Hi,
Firstly, I have read many of the threads on here, so I've done my searching but want a bit of advice:
Can anybody give any real reasons why I'd want to go custom? From what I can see there is no advantage at the moment (Considering that all new features, eg, Cupcake) will be released officially at some point. Also worth considering is that if something good on the custom scene arrives in the future by then I'm sure many devs/hackers will know how to root the phone again.
For the moment, is there any advantage for a casual user to make the switch to custom?
My new G1 arrives soon, and after taking part in the PSP custom scene I'm keen to see any reasons why I should go custom on the G1... I don't want to do it for the sake of it (If it offers little to no advantage, but risk) but likewise I want to make sure I'm not misunderstood and perhaps there really is some reason?
Thanks.
Big reason I went with a custom image was to allow tethering on my phone using iptables.
That and the fact I get a little glow deep down knowing my phone is free!
Thanks for the reply.
With those in mind, any other reasons I should grab custom rather than the OTA update?
Cheers.
freedom, plain and simple. There is a lot of stuff that cannot be done without a modded system. For example, the themes. If you are happy with what you have, there is no problem in keeping it.
I wouldn't customize my new phone right away. It's always a good idea to wait it out and get familiar with the phone and all it's capable of doing first. Perhaps later you can get into customizing it and all the other mods.

I would - who knows when T-Mobile will issue an OTA update to block downgrading?
didnt think about that...
thats true, I'll bet dimes to dollars the next update stops downgrading
if history is a predictor of the future, the Tmob will not allow the this fun to continue unchecked.
I say do it while you can, it wont last forever.
They said an update would come out "after the american holidays" and I say the downgrading will stop then, look how fast the lockdown came, the first update(RC28) was slow to come out, but once the exploit was in the wild, RC30 was out in a few days...
look on the brightside it may just get us an update sooner
bhang
...and since both tmo and google know the keys that the "rooters" around here are using, what's to stop them from sending out separate, test-key-signed OTAs to stop what's already been going on?
I wouldn't expect it from Google (if they did, I'd call Android "tango uniform") but from tmo, I'd expect anything.
Ok rooting gives you freedom. To do what you want with your property??

the lack of otacerts.zip prevents it. no otacerts.zip -> no ota will pass sig check.
note: the ADP1 version still has otacerts.zip. it contains the test-key. I didn't delete it from ADP1 because it might still be useful to receive OTAs from google for the ADP1.

Hence once android source is completely public you wont need you could in theory have JFoid but that would be a lot of work. I could sit on rc30 with overlay mods until someone beside google by tmobiles hand forces what we want on our Devices. Contract or not they are ours to do with what we want. especially if you paid full price for your device...
Thanks for so many replies.
I'm sorry if I'm being stupid here, but alot of people say to go custom just because I should be able to have full access to my own device. Sounds great and I can understand that viewpoint... I'm just curious though - Say I "have" full access... At this time what exactly does that let me do? This is the thing, I'm surely not understanding everything correctly for all that I can see (Mainly) that it allows you to do is put your own firmware on, add a new boot image and tether. I can see people are fond of doing this "because they can do" but to the average user is there anything that I cannot do with the original that custom can do?
Cheers!
Installing themes for one thing. That seems to be quite popular with average users
You can also use droidsans to get the autorotate feature. And soon, who knows what will happen in a mo or 2.
802.1X support via wpa_supplicant is one reason to get root. Some of us are on university campuses where the only wifi is WPA Enterprise. Though G1 hardware supports this, there is no UI for it and root is needed.
My favorites so far (and I've only had root for a day)...
1. Tethering.
2. Installing the new autorotate browser, if you don't feel like waiting for an update.
3. Busybox (thanks to Jesus Freke.)
4. You might want to theme it, I like it the way it is though with the Ibex background to match my computer.
I'm currently looking for a new Android phone, bouncing between Samsung SGS2 and the Atrix2.
Having a few questions about the A2.
1. After searching/reading, it looks like the A2 can be rooted for full access. So what is the advantage of unlock the bootloader? What is it good for?
2. Can we install a custom ROM on the A2, for example, a CM7 ROM (I don't even know that CM7 team actually has the ROM for this device or not, but they seem to have one for SGS2)?
Thanks all
Answers to your questions:
1. The advantage of unlocking the bootloader is that you gain the ability to flash ROM images and update.zip's (which can include many different mods). It does this by giving you the ability to load a custom recovery which is used to flash ROM's and updates, backup and restore your entire file system, clear the file system, and tons of other functionality depending on the custom recovery available for the phone.
2. Right now the A2 does not have an unlocked bootloader and there have been no ROM's made for it yet. If flashing is priority one, you might want to go with an SGSII since it has everything you need NOW. If you are patient, you can go with the A2 and wait for the blessings to come.
Clear!
Big thank for your quick reply lilhaiti.
So, up to now, after rooting, can we install different launcher (if not wanting the default GUI by Motorola, is it called Blur or something?)

