I am assisting my sister to re install her rom and when it soft-bricked it and I installed a stock rom over it. After a while I noticed none of the roms had root / cwm and I finally found one with root but no CWM.
Does anyone know the best way to install recovery on here because this method does not work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
I also tried installing via clockwork mod as the i9000 and by using oneclickroot but that did not work either.
This is a question and should have been posted in the Q&A forum.
But you may want to look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25111013&postcount=1
To get cwm you will need to flash a custom kernel such as Entropy's dd kernel.
Qkster has a heimdall one-click for that on his uclb3 one-click thread, on the second post.

This is compatible with the Rogers version of the infuse?
btw thanks so much for the help.
Recovery for rogers' is a bit different. That's why it did not work with the methods you first tried..
For rogers I would suggest Infusion. You should find it in the iset thread.

In that thread, the second and third post contain heimdall-1-click recovery of Entropy's and Zen's kernel. These GB kernels were based on the original Roger's kernel 2.3.3.
You can install these kernels onto Roger's firmware and get the cwm recovery that you are looking for.
After you install one of these kernels, boot into cwm using the 3 fingers technique. Then you can do what you want from there
(edit: the original Infusion kernel that andros mentioned is also based on the Roger's 2.3.3)

I'm gonna make this short and simple.
I've got a stock Infuse 4G on 2.3.6 and I have no idea how to root it.
To my knowledge, SOC does not work.
How do I go about rooting my phone?
This might have already been answered, but I can't find a thread concerning it. A link would be appreciated, if possible.
with a kernel switcheroo. you need a non secure kernel to root it, fortunately the Rogers 2.3.3 kernels do boot 2.3.6. flash an older custom kernel like the hellraiser kernel through heimdall, I suggest heimdall just because its easier to extract a kernel zimage from an update than to do that but then create a .tar.md5 archive of it. you can use the ever popular entropy DD kernel but if you go back to the 2.3.6 kernel then you will have to change the vold.fstab back to stock.
the kernel flash may root the phone depending on the kernel but its an older su binary and if you update it the kernel will overwrite it on next boot.
if you want to use a custom kernel permanently then use entropy DD because it has had the root script removed allowing updates to su. though it doesn't root it will allow root through adb so soc may work after you flash that kernel. then you can update the binary through superuser
if you are gonna use the stock 2.3.6 kernel then use an old build of entropy or an old hellraiser kernel. then boot up and flash the 2.3.6 kernel back to the phone through heimdall or sgs kernel flasher. (sgs Kernel flash has the ability to find the zimage inside of a .zip or. tar even in subfolders so you can actually put the leak .tar on the SD card and flash the kernel that way if you can't figure out heimdall)
Thanks for the quick response. I'll try it tomorrow since it looks like it may take a while...

andrew,
did you bought the phone with stock 2.3.6 installed? what version is it? uckl2?
did you flash it with one of the unofficial GB leaks?
thanks.
ohh almost forgot about voodoo. the custom kernels convert the files system and wont allow you to flash the stock kernel, you'll get bootloops. if you don't intend to keep the custom kernel disable lagfix before you start by creating a folder with the path /sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix
the V in Voodoo is capital. all other letters are lower case.
read the Rogers root thread for more details. its the same process laid out for rogers since that thread was written before soc worked on anything above 2.3.2. actually that kernel will also work on 2.3.6 for att.

I haven't tried this yet, Dani. Would it be possible for him to use heimdall one click defuse kernel that adam made to obtain red recovery then flash the super user fix to install SU?

