[Q] Unrooted HTC pico: SIM contacts deleted while trying to delete phone contacts - HTC Pico (Explorer)

Hi to all, I have a strange problem with my htc pico.
As I'm running a non-root phone, obviously I was out of memory to install much apps after 1+months of using. At manage applications, I saw that contacts was eating 23MB space. I went to contacts and saw there was 1000+ contacts from my Facebook and Google account and I had around 200 (real) contacts in my SIM. It was clear to me that the email, pictures, facebook status etc of those online contacts eating up that much space and I needed to clear those. Those online linked contacts are of no use to me in my phone.
I force stopped contacts and deleted the data from manage applications and gained the free space it was blocking. I was happy to gain space.
Now when I came back to contacts, I see all those Facebook and Google contacts are there, just they lost their associated avatar, facebook status, etc.
Surprised and shocked to see that all the sim contacts are deleted.
WT* how SIM contacts be deleted if I'm clearing phone memory??
Is there any app(free) that can undelete SIM contacts.
I have contacts backup in the microSD which I backed up using my last samsung phone. I opened the backup folder and there is 230 <contact_name>.vcf files. Can I somehow select all and import back to the SIMcard by any app(free).
In the worst case it can't be solved by android, I have to ask some friend for samsung phone and insert my SIM and microSD there and restore contacts and then shout out loud "Android Sucks" .
TIA.

U have backup in a sd-card so just restore
Remember the format of backup should be in vcf format....

I have format in vcf. But if I click it in file manager, the popup shows reading "reading vcard file...". But doesn't gives me option to save the contact to phone or sim. After reading, popup vanishes and in contacts I cannot see any new contact in phone or SIM.
Somehow I need to restore all those contacts to my SIM card and not in phone(who knows when phone deads).
Meantime I have manually saved few contacts to phone. Now where's the option like this "contacts settings"->"move contacts from phone to sim"-->"select all " as we see in Nokia/Samsung non-android phones.
It's great fun but also hard to be in android after years of using Nokia-1600 category phones.

Well in cm9 there's no option of importing contacts to sim u need to go back to sense based rom
And regarding vcf error use some contact application from playstore

Thanks for the tip. I should have searched for contacts app from playstore.
My software isn't cm9. It's software number 1.31.720.3 with htc sense version 3.5 and android 2.3.5 . By unrooted phone I meant I didn't root it and I've planned to root and install roms after warranty expires.
I found a move option in contacts, but that's for moving phone contacts to google account.
Fortunately my problem resolved after I restarted the phone. Now contacts got 229 from SIM and 0 from phone, facebook, google. I think some cache problem was causing me all these trouble which got washed off on reboot. The call history is also empty now, I guess I've deleted that too.
I've stopped sync contacts in sync settings for facebook and gogole.

This happens to me sometimes. I usually just backout of messages, and go back in and it works fine. Hasn't hapened for a few days though.
Happens to me ALL the time...
Yeah from my searching it's been happening to all of us at one point or another. I usually delete my facebook account from the phone and re-add them. Pics come back.
Here is the fix - you probably ran permission fix in CWM. This is one of the results...
Go into Applications - Manage applications
Go to ALL applications tab
Scroll down to Contacts Storage and click it.
Clear its data
Scroll down to Market
Clear data
Open market - accept agreement
Resync your contacts. This only erases the picture cache not your numbers. It gets corrupted when you run permission checks in CWM.
I had this same problem, it wasn't storing the picture right in the SMS app, and other apps like LauncherPro weren't able to pull any of the contact pictures. I also had it not syncing my Facebook picture with my local contact (which I find annoying).
What I did is added the Facebook for HTC Sense account, and let this sync. When I installed the FB app I told it to not sync anything.
Now everything is working great.
Well my problem was due to the cwr and cuz I was saving contact to the phone and not to Google ! How can I have saving to Google default

Second of all, don't ever save your contacts on your phone, that's what google sync is for. When you start restoring saved contacts and letting google sync run, you're creating a huge mess.
In your case I would clean up the contacts on google, then wipe your phone (not restoring any contacts saved on the phone) so that everything you have on google is what you have on the phone.
I did this a while back, and have been happy ever since.

