when i did a hard restart i stayed rooted with fresh 1.1 (wired) but the apps were gone except superuser. i found them all again except tether.. and i cant seem to find that anywhere.
any ideas how to get it again? can i tether without it? is it safe to flash fresh 1.1 on top of 1.1?
just reflash if you cant find it

It generates a WiFi signal. You don't need to have it plugged into the USB cable. I'm not sure if that answers your question.
in a way yes.. at their web site they also have instructions to use bluetooth, in which case you could run on either mobile or wifi depending on what your using your phone on at the time.
wonder whats faster to link via wifi or bluetooth.
i did a serch for a tether walkthrough/ howto and didnt find much, not even on youtube
Bluetooth is slow as molasses compared to WiFi. I have no idea if you can do BT tether with our phones or not, though.

I think it works, but your BT Adpater has to be setup for it. I don't know much about BT other than pairing lol. Ad-Hoc = Easy&Fast.
they have the youtube vid linked.. i think it would work, but i have to install my laptop bt drivers to test.

Hey, yes, I know there are already several threads about this but I am a bit confused. My Set up: CDMA Hero CM 6.1 stable. Me being a newb for the most part to all of this...I just found out the other day...after have a rooted phone for about 6 months...that my hero can do wireless tether. So I installed the app and bam...works like a charm, immediately after installing and running for the first time, my ps3 DID detect and connect to my phone wirelessly. I even played a round of free-for-all on Black Ops to test it out and it worked great. Now today I had some down time so I figured I'd play some COD...but now my ps3 is NOT detecting or connecting with my phone. WTF!? I should also mention that after installing wireless tether on my wife's rooted EVO(froyo), I was also able to connect through her EVO on the PS3. Haven't tried using the Evo again as it's currently not in front of me. Just curious why it worked then and not now, or why it even worked at all if the PS3 supposedly doesn't pick up ad-hoc?(From what I've gathered, Wireless Tether uses AdHoc) I do have full EasyTether, which I was using before I discovered WT, so I'm not SOL, but I was hoping to finally be able to eliminate the cords and wires and what not. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
*EDIT*
Wife just got back home, grabbed her evo, and what do you know...ps3 connects with no issues...so now I have to figure out what happened or what I did to my phone to "F" it up. I am running DroidWall...the firewall is disabled, wireless tether is checked on whitelist, but this was the case when my phone was connected to the ps3 before, but I'm thinking that perhaps this or some other app is interfering. Anything I should make sure is allowed or denied data access? I'm at a loss.
^Bump^ Please...any ideas
Hi,
I have the wifi-only XOOM (nonrooted) and a rooted HTC EVO. I can pair and connect each device with another blue-tooth device, so I know that both have blue-tooth working.
I can't get the Xoom and EVO to connect via blue-tooth. It says "paired but not connected" and when I try to click on it to connect it, nothing will happen (on other items it will search...then connect). The only options available to me are rename device and unpair.
I've rebooted, nothing works. I've tried the instructions for tethering, and just trying to get the blue-tooth connection to work.
1. Has anyone successfully paired the wifi only xoom with the evo?
2. Any ideas or suggestions for me?
Thanks. This is really frustrating because the tethering is the reason I bought the wifi only xoom.
Edit: I thought I typed this, but it is not showing. Somewhere on XDA are the instructions for wireless tethering, (sorry don't have link handy) and I have followed them. Doesn't work.
I rooted my EVO with CM7 and the Hotspot software came pre-installed. I just tether to my xoom with that, no problems. It's pretty fast on 3G.

My EVO has Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 5 - 01/07/2011] which has the wireless tether built in. Is your xoom rooted or non? Mine is not.
yeah, it would be great if someone could figure out how to tether via bluetooth with an EVO to the Xoom; my wife has a non rooted evo, and a wifi only xoom, and wishes she could tether..
My rooted EVO does wifi tether easily to the xoom, but, it wont tether via bluetooth either; it shows "paired", but never connected..
Anyone figured this out yet?
thanks
same here. I have rooted Evo with vaelpak 3.2 on it and the wifi tether app works great but I can't get Bluetooth to tether at all. I hear that is a faster connection so I want to try it but the is no option to tether after clicking the wrench

I have the same problem running a rooted evo with MYN 2.2 RLS5. Paired but not connected is the only thing I can get. I download the newest wireless tether app and could not get it to work.
I can can tether using Wireless tether using an open connection but when I try to encrypt I cannot get it to work. I sure would like a fix before my trial runs out on the xoom.

