Switching to Verizon; Which phone to get? - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, having a little dilemma deciding what phone to get.
I've had a myTouch 4G since April '11 and my dad is paying the ETF in a couple of weeks because his work offered him a great deal on Verizon (including unlimited data!!!).
I'm torn between these three phones: iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, Droid DNA
I like the iPhone 5, because, well it's an iPhone. I love iPhone's, but I do have an iPod Touch. So probably not. Still considering it though.
All my friends have the GS3 and love it, and it is a hell of a phone. Features just about everything, only dislike is the fact it's Dual-Core, which isn't THAT big of a deal.
Then, there's the DNA. Beautiful in every way, but I like Touchwiz the best, Sense is OK at best for me, and it seems like it might be kind of too big. But it is 1080P and Quad-Core... mouthwatering...
I have outruled the Note 2 because it's definitely too big for a phone I'll have for 2 years, and the Razr Maxx HD is just underpowered to me.
Cost is not an issue. But here's what I currently use my mYtouch for:
Lots of facebook, games like Hill Climb Racer, Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, etc., browsing the web plenty, listening to music, viewing videos and pictures, taking pics and videos when I want, etc. I'm gonna have this phone for 2 years so I don't want a phone that will slow down anytime soon.
What do you guys/gals think is best? Thanks!

For your needs... it really depends. You seem to have basic interests and don't really require a lot of customization from what I see. I would get the GS3 because it is such a well-rounded, great device. I would not get the iPhone just due to one simple question you must ask yourself: what does it offer that a GS3 doesn't? In the next two years if you find yourself low on storage with an iPhone then what? That's just one example. I don't feel like typing out a million reasons why I'd go with the gs3. I could, trust me. And I'm not even an Apple hater. They cater to the simple, less tech savvy usually. I wouldn't recommend it for someone like you who (a) uses xda and is surrounded with a wonderful Android loving community and (b) because you want something more long lasting. The iPhone 5 will stop getting updates when it gets old. The original Droid runs on Jellybean. There's my $.02.

Only you can decide what phone you want ~ as 3thanol said iphone 5 will stop getting update once the new gen phone comes out . S3 is a good choice but if you want latest go for the Droid Dna .

Get either the galaxy s3 or HTC DNA.the DNA does not have a micro SD slot though.Personally, based on specs,I would get the dna

How has Samsung been about releasing new android revisions (gb, ics, jb, etc)? My personal experience with the HTC Thunderbolt has been lackluster... promising ICS updates but never delivering.

It depends on the phone iirc. My skyrocket didn't get official ICS until July and the s3 is supposed to get Jellybean soon I think but I have 4.1.2 aokp flashed on my skyrocket so their releases don't really matter to me.

Honestly, no Verizon phone truly is worth upgrading from Thunderbolt.

I keep looking to buy used or make future plans, but my tbolt is smooth, has a kickstand, voice and data at the same time.... there is nothing I want to upgrade to. Maybe wait on the S3? No reason to get a dual core, but might as well wait on quad.
My question, has anyone upgraded and found a vastly superior experience from current Verizon phones? I think I can last many more months and be happy on this phone....

I'm in the same boat as you.. I know a lot of people with new Verizon phones and there is no way i would spend another $250 to upgrade at this point... This phone runs great

+ 1 here as well. I actually chose the thunderbolt as my upgrade device in january.
Why?
For the features and money, anything else verizon is... Meh...

