It's here! Check it out here: http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/app/5a4e4cdf-4d60-4084-8d9f-61d2e8f4830b
No more hacking (for that, anyway)

Yeah but the program sucks. I couldn't get it to recognize my keyboard was attached, and I am not the only one with this complaint from what I have read on forums.
i uninstalled it until MS can get it fixed.

If you read the app details, they claim that the solution to the problem is to go into the Devices and refresh the list three times. Not even joking.
Whatever. An app would be nice, but I'm perfectly happy to modify the registry, and created .REG files (they're available for download on this forum somewhere) to apply or revert the most interesting changes.

Alternate method to installing Market content

In case there's somebody around here wondering, I'm starting a thread to show you how to download FREE apps if you don't have market access. Any FREE app you can find online in .apk form is yours. Please note you DO NOT need ROOT ACCESS to follow these steps, but I recommend it anyways, so use that nifty search bar and try it out.
Note: This is a method only for installing FREE APPS that are already free. Some people complain of not having the market app, others have market crash issues. This method is only to be used as an alternate to the Market if you do not have market access.
What you'll need:
Method of data transfer between phone and computer (USB Cord, MicroSD adapter, etc)
ASTRO File Manager- Found in the Android Market for free.
Level of Difficulty: 2/10
Procedure:
Step 1: Download ASTRO File Manager
This is self-explanatory. Go into your market and search for: ASTRO
Look for the result that reads: ASTRO File Manager
Download the app, it's free.
Step 2: Connect phone/SD to computer
Either plug in your phone and select mount, or plug your MicroSD into an adapter. Once your computer recognizes the SD card, move to step 3.
Step 3: Create free apps folder
Create a new file folder on your SD card in the top directory (meaning on the SD card and not in any other file folder). Name it Free Apps or similar.
Step 4: Download your .apk files
Search the internet for your desired applications. XDA forums and iPmart are great places to start. Once you find your application, download it and drag it to your Free Apps folder on your SD card.
Step 5: Unmount phone
This doesn't need explaining.
Step 6: Run ASTRO
Once your phone is unmounted and ready, run ASTRO File Manager. Once the application loads, it will list all the folders on your SD card. Navigate to your Free Apps folder, and select it. Once open, find your application you wish to install. It may list it twice, one with the logo and the other with a little settings logo, click the one that has the actual application logo.
Step 7: Installation
A menu will popup with two choices: Explore or App Manager. Select App Manager. It will come up with a new window, and beneath the application logo will be a button that says install. It will bring up the familiar installing are you sure screen, click yes and install it. Once it finishes, click done. Now you can install more or run your application.
That's it, enjoy your apps.
Hmm... I don't see any piracy. There are a lot of "Free" apps online. Android is Open Source. Now if he was talking about downloading paid apps for free... then we have a problem.
This is just a thread showing how to install free apps... which there are billion of online.

If you actually went to the website listed.. Its a website that offers FREE PAID android apps.. Is that not piracy?
EDIT : Besides... Why would you use this method of installing free apps? The market offers free apps..

Seriously dude you need to stop...one of the sites he mentioned has warez in it. For instance here are a few PAID apps...
Solo v1.21
Advanced Task Killer PRO v1.7.6
SetCPU for Root Users v1.5.3a
Should I go on or should I let you continue making yourself look foolish??

We dont support wares here kid. So please GTFO these forums with your ****ING ****! people work hard to make these apps so people like us can enjoy them. And they spent hours on making the apps and your here to rip them off really?
Now If you would kindly like to support the free apps for being free and the paid apps for being PAID!!!
Then you shall do this for the "goodies" aka Free apps.