I do not have an EVO, I have a droid OG , but ran into a similar problem. I made a video on the subject. I apologize if this does not work for you but try it out. I recommend unpairing your devices first and start where the video starts. I had to unpair to get mine working. Since your rooted it shouldn't be a problem and take a minute to try it out.

if your phone is rooted, its super easy to tether via wifi; hundreds of posts all over this board and the internet about it.
its tethering via bluetooth that doesnt seem to work on an evo..

Thanks, I find all of the tether wifi posts, and I can do that. I thought I had seen that some evo users were able to tether by bluetooth, but maybe not. Maybe when the sd card slot patch comes out it will fix it.
Hi Guys,
In the last three days I've learned how to root my captivate, side-load apps, installed barnacle and wifi tether, all in the hopes of using my TF while on the road with my Captivate.
Unfortunately I cant get BT or Ad Hoc tethering to work.
I get the paired but not connected error when using BT
My TF is 8.2.3.13 so I can't root (without downgrading to 8.2.3.9 which I'm kind of afraid to do).
Does anyone know if I need to install a custom rom on my captivate in order to get the BT to tether?
I've probably read 100 threads in hopes of getting this to work, but at this point I might have to return the TF and get an ipad (yuck) just to get some connectivity for working on the road.
Any suggestions would be very very appreciated.
Regards,
wunshot
I'm assuming you want to use internet from your phone to tether to the tablet correct? Installing a custom rom is one way of achieving this. I use cognition rom which comes with the ability to tether through wifi. You need to activate that on the phone and have the tablet connect to the phone's wifi network.
I'm not sure if you were doing this but you cannot create an ad hoc network on the tablet and connect the phone to it to tether. The phone has to be the host and the tablet the client.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You don't want bluetooth. SirSid is on the right track suggesting the custom ROM although there are other ways that might not be as simple.
You want to turn on Mobile AP (Access Point) which turns your Cappy into a wifi hotspot and you're good to go. Go check the Captivate forums on how to achieve Mobile AP without much trouble. If you try to use it on a stock froyo cappy it will warn you about needing a tethering plan with ATT, you can easily remove the plan check using TiBu and it's all spelled out in the Cappy forums.

Atleast I'm not aware of being able to do BT tethering on a Captivate. I'm interested to know, if its even possible. Lets post a thread on the Captivate forum.
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, i plan on using my phone as the wifi host. I will give that cognition rom a shot. Im assuming the cognition rom creates the wifi network using infrastructure rather than ad hoc...is that the case?

Have no idea, I know it just works, it's actually a part of Android since Froyo, it just needs to be enabled and/or not checked if you don't have a tether plan.
I think cognition just uses the defualt android AP app. It creates the network in infrastructure mode if I remember right.
In any case, it just works
(Its located in Settings >> Wireless and network >> Mobile AP)
It supports bluetooth tethering as well, but the tablet would need to recognize it as a bluetooth modem. I have not tried that yet. Using a usb tether would probably be best if it works however. Using wifi tether drains battery faster than than my car charger can charge my phone. I still manage to loose battery even when its plugged in.
Sweet...I'll install cognition when I get home and see where I stand. Thanks for the advice...I'll updater you in a few hours with my results
OP, I have a rooted cappy with firefly rom on it. Super easy to do and its stable and allows for wifi hot spot without stupid ATT finding out you are tethering.
http://www phoenix-hq com/firefly/
It is a legit stable rom. I am able to wifi tether easily with my TF, no problems.
I'm on a stock froyo captivate Mobile AP works fine for tethering, can't figure out bluetooth. I tried for a couple of hours but gave it up Mobile AP works great, although I hear bluetooth saves battery?
EDIT: sorry it's a rogers captivate, i believe US is still on 2.1 nvm!

