no longer connect WLAN devices to the internet via WiFi-Hotspot on my HTC Sensation!
Before that update it worked.
The devices (tried it out with a Samsung TV and the original WiFi-stick connected and a WD multimedia box, both worked flawlessly before) successfully find the Sensation's AP, successfully connect to it and also the DHCP test succeeds.
However no internet connection then works.
Did anyone of you experience the same?
Could it be that this FOTA update sent by HTC now requires some software token to be sent by your mobile operator enabling WiFi tethering, hence defaulting tethering via firmware to "disable"?
Mobile operators do not like tethering, but they cannot detect (and consequently block) it easily - unless (just my speculation, no idea if this is the reason, why it won't work anymore) HTC would change WiFi tethering and internet sharing via 3G to default off on software level.
I have to mention that I have an unbranded HTC Sensation without any operator-specific software and the update did not come from the operator but from HTC.
(Or at least that's what I saw.)
Any advice ?
Thanks in advance.
Correction:
Software version is: 1.45.401.3
Have you tried using different security settings for the WiFi hotspott? Go to settings\wireless & networks\Portable WiFi hotspot settings. You have three settings WEP 128, WAP (TKIP), and WPA2 (AES). Mine is set to WPA2 (AES).
Problem is that it does not even work with security settings switched off
I really feel lost.
Could it be that other apps interfere?
But I'd rather doubt.
If you are using the WiFi Hotspot app that came preinstalled on the sensation from tmobile and you dont have a "Tethering Data Plan" they will eventually figure you out and block the app from working.... I found this out myself and had to go ask the nice lady at the Tmobile store why it happened... and that's why.
I can verify that at a certain point of data usage tmous will cut off wifi tethering. They can tell the data is being shared n want u to pay monthly for the service. Found out from a Friend who is a tmo employee.
Although I'm still tethering free for the time being..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Mine does that too now, any way around it
I could be off on this, I work at TMO and I know the Amaze and GSII shipped with the ''latest'' SIM cards, which we were told had to be used for WiFi calling to work correctly, but oddly enough thats when I noticed tethering quit working on all out demo's
Works flawlessly with CM7 for me.
Actually today and yesterday works just fine for me.... so i dont know why it did the one day but no problems now..... wierd
my branded sensation stopped wifi tethering 2 days ago and i just tried and its is working now... Kinda weird i gurss . . Maybe it was because i used 5.46gb of data this month....?

Hey Yall, long time XDA follower and user (HTC Shadow2007), first time "really" posting.
I, for the love of GOD, cannot find out just why I'm not able to use any of my rom's built in tethering for my T-Mobile branded Sensation 4G. I been reading up on T-Mobile US's hidden APN on their network which disable's certain traffics. (Yes I know about spoofing UA Strings for desktops/laptops but this seems to be different, like they are disabling my connection to the PS3 only. In other words, it will find the AP (not ad-hoc) and but not allow for an internet connection.
Lately, I've been switching between CM9 stable(main) and Elegancis (Blitz_3.0.0) roms. I haven't superCID'd but I didn't think that it would've mattered because I don't think that I'm using an non-T-Mobile US build (it wouldn't work either way).
I wanted to stick it CM9 but for whatever reason it would allow me to update some market apps so for that reason and well as the tethering issue I've switched to Blitz's rom.
My kernel version may actually be outdated (even thought I don't think so)

The first flashing that I did was Revolutionary HD 6.6.7 (i think). It worked fine but had problems as well (not perfect ). I want to change my data plan to the T-Mobile nationwide unlimited 4G plan and save me $35 buck a month to tether my PS3 to my phone. (I can do it now.) To test to see if the rom would allow me access to tethering to my PS3, I switched my wife's sim card and mine to simulate the plan and the phone without having the plan active on my account and it's a no go. I switch the sim cards back, it works just fine. Now she can tether via her phone and via mine (if sim cards are switched) to multiple computers and to the wii.
IF ANYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO HELP, PLEASE PLEASE DO! :crying:

Well it worked one time a week ago with my wife's sim with WPA2. Since then I had already reverted back to CM9 which was my main rom until ... yesterday when I went through the process of putting all the applications from titanium backup on blitz's rom. I was going to change my plan till tomorrow from the $65 10GB tethering (before work discounts) to the $30 Unlimited Internet (before work discounts). I can try it with it being "open" later today but, i honestly don't think that its the problem because when I use my SIM card (the one with tethering enabled by T-Mobile) it connects with or without encryption.
Any ideas? Any roms that you know of that have wifi hotspot (not ad-hoc only) enabled by default? I looked into Grogg88 solution but, at this time it looks to be enabled in Elegancis' roms now anyway or am I missing something?!

Hi,
I have always tethered my tablet to my phone.
It worked both open and secure on Sense ROMS.
When I switched to CM 10, I could only connect with open. (but ,at least it works, which is all I care about )
I have not tried anything like a PS3,so ,I do not know what else to suggest.
Have you tried an app from the market?
I think "Barnacle" is good.

