If you're still looking for a Wifi tether app, I'm rooted with JB and the "Wifi Tether for Root Users" app by Muller,Lemons, Buxton works great. I put my device profile as Generic ICS/JB (wlan0) and it works perfectly

I can confirm this works and broadcasts in infrastructure mode.
Look up the Wireless Hotspot mod instructions using the SQLite Editor app from the play store. I've tried a ton of wireless tether apps from the market and nothing worked with my 4.1.1 RMaxxHD. Having the phone rooted and using the SQLite Editor mod allows you to use the Verizon Mobile Hotspot app free of charge. Works perfectly.
Thanks guys just had back expedience with first razr maxx and hotspots didmt think it would work on HD

Working with JB?
In case anybody reading this thread is new to Verizon and is on a shared data plan instead of unlimited data... you only need to root and do aftermarket hotspot if you're on unlimited. If you're on shared data plans, wireless hotspot is included -- no rooting or hacked hotspots necessary. It's already on your phone.

Same here, ive been using it for a while now and never had any problems.
wireless app works for my ipad or any other device. I just can not get to tether to another android phone, it used to work no problem. The phone will not even recgonize the wireless network. Right now i have a samsung droid charge and tmobile g2x. I have also tried with a samsung vibrant. no combination works. But they will work with ipad and laptop. sometimes one phone might not have good service, so I would like to use wireless in them situations. Thanks
Is there a way to tether the droid charge without using any app just using the regular stock service.

Pay for the extra hot spot service. I don't believe there's another way around it if you don't root and install wireless tether app. 3.0 pre12 is best btw.

foxfi
i would def go with foxfi app... its the beeeeessssttt in my opinion...
Nop foxfi sucks.. svtp tether hopspot app trumps all.

If you are rooted by now:
Use WIFI Tethering by OPENGARDEN .... Really easy setup + Widget works great.

I tried them all and have a hard time to decide which one! I guess if it works for you then you should stay with it. One may worked for one but not the others, probably depend on your setup. Example, the none root required, will work great for none rooted users, but it make no diff to us, cause we all rooted here.
I heard there is file such as tethering2036.apk or tethermanager2036.apk and if you delete it will it work is this true? I do not have the phone with me now so I can not check.
So what is everyone's favorite tethering method? Rooted/unrooted? I honestly haven't had the need to tether with this phone yet, but on my old device I was a fan of WiFi Tether and PdaNet depending upon what the situation called for.
I either use the built in mobile hot spot or foxfi. Of course modded the mobile hot spot so I can use it for free

Thanks for the link.. that is the thread that I followed to get it to work.
I don't have hotspot and tether on my contract, is there a ROM that will allow this? On my other phone (T-Mobile) they could detect if you were using tether or hotspot without paying and shut it down. Is this the case with Verizon as well?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Pretty much any custom ROM should have the native tether working fine without vzw knowing. Some ROMs use an app by Treve (I believe) but either way, yes you can tether.

Does anybody know of a widget that will turn on/off my hotspot? I tried apps at the top of the list in the Play Store but none of them work on my 4.4 kitkat. Any suggestions?

Tried it out, but it won't disable the hotspot like others I've tried. Am I doing something wrong.

Have you tried the status bar ones on GravityBox? If you're not rooted you could install power controls and at least have a nice shortcut to tethering.
Sent from my unlocked consumer edition Motorola Droid Maxx xt1080m.
Nah, not rooted. The power controls don't have one for the hotspot.

Hmm. My roommates droid razr maxx is configured that way with power controls but it just takes you to the hotspot page not an actual toggle. Still a shortcut tho.
Sent from my unlocked consumer edition Motorola Droid Maxx xt1080m.
Oh, well my phone is a Droid Maxx, not of the razr variety.
Power controls will work. Just add a toggle and choose mobile hotspot. Will just be a shortcut. But always accessible in notifications.
Sent from my unlocked consumer edition Motorola Droid Maxx xt1080m.
No Off-Toggle
Does anyone know why the Hotspot toggle apps will toggle on the hotspot but won't toggle it off? Is it impossible to do with a third party app on 4.4?