As far as "piracy" is involved... I don't see any here. Just because the guy says there's a way for you to go throw yourself off a cliff, doesn't mean you're gonna go do it, right ?
He's offering a solution on how to install freely available .apk's. How you get them and If YOU choose to go download them, that's your problem.
Now let's play nice...
VinceOB, MyDroidHax, and Juggsy, you all really need to calm down. I may not have worded it correctly, but I fixed it. The reason I posted this was because a ROM I installed for whatever reason didn't have the market app, so I had no market access. There are a wide array of free apps on both sites, yes there are a few paid on iPmart, but iPmart is still one of the best overall sources for free apps as well. Seriously, i didn't plan on awaking to controversy.

I didn't see him drop the f bomb on u. He might have meant it that way but that would be putting words in his mouth.
Sometimes I wonder what the qualifications are to become a mod are. So far I believe the first three qualifications are ego, power hungry, and favoritizm.
Care to elaborate on the extensive and rigorous interviews and testing that took place to acquired ur higher status.
BTW win Mobil is only around cause its backed by Microsoft. Doesn't mean it's a great OS. Just that the backers have deep pockets and wont let it die.
ok, I don't like or condone the way this thread has gone. Instead of discussing the topic of free apps, its all about calling people names and slagging each other off.
@cbarlan - The f word was never mentioned by either MyDroidHax or
NRGZ28. One used "-Blam-" the other "***". It was actually you which first referred to the f-word.
But none of this matters. What matters is your respect for fellow xda users as per rule #2 below.....which by they way does mention no cursing which MyDroidHax blatantly flaunted.
2. Be polite and respect your fellow xda-dev user.
There is no need for cursing, flaming, racism or personal attacks. There are a lot of different nationalities on this forum all with different cultures, this means that no matter what you're like, you'll have to adjust to people that are most definitely not like you. For this reason we'd like to ask you to refrain from discussions about religion or politics, we do not wish to limit your right to free speech, but we have noticed these topics tend to get heated and might be best discussed in a different environment. Please remind nrgz28 who is a moderator of the rule u posted. I believe he was very rude in emplementing his harsh warnings instead of being polite and respectful. U can be stern and respectful at same time. And for future reference when someone uses stars inplace of a word it is usually vulgar. Also no need to threaten with this is ur first and last warning. Remember rule u referenced and be polite as well. I'd be willing to write up a wiki on how to use ur manners and be respectful as I've had to reach my six year old. Kinda the same thing
Thank you to the mods for the cleanup work. MyDroidHax initially used F***ING, and then edited it. I read the post almost immediately.
Anyways, I updated the post, and I wrote it at 1AM here today, so I was tired. Sorry for misconceptions guys. Like I said, I had market issues, so I found this way to help me and felt I'd share.
Yes you can get paid apps, but it doesn't mean you should or are going to. This is just a workaround to a normal situation, use it how you will.
Also, you guys really shouldn't rip on the mods. The rules clearly stated that you can't do what MyDroidHax did, and so he was told he can't. So? That's how it works, he won't do it again if he doesn't want to get banned.
On a related note, this can also be used to install apps that are not in the market but are available online, such as betas hosted online, custom apps, etc. If you're rooted, you should have "install non-market apps" checked, but if it's not it will take you to the screen where you check it during this process.
I am 98% sure this doesn't require root access. The file manager I know doesn't, and on the Hero (since we have not been neutered like ATT phones) we can install apps from outside sources. So that option is freely available.
What here requries root access?
Not giving you heck, just trying to make the post more informational.

I use Astro File Manager (free app). Dolphin browser (also free app) does great with downloads from the web. I then Open Astro, Use Astro's Search feature to search for "apk" or "netflix", then you can install the APK file from there.
Probably a very stupid question, but can't seem to access the thread for NetFlix App.

Okay, I'm quite sure this is an utterly stupid question, but I've dug around in the FAQ's and the general forums and can't see an answer so I'm going to risk being flamed as a noob to ask. When I try loading the link (above) for the Netflix app, I consistently get a message that I do not have permission to access the page, and that new users (with under 10 posts) aren't permitted to POST to the Devel forums.
I'm not trying to post - just to access the thread, and since it says "To encourage this new Users can read but not post in these forums." I assume that I should be able to view the thread. Am I missing something incredibly stupid and obvious, or doing something wrong, or is it just that you're unable to even view anything in the development-related forums until you have more than 10 posts?
Thanks to anyone who is kind enough to reply and open my eyes on this. If you really want to flame me for being a noob feel free, but it won't bother me any. I know my status, and my limits.
Adios!

