[Q] Restore apps from external SD card - General Questions and Answers

Hi All,
Just recently updated and installed CM9 ROM on my p5100. I need to restore the apps on my external SD Card. I checked from the Settings > Storage and still see that my External SD Card still has data in it. i have tried to unmount and re-mount it but still I dont have my apps back. I tried installing ES file Explorer from google paly and it shows I already have the app. Please, please help.
Thank you!

What app are you using to restore? and how did you make the backup? Restoring depends on how you made the back up in the 1st place.

ROM Manager\CWM Issues

Hey all,
Im having a strange issue w/ ROM manager. My nandroid backup works fine, and can be seen while in CWM, but when you go into ROM manager, and go to "Manage backups", no backups can be seen, deleted, restored, etc. (all from wtihin ROM Manager)
They are being stored on my external sd card in /clockworkmod (I haven't moved them, and I have no idea why it cant see them.
Could ROM manager be looking on the Internal SD for backups? If so, why would it do that when only the external sd is accessible in recovery.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think it is the exact opposite.
Recovery only uses your SD card. Rom Manager is looking for your SD card but your rom has it "Sdcard" = Internal Storage and "External Storage" = SDcard.
So that is the reason. Just keep doing what you are doing. Rom manager isn't required.
If you used a rom like CM7, it reverses the storage so Internal = MMC1, and SDCard=SDcard. Thus everything plays nice.

[Q] Apps in SD card and custom ROMs

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this has been asked before.
I'm using Virtuous Unity 1.31. Let say I have several apps installed and I move them (via manage applications) to the SD card. All works fine.
Let's say a new version comes out and I flash the new ROM, doing a full data and cache wipe in the process.
When I re-install all the apps, they'll be installed in the phone memory by default, and not the SD card. Does this mean that the app data on the SD card from the previous install is redundant, since the OS will presumably recognise the app in the phone memory. Is there any way to determine which apps were moved to the SD card and subsequently, free up the space?
Cheers,
Bump?
Any one with any ideas? Or is my original post confusing? ;p

Correct me if i'm wrong, but your problem is that you want to restore your data app from sd card and your are not sure cause they are already in phone memory? Or something different ? Because if you only want to put your apps from phone storage in sd-card again you can do it, you'll overwrite the older same apps..
You can try the app in my signature (SD Maid) to free up space.

Hanisa, my problem is that before I flash a new ROM, I usually do a wipe, which means when the new ROM is flashed in, it'll be "as stock" without any of my apps.
When I restore all my apps, either using Titanium Backup or the Android Marketplace, they'll be installed into the phone memory by default.
If for example I have Minisquadron installed and moved to the SD card before the wipe, when I re-install it, it will be in the phone memory by default. This means the data already on the SD card (before the wipe) is just wasted space.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot and see if it works for me.

I wanna format but keep photos... Help?

His what it is I am running out of space on my internal memory. I want to wipe my phone back to the bare basics... No apps + their data. But I don't wanna loose my photos and my PC had broke down so I can't back then up on there and I don't have An external SD card. Any way of doing this. I have CWM of that helps.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda premium
this won't be easy, use someones computer. why do you want to format?
You can manually remove items from internal SD using a file explorer such as ES File explorer, then uninstall all apps using an uninstaller, or manually by going to Settings>Manage Apps and clicking on each one of them and uninstalling.
However wiping with CWM shouldn't format the internal sd - it should just remove everything in /system (System apps, ROM), /data (all apps+data), /cache and /sdcard/.android_secure (Apps on SD)
But i'm not sure if its possible to install a new ROM using CWM without an external SD Card (CWM can't read the internal one)
Hi Cav3,
You have a problem here, as poster 314 said, you cant use CWM without an external SD card...
The easiest way to back up your photos or any other files you want is to install an app like dropbox or box.net (BTW if you install box.net app on your LG Phone and log in using the app you will get 50gig of free space) and then upload all your files to there.
You really need an SD Card, even a small one that will fit the CWM files on (dont quote me but I'm sure its tiny so a 64 mb card might even do it).
You might also want to try (after backing up your files) going to settings -> SD card & phone storage, and formatting from there, and also Settings -> Privacy and trying the Factory reset in there so you might not need CWM.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Apps not being transferred to SD Card!

Hello Im having a very serious issue with my phone. I cant move apps to my SD Card for some reason. my phone is rooted and i tried using app2usb or whatever its called but still no luck i know my phone can read the SD because i have songs on it and my music player can play the songs on my SD but i just dont understand why its not letting me transfer apps nor letting me install apps into it. PLEASE HELP!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4g from tmobile with custom rom, Cynogen Mod 9 ICS. I also have a 8gb SD card
I have also tried deleting smdl2tmp1.asec but i cant find that in my phone nor my SD Card
Try ZDbox to move your apps to sd card
I personally use App2SD but I think for custom ROMs, ZDbox is more reliable

Does your phone detect your sd card?
If yes you can use force2sd.

I would suggest trying titanium backup, but first be sure your phone detect the sd card

I have the same problem like you, then I backup all my data in sdcard saved in computer and use minitool partition to format ext2 and main partition. Now copy data to sd card (main partition) again. Next step you use your recovery tool as CWM (your device have been rooted) to restore. I have fixed that problem.

[Q] Error installing app Can not install USB storage or SD card

I recently updated my external SD card.
Transfered all the information from the old one to the new one, VIA Windows PC.
Seems like all went fine until I went to one program I thought was installed PPSSPP
Seeing as it wasnt showing up now I tried re-installing it.
Now with the play store it says after downloading that the app
Could not be installed on USB storage or SD card.
Looking at troubleshooting here is what I did so far.
I did look for the file smdl2tmp1 and did not find it anywhere.
Unmounted the SD and rebooted , install of PPSSPP and says same error.
Removed SD and booted , still same error on install.
Dirty Flash Rom.
loaded Rom Toolbox lite and changed app2sd location.
Same error on everything I tried.
The only thing I can come up with is that there is a file that is causing problems that I cannot find where it is.
Any suggestions without doing a full flash and reinstall?
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Carbon Rom 4.4.1
Any thing to help is greatly appreciated
Update tried downloading and installing another app and getting same error , on something that I never installed before.
Update 2. Wiped SD internal and external , did not work. Same error

Titantium Backup hangs up on installing backed up Apps.
Play store says incuffecent room on a few of the app updates, some of them go fine.

are you sure the SD card is not fake? for years now, ebay fradulent sellers peddle 4gb cards with a 32gb filesystem. After going over 4gb, the files are just copied to dev/null, but their names are still present in the allocation table
so plug your card to a computer and check it with any flashdrive utility
If you are unable to write in the external sdcard using a file manager too then - back up external card's data, connect to windows pc in usb mass storage mode and format it in fat32 format.
It should fix the issue.

This happened with the origional 32 GB card, then I did put a FAT32 64 GB card in the phone. Moved data over to new card.
It reads in windows fine. and both are fat 32.
Also tried installing without card installed and gave same error.
Titanium backup files will not reload, and even some amazon ones wont, but updates do most of the time.
Another thing I noticed is that my internal is GB for apps, that has about 300 MB left. I think this may have something to do with it so moved data over to SD.
Just tested about 3 restarts and finally went with a paid app, Tried changing default install to auto , internal and SD. didtn really make a difference.
