There are plenty of remote desktop programs like splashtop, but that's clunky and overkill if you only need files. I would recommend dropbox or google drive for files. Then you don;t have to keep your desktop on and you only sync the files you want from remote. If you want an invite to dropbox, PM me with your email address.

Thx Digital for the response. I was just reading up on splashtop & teamviewer. I didn't want anything clunky just for accessing files - appreciate you confirming something like dropbox would work. Would dropbox be a better option than a traditional FTP?

For me it is. Its cloud storage and its easy as pie to use. That way you can get the files you need from any computer, tab, smartphone. etc.
I think as a Samsung owner, you get extra free storage when you install it on your tab. Its a lot easier than google drive

I am looking for an app that will let me use my Lumia to connect to the shared folders on my home PC while connected to my home network via WiFi. I want to be able to connect as my PC user account, browse to a UNC path (e.g. "\\DESKTOP-PC\Pictures"), and download/transfer files from the PC to my phone... all without the need for any server software or additional setup on the PC.
I see the "ShareFolder" app in the marketplace (for $2.50), but there is no trial, and few reviews. Does anyone know if that app will suit my needs (one review makes me believe it won't, but the description indicates it will)? Or can anyone recommend a solution?
Thanks very much for reading!
Depends on how much space you need to have for "sharing" and what you need to do. The ShareFolder app can let you look at pictures, but you cant open any other file types on your phone. Not very useful.
I highly recommend using SkyDrive, as now they have a Desktop Folder, just like Dropbox, and then your computer doesn't even need to be on. But space is not huge....
The SkyDrive app is free but there are other apps for SkyDrive
Or, if you don't want to bother with a SkyDrive folder on your desktop, you can check out Allway Sync - it runs off your computer and automatically syncs your specified folders just about anywhere, including SkyDrive. I have the Pro Version and LOVE it!
Otherwise, you have to pay for a "big" cloud space or run a server off your puter, as far as I know.

I find 25Gb to be spacious enough for the content I host on there, really.
As you all know, skydrive and WP7 sync pretty well together. Everyone is happy with their 25gb storage (or 7 if ur new).
But when u go to skydrive website, u can also view the computers that are currently turned on and sharing files online (its on the bottom left corner)
it comes online when u install the skydrive client on your computer.
So my question is... how come we dont have an app that can access that yet? The whole computer folder is ONLINE, you can access any files within as long as the computer is switched on, ie. acting as a server.
Imagine instead of 25gb, u have access to ur entire computer drive and u can stream music and video off that like the skyrdrive app. We wouldnt be restricted to 25gb, (im sure a lot of peoples music and video folders are in terrabytes) and we can connect where ever we go if we have 3G connection.
Maybe its because the API hasnt been released yet but .... i think this is something MS or developers should be working towards.
That's a really good idea! Until someone develops such an app, we can access skydrive website from WP and click on "PC site" and voila! You can access your PC! And the speed of the PC site is also fast
Yea but i want to stream music / video with an app it would be soooo convenient
I have a desktop that i leave it on as server anyways, so might as well.
this is the function in skydrive
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/skydrive/fetch-files-pc-ui
I am sorry, what?
I am not sure I am getting your point.
-there's a windows program that allows you to sync a local folder to skydrive - check
-there's a WP7 app that allows you to access files on your skydrive - check
-as far as I am aware, you can also stream music and movies off skydrive to your WP7 (I haven't checked or tried yet, though It works with both movies and music).
So, what is it you're looking for?
EDIT: If you're looking for a sync option from skydrive to your phone, how would that work? Your skydrive is 25Gb, WP7 phones have 16Gb max. So you can't simply sync your skydrive to your phone...
EDIT2: I think I figured out what you're looking for. You're looking for a way to access not your skydrive, but your computer from your phone. The feature you describe is a feature of the skydrive website that allows you to remotely upload files from your (running) computer. I vaguely recall seeing apps on the marketplace that would allow such a thing. I'll have to check, though...
EDIT3: A possible sollution would be to set up a TVersity Server on your PC. You can then stream music and video to appropriate clients, for WP7 there's an app called MyMedia WP7.
Note that you'll need to know how to access your TVersity Server from outside your LAN (How to make your PC connectable from the internet). Not the easiest sollution, but then again, the problem you have is very... specific, it's not a general use case.
EDIT4 (I am really good at this aren't I? ): possible alternatives would be the app called "Qloud Media" and Plex, each app requires it's own server software, though.
yep i have tried all those apps u said. I also found another one called Tonido, works ok well but im hoping for some developer to utilize the skydrives full potential (ie. the fetch file) instead of installing another desktop program to allow connection
tversity current dont offer free accounts
I have been playing around with the SkyDrive API the last few months, and I don't believe there is an official "Microsoft-blessed" way to do this via the API.
Why hallo thare!
As you see in my signature I have a Gnote and a Asus Infinity and my home PC is a MSI GX740 with Windows 7. My idea is that I want to sync some folders so they look all the same on all three devices. The method would be when they all are connected to my home Wifi they shall sync a certain folder. Another neat thing is that everytime I get home and connect my phone or tablet to my Wifi it shall upload the DCIM/Camera dir to my PC so I dont have to mess with that
Is this possible?
Thanx in advance