[Q] Custom alert tones on Mango?

I know you can change ringtones in Mango, but I'm confused if there is a way to create custom alerts as well.
Is this a feature that just isn't implemented yet?
Thanks!

Wish people would give the links out and not say "search for it, its out there". I searched google and asked twice on the forum, nothing. If it can't be done fine, but if it can people need to show others.
Also still wondering if this is possible..
Use any music editing software(audacity etc) or Myxer.com and create an .mp3(I think .wav too, I'm not sure) file of the part of the song that u want as a ringtone. It has to be less than 39secs and less than 1MB. Then save the file anywhere on your computer(I save mine where I have my other music). Go to Zune software and locate the file that you made, right click it and change the genre to Ringtone(I had to type mine out) then then sync it to your device and you should be able to set it as a ringtone.

I can tell you what I did. I followed the instructions in the Mango Tips & Tricks thread. First you need to make sure your intended is less than 40 seconds long & less than 1 MB in size. Also, make sure it's a MP3 or WMA. To do this, used a audio editing software. I used AVS Audio Converter6 (Paid for app). Than load it into Zune by putting it in a folder being monitored by Zune for music. You can check in Zune settings which folders are watched & add or remove folders as needed. Now in the Zune software, find the file & right click on it. Click on Edit, than click the Genre field & type in Ringtone. Than just drag it to the WP7 icon at the buttom of Zune. On your WP7 device, go to the ringtones settings & it'll show up at the top of the list under "Custom". It'll be named by filename btw.

Custom Ringtones
1. Copy MP3 or WMA to Zune Collection. Choose Edit, and type in manually under Genre "Ringtone". The song must be less than 40 seconds and smaller than 1MB.
2. Go to Settings -> Ringtones + Sounds, tap Ringtone. Your custom ringtone will appear under a new tree called "Custom", above "Windows Phone"
Note that it is identified by the filename, rather than the track title.
Also, you can tap and HOLD a ringtone, and Delete will be offered (but only on the Custom ones; preloaded ones grey out delete).

I can see and empathise with TooSlo's frustration here - he's asking if its possible to create alert tones and folks are beating him up for it and sending him info on how to create ring tones. Unfortunately, you can't use ringtones for the various alert tones.
I suppose a hack is possible. It may be as easy as finding the appropriate category and editing the metadata (like you do with Ringtones).
same problem ive had searching for custom alerts.. nobody understands the question.
is there any way to make the question clearer for people to understand what were after? i say that in a non-sarcastic manner truly

I can't find any information that allows for custom alerts. I've been looking for this as well.
Not tried in latest Mango but I did in 7712
Sideload Touch Explorer and send yourself the tone you want but rename as ALERT 10 etc (we have to overwrite one of the built in ones)
Open the email and download the attachment then using Touch Ecplorer look in the volatile folders and you will see your file then copy and paste to the windows folder.
You may have to open the email and open attachment a few times before it shows in volatile but you will find it eventually
Hope this helps
That's more or less the same thing you have to do in Mango, but with provxmls. Follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238519
You can try this: Advanced Configuration Tool 1.3.0.0 beta available - for Mango only
That app have this option.
Just to let everyone know I have just reflashed my HD2 to Mango 7720, and used the email, copy and paste to windows folder and it still works
To be more precise email yourself a wma file and call it something like Alert-10.wma the open your email and download then play the attachment.
Then press home key and open touch explorer and navigate to APPLICATION DATA then VOLATILE and then EMAILATTACHMENTS and look in any folders you find here then using touch explorer copy and paste the file to the WINDOWS folder and overwrite.
Then set alert 10 as your chosen tone (or whatever number you used) and hey presto
looks like us without htc have to find an alternative to modify the filesystem? it seems touch explorer only works on htc devices for the time being. I did test out the advanced config tool, but it doesnt seem to have privs to modify much of anything yet
anyone else have luck on LG?