had a fascinate and i didn't think this TB would be so much of a upgrade as it turned out to be. my wife gets jealous of it and she has a bionic... who would've though...?
I was going to make a thread like this today...
And even compared to the nexus we still have an unlocked bootloader, 4G, 32 gig removable card, removable batt, gorilla glass, a better 8 mp camera, and kickstand... plus ics on the way
Nexus has face unlock, nfc, samoled, dc (not a game changer), ics already and will get jellybean first, non-removable card, and a worse camera...
None of those things are worth $300 imo!
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA App
Wow, TB love all around! I've actually been eligible for an upgrade for a few months now, but the Nexus didn't seem like that much of an upgrade. I was really looking into the Droid 4 (have tinges of keyboard envy), but idk -- it just didn't seem worth it. I hate to waste my early upgrade, but I think I might just wait the normal 2 years.
FWIW, I'm still totally stock, aside from using Go Launcher. I haven't even rooted or rom'd, so there's probably a whole other world to explore on this phone. I also have the Rezound battery and just got a new dock (the $10 one from htcpedia), which would be a shame to waste.
I love this phone. ICS would be nice, but i probably wouldnt use it without sense. I get great battery life, have beats audio, and a very smooth rom built for a dual core. Rezound would be nice, but im very happy.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
There's no way I'm replacing my Thunderbolt until I can get a phone that has the same flexibility (removable SD card, unlockable, rootable, lots of ROM options) and also has NFC.
Basically, Thunderbolt + NFC + better specs in all categories, is what I'm after, before I'd consider upgrading.
Yeah, the main thing for me is unlocked & 4G . . .
I love my liquid 3.2 aosp rom as well, this thing is so fast.
Getting rid of sense dropped the size of my TiBU folder from 705 mb to 210 mb due to the lesser amount of stock apps
I have an upgrade on my acct that i can use, but i think there is nothing worth upgrading to
Whats the deal with the rezound battery? Is it the same size with a larger capicity?

sounds awesome! if money wasn't an issue, i would prob snag one today as well with the $100 discount, but i'll just wait a bit for an ota ics release
Got a droid razr maxx, and it is hands down superior in every way...espicially now that I am running ICS (AOKP)...wifey has the TB, and every time I touch it I am happy I upgraded.

Well, didn't work out the way I liked. I could get upgrade but would have to pay $300 today. I called verizon twice and express my opinion on that, since it's $100 off today, and got hanged up on. Great support. So gonna wait 15 more days.

IDK how a locked bootloader Moto is in every way 'superior', it's not even fully rooted - all you can do, boiled down, is lots of skinning and themes.
Call me simple, but that doesn't sound superior to me; sounds more like a cr-apple product.

Ever since the battery life was fixed in one of the updates it's been a great phone. There are definitely some phones that I would consider an overall upgrade but not worth $. If I could upgrade and get a free Rezound, Razr or Nexus I might strongly consider...
Bionic is free but not really sure if I would pick a free Bionic over a free TBolt.
I'm with you guys, until there's another voice+data phone I'm not upgrading.
If Motorola started playing nice again and didn't encrypt the damn boot loader I'd be all about the Droid 4 as I miss my physical keyboard from my D1.
However, my biggest thing is that with AOSP email client doesn't work right when forwarding attachments. Which apparently is a non-issue in MotoBlur... I haven't used it, so can't say.

I had a Tb and now a Galaxy Nexus. I would say the experience is definitely superior, especially the display and stock android ics. I had lots of lag on my Tb, terrible battery drain, and the proximity sensor sucked balls. I hung up on people so many freaking times with my cheek it was ridiculous. The Nexus is a lot of fun and has been 100% stable. I was expecting a lot of bugs in ics but everything runs great. Get one today and don't look back, lol.

I don't think the GN will get Jelly Bean first (at least officially). If I'm not mistaken there has always been a new Nexus with the new OS.
With that being said back to the original topic, I'm pretty happy with my TB. I have 2 upgrades available on my account and none of the recent phones have intrigued me enough to use one.
Sure I'd like ICS now but not enough to buy a GN, and the other phones (Rezound, RAZR, RAZR Max, LG Spectrum - yes I am including it because it has specs pretty close to the Rezound) are in the same boat as the TB waiting on a promised ICS release. Which means they aren't utilizing those dual core chips to their full potential anyways.

I'd really recommend getting the Galaxy SII (not Skyrocket).
Just. Plain. Old. Sexy. Classy. SII.
The Skyrocket has a larger screen (4.5"), but from what I hear, it seems to have a few more issues than the SII original. Regardless, I still hear it's a great phone, but I think as far as getting future updates and Samsung support, original Galaxy SII is the safest bet.
If you really want a huge phone, look at the Galaxy Note.
And... Stay away from the Infuse. It's considered really old and outdated now. Yes, it's still a perfectly usable phone and it performs everyday tasks wonderfully. But when you can get the SII now for $100 or less, I just don't see why you'd want to lock into 2 years with a phone that is already a year old.
Plus, if you're a gamer, you definitely want to go with SII and not the Infuse. The RAM difference makes some games not be "compatible" with the Infuse.
To be honest, stay away from Samsung phones. I have two, a captivate and a infuse. I'm over Samsung because of the way they shelve their phones after a couple of months and all the problems in their software. I bought an Atrix 2 and its the best phone i have ever had. At first i wasnt sure about it because its a moto phone. Now that i have had it awhile i recommend this phone to anyone. Best battery life, 4 gb of space for apps and i got an over the air update on the second day of me having the phone. Its on the list for a ics update too. I have not had one single problem with this phone. Just my opinion but i would not get a samsung.

