When i flash a kernel do i need to flash the boot.img from fastboot? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Do i need to flash the boot.img from the kernel from fastboot before installing the kernel from recovery? Or if this is completely wrong and im crazy, could someone correct me
Many thanks!

Depends on your Hboot. I'd downgrade it if yours is 1.14 or higher

[Q] boot.img universal?

Hey guys. Noob question and all but i've only had this phone on a custom rom for an hour.
Is the boot.img image compatible with any ROM? As in does each one need a different boot.img file or could i just keep one copy?
Thanks.
Huzi.
If you're unlocked through htcdev then you'll need to flash boot image each time you flash a new ROM, some roms may well work with others boot image, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Each ROM well need its own boot image, which you'll have to extract from ROM and flash separately

So if I use say unrevoked and revolutionary I won't have to keep flashing the boot.img file through adb?

True, they would give you true s off in which case you don't need to bother with separately flashing boot image, but whether you can use that method depends on which version of hboot your device has

Well I have hboot version 2.00.0002 which I just found out does not support revolutionary. I need to downgrade to 0.98 first. Thanks for clarifying that.

What is the benefit of S-Off?

Like the title says, what does s-off enable us to do?
Reading the q and a forum thoroughly is the answer

With s-off you can also flash radios, also splash screens and boot.img (kernel) from recovery with out using fastboot.

Yep and regarding the boot.img and fastboot, to be more exact you won't have to extract the boot.img from a custom rom you want to flash and then flash the boot.img thru fastboot as you can just flash a custom rom and it will also flash the boot.img along with the custom rom using your recovery. I guess it's less of a hassle and with s-off you can also downgrade your hboot that will allow you to removed the tampered text from the bootloader and remove the red text from the splash screen!!!

AOKP curious

I was wondering, im on viperXL rom and was curious to know if i have to flash a boot.img when using AOKP

if you are s-on then yes if s-off depends if the dev has scripting in his rom to flash the boot.img then you dont. just fastboot flash the boot .img to be safe it took longer to make this post than to flash it
If you are not s-off I recommend you do so. It is simple to do and well worth it.

yes i can, only extract the rom.zip and flash it via fastboot whit fastboot flash zip
No you can't. That's only flashing the ROM component of the RUU, it doesn't flash any of the other components, you might as well just flash a stock ROM if you're going to do that.

You never answered if you are s-off or s-on.
What is the current condition of the phone? If you tried to flash the JB RUU while SuperCID and S-on, flashing anything isn't going to recover you. Its bricked.

HTC One X AT&T Stuck in Boot Loop After Flash

Hi, my AT&T HTC One X is running CM10.2 with S-ON. However, on boot, sometimes the device puts itself into a boot loop. You then need to reflash the boot.img from the computer to the phone. Is there any way I can stop this? Thanks.
Nope, not with your current setup. If you're s-on you need to flash the boot.img with fastboot every time you flash a ROM. Don't even bother trying to boot into a ROM after flashing it without first flashing the boot.img via fastboot. If it has booted sometimes without flashing the boot.img, it's because the boot.img that was left over from the previous ROM is somewhat compatible with the new ROM you flashed, this is not optimal of course. If you don't want to have to flash the boot.img anymore, get s-off. Having s-off removes the restriction that causes the boot.img to not be flashed in TWRP when flashing the ROM.

You misunderstood me. I did flash boot.img and I'm still having boot loops.

Have you read the cm10.2 thread? There have been major problems with getting that ROM to boot recently.

Where is the CM10.2 thread?

Really? It's in the development section. If you don't even know where the thread is I think I can pretty safely assume you haven't read it. If you're having problems with a ROM please read the ROM thread before cluttering up the forum with an unnecessary new thread. To be honest, recovering from a bootloop is about as simple as it gets, you should know how to do that before beginning to flash ROMs.