The problem here is that you and many others who have posted how to make ringtones haven't bothered to understand what the original post was asking. This is what is wrong with forums these days. You do a google search and you get a question asked in a forum and instead of any good info, you get a senior member "beating up" some guy for arriving at their site. If you do not want to answer questions then don't post. These types of forums are meant to be a help, so be HELPFUL. At least post a link that answers the question, not a google search that will bring them right back to their question.
The original post WAS NOT asking how to make ringtones; we all knew how to do that before Mango was released. The question was the ALERTS that WP7 uses for SMS, MMS, email and alarms. I too was doing my own footwork when I came upon this question. And of course like many other responses to my google search, they all talk about RINGTONES. I did however find on this forum a post that might answer this one's question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1368361
The answerer mentions using something called touchxperience/touchxplorer, but does not go into any detail as to how he was able to accomplish this.
I can imagine I'll go to that post and reply as to how he did it and some senior member will beat me up and say something about how I should do my own research.

i had used heathcliff's file deployer and deployed to /my documents/my ringtones (i think it was a .wma)
then changed the registry path for sms ringtones to point to the file. i think i used wp root tools to change the registry entry since it was easier than finding it in the registry.

I tried it last month and all of the filesystem tools I had attempted were unable to make modifications. I tried Advanced explorer, diagprovxml(I think this was for maybe getting the wifi tether working..), and another one that I cannot recall at the moment. None of these were able to successfully modify the files properly.
LG still no go for me, unless someone else has gotten it to work since I last tried?

I am new to this world, buy 710 to my girl as a gift. Now she wants a specific ringtone. But need Zune (it refuse to install) Windows Embedded S 7, downloaded 2 times and always get error.
So I was wondering if is there a way to set the ringtone on the go, for example in Android that is the world I know the most, you can set it, just need a file explorer then copy the file to the folder Ringtone in your SD Card, and viola you got to ringtones and there is the file you just copied. Any similar in Windows 7.8?.

2: Use a meaningful thread title. This one fails that test, hard. I read (almost) every thread in this forum section; most people won't bother with one that has a title like this.
3: Always search before posting. There are multiple apps that can convert MP3 to ringtones for WP7.

1.Thanks for that advice.
2.You are right from now will try to write a better title to my threads.
3. I always do. But no luck. Could you point me to any of those apps.
Thanks
My WP7 device is currently out of commission, but a search for "mp3 ringtone" on the WP8 marketplace turns up literally dozens of apps, many of which I know work on WP7 and some of which are explicitly to do what you need.
Alternatively, you could try solving the problem with Zune. What is the *exact* version of Windows you're trying to install it on?

If you're phone is dev unlocked or interop unlocked, you can always use my R1ng3D app , otherwise there are some good ringtone apps on the marketplace.

Will try your advice and try the app that the developer point me to. The windows is Windows Embedded Standar 7. The Zune thing is the last one I want to try, cuz want on the go solution.

Wow thanks a lot, that came in handy! :good:
Where did you get it from? I noticed it is in version 1.0.2 (see Settings > About), however latest version on CM GitHub (github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager/tree/cm-11.0) only says 1.0.1 in its changelog... Did you extract it from a ROM? Any idea why this version (with actualised changelog) cannot be found anywhere on CM infrastructure (gerrit, github...)?

Extracting from a ROM is the quickest way and most ROMs have 1.0.2 in them.