No you don't... If you're on stock you're on 2.2.x (AT&T) or 2.3.3 (Rogers).
AT&T hasn't released Gingerbread for the Infuse yet.

yes but if he is already on gingerbread he needs a backup gingerbread kernel, if he uses cwm for the gb kernel it must already be on the SD card.
so it would be
1. download cwm flashable gb kernel to the SD card
2. download heimdall defuse kernel oneclick to PC and install drivers, I haven't done this on windows in a while but the Samsung drivers should work but heimdall also has there own system to recognize the device. forgot what its called....
3 run heimdall from run in windows or terminal in other os and put phone in download mode and connect the data cable
4. flash defuse kernel
5. boot into recovery with 3button. phone wont boot gb on froyo kernel but recovery works.
6. flash root
7.flash gb kernel
8. reboot
9. win
I used to use the mismatched kernels on the captivate. if nothing else was working I'd go back to stock 2.1, flash a froyo kernel with cwm and then flash a froyo or gb rom. 3 easy steps.
Rooting 2.3.6
Simply use the Heimdall Defuse Kernel to flash red cwm then flash the rooted version of the ROM Or a custom rom. it pre-roots your phone for you just click flash

So im trying to install a rom on my friend's sg4s and I got it rooted via superoneclick root. However the phone came with gingerbread and multiupload seems to be down do I can't grab the files for the Odin+root (I assume its froyo) note can I grab the first file from that cwm thread. What do I do at this point to try and get cwm in so I can install the room?
Look at this post

That should help you out.
You need to flash a custom kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331
And if you dont know how to use heimdall then flash one of these in odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
You don't need heimdall or odin to flash a custom kernel. If you are rooted use SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. Much easier. There are directions in the link hechoen posted above.
If you aren't rooted there are directions in the link for that as well.
ABOUT
------------------------
This is a collection of popular kernel and recovery combinations for the Infuse 4G in Odin tar.md5 format. Extract these rar packages in a program like 7zip, and flash the tar.md5 in Odin.
Please be sure that the kernel / recovery image that you flash is intended for the rom that you plan to use. For more information and support for each kernel, please visit the appropriate thread for that kernel. Please don't ask questions about the kernels or report kernel related bugs in this thread.
If there is another kernel that you'd like to see in this thread, let me know!

Note: Ensure that Voodoo lagfix is disabled before flashing the stock UCLB3 kernel. Also, this kernel should most likely only be used with UCLB3 based roms. If you have issues seeing your external SD card after using this kernel, see the answer to question 1.) in the FAQ below.

INSTALL
------------------------
1.) Download and extract the desired kernel package from the section above.
2.) If needed, download the Odin exe HERE.
3.) If needed, install the latest Samsung USB drivers. You can get these by installing Samsung Kies, which can be found HERE.
4.) Place phone in download mode.
5.) Open the Odin exe; if your phone is recognized, the window under ID:COM will turn yellow.
6.) In Odin, click on "PDA" and browse to the tar.md5.
7.) Select the tar.md5. Make sure it shows up in the PDA window, and then click on Start. Do not power off or disconnect the phone while Odin flashes the package and reboots the phone.
8.) You're finished. If the progress window in Odin is green and reads "PASS!", then you have successfully flashed the kernel / recovery package.
FAQ
------------------------
1.) I flashed the stock UCLB3 kernel and now I can't access my external sd card. How can I fix this?
In UCLB3 based roms, if you flash the stock UCLB3 kernel after using a custom kernel, you will most likely have trouble seeing your external sdcard. To fix this, use Root Explorer (or a similar app) to edit /system/etc/vold.fstab. In Root Explorer, browse to /system/etc and choose "Mount R/W" to gain write permission to the directory. Open vold.fstab in the built in text editor. Change the mmc2 in the last line to mmc1. Save and exit. Reboot, and you will regain use of your external sd card.

Note to any user:
If you are on a GB ROM and lost recovery or in a boot loop, one attempt would be to flash just the GB kernel to get back into CWM recovery. You may not need to flash the entire ROM.
Likewise, if you are on a ICS CM9 ROM and lost recovery or in boot loop, you can also try to flash just the ICS kernel to get back to CWM recovery.
If you can't use Odin, use the Heimdall's. If you can't use the Heimdalls, use the Odin.
edit: (after thoughts for new users)
Also: If you are on any stock GB build and flash one of the GB kernels, you don't need to perform any superoneclick, modded 3e etc. You can proceed directly into CWM recovery and flash with you want. If you want only root, check out jscott's root thread or my root thread.

