Will you ever listen when people tell you to SEARCH and READ? There are already plenty of guides and threads discussing this very subject, so I would suggest most politely that you look for them rather than expecting people on here to repeat the same things over and over again.

You seem to think that we're doing this just to pi$$ you off - but we're not. You NEED to read and understand EXACTLY what you are doing, and why, or you will screw up your phone and have an expensive paper-weight which can't be recovered.
You need to remember that most of us first S-Offed our phones before there were software methods, so we had even more to lose if we got it wrong. Understanding what you are doing will make it much better for you, but expecting us to simply repeat what is already out there helps nobody.

@simonTS: you're right, of course, but where do you find the motivation to do it over and over again? you know, these people won't stop coming...

I was one of "those" people, i asked stupid questions to begin with. It didn't take me long to realise that research was a lot better way to find out. I've made three posts since i signed up and I'm not really happy with any of them. Ok the xtc clip question some might find useful, but overall i wish I'd read more, not that i didn't read but maybe i should have done more, after i got the htcdev over with, downgrading and s-off was a doddle. But trawling through threads is really the only way to go. I'm just glad i twigged quickly.

Ok, personally i wouldn't flash the ics ruu, it's buggy and causes loads of problems. Get used to flashing custom roms and using adb. Whilst your doing that for a couple of weeks read up on downgrading and s-off. Read all the guides lots, then when it begins to hurt your head, stop for a day or two then read again, that's how i did it six months ago. The way too do anything here is to search and read, search and read and don't rush into anything.

ben_pyetts INDEX thread is a good start. i followed it when i got my device and did s-off without problems. just read carefully.

[Q] Can't install TMOUS 1.45.531.1 over EU 1.45.401.2?

After super-wiping my TMOUS Sensation with mike1986's super-wipe script, I've been unable to flash any TMOUS ROM :\ tried every safe method of formatting my partitions and still can't get a TMOUS ROM to boot past the white HTC splash screen. PLEASE HELP!!
Would I have to install the original TMOUS ROM that came with the phone, and THEN upgrade to the 1.45 ROM? I'm sooo confused and would very much appreciate any insight.
You'll need to flash the RUU, the get the OTA - well - OTA!!

Ok, I am not trying to be a ****, but SEARCH for it... It doesn't take that long to do it. Asking for links, is asking for others to do your work for you... Use the search function, it does work wonders...

Perhaps a better question would be "which RUU am I looking for?". Which is basically what i asked in the first place. Plus I'm sure somebody has the RUU number memorized anyway.
I'm not asking anybody to do any work for me. Hence "links would be awesome". Meaning, IF he was willing to post links for me I would appreciate it very much. Thanks for taking me out of context.
Now can somebody please tell me which RUU I should be looking for?

I'm out of options. I cannot get ANY other ROM other than Android Revolution to boot on this phone. I've tried everything imaginable. WHAT THE F**K.

[Q] Official Android 4 installed (how do i root now?)

I installed the official ICS from HTC's website. its like a RUU or something. I'm real real noob and i kinda want to root now. Is it too late? or do i have to wait? O and further information I don't know what radios, roms, flashing... etc means. so ya!.. im a real noob sry guys.
Based on your description to yourself, as you real real real noob and does not know the meaning of the technical words and things done to your phone. I would strongly suggest to keep out of rooting. You might kill your phone.
Rooting is not for yourself, and for noobs, again based from on you self description.

OP, i would suggest that u take time to read the stickies. There are full of information inside in detail. And if u still need further detail then google is your friend.
The search button would do you a great help, no point posting the same question and waiting it to be answered as most question concerning rooting has been answered before, many times. As rooting is not something newly discovered for to this phone.
If you do not take the time to read then u will bump into many issue, that would of course not cost anyone in this forum any harm, but cost your phone to possibly brick.
Read the guides, read the pros and cons, and read the comments(don't be fooled by the number of complains, most of them have solutions and the methods are proven to work).
If you have doubt, search 1st, search 2nd, search google, try different words and finally only then post a question.