you can install different launchers without rooting.....go to the market and install one....

Good to know, thanks ghost.
Just need a clarification, I am a B&N NC owner, by default B&N stock ROM has limited the apps and that's the reason why we root it to gain full access on the Android Market. Is the same theory applied for the A2?
Other meaning, what will I miss if I don't root the A2?

The NC isn't even in the same class of devices. You have access to most of the market on a phone. If you have to ask what the benefit is of rooting, then you don't need it. Most all the bloatware is user uninstallable out of the box.

Oh, so why do need to root? What's the benefit of it if we can fully access to Android Market for apps and bloatwares can be uninstalled right out the box?
Thanks again.
Did they change something with the bootloader? On the backflip, noone ever touched the bootloader. it's always been locked/fastboot disabled. Yet it has several roms and recoveries?

root gives us access to the /system and to functions and features that are previously hidden from stock usage.
like i said, if you have to ask, WHY we would want/need root, then you dont need it. nothing mean, just that so many people go off thinking they have to root like its going to open up a magical door and make the phone self-aware. its just giving you access to stuff you normally dont have access to. this is good for people that know what they are doing, and bad for people that have no clue what root means.

while this may be true, we dont have any recoveries available yet. there are ways around a bootloader, but we have not gotten to that point yet. the phone is too new, and not enough dev support yet. i am working on a rom, and can make it a pseudo-rom like we had on the OG Atrix, but we need a way to get back to stock in case of a mishap first....
Thanks again, ghost.
I've been ripping my NC apart but I tend not to mess around with the phone.
Actually PG, not everyone is aware of the pennies and apps that open up with a root. I am sure almost everyone can benefit from more apps

Unfortunatly Go Launcher has a problem with notifications of Gmail (which I knew when I loaded it). That's not an issue I don't use Gmail
However I do use my alarms and it appears it stops almost all, if not all, notifications. I love the menus and how it works but I'm doing a factory reset. If we had not used a second alarm this morning my wife might have beat me to death with the Atrix 2 this morning.
I still have not rooted the phone so no titanium backup, it's downloading time
I have never seen go launcher remove notifications. Sounds like you got something else going on.