You mean, compared to building from source ? This wasn't the reason why I was asking: I was just trying to find a definitive answer on "what's the latest version of this app", and official source code is always the best option to sort out such enquiry
It seems strange to me that most ROMs have an 1.0.2 version while CM repos don't seem to contain anything higher than 1.0.1 (by changelog comparison). So my question remains: where does that updated version come from?
Cheers

You were probably looking at the cm-10.2 branch lol. The default branch of CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager is cm-10.2 if you look here: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_CMFileManager/branches

I thought so at first, but if you look at this branch's CHANGELOG.md file, you'll see it hasn't been modified in two years and mentions the "1.0.1" version as the latest one. This is why I've precisely mentioned the branch URL in my first post, but because of my inability to post links you might have overlooked it Thanks for your investigations nonetheless!

Look in AndroidManifest.xml
Didn't see that you already mentioned you looked in cm-11 branch, they just haven't update the changelog but the app that gets compiled is 1.0.2.

Thanks, this one does indeed mention 1.0.2! However, where does the changelog entry in the app's "Settings > About" screen come from then?

Makes sense Is it a recurring part in any Android app (I'm no dev so pardon the naivety of my question(s))? Still, I believe think they could update that CHANGELOG.md file at some point, that would clear up some confusion...
Do you know of any other good free/libre file manager? Although this one quite pleased me when I discovered Cyanogenmod a few weeks ago (I'm pretty new to Android, just got my first droid phone last month), which is why I wanted to install it on my current OmniROM, it doesn't seem to be actively developed. I'm just wondering which features I could have a need for in the near future that this file manager doesn't offer... Thanks.
I normally use CM App Installer from the play store to get the file manager and the torch app

In this case it's raw text, but you can put images in there as well (any files in fact). Files in res/raw won't be processed/compiled, it'll just be added to the package.
For example, in CMFileManager the changelog (excerpt):
Code:
Version 1.0.2
-------------------
* move bookmarks and history into a navigation drawer (by Florian Edelmann)
If you wanted to use that in strings.xml you would have to put them in <string> tags:
Code:
<string name="changelog">Version 1.0.2
-------------------
* move bookmarks and history into a navigation drawer (by Florian Edelmann)
</string>
(For those reading this in Tapatalk, you can't see the xml tags since it handles it differently)
In some cases it can cause issues, and it's sometimes it's better not to clog up strings.xml with a large amount of text (like this changelog). Also easier to modify in some cases (again, like a changelog).
I use Root Explorer, but it's a paid app. There's a free version but afaik it can't modify files which need root access.

Nice, thanks for the tip this looks interesting! However, as the author says in the app description he builds them himself when he has time to do so. Therefore pulling them from a current nightly or latest M release (as Lethargy mentioned) seems to be as good (and that is one less person to rely upon). I also wanted to replace omniROM's Launcher3 by CM's Trebuchet, so I'll have a go at it (thanks to MultiROM ).

Thanks for your explanations, I better understand now.
Concerning the file manager, I'm looking specifically for free/libre software app (as in "open source", but I don't like this expression and prefer to stick to Richard Stallman's definition). A search in F-Droid didn't turn in that many results, so that's why I was asking "at large"... I know many apps on the Play Store are libre software, but because the store doesn't mention their license it gets pretty tricky to find them. I try to always favour free/libre apps when I can.

If you ever want anything explained feel free to ask me in a PM
I'm not too sure of any others then. :silly: I'd just stick to CM File Manager if you specifically want a decent one that's open source. I just prefer Root Explorer over CM File Manager since it's a little better for root file management and it can access SMB (so I can access files on my PC without bothering to plug in my USB cable so often).
Maybe look around XDA for one.

Sure, will do. Thanks for the very amicable offer, I must admit I often find myself quite lost within the Android realm

Makes sense. Well for now I'm indeed fine with CMFM, and I've found a few alternatives thanks to http://alternativeto.net/software/open-manager/?license=opensource&platform=android (still can't post links sorry okay, now it looks like I can, that's nice). XDA forums are such a great resource for anything mobile/telephony related! It is rare that a single website gathers the biggest part of a development community. So great.
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Does it work on Lollipop?