I don't understand why your getting into the Ad-hoc thing. Any rooted ROM you install on the Captivate, you can make your phone a Wifi hotspot via Mobile AP settings. That would create a Wifi network from the phone, and you can connect to that network in the TF.

A few people have had the same issue, so I thought I'd start a thread on this disturbing new development. Was there some kind of update that FoxFi hotspot will not activate? No changes in settings or anything. Was working fine yesterday. Any ideas?

Exact same problem for me. I changed literally ZERO settings and have not updated a single app today at ALL (my phone is not set to update apps automatically, I have to do it manually so I am POSITIVE that Foxfi has not updated at all). I wirelessly tether with Foxfi literally every single day for work and it worked fine for me this afternoon at approx. 2pm EST and when I went to use it again at approx. 4:45pm EST it did not work, I got the "You need a subscription" error when turning on the hotspot. I even uninstalled the app and reinstalled and it still doesn't work. I am rooted and on AOC3 if that helps.
Any ideas? Or any other app that will work besides installing a custom rom? This is a MAJOR disappoinment.

It's a huge disappointment considering I deliberately lost root to take the 5.1.1 update, thinking Fox Fi would work just fine for ever. Seriously thinking of reactivating either my old S3 or m7. The USB internet share works fine, but I need the WiFi tether to work so I can use my printer. A dark day indeed.
Just came across this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/verizon-killed-foxfi-tethering-people-t3253649
Working wifi hotspot alternative to foxfi on Verizon S6
Foxfi also stopped working for me yesterday. I found an alternative app however and verified it works on a Verizon Galaxy s6. On google play store for $3ish... "WiFi Tether Router"
It requires root, so not everyone will be able to use it. I am on a rooted Verizon s6 G920VVRU1A0E2. Other people in the comments of that app are also indicating its working on Verizon. that firmware is the newest I am aware of that can be rooted.... but i have not checked in a while so maybe you can root the updated versions now. Either way its worth going back to a slightly older version for a wifi tether that works.
Hey guys I'm having the same problem with my gs6 on version I still have unlimited data tho so what are my alternatives? Anyone have a link to how to root my GS6 and is Wifi Teather Root the only way to go after Imy rooted.
That's it.... This phone going on swappa going back to s5 and will order a nexus 6p or 5x
For anyone who really needs their cell phone internet on another machine, I have a temporary work around solution. I was able to use the USB Tether with PDAnet+ and run a shared connection over ethernet to my other devices. (In this instance I'm running an ethernet cable from my PC to my Xbox One). You want to go to the Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings and open the interface that represents the connection between your PC and your USB tether. Go to the Sharing tab and check the box for "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection." Then run an ethernet cable from the PC to any other device that also has an ethernet port and it should work. I have not tried running a router from this ethernet cable, but it may be worth a shot. That is all I needed to do on my Window's 7 PC. I also tried turning my Macbook Pro on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 into an access point and going to the Sharing settings and setting it up, but even though my Xbox and other devices could see the AP they were not able to access the internet. I hope these instructions might get someone out of a jam!
Edit: To clarify, my Verizon Galaxy S6 is not rooted and is on the latest software update released by Verizon.

I can confirm that "Wifi Tether Router" app does work. It seems to take a long time to turn it on/off each time, but it does work. I do wonder how long it will work though until Verizon blocks this too......
Tethering works fine with Root. I don't think there is a way for vzw to block that

Why are you using a third party app if you're rooted? The native tethering app is the most reliable and doesn't need to go through a vpn.
I suspect verizon blocked the vpn that foxfi is using.
Well, my S6 has now achieved the status of really expensive paperweight. I just reactivated my old S3 still bootloader unlocked and rooted, now running 5.1.1 AOSP ROM, using native WiFi hotspot, no Verizon bloatware, no ads, simple and effective. Much better experience, and it still remarkably has developer support.
Anyone want to buy a nice paperweight?
J/k I'll most likely hang onto my S6 on the off chance some genius is able to unlock it someday when the planets are aligned just right.