kk ty for the reply but wat i rlly meant is that i can't really find any articles about how to root a htc desire s with android 4 installed. I read alot of posts and i tried the power with colume down button to check my hboot version but it just flashes a white frame and then turns black. Of course i would be glad if you could tell me a post that explains how to root a desire s with ics installed

ty for emphasizing on my noob"ness" and i had started to read alot of posts and you know im starting to get the stuff. But can you help me on my question?? do you know how to s-off the desire s with ics installed or where i could get more information on this? thx for replying tho!!
The information is all over the forum. At least one of the guides that is good for Gingerbread, is good for ICS too. Until you have enough knowledge to figure this stuff out yourself, I'd suggest, as others, to stay away from rooting. I don't want to answer another barrage of questions "this doesn't work and that doesn't work, I'm stuck with a non-working phone, what do I do now", and in fact I won't answer. If enough of those few that can answer will be annoyed to the point where they won't bother answering - you'll be left with a non-working phone and no help.
You have two options, and both are well documented in these forums.
1. (recommended): downgrade your hboot (and with it the system software, but afterwards you can install what you want) and then get s-off
2. : unlock your phone on the htc-dev website, lose any warranty, always need to flash boot.img by fastboot from pc etc.
Guides for both these options should be quickly found on these forums through searching.
You have hboot 2.xx.xxxx. that's why you can't get s-off without downgrading.

AFAIK it is not possible to downgrade hboot on ICS RUU without root. And you can't get root without unlock via htc-dev.
So you need to unlock via htc-dev!
Correct me if I'm wrong and please share a link.

Indeed, AFAIK you can't get root in ICS without HTCDev unlock.
So you can either HTCDev unlock and root, or you can HTCDev unlock, root, relock, downgrade, S-OFF, upgrade bootloader, and then do whatever you want.
Guides for both of those methods exist.

This is why people start getting annoyed with the 'noobs' on the forums. You ask questions, get them answered by guys like Jack_R1 who know what they are talking about and then just ignore them, or ask the same damn question again.

Well for any noob the internet is a great place to start especially XDA
As people have instructed already these forums are full of wisdom, and Im sure the answer is in one of the many threads.
But at a high level this is what I did:
1.Installed the official ICS update from HTC using the RUU.
2.Unlocked the phone via HTC dev website instructions.
3.Rooted the phone using SuperOneClick(Flashed it via recovery)
But I really dont understand why you would want to root the stock rom as it does not even support overclocking, I mean the kernel.
Im using Fallout V5.0 and I assure you thats its way better than stock
Note: If all this seems like greek and latin to you, please refrain from rooting your device and hence avoid any possible damage to your phone.

It's not as simple as someone deciding "oh I think I will figure out how to get S-OFF on the HTC Explorer today"; it's a complicated process. Plus, as far as I can tell, it's not all that useful to 99% of users, everything else (custom kernels, custom ROMs etc.) all works fine without it.
The only benefit of S-OFF it will be, that the guys will have freedom about the partitions in the phone, which in this phone is kind'a usles. The bad thing is that everybody will start to make experiments and then we will have many hard bricked phones.

It depends what kind of guys are in the services in your country. Here where I'm they took it with jaggy's rom, so if you can slip past them that bootloader says relocked not locked, you should be fine

[Q] Getting S-OFF

I know there's a thread for s-off already, but it seems to have stalled? I am looking to start something, and figure it out before I end up contacting HTC myself. First question I have, is there such a thing as a DIAG file for the XL? I see on one x forum that they have been working on a way to use a white card, and this diag file, but they have only one problem, the CID needs to be be a superCID, which most of us with XL already have. I know I do. Please help me help find a way. Thanks.

Glad you wanna join in
I would start tho by reading what info is available, starting a new thread on project development should at least start with something not already being researched in the first thread. Not being rude, but read thru the existing thread, get as many questions as you can answered, and then figure out what questions need to be answered. It really is a practice that makes things simpler, information referenced easier, efficient and much much more productive.
The existing s off thread is in the general forum so anybody can post anytime too, so feel free to read and post, in that order

Yes I have read it over, If anyone can find any hboot that can be s-offed, does it have to be for the evita, or could we use an (ENG hboot?) from the jewel? I have read on one forum that this user flash successfully the evita on to his jewel, and it would boot to the bootloader, which is all you need for some of the o-ff tools, then once you write the S-OFF flag, you should be good to flash any hboot back and maintain that flag?
Anyways, I have read all over, I just can post in the dev forums... yet. I have read them all over time and time again. So this is yet another option to try out.

You were asked to tread lightly in the s-off thread but no you go in there and bombard/pollute the thread with irrelevant comments. The S-off thread is not for you to ask questions. If you have a MEANINGFUL contribution to make by all means do but at this point why don't you sit back, take a deep breath and READ instead of pissing everybody off and making an already tense situation worse,

Don't know why, there was a post here about it being taken down.
Also just wanted to ask, if I do this, will I still be able to root afterwords if I decide to?
Yes. But the Official ICS was a bit rubbish. You'd be much better off installing a custom ROM to be honest.

OK, thanks, I might try rooting then, just didn't now any good ways of rooting on hboot 2.02.0002, so I might try downgrading to 0.98.0002, because I seen a good video on how to root and get s-off from 0.98.0002 hboot.
