What phone should I switch to? - General Questions and Answers

I'm currently using a Droid 3 on Page Plus's $30 plan. It's not a bad phone, but I want ICS.
I'm considering switching over to T-Mobile on their $30 1500 minute/30 MB, since I won't need much data due to the city wide Wi-Fi on my college campus. What phones would you recommend that are:
1. Under $200 on eBay (used)
2. Run ICS
3. At least a qHD display
T-Mobile actually has a deal today for an LG Optimus L9 for $200 + a $50 prepaid card. Are there any better phones on eBay for that price, or should I just buy that one?
Thanks in advance.

I know u said under 200 but if you can get another 100 u can get a nexus 4 from the pay store. If u can't just search eBay for T-Mobile phones and put a max of 200. I'm sure there are better phones out there for your price point but just gotta keep searching

I did consider saving up for the Nexus 4, but I have a music library of about 32GB, so I don't think it would work for me.
Paying effectively $150 for that LG is mighty tempting I must say.

Keep searching and when you find a phone you may want u can watch a review of that device on YouTube and see if u like it

The LG Optimus L9 today is a very good buy at $200 + $50 prepaid card which you could easily flip on ebay for $40+.
However, if you look hard enough you might be able to score a used sensation or galaxy nexus, which have heavy dev support in comparison to the optimus.

So. Who's getting one?

The phone is definitely enticing; always being a lover of big screened phones (On att, using a Captivate now) I love the design of the phone.
Of course im going ti wait until MWC to do anything; I have an upgrade and I plan on making ot a great one.

I'm totally on this one. I love my Nexus One, but I'm craving something with a little more power. A 2nd gen Snapdragon should be fine for me for around 2 years, especially since I'm using the money I make flipping my Nexus One to put towards a new tablet (hopefully a dual core HTC Honeycomb tablet). I'll still tinker with my phone a lot, but I want a tablet to be my next droolworthy device.
So yeah, I'll be at my local AT&T store when they open on the 13th to get mine. Can't wait to see CM7 and ADW EX running on that sexy hardware.
Moved to general as not android development
I'm definitely getting one!
I always had HTC phones and I loved them all. Made the switch to a Blackberry last year because of work now I can't wait to put the Blackberry in storage for the Inspire
By the way, I read that the non-commitment price would be $499. Is that confirmed?
Just wish it had a Front Facing camera That's the only thing that is making me want the Atrix/Infuse over the Inspire
I'm just gonna buy one retail, that's how I get most of my phones nowadays anyway. I'll save my contract renewal for something big. I'm fairly excited for this device
Just pre-ordered one.

radio shack is having a pre-order for the Inspire from now until the 9th. you have to buy a $50.00 gift card to secure your order, they are selling the phone for $99.00 with no mail-in rebate. you also get a $30.00 store credit for using to buy accessories for the phone. you have to buy the $25.00 data plan as well. I already have the $30.00 unlimited and I asked if I get to keep it and they said yes (we will see)
"I already have the $30.00 unlimited and I asked if I get to keep it and they said yes (we will see)" - I really hope we don't get screwed into this 200mb cap...
I'm getting one - 8 more days guys!
It all depends on weather the 30 dollar unlimited data plan was already on a smartphone if not they will move you to the 2gig 25 dollar data plan
XDA app on CM7
I plan on waking up at the ass-crack of dawn and heading to the local AT&T Corporate Store 15 or 20 minutes before they open to pick one up the 13th.
My upgrade isn't up until the 8th so I can't preporder yet, I don't think. Talk about nice timing for an upgrade though!
Those those talking about your unlimited data plan and if you're going to lose it...
No, you won't.
AT&T is trying to tell me that I, a current iPhone user, with unlimited data, will lose it when I move to the Inspire. Well, they're wrong.
AT&T FAQ said:
Q: I am using a Smartphone Data Unlimited Plan. Do I need to sign up for a DataPlus or DataPro plan instead? Can I switch Between these New Data Plans As Needed?
A: If you were on a Smartphone Data Unlimited plan prior to June 7th, 2010, and would prefer to keep it, no problem! Even if you choose to upgrade to a new Smartphone and/or extend your contract. You may choose to move from your unlimited plan to either a DataPlus or DataPro plan. However, once you have moved to a DataPlus or DataPro plan, your old unlimited plan will no longer be available.