I reset the phone, loaded all the apps I wanted to keep and then put Go Launcher EX back on. Problem solved
I'm thinking that during my slew of loading and trying out apps, like a kid in a candy store, I loaded a data manager that allowed me to set kills on apps. I believe in my zeal I set the alarm to be shut down 2 min after the phone gets sleepy.
Thanks again guys, I really like go launcher and now have go manager too
Hello. Since this is my 1st post as "M4TGS" few words about me: I'm new MT4GS owner and new Android user, coming from WinMo world (been using PocketPCs since WinMo 2003 SE) so if something sounds noobish please forgive me, I haven't had Android phone before (or linux on my PCs).
Please correct me if/where I'm wrong.
My phone is:
LOCKED
S-ON
HBOOT-1.45.0013
with T-Mobile's ROM full of useless junk (I knew that would be the case when I bought it, I had WinMo phones from T-Mo before and they always were loaded with garbage, which I always flashed with modded ROMs, I don't know why I just assumed all Android phones are easy to root and flash shouldve done some reading here first...)
So, after reading a lot of threads here today it seems that:
1 - I cannot change my ROM (due to S-ON and bootloader version that hasn't been cracked yet), is that correct?
2 - I cannot get rid of T-Mobile's junk from my stock rom either, because even if I use the "temp-perma-SuperUser" method, delete the "bloatware" apk, the bootloader will do crc check on next boot and restore them all again, is that correct?
3 - Assuming I understood 1 and 2 correctly, is there a way to stop the "bloatware" from starting at boot? For WinMo 6.x we had few different utilities that basically work on the phone similar to batch scripts on Windows, and a lot of automation could be achieved with those; if there is something like this for Android could it be automated to stop some of the bloatware and remove their shortcuts from menu at every boot?
(i.e. T-Mobile's-specific apps such as "My Account" or "Visual Voicemail", specially the latter bugs me the most because my canadian provider Wind doesn't have Visual voicemail and I can't just tap on "voicemail" without being nagged to enable visual voicemail every time I tap on voicemail in notifications, its so annoying)
4 - How on earth do I make videocalls with this phone and ROM? (yes I searched forum for that and found "Qik" which is not what I'm asking about - I can install i.e. Skype and it'll serve me better than this Qik)
On my last WinMo phone I just tapped the "camera" icon in the phone app and it did videocall using data connection. I can't find anything like it (nor anything pointing to videocall or datacall) on this phone, what am I missing?
Any answers appreciated, TIA!
Well ill just start by saying 1 is wrong so you might want to do some more reading chief, i didnt get through the rest of your post yet just wanted to say your first thought is wrong

Yeah hmm maybe find a friend that has a phone with a ffc and video call and see if once you add all the info to the address book it gives you the option to video call. I would say google talk has video call but its trash. Then again you might have to use a 3rd party app like qik, thats what comes stock right

I know exactly what you mean. I came over to this phone about 2 months ago from a Touch Pro 2. Boy the difference is figuring out how to get around the security on it.
Anyway, just use HTC's unlock tool assuming you are on the newest software version. If you're not, then update to the newest. This will allow you to flash custom ROMs. Flash Clockworkmod recovery. Then just flash superuser through it. This will give you root and the ability to delete the bloatware.
You'll still be S-on, but will be able to flash any custom ROM you want, you just have to push the kernel separately through ADB instead of in a nice neat package.
Yes HappyKhicken it seems much more work to customize it than it was with any Windows Mobile. Not that it would discourage me its just an observation.
I'm still reading around, I have just found out about the "wire trick" to make radio S-OFF, so I want to learn as much as possible before I do anything other than hard reset.
Since you also had TP2 can you explain to me how do you make a videocall here?
I can't figure out how to make videocall at all
If you remember in WinMo (well, depending on ROM and dialer canvas version you had of course) when you tap phone there was the icon that looked like one of those old Logitech round webcams, when you tap this icon it switched to "videocall" to the person you were dialing, and if this person didn't have video capability it switch back to "voice". Can't find anything like this here.
Also probably stupid question: is it possible to restore unlocked/s-off phone back to being locked with s-on and full of junk stock rom? (in case I would need to send it back to htc for warranty repair or replacement, I don't have T-Mobile's option with Asurion insurance since I'm not their customer and I'm in Canada)
thx

OK. I bit the bullet, went to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1532809
run the HTC unlock, and now my bootloader says ***UNLOCKED***
(this was easy-peasy, just somehow no one mentioned in htc unlock tool thread - or I didn't notice it - that an account on htcdev is needed, but I made some quick fake email acct and registered there with it, hopefully I won't need it again? I just realized I didn't save any info for these accts lol)
So, next step would be to flash recovery - either CWM or "Stock 1.55" as there are these 2 to choose from at fifth step on HTC Unlock Tool.
What are the difference between these two?
If I flash one of them now, can I flash the other one later?
I'm not going to flash any new ROM yet, I need to get accustomed to Android first, but I would want to get rid of some bloatware and T-Mobile-specific apps that came with stock ROM since I'm not on T-Mobile. I know I need to flash CWM or Stock Recovery to gain root access, but I don't know which one should I choose / what are the major difference / advantages / disadvantages ?