You can do this once you have a non stock kernel in place.

Frustrated
Somebody please help me. I put my wife's infuse back to stock (UCLB3) First I couldn't root it. Then I flashed the stock rooted with Odin. I proceded to install CWM with the 3e file, and ROM Manager. That didn't work. I also tried to flash this kernel (UCLB3) to see if it would give me CWM... Nothing! I am close to loosing my mind. I could do this **** all day long on my Epic 4G but for some reason this phone is kicking my ass.
One thing I'd like to point out is when i power down my phone and try to go into recovery the option to "reinstall packages" does not show. That is the only thing different i've noticed than all the videos and tuturials I found on the thread. Somebody please help me.

Okay, where you lose me is "the 3e file and ROM Manager." Sounds like you're not following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27283140&postcount=1
Make sure, first of all, that you're flashing this one, especially if you're flashing back from CM10. Flash in Odin following jscott30's instructions to the letter. To add CWM, download one of those kernels. Open up the zip file and pull out the zimage and put it on your sdcard (the internal one). Download SGS Kernel Flasher. In SGS Kernel Flasher, choose to flash the zimage you just put on your phone. It will ask to reboot. Reboot and Bob's you're uncle! You have CWM.
Finally, I feel bad for posting here because the dev forums are being overrun with Q&A questions like these. So, apologies to everyone else. However, I've been there and wanted to help you out. In future, please use the Q&A forum if you have a help question.
Wow whizz, thank u very much for the help. I know some moderators would get mad at what u dis. But man I was literarily loosing my mind. I evwn rhrough the phone at my wife cause I was so iritated. 1. Not going to happen with JB or ICS roms.
2. GB (and Froyo) roms - make sure to disable voodoo lagfix from CWM recovery, reboot and allow conversion process to complete. Then flash a stock kernel using Odin, Heimdall, or SGS kernel flasher. You will lose CWM recovery and some ADB capabilities.
Good luck...

Please HELP!!!!! to all gurus out there.....
Go to this link and download one of the AntonX kernels.
You can look at the guide in the second link in my signature. Instead of flashing the ROM .jar files I listed - use the AntonX kernel you downloaded. It is the same directions to flash the kernel excluding the flashing bootloaders section.

Thank you for replying my post it really means alot to me.
Back to business,my problem is the phone is stuck on the samsung/ t-mobile splash screen.I Tried flashing the heimdall one click collection to return the stock firmware but I got an error message saying kernel failed to load.I have read that odin could flash kernels but havent see any thread for the galaxy s 4g t-mobile.
Try the one click again. It sometimes it will take a couple tries for whatever reason. Make sure USB is firmly in place. Make sure download is good. And if it still doesn't work use a different USB port.
The ODIN One-Click is called Gremlin Remover. Read up on the driver issues and how to avoid them in the guide I mentioned.
Hopefully I've done my homework...
Currently on Froyo, stock kernel, sg4g is rooted (using 1-click)
If I want to upgrade to GB, I can do so by following Lumin30's Heimdall one-click for dummies guide.
If later I want to try a custom ROM, I have to flash a kernel with CWM built in.
Sound right?

Yup
You may want to consider the CM9 + Proton kernel. I've been using it on my DD for a couple days now, and I don't miss the GB ROMs I was using. Pretty much all the things I care about are working now. It's been quite stable, and most of the problems have been UBD's solved by using the Google wrench - or uninstalling WeatherBug.
I don't know if you have to go GB first on the way to CM9. I haven't read up on that. Try the search first, read the CM9 dev and Q&A threads, then ask if you can't find it.
You do. For the GB bootloaders.
