[Q] Unlocked Thunderbolt unable to root - General Questions and Answers

I think I might have a bit of a unique problem.
I recently received a replacement HTC Thunderbolt.
I have managed to unlock it using the HTCDev tool.
I can't figure out how to root it.
I can't use the all in one tool because according to the creator of the tool:
"Oh wow, that is an unknown bootloader, which tells me you have a true test device
I don't think that there is anything you can do to downgrade that, but you can HTCDev unlock and root from there."
I pulled this info from a recent log
Phone is normally booted
RAW BBHERE "/system/bin/sh: /system/xbin/busybox: not found "
RAW HASBB "no"
Bootloader: 2.25.0000 Unknown
ADB rooted: No
ROM Version: 3.14.605.12 710RD - Android 4.0.3
Superuser: binary v/system/bin/sh
I've searched and searched and searched but I can't find a guide or walk through or info in general on how to root an unlocked thunderbolt that is running 4.0.3 (not to mention the unknown bootloader).
If I could get any help on this that would be awesome. My old Thunderbolt was rooted and running Thundershed 1.6. I can't stand the battery life on 4.0.3. I pulled the battery from my old phone and put it in the new phone. My battery life has gone from 12+ hours to under 4.
Thank's in advance.

[Q] Unrevoked doesn't work for me!

Hi, everyone. I tried to root the HTC Gratia/Aria.
On windows (NOOBZ: The EASY guide to rooting your Aria and Installing Attn1's ROM (Win XP/Vista)) the program remains on "Waiting for root" and if I reboot manualy it fails. So I have tried with linux: I used a bootable usb (Ubuntu LiveCD with ADB and Unrevoked Recovery installer(Guide)). Again no luck : the terminal says "Error: n = -1,errno = 19 (No such device)" and the program gives me "Internal error: failed to unlock nand flash".
Any Hint??How can I root the Gratia/Aria?
Thx for all,
Nando

There are a couple of things that may be coming into play here.
1. Is this really an HTC Gratia and is it running Android 2.2? If so then Unrevoked can not root this version at this time.
2. If by luck you actually have an Aria and it is still running Android 2.1, then you need to download and use Unrevoked 3.21. The most recent version of Unrevoked 3.31 has an issue with some Android 2.1 devices such as the Aria.
Ops...I have an HTC Gratia with Android 2.2...I'll be waiting for news.
Thx for all!
Is it just the HTC Aria (S31HT, by Emobile in Japan, running 2.2) that has a write protection on the system folder, or is this the issue with all HTC Aria models running 2.2?
Several Japanese pages contain comments that due to this fact this specific model might never be rootable.

It woiuld seem that any HTC Aria/Gratia that is shipped with 2.2 (or more specifically HBOOT 1.0) is not rootable at this point.
Yes the hboot is what is holding you up. The hole they used to root the older hboots has been plugged. So you are just going to have to wait.
I see. Thank you both for confirming that for me.
that's happening to me too
hi, my friend wants to root his aria but he's got the same NAND unlock problem..
his aria came with 2.1 and he then got the official upgrade to 2.2.
this thread suggests that the hboot is the problem but surely an upgrade to 2.2 wouldnt change the hboot?
pls help
EDIT: he seems to have hboot 1.02.000 which means that he won't be able to root?

yes the official upgrade to 2.2 WILL change the hboot so no, he cannot root.

[Q] Debranding or roothing HTC s510e

I am in China and I bought an HTC s510e last week, that was made in Taiwan.
When I look at the boot menu screen, is says my phone is locked, although when I put a SIM card from another country in there it doesn't ask me for an unlock code. Perhaps the phone is locked to China?
Now my main problem is that there is constantly all kinds of Chinese software being installed on my phone without my knowing, and there seems to be no way of uninstalling most of it, and what I can uninstall, gets installed again soon after.
I am thinking the solution might be debranding the phone, or rooting the phone.
However, I can't figure out which ROM to put on there that won't brick the phone and that will still allow me to read and write Chinese (using pinyin). The menus should be in English of course.
Some information on the phone:
HTC s510e
Android version 2.3.5
HTC Sense version 3.0
Software number 2.10.401.5

I kind of know next to nothing about the subject, would be very grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks
i hope any one help you
correction
This is a correction to my previous post
On my boot screen, where is says HBOOT-2.00.002 I should have written HBOOT-2.00.0002, don't know if this makes any difference.
I have tried rooting my phone using SuperOneClick. The phone is rooted, or so it says, but SuperUser can't get any superuser privileges. Unrooting doesn't work, the program freezes.
No BusyBox on the phone yet, tried installing it, but can't because SuperUser doesn't have the necessary privileges.
Installed ROM Manager, flashed a ROM recovery image with it, but that's about all I can do with the RM, doesn't want to back up my ROM, doesn't boot into recovery.
I can boot into recovery manually after shutting down the phone, but once in recovery....I get a red triangle and have to take my battery out and reinsert it to get the phone working again.
I tried unlocking the bootloader through the htcDev center, but I first have to update something on my phone, I chose a couple of possibilities in their list provided but nothing worked, couldn't update. (By the way, I can't update the ROM on my phone either, for some reason I get an error message. Perhaps because my phone is not set to receive OTA updates?)
As you guys can see....I don't know where to start or what to do, nothing seems to have any effect. Already happy nothing of what I did bricked the thing.
Would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. How to unlock the bootloader? How to root properly?
Thanks in advance.
Okay, here is how I did it.
I ran SuperOneClick a few more times, it got rid of the useless Superuser application, but still said my phone was rooted.
I unlocked my bootloader through the HTCDev website. It asked me to first update my bootloader, I skipped the step since that didn't work. Now my bootloader is unlocked no problem.
In stead of trying to root my phone any further (it said it was rooted but didn't seem to be properly rooted), I downloaded the AndroidSDK, got into my phone with adb shell command.
Tricky part:
-the thing wouldn't let me remove any file, giving me read-only error
-also wouldn't let me change file permissions, same error
-solution: first give a adb root command, which will give you root privileges, then you give a adb remount command which makes all files read and write.
Next you can use adb shell, and from there follow the normal steps to remove files. At the end I left the shell and gave a adb reboot command, rebooting the phone.
I got rid of the most annoying junk on my phone. Wouldn't mind to find a way to have the thing properly rooted, but for now I'm happy with what I got.