For sure it's possible, but why not give a chance to e.g. a dropbox. It gives all functionality you ask for, with uploading camera pics directly to dropbox folder on my lap, all folders in dropbox synced in all my units

I was looking for something similar and decide to use box.net as backup/sync tool.. Whenever I do something in one of the folders stored in box, it automatically syncs to the cloud. Then when I use the box app in my tablet, phone or desktop, all the files are synced.
I read somewhere about auto upload photos, but not sure if it was with box.net or dropbox.
hope this helps

Photo sync (camera upload) from a phone works in dropbox, and you have to choose an option whether any data connection or wifi only.
Try Sugarsync.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
Faced with a similar need, I worked with a family member in another city to set up a private "Cloud" using FTP. I back my files up to his system, he backs his up to mine.
The PC apps are Filezilla server and client for the FTP functions. SyncBack is an automated backup/sync program. Those take care of PC to PC transfers and syncs.
The android app I chose is FolderSync.
Try GammaSync
For PC-to-Android folder synchronization (only one-way at the moment) I developed a free app which does not require external cloud storage services (like Dropbox or SugarSync). Check GammaSync. It's available on the Play Store. Maybe you'll find it useful
For any feedback:

FolderSync does exactly what you're looking for and does it well!
Does anyone know an app that I can use to take notes on my Nexus 7, have them save to my Google Drive so that I can open them on my Mac, and my Nexus?
It woud be a bonus if I can open/edit them on my iPhone as well, but thats not a requirement.
I looked into Evernote, but for offline use they charge $45/yr.
No one has any ideas?
Is there a reason the Google Drive app won't work for you? You can create docs with that directly in Google Drive. If you're after an offline solution then you need to explain what you want more as there's obviously no offline sync solution.

Yes an offline solution is what I would be hoping for. If there was an App that i could launch, type up what I need and then when I save wrote to a local folder saved on my google drive then when I am back in WiFi range that file would hit the cloud and then sync to my Home desktop. That way I dont have to worry about online or offline.
Flick Note?
Okay, scratch that... Flick Note is Simplenote syncing.
Hit the "make available offline" button in Drive ?
Use an offline text-editor, save it, should sync ?
I've never tried it, I'd have to give it a shot.

While this will work, its does not allow for "Creating New Documents"..
Plus, not sure if just any text-editor will be able to read the Google Doc formats.
A basic document created from within Google Drive/Docs has the file format of .gdoc
Enabling "Offline" access, might convert the file to a standard .doc format, but I don't know for sure.
I can easily attach a PDF to a draft gmail from drive using my galaxy nexus on 4.3 android. I can no longer do this since upgrading to the nexus 5?
I click attach in gmail, browse to drive, but my PDFs are now all greyed out on this new phone. Only images allowed. I really need this functionality. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same issue. You can't attach any thing other than images from a cloud service like Google drive using the Gmail app. Attaching local files that are on the phone works. This new integration with Drive has broken this.
Thanks for replying Kayno. I wasn't sure if it was just me doing something wrong.
A workaround is to open the PDF using drive and then save it to the phone, them use a file manager to attach it.
It was much easier to attach direct from drive though. Hopefully the app developers are on it.

Hope they fix it as I do like the new file picker integrated within gmail but that's no good if we cant attach any files other than images and videos.
Another work around is to attach your drive account to a file manager like Solid Explorer which works very well with all cloud accounts like Box, drive and dropbox. Save your file from there to your phone and then share it as a gmail attachment. I know this is also not ideal
