I installed the OTA tonight after I ran Voodoo Root Keeper. CWM installed the update. I was playing around with my Call Recorder and ALSA and had to reboot the phone a couple of times. After one of those reboots the phone displayed a warning from Verizon ... something along the lines of I had unauthorized software installed and to take my phone to a Verizon location. I could not get the phone to boot into recovery. My only option was ODIN to an older version, re-root and restore to a Nandroid I did before installing the OTA. I have not seen that message from Verizon before so not sure if it's something new or not but I will not install an OTA again. Also not sure why the message was displayed.
You installed the ota update with cwm?

Why just not Odin to stock, take the ota then reroot?

I agree with Hulk0069. I think it's safe to say that if this happens multiple times for people who accepted the OTA via CWM, their bootloader is relocking in the process. I've only heard OTA Rootkeeper being used to maintain root, however that's different from maintaining an unlocked bootloader. We have a secured bootloader so my thinking is that this clearly is relocked in the JB OTA, which is expected.
Ywalker, the unauthorized warning was your phone telling you that your bootloader was locked. You only get that warning when you try flashing roms/kernels prior to unlocking your bootloader.

I have been looking for my post and could not find it. I see it was moved. I apologize for not following the rules. I will try to keep that to a minimum. I realized the bootloader was locked. I am going to try updating again to JB today.

I had my S3 replaced today becuase the power/lock button broke. When the vzw rep. brought out my replacement device it had a sticker on the phone that said updated. After activating and checking the building number I can confirm that VZW is updating their stock to a newer version. My current build number is I535VRALG1 and baseband is I535VRLG1. Does any one know if I can flash the previous version in Odin. I am afraid that they might have done this to block our current root method. This is the first I have heard about this current build.
Wanna help us out on IRC?
We need to see if you can root and what your system dump looks like.
any idea on what the update is?
I am heading to school right now and I do not get out until 11 o'clock eastern time. When I get home tonight I'll join the irc if somebody can be kind enough to let me know what channel it is.
Edit:
I see the channels in LLstarks sig I will join in tonight when I get back from school

Anymore info on this? I just had a phone shipped out on Monday, received today. Same little UPDATED sticker on the phone and box.
It would be nice to get some new radios. Would they be flashable with a locked bootlader?

Nope. Having a locked bootloader means we can't flash radios, kernels, or change boot animations ONLY roms.

How would we update this then? Stock recovery? Shouldn't make a difference if we've overwritten the recovery.img, since the only thing that seems checked is that the boot.img is signed.

Radios are unknown at the moment (most likely can flash update no problem, not sure about flashing downgrade). However boot animations ARE part of the rom, just FYI. Also kernels are flashable as well, just has to be done through a workaround method.
It probably takes away the search the whole phone function of S-Voice and some other small updates.

Ahh, touche. I was under the impression that flashing kernels was a proof of concept still not a done deal. Also, I wrote boot animation but was thinking splash screen regardless you are right.
Was just about to post the same thing actually. I just had my phone exchanged today and got the UPDATED sticker on it. Haven't tried to root it yet, though. Was going to wait a while to see if this topic came up/new update gets rooted. I really don't want to mess with it either. Just popped in to say that I got the same updated phone.
My co-worker received his phone yesterday and wanted me to root it for him, but it showed "updated" as well - new build/baseband number. To be safe I decided to hold off on rooting till we get some sort of confirmation.

Well I was going to flash the rooted image last night but fell asleep while waiting for my phone to charge. I get home a little earlier tonight so I will try flashing and see what happens. According to invisiblek I should be able to just factory reset if flashing in Odin fails. I just don't wanna Bork my phone. I also want root though....lol

I have rooted my s3 with
GS3DebugFSRoot: Root the Verizon GSIII without flashing which says that it will not work with JB.
Until I find a solution to just root my s3 with JB can I stop the constant attempts to update my s3 ? Besides delaying it cause if I forget then I'm sort of screwed.

I have a theory based on this, doesn't that app just keep root? We have a secured bootloader and that's been relocked by Verizon in each OTA. Accepting this OTA via custom recoveries, someone will inevitably try this on TWRP, shouldn't prevent the OTA from relocking the bootloader.
Is my line of thinking incorrect?

PolarBearMI,
1) There's already a root method for JB OTA in the dev section by open1your1eyes0
2) to prevent OTA's or their nagging notification, freeze "sdm1.0" using an app like Titanium Backup.

Yes that app just keeps root. People have been saying if they take it with a custom recovery it keeps root and unlocked, and recovery. However, this morning I'm seeing people say they got the unauthorized software screen street doing that so it must still relock the boot loader ( as it should).
My theory is this if you want to keep root, etc. Simply flash one if the pre rooted stock ROMs and the matching radios and rpm in your recovery of choice. If you want the official ota Odin to stock and take it, then re root. This way you are starting completely fresh.

boy all that sounds so much more complicated than the way I had initially rooted.
BTW I am ONLY interested in root, nothing else.
When I looked at open1your1eyes0 post entitled "[GUIDE] Jelly Bean Factory Image (Root/Recovery/Unlocked Bootloader)" it stated "official Jelly Bean leaks for Verizon Galaxy S III".
I was hoping to find a solution as very simple and specific to just rooting as I had in my original post.

Just looked and found this version has "ota survival", along with "temp unroot"
I was attempting to root my S3. Wasn't paying attention and I flashed the wrong com port in ODIN. After it failed I looked at ODIN and it had flashed on the second slot from the right, as you look at ODIN when working with it. I did not even know you could do that. Anyway this is the error I get anytime I attempt to flash back to stock "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn of your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help" I know this cannot be good at all!
1. post in the correct section for best results. if you cant find your thread itll probably be moved tit he QandA section.
2. i believe that message means your bootloader is locked. Ive never odined and dont know if it matters. but i believe thats what the error means.

So what is the purpose of ez bootloader now? I remember that was part of the original instructions for rooting the galaxy s3 when I first got it, but then the instructions changed for Jelly Bean and didn't reference that app any longer . . . I thought that app wasn't needed any longer . . . Am I mistaken on that?
It was a while back that this happened. So you are most likely correct. All I know is that at that time I had the same message. Once I re-flashed the phone, the ROM that I was trying to flash that I originally could not, I was then able to flash after running the ez bootloader. Just thought I would share.

Well how about I make it somewhat clearer? The VRALE6 bootloader is not a JB bootloader, it's the prerelease, pre-finalized software unlocked bootloader. Each of the JB bootloaders are locked, same as all the ICS ones. EZ Unlock flashes the VRALE6 bootloader onto your phone soooooo you're using it either way. It's inescapable!

Just root. The newest update had signal and battery issues, along with many other issues. Verizon even pulled the OTA. Flashing a newer ROM will give you the newer features anyways, and it will be better.

It was incredibly easy. Only thing that tripped me up at first was that I didn't have the Samsung drivers installed on my PC. Since the thread didn't mention installing them I was assuming they weren't needed. You can get them here. Once I installed them and went through the steps in the thread, I was rooted and unlocked in a few seconds.

If you're rooted now, I'm sure there is the new OTA out there that can be flashed. That's all you gotta do if you wanna run the stock OTA. But you won't gain anything by unrooting, taking the OTA and then rerooting... just a waste of time.

I would've flashed Scotts stock root deodexed vrbmf1 he posted. If you haven't tried taking the ota, flashing the stock root deodexed ROM is a much faster and more beneficial way to go and gives you init.d, theme support etc.