I also wouldn't recommend the Infuse. I love mine, but it seems to be considered "dead" in AT&T's eyes.

I guess I'm a Samsung fan boy. I have always had a Samsung, even before smart phones. I had a Captivate which I gave to my wife when I went with an Infuse. Really love the big screen and I would get a Note if I had the money.....Really doesn't matter if AT&t never pushes out any updates, because I am running CM7.
I recommend the Galaxy S II (i777). I like the Infuse and Skyrocket, but the i777 is perfect. I'd also recommend the Skyrocket over the Infuse, purely because of the RAM difference. The Infuse can't be my daily device, because I need more RAM. So, in my opinion . . .
Galaxy S II (i777) > Skyrocket > Infuse
Samsung may have its issues with software, but theres no denying that their products are well made. Almost everything in my house is made by Samsung. They never die.
That aside, what is your budget and requirements? If you have the money and like the size, get a Note. I've heard nothing but good things about it and developers here are already playing with it. There doesn't seem to be any love for the Skyrocket though. If you're strapped for cash, I'd definately look into the Infuse. The price fluctuates from $50 to free sometimes, so you might get a great deal on one. It's one of the best phones I've ever had. All of the software issues have already been resolved by the devs here. While it may be a little dated by 2012 standards, it handles almost everything I throw at it and you just can't brick it. That's something those ****ty HTCs and Motorolas can't claim.

Not bad
The infuse is a nice phone from what I have experienced. Doesn't look like it will get CM9 though so I would avoid it.
The screen is absolutely beautiful despite it's pitiful resolution. The colors are stunning and viewable from all angles making pictures better looking than what you took a picture of! Also sometimes I forget I am reading off of my phone when using google books and think it's my kindle.
RAM is pitiful (512?! Really Samsung??) but the phone operates smoothly despite.
Battery life is better than anything HTC has to offer.
I am personally looking for an Atrix 4g and it's laptop dock. Pretty sweet combo.
I got the skyrocket. Nice phone.

Debating on new phone: Galaxy Nexus or SGS3??!!

Hey guys, I'm planning on getting a new phone contract and I'm really debating on 2 phones.. the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S3.
I'm right now using a Nexus S which I'm really happy with but Rogers is offering a really nice plan extremely better than my actual one and cheaper.
I'm just looking for some opinions from you guys to help me chose.
Thanks.
I never understood this kind of a question. It is just too subjective with so many factors. If having the latest and greatest software is important go with a Nexus. If not....you really need to compare and decide what is right for you. They are both great phones. I suggest handling them both and get a good feel for each.

S3 is supposedly getting updated to JB late in the fourth quarter 2012.
If you can wait, well then I say go for the S3, if not then go with the Nexus. Personally, my opinion is to grab the S3. You are on XDA after all! Grab yourself a custom Jelly Bean ROM! (The devs are everywhere on the S3 thread, expect one to come out soon if it hasn't come already.)
Definitely the s3 if you are a rooter or not because even tho the s3 doesn't have jelly bean officially its definitely worth the wait. The s3 has a faster processor, better screen, more ram, bigger battery, and overall newer hardware! Its worth the wait for jelly bean!

SGSIII if you like modding, installing new ROM's etc,
Nexus if not as you will get the latest firmware more or less first.
hi maxx1601! i've a galaxy nexus and personally i think is the best android phone for some reason: first it's the official google phone, so the android developing is based on it and with jelly bean google resolved the few ICS's bugs; second it has a dual core cpu (is enough for all android operation and using, we don't need more), that make battery good against the gsIII that has in my opinion too many power enhancements like quad core cpu ecc. that cause battery drain under android, has got a user interface that is second to google pure UI, that personally love; gsIII has olso a too big display ( nexus display is enough bigger, good for browsing, gaming, texting, using apps like maps and google earth that need a large display). my advice is to buy the galaxy nexus, and don't forgot, the price is olso a good thing to keep in mind it costs only 399 $ now ( mabe less i don't know) and is full supported for updates by google and developers that have a solid base made by google. i hope it helps, I wish you have a good choice! :fingers-crossed:

Agreed. HOX worth consideration... Amazing screen, hardware and build quality. Upgraded from GNex and very happy I did. Screens side by side makes AMOLED cringe worthy.