I understand! I have tried barnacle, wifi tether beta 3.2 (having trouble even getting to work), um... foxfi with and without additional supplimentary application, none of those actually give an Access Point, none ad-hoc (which the PS3 can only connect to). Hell I even have try usb to computer tethering (via bluetooth, wifi, and wired connections), create a computer "MiFi" hotspot and tried to get my PS3 to connect to that Access Point to no avail. Like I said though, all is good with my sim card but if I use my wife's which has Unlimited Nationwide 4G data service to test her data feature on my phone, past that 1st time I tried it with Blitz's rom last week... and the 2nd/last time I tried... this morning... its a no go.
I don't know what they are blocking my PS3... can they see its MAC address!? I can't imagine that the can really "see" it? Everything else works just fine on her phone tethering to it. Desktops, laptops, tablets,.... my 4 year old son's wii! IDk
I just want to not worry about data shortages (going over 10GB limit) and play Borderlands 2.... GOD IS THAT SO WRONG.
PS. I'm switching home internet providing... that one I had sucked (great speeds60mbps, too high $65-70monthly)... but I'm waiting for a deal in the area.
I'll try open though later. If you know anyone else to ask... tell them to please come to this thread!
You know something? I love how you posted this in 2 separate forums . Next time don't double post.

Funny... I think I did know that..... You sir/ma'am are a genius! :highfive:
Look instead of "worrying" about 2x posts from someone actually looking for some help for normally helpful ppl... just go do something else! You took time out of your "busy" day just to insert that stupid comment and THEN NOT EVEN HELP. I did what I did because I can't post in the Dev forum because of the 10 post rule... Please again if you're not going to help, just in general, don't reply to people's posts just to flame...
Hello I was wondering this tablet can connect to ad hoc tethering yet? Is there a wpa supplicant file someone could point me to because I couldn't find anything while searching. Thank you.

Easy solution, to which no root is needed, is to install FoxFi on your phone. They removed it from marketplace. Just Google for the apk. Install it on your phone. Then install the add on that's in the marketplace. Works flawlessly for me. I had same issue where newer ICS and JB builds on my nexus 7 and note 10.1 wouldn't recognize the old wifi tether app, which used ad hoc tethering and needed root on phones. I've used Foxfi on my old Atrix phone and worked. Tablet picked it right up. Now I have my new Samsung Galaxy S3, which is completely stock. Installed foxfi on that also. Now I can tether my 4g LTE speeds to all my tablets with no issue. No root was needed on phone. App works great on stock phone. Its likely your phone is supported if its a decent/popular android phone.
I don't thinknthe supplicant file method will work on the note. I know I tried it on ly nexus 7 and didn't work. FoxFi solved everything
Supported stock no root.I use my tab more 10.1 connected to cell all the time.
Supported out of box

I think its more so, what particular app people are using to make the ad hoc tethering connection attempt. As people have been reporting not being able to connect. I know, on my older rooted atrix, the tablet wouldn't see the connection using the old tried and proven Wireless tethering app. FoxFi solved the issue for me. I think people that have paid hotspots feature on their phone can get it to work out the box(may be wrong). But alot of others, not just this tablet alone(prime, nexus 7, etc..) have had issues getting ad hoc tethering to work since newer builds of ICS. On prime, we used an alternate wifi supplicant file to get it to work. But later updates caused that to not even work anymore.

Funny you mention that. As I have the old unlimited data plan on VZW I had to spring for the additional hotspot charge to tether my S3. Worked great for a couple weeks then stopped. "Saw" the phone but couldn't lock on an IP. Before the last update. Both phone and tab were rooted stock at the time. Staff at VZW shop had no idea why. Figured I'd ask to not give any cause to jeopardize my plan. That said, FoxFi works great!
Weird.
confirmed working for me..
Foxfi running on papasmuffs CM9 HTC EVO build..
using 'Pdanet Tablet' on the Asus Transformer stock rooted .27
Thanks for the thread as was going nuts playing with the old tether program..

Only other thing I can think of is to try using the wireless tethering app. But instead of wifi, choose Bluetooth tethering in options. Its not as fast as wifi but still good for normal usage. Any connection is better than none I was using Bluetooth tethering for a while until I found solution.
Hello there,
I'm pulling this post back from the depth of the forum to ask if there is any news on this front... Foxfi is not working on my phone (motorola Defy), and neither is Wifi Tether. Bluetooth tethering (via PDAnet for example) works but is extremely slow...
Would you have a suggestion either for an android wifi tethering program that supports interface mode, or about a way to add support for ad-hoc wifi in the note 10.1 ?
Many thanks.
Hello
I live in the UK and am considering importing this phone (there aren't any recent slide-keyboard phones over here)
BUT is it possible to use this as a wifi hotspot? So I can tether my other devices to it?
This is very important for me but I understand that US carriers are a lot more locked-down than over here so I wonder if they've taken the function out.
Also, while I'm here, is it possible to use the bluetooth WHILE it's acting as a wifi tether? For bluetooth earphones, etc. My current phone (an aging Xperia mini pro) won't let me use both at the same time
Under the stock ROMs, you have to use a patch to enable wifi tethering. Under CM WiFi tethering works out of the box.
You can technically use wifi tethering and bluetooth at the same time, but it's not wise, at least under CM. There's some struggle right now to get 2.4Ghz WiFi and bluetooth to work at the same time under CM10.2. When both are enabled, neither run well.
The stock ROM offers USB and Wi-Fi tethering, at least on T-Mobile US; there's a "T-Mobile Hotspot" app baked-in. I haven't tried to use the hotspot with other networks, though.
Also, the T-Mobile hotspot didn't play nice with my ThinkPad T61/Intel 4965AGN combo on 32-bit Windows 7. It would never fully connect, and I actually managed to bluescreen Windows several times before giving up and using USB tethering. The same machine worked fine with Wi-Fi tethering on Linux Mint 14.
I tether my work laptop when on the go with my Relay all the time, under CM10.2. Works quite well.

If you buy this phone - do it it's great - you should at least upgrade it to CM10.2 and get rid of that T-Mobile bloatware.
Just my 2 cents