Honestly I hate the whole 1230mAh size too.
And in regards to the FFC I don't really see the point of it other than the 3 second WOW factor when first buying.
If that is going to save us from spending an additional 50 - 100 dollars Id rather save that money for something else.
I've been snooping around and it seems as if in the U.K. there are Desire HD aftermarket batteries with 1500 mAh.
I don't see why they can't sell/make them available in the U.S.
For $99, and even less if you buy through RadioShack because of the FREE $30 gift card you can't go wrong.

In a bind and need some help

Ok, right to the point, I need some money, real fast. I had an idea and need to know if it will work. Could I sell my inspire for about $300, keep my sim card, buy a cheap phone, like, an iphone2G, pop in the sim, and use it just like nothing happend, would that work? or would I have to do someting in order for it to work. My bill is due on thursday and im not gonna be able to pay it. It must be payed by then or they will shut off my service. I love this phone, but I need the money, not just to pay my bill, but other reasons as well. What do you guys think? I can always go back and buy a better phone later on, not worried about that now.
Opinions needed.
I think you'll have a hard time gettin $300 out of it when they can be had for so much cheaper now, new.

alright, what do you think is a reasonable price?
That's really dependent on its condition and how good a salesman you are or how bad the potential buyer wants the phone..
Best Buy has it for $0.... So good luck

A quick check on eBay shows many used Inspire auctions in progress with bids in the $250 - $300 range. You can't compare a free phone at Best Buy to this, because that free phone comes with a $1500 contract. People will pay much higher than the carrier subsidized price to get a contract-free phone.

thats kinda what I was gonna say... I dont see whats wrong with $300 or maybe $250, its in MINT condition, its been in a otterbox defender the whole time, so absolutely nothing wrong with it. If i had to Id throw in the 16GB class 10 SD as well.
Edit: BTW Its about a month and a half old
My real question was, if i sell it, will who ever buys it be able to use it with their own SIM Card, since i still have service and am under contract, would i be able to keep my sim and use another phone?

I bought ans Aria, then about a year later, bought an Inspire using an upgrade option on another account, but I don't have any problems using the Aria SIM in my Inspire, nor any other combinations of phones and SIMs on the other accounts in my plan (I have 4 total accounts in my plan). Also, I loaned my wife's Aria to a friend that had some AT&T non-smart phone and he plugged his SIM into it and it worked fine. His wife has a data plan with her iPhone on the same account and it worked fine without even upgrading to another data plan.
In short, the SIM is the account and the phone doesn't matter. You shouldn't have any problems.
For a good comparison for asking price check craigslist.org. See what they are going for on there. You could also post an ad to sell it there.

Exactly, 300 is a fair price and what is to be expected for a fairly used contract free Inspire. A new one can go as high as 425 off contact.

Reminds me of a joke from "Larry The Cable-Guy" about crashing your truck to get the insurance money to make the truck payment....
One thing you'll need to do is call AT&T to change your data plan to an iPhone data plan. Nothing will change with the rate, but they have two types of plans. One is a smartphone plan that our Inspires use. The other is an iPhone plan with the same data/cost, but they need to know or you won't be able to do anything on it. Other than that, yes, you should be able to do this no problem.

T-Mobile HTC One S (US) Pricing.

Looks like Pricing for the HTC One S (US Tmobile version) was leaked or so tech article reads. Same price as HTC one X on AT&T w/ 2 year contract and $50 rebate. Should have been cheaper IMO.
http://www.bostonherald.com/busines...hone_users_in_ecstasy/srvc=home&position=also
Sorry if this is not helpful to anyone.
I'm more interested in the Retail off contract price. That's listed at $599 right now. Also it looks like the T-Mobile version isn't the MAO version. I was really looking forward to the MAO version despite all of the issues with it.
What bothers me the most is that AT&T will probably sell the higher classed HTC One X for the same price off contract. So Tmobile is overpricing their HTC One S seeing how it very obviously lies a tier below the One X according to HTC.
I understand it's Tmobile's flagship phone right now, but you still have to price it according to everything else on the market and not just what is available on your own network... that's how you lose customers.