And samsung was supposed to have ICS for most of their phones in the first quarter and didnt release them until the 3rd quarter. Thats probably the nicest thing about owning the nexus you know that you will get the updates and you will get them on time. The SIII will get support for updates until the next flagship samsung phone comes out and then they will put it on the back burner just like they did with the SII, skyrocket etc... That was the most frustrating part when i had my skyrocket, i had a phone that was less than a year old, had decent hardware and i knew it would probably never get updated past ICS, because once the SIII came out samsung and AT&T had moved on.

Hey ive got an Galaxy Nexus now for over two month and I must say its just awesome, especially in combination with these forums (There are tons of good roms for the GNEX=
The best part about the phone is the stock android experience but thats personal preference.
I also tested the S3 and its a great phone but i dont like the Samsung custom Software that much.
I've had the Galaxy s3 for about a month now and love it.the camera options are awesome, decent selection of ROMs available and some cool compatibility programs if you have dlna devices at home.
Samsung Galaxy SIII (SPH-L710)

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.

Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

im going for the sgs3. depends on how much its going for in Feb as thats my next upgrade
its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.

I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!

Lost my beloved Inspire 4G, what to get next?

After almost two years with my Inspire, I'm very sad to have lost it, up til the end on jellytime was awesome and it was a new era.
Now I need to get a new phone, and the market seems overwhelming. I saw the developer RandomBlame from Jellytime being pretty happy with the nexus 4, but I'm not so sure I can live without a SD card slot.
I'm interested in reading about experiences from other people who for one reason or another have migrated from an Inspire/DHD to something else.
You guys who used to love you're Inspire/DHD, what phone made you equally or more happy? What phone do you regret going for thinking it would compensate for the ACE you had?
Happy New Year, D.
Sorry about your loss...my condolences.
From the DHD forums, this might help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396842.

HTC Inspire to HTC One X. Many friends of mine did this transition and are very happy with their switch!
I dont know if you can wait for a while and how you feel about BB, but the Z10 has amazing specs. I currently use the Inspire 4g and will give BB a look when its come out. Thats if it comes to ATT, which I think it would.
New phone

That sucks that you lost it. When looking I had my list narrowed down to three phones: HTC One X, Samsung Note 2, and Samsung Galaxy SIII. All three have good specs but it is up to you what you prefer more. I decided the Note series was just too big. I would have to use two hands to operate it and figured if I was going to do that I would buy a tablet first. Loved the HTC but the killer for me was the lack of SD card expansion and the lack of changing out the battery. Ultimately the S3 was my final choice. Love it so far. Had it rooted by the second day and have been cruising along with it for over a month now.
I'm hearing that there will be an SGS4 coming in April 2013.

I love my inspire as well, however even using the cyanogrnmod 10.1 unofficial sporting android 4.2.1 isn't enough to compensate for poor battery performance. I have had the phone around a year. I think I am sold on getting the Galaxy Note 2. With its huge battery and juggernaut hardware specs I could get two or three years use out of it. Not to mention it has an SD card slot which I too love.

Agreed battery is garbage. I'm not quite sold on the note 2. More sold on og note. Mainly cause I don't think my wife would be happy if I blew 600 bucks on a phone. Also I really like not being in a contract we have been contract free for about a year.

My friend recently got the Z10 he says the only downfall of the device is no native Instagram  I myself had the pleasure of playing around with the phone and its really spectacular, Id choose it over an Iphone but not an android. If your thinking of staying with Android the Galaxy Note 2 is the perfect direction to go
I went with RAZR maxx HD over the DNA. Battery life is insanely good. I just couldn't go HTC again.

i still have my inspire, will prob be sticking with it for a while i just bought a new battery for it. Holding up good for now. im due for an up grade in two months will see then for sure. I am with att and they suck because would like to try the razr or something different like dna. If Verizon got better service around my area would prob switch.