unlocked bootloader but now having problems rooting

hello everyone i just recieved an htc sensation as an insurance phone since my g2x stopped working . i loved that phone and it was super fast but this is all t-mobile said they could give me. Anyways i have it and now i wanna flash different roms lol.
So i went through the process of getting the code from htcdev.com and unlocking the bootloader. But now when i try and root it from the "HTC All in One Rooting Tool Kit" using the one_x program, it doesnt work. It lets me reboot into recovery but then when i click on the root button and press enter in cmd box all it says is device not found or something like that. So my question is, is when its in bootloader can the computer still recognize the phone from the usb cord or is there something else i should do first?
think i have the same problem
hey, just got my brand new htc today, i have been able to unlock my bootloader via htcdev, all went well....but s-on my hboot is 1.27.0000 which is the issue!!!
from what i have found currently revolutionary method for s-off isnt currently supported.....
i have ICS installed 4.0.3, dam you carphonewarehouse lol
still searching and looking, does anyway have any further info, how to s-off,ROOT, or install a custom rom? or do i just have ti wait???

[Q] Help with Stock O2 UK RUU

HTC Sensation XE
Networked unlocked (was previously locked to O2)
I acquired the phone via courier and ordered through O2.co.uk
Android: 4.0.3
Software: 3.32.206.151
Sense: 3.6
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT: 1.27.0000
Carrier ID: O2___001
Kernal: 3.0.16-gc764bfb
Baseband: 11.69A.3504.00U_11.23.3504.07_M2
Build: 3.32.206.151 CL348082-release keys
Using a Windows XP SP3 machine for running android SDK etc.
Hello!!
I have recently moved providers and wanted to install a non-O2 HTC 4.0.3 on my device.
I have no experience of rooting or anything beyond installing .apks not sourced from Google Play.
I went about reading through a ton of tutorials and learned that I needed to unlock my Bootloader, root/SU the device, make S-OFF, flash the recovery, and then I would be in a position to put another non-O2 ROM on.
I found this thread and as it seemed to be related to a respected XDA member, decided to follow it
http://www.flow-wolf.net/2012/09/how-to-root-your-htc-sensation-xe-4g.html
and got the bootloader unlocked.
After getting SU/Root (a prerequisite for using the Wire Trick) via this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632553
I began to work my way through http://www.flow-wolf.net/2012/09/how-to-s-off-htc-sensation-xe-4g.html to get S-OFF. However when running ControlBear.exe in ControlBearRelease_pyramid_ICS_WIN, I was getting a "unable to create secondary backup" error, or something very similar. Google led me to http://unlimited.io/jbtroubleshooting.htm "This is often caused by a Custom ROM or having HTC Sync installed on your PC."
So I uninstalled HTC Sync, went through the process again but the error persisted.
So I do not have a custom ROM installed as far as I know, but maybe the term "custom" refers to anything that is a modification of the installation that the device was shipped with. I honestly can't remember which Android version the phone was running when I got it.
My question is, it is worth me trying to roll back to whichever version was probably shipped with the device? If it is, where would I find exactly what I'm looking for? I read through this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425 but can't find any downloadable RUUs that have a CID of 001 in, and as I said, I'm not sure which version I would need to look for.
No one will die if I have to keep the O2 software on the phone, but as a last resort I am posting here in the hope that someone will point out the obvious/call me an ignorant n00b etc. but ultimately point me in the right direction
Thank you!
if you just want to flash custom rom then you can do it without S-OFF
see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
note: by the way for the controlbear.exe use usb 2.0 ports not 3.0(it is more preferable the back one)
install htc drivers
uninstall htc sync as you said
enable usb debugging mode from settings
also you have the original stock rom(since you are on S-ON(i assume also LOCKED)

Problems rooting HTC Status AT&T

Hi,
I bought an HTC Status AT&T unlocked (I am currently in Germany) and try to root it, in order to erase all anoying AT&T apps and link SD to have more memory.
I read and try a lot of stuff to root it but still stuck on the first step: having S-OFF. For example using HTCdev to unlock the bootloader works just find, without throwing any error, but no getting S-OFF.
The info of my cellphone is:
Android: 2.3.3
HTC Sense: 2.1
Software: 1.23.502.1
If any further information is needed just ask.
Thanks!