Skype works very well on this phone. I've done videochat with a few friends, one of them using another Android, the other friend on an iPhone 4S. We were using Skype since that is a common software for us. Oh, I forgot, I also did Skype video chat using my MT4GS to another friend in Turkey, he was using his laptop. Great thing about Skype is it works on 4G or Wi-Fi (I have unlimited 4G data so I don't worry about it).

Thanks. Yeah, I installed Skype from Google Play (I think Android Market was better name) and indeed it works great. I think sound quality is way better than Skype for Window Mobile, maybe it is better than 'regular voicecall' too, or so it seems.
But it came to me clear now, and I can't believe it, but despite most of Android 'smartphones' having front cameras, the OS itself doesn't have videocall capability built-in, am I correct?
It's kinda let down if true? because AFAIR even my old TyTN II (thats ancient 2007 model) and every other WinMo smartphone with front camera I had after that also had videocall built-in right there in the dialer

I'm sure I'm not the only noob to this phone and Android OS in general, so:
Why does the usb port need to be in debug mode and how do I start it if it is necessary?

To do many adb functions the device must be in debug mode.
The usb port itself isn't in debug mode, rather the whole device is.
In a very technical sense, a ROM is not 'polished' or 'finished' if it releases with usb debugging enabled - but I released mine that way because I use it so very often.
The setting is in:
Settings - Applications - Development

Now to root my unlocked phone:
volume down + power, to go into hboot, plug in usb, fire up HTC Unlocker Tool and install CWM or Stock recovery, but do I need to change on my phone's hboot menu screen down to Recovery first or do I keep it at default Fastboot to install one of the Recoveries?
Another question is which recovery to install? It seems CWM is the one to go with but what are the advantages/disadvantages of CWM vs Stock 1.55 recovery? TIA

What I find the easiest to do is just use something like My Backup Pro or Titanium Backup to "freeze" the things I don't want, usually those things from T-Mobile or HTC that startup in the background but I never use. Like the Group Messaging stuff (there are 3 processes associated with that, I freeze all 3), the SWM-C process, T-Mobile ID (a caller-ID type thing you have to pay for). Yes, they still take up storage space but that is negligible, by freezing them they no longer are taking up processing/battery time.

Why would they ban the use of a rooted phone???
are you allowed to get a nexus?
do those come 100% open to ROMS or do you still need to root them? im not too familiar

Get a personal phone to play with? But yeah I understand them not allowing modification of a work phone. If an employee where I work soft bricked a work phone on it would be a big problem (considering the need for mobile communication).
Tell them that if you're IT then you need to be admin privilege on the phone as same as on the PC? right?
How would they even know? Do they go around checking phones?

I think a big reason is that work/company phones can hold sensitive data and one doesn't know what mind of modifications rooted phones have. What if the rooted ROM somehow send all sensitive work data to a external server? With stock you don't have to worry about that since everything is in a controlled environment.
Sucks, but makes sense.

It's true. I mean I was in the synergy thread and they had to swap out some coding in one of their notification toggle mod because it was sending phone info (I think it was imei or something) to some server in China. You never know and companies don't want to take that risk.
Edit:I went back and it was actually the included advanceS app (which lets you modify the lidroid toggles and their order) that had the questionable coding.
I can understand why your company would do it, but that still sucks

He doesn't know the pattern or the google account password associated with the account on the device. (When he upgraded and moved out of the device he had to create a new google account.)
He wants to look into the device one more before he turns it over to me. (I will wipe it and root it for my purposes.) Is there a way to get past the lock screen without the complete reset in recovery?

Just flash the current rom. Small details might be lost like the settings or maybe the contacts but all media and documents will still be there. Other than that you'll have to struggle. ALOT. Maybe someone has a simple method, if so I'd love to hear about it. GL

The device is not rooted and he does not have a custom recovery.
