I've bought a Digitazz MHL To HDMI Adapter, but no mater which ROM I try, no matter whether I try to connect my Sensation to my laptop or my TV......nothing happens.
I don't get any notification on the phone, nothing on the TV...arghhh, the frustration.
I know the HDMI cable i'm using is fine, as links up to my freeview box ok, blu-ray player ok and my TV.
Phone is plugged in and show as charging when my phone is linked up to TV.....tried retarting phone, different Sense 3.6 Roms etc..nothing is working.
Am I not doing something, or it it prob just a case of cheap rubbish MHL to HDMI adapter I bought?
Just HTC versions of the adapter work?
any Ideas...be very much appreciated as i've tried everything.
cheers
Matt
Attached pics of the MHL to HDMI I'm using.
I used 2 types of non htc adapters, both worked.
What power supply did you connect to the adapter? I think only 1a 5v will work for mhl..

In some roms HDMI will not work. Look in change log it will tell you if it's working or not. Usually its written in BUGS section. Check your current Rom to see if it's supported . If I remember correctly most don't work but you need to check and see if that could be the issue.

MHL works on all the largely adopted roms, elegancia, ARHD etc.
Also, it's more a kernel thing than a rom actually.
The OP mentioned a couple of roms were tested. perhaps it would benefit the test to add stock as well just in case?

I'm also struggling with MHL on my Sensation. After searching the internet, the few tips I picked up that worked for others are:
1. You need to plug in power via the extra micro-USB port on the MHL adapter. Some have said that it needs a high-current power source (1A) which the HTC charger produces. 3rd party USB chargers sometimes output a lower current which some people find causes their MHL not to work. Also, using MHL seems to drain battery pretty quick and you need a high-amp power source to keep the phone charged or prevent it from draining too quickly.
2. If it is the first time using MHL, try plugging in the MHL(USB) to the phone then rebooting the phone. This is supposed to make your phone recognize and "activate" the MHL/HDMI capability(?).
3. I also read about playing around with TV settings. For one user with a Sony Bravia TV, he had to go to the tv settings -> external inputs -> HDMI and turn off HDMI device control or something.
4. Not all Sensation ROMs support MHL, for example CyanogenMod.
In my case, I bought a 3rd party MHL adapter and it didn't work the first time even with power connected to MHL. Then after (2) above, I finally saw the HDMI logo appear on the notification bar and it worked pretty well in my first 10mins of experimenting...nice picture with sound too. Then I tried playing another video and this time there was no sound from the TV. So I unplugged and reconnected the MHL connector from my phone and ever since then I have not been able to get MHL to work I'm using ARHD 3.6.1 ROM so I'm not sure if that is the problem. Still looking for solutions...
You might want to make sure that your TV actually supports MHL as not all do. I can't see how a laptop would support it, most don't even have a HDMI input?
The most trouble I've ever had with MHL is the sound sometimes doesn't work, but just unplugging then replugging the phone cures this.

I finally managed to solve my MHL problem by flashing ARHD 3.6.8 ROM...so in my case it seemed to be the ROM version that didn't work well with MHL. It mirrors my phone screen pretty well although Sensation resolution is quarter-HD so on my HD TV the picture is less sharp, but acceptable.

I have this same problem, my adapter works and shows on my phone that it connected but my TV does not support MHL as only certain TV's actually support this standard, and oh plus that fact that my current ROM doesnt support it
My Laptop has a HDMI connection and so does my HD TV....but didn't know the TV had to support MHL....I just thought it was a case of if it's a HD TV, with HDMI connections, then it would work?
Hmmm....I'm not getting ANYTHING in my notification area on my phone either though.
Gonna try some of these suggestions and will report back.
Ps: As far as Chargers and power sources etc...all mine are HTC Genuine ones.
Thanks for help guys....will be back soon, coz i'm off to experiment..hehe:laugh:

Hope all goes well in your test's, My process was to power up the adapter first using my genuine htc charger first then plus in the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV then plug the adapter into the phone last. If it does not show up on the phone notification bar to begin with restart your phone with it all still plugged in failing all of that then time for a new ROM and kernel probably Good luck

