Can any Rom be used on a rooted device. - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
I'm a newbie @ this. Can any custom Rom be used on a rooted device? I use a sensation and its already rooted. I use a custom rom, but I want to try a new one (viperS 1.5.2).
Any help would be appreciated.

HTC Sensation.

Any ROM developed for your device should work. Rooting isn't necessarily needed to change your ROM either. Rooting just gets you root access; you can use software to install a ROM without first rooting.

No, generally you can install ROM's based off of Stock ROMs but only specific to your device (or very near, ARC vs ARC S for example)
Custom ROM's usually require you to H-OFF / Unlock your bootloader

Thanks for all the help

Done that (Tmobile Stock 2.3.3 rooted) but to no avail

I think he means, you need recovery as it was PRE-ClockworkMod. Any threads?
(correct me if I'm wrong)
Then that's a different matter altogether. Will need to figure that out. Does that involve unrooting the device after recovery?

I'm going to do this tomorrow to update. It should work.
So did it work
- Backup everything using CWM and Titanium Backup.
- Install the RUU to get back to Stock Recovery. (You'll loose all settings/apps/SMS/etc..)
- Install your OTA update.
- Restore everything using Titanium Backup.
This should work for any of you who has CWM Recovery. If you already have Stock Recovery, then you're ready to go. You don't need to flash a new rom by the RUU.
It's not the root that is causing the problem, it is the CWM Recovery.
Keep in mind, flashing a RUU may brick your device, I take no responsibilities of any damage that may be caused to your device
I just discovered a new method, tried it and it worked.
Take a look at this.

Return to Stock

I'll tell you briefly my experience
I bought an unbranded HTC One S online. When it arrived I was surprised to find that it was T-Mobile branded (european version). So I sent it back asking for a no brand one, which arrived 1 week later. When I turned it on (it was half-charged) I found this written:
"this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside htc with out htc write permission failure to comply my lead to legal action"
I checked the bootloader and found it was unlocked.
I think they sent me back my T-Mobile one unlocked with a stock rom.
1) How did they remove T-Mobile brand?
2) How can I see if my phone is rooted?
3) Can I receive OTA upgrade even if the bootloader is unlocked?
4) Is it possible to return to unbranded stock with locked bootloader and no root permissions (as an original unbranded phone)?
thanks
They prob rooted and debloated all the stuff on there removing all them apps many Roms have the option for this when installing them. To check if your rooted there is an app called root checker in app store download that. U can return to stock debloated by running ruu and u will have to get the tmobile ruu and specific country but it is de bloated and yea u can do the original HTC updates If your still on stock I don't know if u have to lock bootloader tho personally I think u should get custom Rom because a lot more customisation and Developers build their Roms around the latest HTC updates

Root reason, If you want to try sense 5 experience before stock one coming (who knows when it gets released), custom rom with sense 5 will do, you need to root it and no need s-off as s-on can still flash some custom roms. You are able to use apps with root function and if you don't want or don't like to take much time to read many threads before doing anything to your phone, just use stock one without root.
Here are the steps what you need to learn for root with flashing custom roms if necessary for u : unlock your boot loader via htcdev.com> flash custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), flash custom roms (many steps for flashing method).
if you think you are not sure what will you do to your phone, try stay safe with stock one and no one responsible for your own work on your device if something happen accidentally.
Just my two cent and if this could give you some idea, press thank button for my writing time here.
do a search in this forum to see if someone else has asked same question on how to go to stock.

I already rooted my device and flashing custom Rom now and I'm satisfied with the sense 5 experience Rom. If you don't have more experience on rooting or flashing..etc and u don't like to do research, better stay on stock.

It doesn't have to be AT&T and/or stock. Any Sense ROM should do. Its just AOSP ROMs that for some reason have trouble with unlocking the SIM.
All ROMs (stock or otherwise) and just about anything else you will every need for this device can be found in my Index thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
It has CM 11, Kitkat.
