What is keis?? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for a dumb question, but I am new to Samsung and I keep seeing people mention it, but what is on my tablet only lets me sync to my phone and people are talking about updating from it and such. I am so lost lol
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

KIES is an update utility (also let's you backup I think, not sure about that, never used it lol) for Samsung devices. It's used to manually install updates as opposed to OTA updates that happen on your device
Broken beyond repair

Kies is essentially Samsungs version of Itunes... It sync's music, videos and pictures, backs up your info to the PC (restores also) and updates, if available, your Samsung device to the latest firmware...
Unlike Itunes, you don't need to transfer files through Kies or update either. It isn't needed except to install the usb drivers, though these can be found here on XDA....

Thanks smart a** i was looking for more info though. Its like itunes, i get that, but why would we use that when all android devices backup data already? Whats the point? What makes this better than backing up any differently than before??

Well, maybe someone can go to google, type what is kies, and see that its only a bunch of junk that they talk about. Maybe someone could just try to help someone out without trying to be funny. Thats what this forum is supposed to be about.

Someone did help you out. Kies is samsungs PC suite for android phones. You can use it to update software, sync music and videos and back up the device. It's twice you've been told now. What more do you want?

And FYI. That is totally the opposite of "what this forum is about". It wasnt created so lazy people can be spoon fed information. It was created for developers to share there hard work and ideas with each other. We are lucky they let normal users like you and me hang around and share all there hard work for free.

You could try something like "Bump" to exchange info with other phones using the app...as far as something like Google Wallet, no NFC means no soda without spare change.

Anyone can have Bump, even iDudes. Only a few Samsung fanboys have NFC and most don't even know it.
Here is the thing.. s beam and android beam sound great in theory... just like google wallet, but i have had NFC for about a year and really havent used them once! but it does have that cool factor to it.

muhhaaaahaaaaa, awesome, but odin is officiel from samsung and not for flashing new beta or so.normaly its for the phoneshops/repairshops.so can a phone with software fail, thats saves money because it can direct on repairshop/market...with a new flash go back to life.and the owner is happy.so its not necessary to sending its to samsung, than you have to wait 2-4 weeks then send back to Repairshop, many millions of peoples using samsung, thats a lot of shipping costs and for the repairman by samsung too for his hard work and this for 3minutes flash.believe i have ask in chat with german servicecenter.greeeeeetz
I figured that it had to been an official Samsung software. It minds me of the Motorola software that got leaked years back. I can't remember the name of it. I used to flip with nextel i930 (classic my 1st smart phone ever. I wish that made smart phone clam style again) with it.

There is a connection to the mythology of Odin and the name. Not sure how it all breaks down, but Heimdal is the Mac version of Odin. Heimdal is the gate keeper of Asgard.

To me, it makes sense that Samsung made this but I dont think it's for Samsung. I think Samsung developed it for repair shops and such as someone else suggested. I agree Samsung devs shouldn't need a straight forward gui. Butttt then again, this is why I asked and it seems that odin magically showed up and we have just been getting updates ever since. If we dont know where the origin, maybe the source of updates might get us somewhere.

If I was this dev, I'd have already pulled my link and told y'all to shove it. He (and every other dev) does this for you.
Be grateful someone is dropping another option. I can't count the threads I've seen lately about "development drying up" "when's the next ROM dropping?" -- silly ish like that. Well, here you go...

base is one thing...functionality and differences built in is something else. hence why i asked what was "different"
i dont see anyone being rude or anything of the sort..if anything someone made a great suggestion by asking the op to link up with the devs of what we already have to incorp the toolbox or possibly build something greater.

To get the Gmail app working, simply uninstall the original Gmail from Google store. Then install the new Gmail app. It will then say sinking email. What you will notice on your status bar is a little icon with an! In it. You have to give the app permissions to sync your email. After you accept reboot your phone and tada!

[Q] Official Jelly Bean Issues

So this new Jelly Bean update is awesome, but I am having a rather annoying issue. I CONSTANTLY get a pop up error message "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped." Has anyone else run into this issue or have an idea how to fix it? It's pretty frustrating when an official update acts this way literally as soon as the update finished.
Stop the Media storage application, Clear the Media storage data, and reboot.
Won't boot after update
Yes, as you expected, the noobs like me will have issues with the jellybean update.
I installed the latest jellybean update via Keis. All went well, phone starts OK. Then I access my memos and the system migrates my memos. I come back to my phone and it's frozen. I reboot it and it gets stuck on the AT&T logo.
I do not have a backup. (Yes, I am shooting myself now - "what could go wrong??".)
What are my options?

Thank you. I read some comments on a YouTube video of people complaining they lost all their stuff. To some of the ruder members: You see I'm new to the website and I ask questions that I don't know the answer to. That's what smart people do.
We aren't rude, I don't know if you've looked around but there's a lot of freaking stupid questions being asked that shouldn't be. It's annoying as hell for us who have been around here for a while and we're all sick of telling people to freaking search. It doesn't matter how new you are, do some research before you ask on here.