Cheers for reply, but tried differerent Roms and kernels...nothing happening.
I give up.
Matt
I've got a similar problem where not matter what ICS ROM or kernel I used it wouldn't work.
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31797423&postcount=17)
However, in my case, it works fine with GB connected to a Sharp TV, but for some reason not ICS!
It also works fine with ICS connected to other TVs (tested on Samsung and LG) and on a PC monitor (through HDMI to DVI cable).
Just not with the Sharp TV!
Very frustrating!
hey guys, i have been trying to get this to work but all to no avail have tried the suggestions, all of the kernels i can find ect but i am just not having any luck. i am also not having any joy with usb-otg. could the 2 be linked?
Just a couple of thoughts. I've only skimmed the thread so I apologise if I'm repeating something mentioned earlier.
I can confirm that NRG's current EnergyROM which features a stock kernel and Sense 3.6 works with MHL (at the moment MHL doesn't work on any Sense 4 ROMs as far as I'm aware).
Also, I recently visited my folks and tried to show off some photos on their TV. For some reason MHL would only work on ONE of its four HDMI ports. I didn't have the time to figure out why, but there you go. Maybe those having difficulties could visit a tv shop and try plugging their phone into a variety of tvs for troubleshooting purposes.
Other things to note: On some TVs my MHL connection works at 720p and 60hz (which is good). On others it runs at 1080i at 24hz which makes for a crappy experience (jerky).
ICS ROMs have greatly improved performance when using MHL so steer clear of gingerbread.
MIUI ROMs should also support MHL (I've tried a couple).
Finally, I sometimes use a battery pack that I bought via Amazon to power the MHL connection when I'm out and about. If you decide to experiment this way, make sure you buy an external battery that has a 1 amp output per USB port.
I'm typing this with a bluetooth keyboard while my phone is connected to my tv, so it can work : ) I bought this MHL adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/FoneM8-MHL-Cable-microUSB-HDMI/dp/B0060Z8CYK

I've only tried USB on the go once, using a dedicated USB on the go cable for a Galaxy SII and a small externally powered four port hub in conjunction with Sebsatian FM's kernel and the most recent EnergyROM. I was able to browse a flash drive and connect a wireless keyboard and mouse. I couldn't really see the point as you can't use MHL at the same time, and you have to provide external power (unlike, for example, the Galaxy Note which will allow you to plug flash drives etc into the adapter without external power).

That's weird. Got any mates with MHL enabled phones you can try your adapter on? I hate problems like this, they drive you mad and you end up doubting pretty much everything you've tried. Seriously though, you do realise MHL only works on the third Thursday of the month and if you wear underpants on your head, yeah? Oh, and stand on one leg ; ) Good luck.
Other than trying that different tv at work and possibly a different HDMI cable and MHL adapter, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

its definately beginning to feel like that. my friend in work has an gs2, which i believe is mhl enabled. so tomorrow when i get into work i will try steal hm and the hdtv in work and see if i can get anywhere. at this point its either my £230 hdtv ()
my £360 phone () or my ****ty as mhl adapter from ebay /)
i guess we shall see tomorrow :/ will be gutted if its the phone. just out of interest has anyone got this going on the XE version of the sensation? as this is what i have.
still, thanks for your input bruce said that he is going to look into fixing the mhl on his CMX nightly, so if we can get this going i will be in emulator heaven

The SII is definitely MHL enabled (well on the stock ROM at any rate) - I hope it doesn't work so at least then it's hopefully just a £10 mhl adapter and not the phone or tv ; )

LOL, you must work for the NHS or local government or something. Still, you made my girlfriend and I laugh : ) Maybe try a Currys or a Richer Sounds or something. There's bound to be someone in there with a decent smartphone, and there will be plenty of TVs to try too! If they haven't got a clue what you're on about, you might just educate them a bit ; )
Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'd like to know if it would ever be possible to use USB Cable as HDMI for a device without it?
Does that make any sense?
Also, if you guys have any apps or mods that can record a video of my phone screen at a decent framerate (to record gameplay)
Please let me know.

It is certainpy possible with a pc. You could use a raspberry pi as a "converter" so you can output to your tv

If your device has MHL (Like the HTC EVO 3D), you have HDMI out through the USB port.
You just need an MHL adapter. Other than that, if your phone does not support HDMI out, it won't have it.
USB to HDMI?
You mean hdmi to USB correct? I used this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007KI8IMW/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
to connect a monitor to my PC via USB 3.0 (has worked like a charm for weeks now.
They are designing a new one, or perhaps it's already out. Search ianker.com if you are looking for something similar.

In the generic sense, no. As noted above, some mobile devices have USB-style connectors that support MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link), which allow low-cost cables to support HDMI output and/or USB.
For PCs (Windows, Macs and Linux), there are video adapters that can be thought of as video cards that connect via USB (rather than PCI Express, for example). This kind of adapter could work on tablets, phones, etc. if there were a driver written for them, but this is a nontrivial task and the market is unproven, especially as MHL adoption grows.