Absolutely agree with you. After I rooted, i dont know what I did, but after i rooted, all my facebook contacts ended up on my phone. )And no, I didnt tell the facebook app to sync all) I think i added the google account and facebook accounts too fast and then hosed it up when it brought up suggested linked contacts. I just went to Google contacts, cleaned what i didnt want, made some changes to other contacts, cleared contact storage data, and had them all back how i like less than 2 minutes later. and i still had facebook for htc sense setup and it had everybody synced in about 5 minutes. been perfect ever since.

[Q] importing contacts after rom flash crashes

ok since owning the Mez i have noticed one thing/problem that has plagued me that never goes away.
after flashing a new rom, or flashing any ROM, when i go to import my contacts from my sd card that i exported to the sd card (prior to flashing) causes the contacts app to crash.
it does import a few contacts but only a few.
so out of the 127 i have backed up it may only import 20 but the progress bar says it crashes on like the 3rd contact.
it never gives me a force close error, it just flat out crashes.
i have cleared all that can be cleared and tried again and again but it wont work.
any thoughts, suggestions?
is there a place on my phone where i can just paste the .vcf file and the phone will read it and use it and everything just shows up in my contacts list?
p.s.
even deleting contacts, just 1 of them, causes the contacts app to crash

I've not had a problem importing contacts from sd but awhile back I imported them to my google account so once I sign in - I've got them, no need to bother with an import.

Try seeing if you can import the vcf into your Google account online (like from a computer).
Ok i just got an FC on android.process.acore when trying to enable sync google conacts.
So now google, phone and now facebook contact sync is totally broken.
I am using the stock ec10 combo rom.

Did you restore apps using TB from another build? You shouldn't have any FC's on any ROM's in here - they've all been tested - especially the stock builds. FC issues come from permission problems and restoring data from another build, typically.
Although this might not help you now here's the best way I found after reading many posts to keep a good list of your contacts. You'll want them in your google account *not* your phone contacts. The problem when people switch from whatever non-google phone to an Android is the carrier will import the contacts into your phone contacts. So here's the best way to get them into your google contacts.
1. Export your phone contacts to your SD card
2. Move the file to a computer with internet access to http://contacts.google.com
3. Wipe the contacts on your phone (apps in market to do this, don't recall names atm)
4. Import the csv file into your contacts account on google
5. Merge duplicates and sync them to your phone
6. Export your google contacts to your computer (or google docs) so you have a nice backup just in case!
Takes a little leg work but it'll always be worth it!
Like I said, you may know that already or have another reason for keeping them as phone contacts but you can always export your google contacts and import them into a new phone if you decide to move off Android at some point!
Another tip for your google contacts. Every email you get in gmail automatically adds the sender to your contacts. If you search in contacts.google.com for just a single space it will list all your contacts and at the bottom it will have "other contacts" which are all the ones they've automatically added. Occasionally you may want to merge these or delete them to keep your contacts from getting cluttered.
That's exactly what I said. <.<

backing up

when i'm signed into HTC Sense, are my contacts automatically synced to HTC sense? If not, how can I back them up using my gmail or google?

You should have a google account to use the phone....so...turn on sync and go into settings>accounts and sync and make sure its syncing your contacts....log in on a PC to gmail and check there to double check.....
It's a tablet dammit! Not a BIG phone....
you can just export your contacts to your sd. its better that way, its crazy syncd with gmail and now, in my gmail account, there are 4x the contacts I have. contacts multiplied. i don't know why. @[email protected] and its gonna be sad to have 2k of contacts jump in to your phone
I've always sync'd to gmail/google since my my first android phone in '09 (G1), never had duplicate contacts and never had to do a backup/restore.