Agreed. I am a little disappointed but I guess I will just deal with it... Thanks for the link.
Yeah bigger screen and higher resolution. Also LTE... so if you consider the things that people look for in a phone as screen size, processor, screen resolution, storage size, and network speed... then the AT&T HTC One X has larger screen, higher resolution, and faster network speed. So 3 of the 5 things people look for in new phones are a "generation" above the Tmobile HTC One S.
I don't really care about most of those things within reason which is why the HTC One S appeals to me. It's the right balance. That being said it's still lower end than the One X... even in the version AT&T is getting.
This is a huge Tmobile fail imo. Most of us will suck it up and buy it anyway, but like I said... that's not how to make a customer happy.

its not just bigger, its a IPS panel with 720p, which make it the best on the market today. One X also has NFC
also looks like no MAO after all the hype. Is that a good thing.....I dont know.
I just wish I knew if ATT coverage was same or better then Tmobile in Boston area, then I would just switch to ATT and get One X with pretty much zero compromises vs One S
AT&T 3G frequencies?
Anybody knows if the T-mobile HTC One S version also supports the AT&T 850/1900 3G frequencies? The T-Mobile support forum says yes, but the specs on the website do not specify them. If it does, then I would buy it full price, unlock it and use it on the AT&T network (the international unlocked version of the One S is missing the 1900 3G band).
Thanks.
Cell companies price all new phones at the same price off contract. An off contract phone should be no more than 400.00 to 450.00. They price them high so you feel like you are getting value with a 200.00 on contract price.

Looks like if you Buy this through Costco.com you can get it for $189 w/2 year contract plus $25 costco cash card and free accessories. Free shipping too. There is no MIR either. Best deal out there so far. you can pre-order it now too. But you have to select a data plan from them when buying that will run you $35 or 65$ a month. Cheaper to go through T-mobile.

LTE is a joke on ATT and Sprint, but T-Mobile hasnt even started rolling it....
I wonder how is ATT's HSPA+ network. I am always afraid to switch to ATT, I just dont know a single person with ATT network in Boston area
I have two issues. 1. Screen size (like everyone is saying) 2. The bigger issue for me is the potential lower resolution for hooking up to a monitor. Although I don't know if movies will have the same resolution, I would love to hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while connecting to my TV for web surfing and more. Right now I bring my laptop and do that for watching movies and internet video presentations on the web for family, friends, and work. The thing is, for the price, I might as well buy a tablet with hdmi out and keep my old phone for tethering purposes.
Additionally, with smartphone makers listening to the market for future innovations, the message is muddled by carrier contracts and business models. In other words, carriers needs will overshadow consumers, and companies like HTC will wonder why their market share isn't doing better for the "allowed" upgrades. IMO, this is why tablets like the kindle and nook are so limited (using nook to type this).
Does anyone know what the early upgrade price will be?
I just ordered it from best buy, kept the same plan I had Unlimited Data throttled at 5gb. $199 free shipping. $223 after taxes and upgrade fees. Ships out the 22nd and says will be at my door step the 24th. That's according to Best buy. Will see.

I think early upgrade fee is like $404 or something close to that. If you have been a longtime T-Mobile customer they will usually give you a full upgrade if you ask for the customer loyalty dept. Ask what's the best price they can give you on your plan and phone because your interested in switching to At&t for the One X.
They should hook you up. I've done this 6 months ago and they gave me a $200 account credit and full upgrades on 2 of my lines when I wasn't due for almost 14 months. Been with T-Mobile for 10 years best at trying to keep customers.

Switching from iPhone to Android

Hey,
Im currently an iPhone user (4S 64GB factory unlocked) and want to switch to android.
Im in a contract with telus that ends in september and am thinking of renewing it. The phones they carry that interest me are the One X and the S2 X, unfortunately they dont have the galaxy nxs anymore. Otherwise i could switch to a provider that carries the nexus.
I want a phone with a good development which still has newer components. I'm not a fan of the s3. And I like good build quality!
Opinions?
I would just get a GSM Nexus. They are so damn cheap anyway.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Nexus
I would take the Nexus. There you have the latest Android updates and a big screen
the One X is a great phone, I highly recommend it
Welcome to the light.. I also left the Iphone and its the best decision I've made. I would also recommend the GSM Nexus! We have 2 in the family and they love it.
Android really rules!

definitely nexus bro! my friend use it and the ROM update is a lot faster than S3.
I've written extensively on why you shouldn't sign a contract in general, or choose your phone based on your provider.