The only issue is if the device does not have mhl, then as of right now theres no way of gerting it to work in that sense. Even if you use say CM roms they cant take advantage of mhl even id your phone supports it. The devs have stated time and time again its proprietary and will basically never come. Regardless, im much more interested in miracast, simply put wireless hdmi connection to your tv. I have my nexus 7 using it via my ras pi. However its not polished yet and is a similar state to what Ive gotten using samsungs version with a dongle. Check it out if your interested google Android Transporter. Its on the raspberry pi website. They also got it working on the galaxy nexus and some other nexus device's.

I have a Samsung Infuse, screen broke, don't want to thorw a way, is there a way that I can turn into something like this. I would like to use the benifits of its wifi as well. Is it possible or a ROM available that would allow me to connect via my USB port on my TV?
You can give it to me, I'll really appreciate it.
It really depends on the software and what's available. If it has HDMI/MHL video out and OTG USB support... then yea.

The Infuse 4g supports MHL so yeah you can turn it into a Android mini-pc.
Check out youtube for some Infuse/MHL videos.
Buy a MHL adapter that also has an input for external power cause most TVs don't have power over HDMI/MHL
Old phone as android stick
I have several old android phones (2 unrooted, HTC EVO 4Gs and a Samsung Replenish) lying around and want to use them as android mini sticks for my TVs. I'd be using them moslty for streaming video/audio (Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, etc) and checking email, social media, etc.
This brings up a few questions:
1. How do I power it since it only has a mini HDMI port? My TV's HDMI does not provide power. Is there splitter available that will let me plug into the wall and to my TV from the mini HDMI?
2. Do I need special software on the old phone?
3. Can I use another android device as a remote control (via wifi) or do I need to get a fly-mouse or something? I'd prefer using my current android phone or tablet.
I realize that the sticks out there are cheap and more powerful than my old phone, but...why not give this a try?

Something with a HDMI port is ideal so the Evo 4G would make a great TV stick device. You should be able to use a USB charger and have the HDMI plugged in all at the same time. Thats what I do with my old Droid 3 which has the same ports.
There are apps out there that can let you control one device from another, you may need to be rooted though IIRC.

Does anyone have an idea whether its possible to use MHL + OTG with charging on the Skyrocket? Whether it be stock or an aftermarket rom/kernel doesn't matter. I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this phone, but I'm leaning toward not possible.
This is what I planned on ordering. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LAZG2M/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I would assume since the MHL adapter puts the device in charge mode, it wouldn't read the attached usb device (if using a hub or y adapter) since it is not in Host mode. Any have any experiance with this or have any links they can provide. It would be much appreciated!

I have the same cable and mhl works as long add the rom supports it. As for your question I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741583&page=21 and on the last page there is a link for someone who got it to work on as3 however our phones have different pin configuration but you should be able to do the same thing as him
OTG while using MHL sounds like a great way to fry something important on your phone. it's clear the note 2 had something like this in mind with the smart dock. it looks like the smart dock works with the S3 so it could be that the way they designed the usb port it all just works as needed for this.
I'm interested in the usecase/motivation for doing both at the same time if you don't mind sharing.

Well my Skyrocket screen was destroyed by my youngest son So, I had an idea to use the old phone with the MHL adapter to connect to my TV (which is not a smart TV). The need for the OTG is to plug in peripherals such as kb/mouse, but after further review, i could probably just use bluetooth. The device itself doesn't need to have much storage really, all of the movies are being streamed from my mini home server (DLNA).
So instead of going out and spending 60 on a smart TV adapater, I figured I would try to make use of what I already had, a phone with a broken screen. I'm not even sure the digitizer works and I was unable to find a replacement screen a decent price. The phone has already been replaced with a Nexus 4, so I'm not really concerned with the "safety" of the skyrocket.
I think it would be nice to use it as a TV adapter, surf net, play games watch movies while in bed using a wireless mouse/keyboard.
You would think there would already be something like this out there...
I came across this, then noticed their statement "Use Bluetooth keyboard for wireless control" Which really tells me no OTG... and heard was broken ha.

I am looking at purchasing this item so i can connect my tv and mouse to unlock my phone and download all my pictures. (broken digitizer)
Anybody have this already or know if it will sort my problem?

you should be good to go. just make sure you get boot , sound and such . the nicest thing is the Spen will likely not have broken SO , if you get a nice MHL dock / samsung OEM is the best one except that it is in portrait mode but the OEM has 3x USB and its about the only one I've found to reliably work . but ya like I use LTE full time , no wifi so it works perfect with a mouse and keyboard , **** even a hard drive and you have a hella cool ass hub for a TV. seriously it is probably the best way to use ANDROID on a TV with full feature sets.
Cheers mate. My first course of action is to double check it shows on the TV so I bought a 4 quid 11pin micro USB to TV adapter. I'd that works OK. I'll invest in one of these. I will let you know.