I have used sync with MS exchange- works good, but yet have troubles add Skype contacts into exchange.
There is no problem with syncing to Google. Only you must never, really never, restore contacts from a backup. You should only use Google Contacts or a backup, never both. When you restore a backup, you will get duplicates. Been there, with only a small number of contacts luckily, and besides this, never had a problem.

Agreed! I have T-Mobile, and the first thing I do when I get a new phone, after signing into my Google account, is uncheck the damn T-Mobile backup in Accounts & Sync. Of course, once you root, you can say goodbye to that, but in the meantime...

So thats why. lol. before I was using the contacts in my google account as I was using a different phone. now as i am just exporting/importing my contacts from sd card.
So to export your contacts to your sd card, just go to "contacts" and go to options, you should see a "import/export" contacts. just select the export to SD card. then, give it a name and save. to import your contacts, just go to contacts and select "import from sd(or external - forgot the name)"

Wait. Are *all* of your contacts already in Google contacts (on the web in Gmail, not on your phone)? If they are, there is no need to backup your contacts prior to flashing a new ROM, doing a full wipe, etc. In fact, I don't recommend that. So...if all of your contacts (or other Google data like calendar and gmail) are in google/gmail contacts on the web, skip their backup. Then, after you wipe your phone and flash whatever you're flashing, just sign into your Google account, and your contacts and any other data on Google severs will automatically be downloaded (and then set up for 2-way sync) without your needing to do any thing further.
Does that make sense?

Nope. Not unless you intentionally format sdcard from the settings or in recovery
Here's the thing I saved my friends contacts on the memory card and I can't rstore it ..idk why its saved as 0000.vcf but I can't restore it

When you restore it I assume you're doing it from the More>Import/Export>Import from SD card>Phone then it'll start scanning for v card data....right?
Yes that's how I'm doing it ...is it wrong way?
Nope. That's the right way. But another thing is if you're not seeing the contacts show up they might not be set to show up..... just to double check.... Contacts>Menu>View>make sure checkbox next to SIM is marked.... That's the only thing I can think of aside from a buggered up export.
try copying your vcf file to your computer and importing it to outlook. then, sync your phone with outlook contacts and lemme know what you find out.
even easier... go to the market and check out something like vCardIO
because... guess what... yeah, we've got an app for that too, but ours is free.
Just wanted to add gmail backs up contacts as well. I've flashed multiple times not saving and gmail restores all of them everytime. It won't save texts though gotta use a sms backup, nandroid, tb or backup them yourself.
And reflashing won't touch the sd card unless you hit format by mistake which would stink if you were installing a custom rom lol.

Gmail only backs up contacts if you have it set to backup contacts AND save them to your gmail account when you add a new contact to your phone. I have come across more people that don't than do. Mostly the uninformed/first time android users that still think you're supposed to save them to your sim card like back in the old days.
OP: MyBackup Pro is probably the easiest solution to backing up contacts, call logs, bookmarks, dictionary, sms, mms, settings, android home, etc. I use MyBackup Pro for all the mentioned and have it on a schedule to backup each night in case I decide to flash a rom on a whim and TiBackup for my apps/game data even though MyBackup Pro does it too but I just don't like the way it restores them.

[Q] backing up phone info

ok this is going to be stupid, but i havent been able to back up my phone contacts and such to gmail or my computer. ive searched everywhere and everything points to backing it up to gmail. it seems like i have everything correct for it to sync, however when i open my contacts section in gmail there is nothing there. and just asks if i want to manually enter the information. i am on a mac so if there is any other way i am open to that as well. wanting to root the phone and want a backup of my contacts before i continue. any help appreciated.
Export to sd card. Mount phone as disk drive on computer. Copy contact file over
People app -> settings -> manage contacts

Also if you sync contacts in phone settings for Google. Then log into your gmail acct on pc. The top left tab says gmail. Click on that go to contacts. You can make sure your contacts are sync with you Google acct. So when you set up your new ROM and log into gmail and sync. Hwalla contacts on your phone.