The price differential over 24 months adds up.
For example, T-mobile has a $30 100 minute 5 gig prepaid, and Straight Talk has a $45 unlimited prepaid; there are others to shop around for, but those are the most commonly cited. Assuming you even get the cheapest Verizon plan, $40 (450 minutes talk) + $10 (1000 smses) + $30 (2 gb data) = $80 (per month)
Verizon's $80/month is already $35/month more than ST. That means you save $840 over 24 months by going even the more expensive prepaid. (Compared to this, the puny $200 subsidy is nothing.)
For the t-mobile plan, the differential is a whopping $50, and you save, holy hell, $1200 over 24 months.
In other words, the subsidy is just a psychological scam make you think you've got a discount, when really, the higher prices per month make all the difference.

Buying a phone outright gets you more flexibility and, if you go with prepaid, lower costs overall. As you said, you have to wait > 18 months to get a new one under your plan [and you'd have lost out, with your increased rates, if you don't]. I can get my next phone anytime [and am subject to low rates all the time]. My nexus, for example, is definitely good for this year, but I don't want to count on my prophetical powers for anything longer. If it gets broken, or just plain outclassed, I want to be able to grab the newest thing on the market right away.

However, you will probably have to do the prepaid research yourself, since all the current research seems to be for the US. (In particular, you should calculate that my conclusions above are still valid for your options.) The lack of a $350 Nexus in Canada also sucks; I think you can get it for around $400.

Good call on switching from the dark side!
I would either go with the Nexus or the One X. I've used both phones briefly, and they are both quick and solid. If I had to choose one of them, I'd go with the Nexus... it IS Google's baby after all.
HTC One X
Superb Phone really enjoying it!
I'd reconsider the S3. Exchangeable battery (you'd be surprised how important this could be, especially if you are switching from Apple) plus microSD (ditto). If you are all over the phone shell material, go for the One Z.
Good Choice

Android is better in almost all categories except screen res and camera quality
I own both the iPhone and some Android devices, mostly Samsungs and I wouldn't say that any of the them is better than the other. They are just different, both have good and bad sides. I am definitely having more fun modifying and hacking Androids while I prefer iPhone for everyday calling. What I really dislike is bias in any direction. It doesn't matter though since you've already made a decision. Then in your place I would get a Nexus. It's solid, looks good and gets the most frequent updates.

[Q] need new phone

I am in need of a new phone, without resigning. I'm just going to continue with my plan off contract or switch to monthly 4g maybe. I'm on T-mobile and am coming from and Optimus T. What is good out there that is around $200? I've been lusting over the SGS2 but its over my budget everywhere I have found one Thinking the Sensation or the Optimus L9. I will root it for sure and maybe rom if needed.I heard T-mobile say the iPhone will be available in a few months, probably the iPhone 5 which is just fine by me. That's kinda what I'm waiting for unless I find a sweet droid. I do know and want the Nexus 4 but 350 is certainly too high for me right now. like I said, I'm on a budget.
Anyway, I appreciate any input.
Thanks

I will root it for sure and maybe rom if needed.I heard T-mobile say the iPhone will be available in a few months, probably the iPhone 5 which is just fine by me. That's kinda what I'm waiting for unless I find a sweet droid. I do know and want the Nexus 4 but 350 is certainly too high for me right now. like I said, I'm on a budget.
Anyway, I appreciate any input.
Thanks

If ur looking for new off contract then the nexus 4 is a good deal. how many new high end phones can u find for 350 no contract? But if ur on a budget life u said then used phone may have to be the way
You should be able to find a used S2 in decent condition for around $200 on eBay. Not sure what the Galaxy Nexus is going for now, the N4 is scarce so it might still be over $200.
I think the S2 used is your best bet.
You can get an iPhone 4 for around $200, too. The iPhone 5 is like.... Way more than $200. Are you saying you're willing to sign a contract again for it or what?

no contract. my goal is to go to a carrier with an iPhone after the next one is announced. Don't want to be locked in then see the new one and not get it on my carrier. I would get nexus 4 but its sold out all the time and just over my budget. I keep trying ebay for the sgs2 but I end up over 250 and that's too high for me. I'm really trying to take my time but am starting to get impatient.
