First, I'd like the thank all the developers on this site for the great work they have done. My HTC devices have greatly enjoyed all the upgrades and hacking over the year with all of your help. That said, I'm not a developer, but I am wondering if anyone has had this idea yet.
For those of you who are not familiar with hulu.com, I'd suggest checking it out. hulu is a partnership between NBC and Fox to bring streaming video of their most recent shows to the net. Along with TV shows, they also feature a growing selection of full length movies.
Since there are a handful of ways in which we have been able to get youtube videos to play on our devices, I was wondering if it would be possible to do the same thing with hulu. I'm not sure how anyone would go about this, but thought this could be a starting point for a good discussion on if it is even possible to do.
Any thoughts?
I'd actually be very interested in this as well. Thanks in advance.
Wow! I just signed up for Hulu, and I've been hearing about it from friends and now here, lol! Yeah, it would be awesome to stream this on my Titan.
You can watch Hulu with the Skyfire beta but its a little choppy on 3G
Yeah, I was thinking that myself but you probably can't go fullscreen.
I know you can't on Youtube, anyways.
Hulu DOES work on the newest skyfire beta. But it is rather choppy (youtube works almost 100% now on there.)
But that is only running on a WIFI connection. As I can't seem to get skyfire to connect over 3g or gprs with my rom.
I've been able to use Hulu with Skyfire as well, but it's not easy at all to get to the shows you want and then you have to zoom in just right even to see the video clearly. Oh and it's choppy as hell. A dedicated player may be able to fix all these problems and make the service a deffinite must on your ppc
I watch Hulu videos all the time with skyfire, and they play flawlessly over 3G, and I can navigate the site easily.
Ok, so the people who have access to the Skyfire beta testing can play it on their device (Touch users have to overclock their devices to get smooth video). If we leave it at that, there's no reason for anyone to develop a standalone Youtube Player. But we do have one and I'm sure a lot more people like using that over Skyfire since the interface in much quicker and easier to use.
so... back to the question at hand. Is it possible to make a standalone player?
bump - id also be interested in such a player
Im not sure but, wouldn't you need to get a hold of Flashlite 3 for Windows Mobile before this would be possible since Hulu uses flash 8 or 9?
bump me 2 ***
would b amazing
can't beleive...
...that's been over a year and no atemps where made for a stand alone version of Hulu. that's sad, as I'm no longer able to play Hulu on skyfire any more
My problem is not being able to access it without getting the proxy error. No matter how I connect, Hulu still thinks I'm using a proxy server and won't allow connection because that's how they stop users outside the US from using the service (copyright issues with content providers).
LIVE TV ON YOUR PHONE
I wrote this guide along time ago in other xda-developers thread, this is the updated version.
There are several ways for watching live TV on your phone, I don't watch live TV on my phone, hope you find it useful though.
(UPDATE 10/15/2010)
TV SERIES ON DEMAND ARE AVAILABLE HERE: http://x.vu/179650
(UPDATE 7/14/2010)
First -MobiTV
After testing it out it is one of the best apps for watching TV on your phone, there are 2 versions, one included on the USA HD2 and the version found on the mobitv website.
Back in early 2009 I manage to hack the 1 day free trail version, it was after they release a patched version and removing the .vars wouldnt work anymore however I never notify mobitv about it, I never post my findings online because I didn't wanna get sued, however the hack doesn't work anymore.
Second -Mobile free TV http://www.mobilefree.tv
Never tested this one out.
Third -Skyfire http://www.skyfire.com/
Skyfire is one of the best ways to watch live tv.
Some useful links to use with skyfire are:
http://www.myfreetvsite.com
http://wwitv.com
http://www.mobilefree.tv
If you know more links please post your comments.
Fourth -SPB Online or SPB TV http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/tv/
One amazing application with poor channel lineup, the programing suck (at least for me) thats all im going to say.
(update)
as off June 8th 2010 SPB TV is NOW FREE
Fifth -HandiTV http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=22918
I used this app once, didn't really like it.
Sixth -artn3r’s mobile tv http://winmo.artn3r.com/?p=12#more-12
In its early stages didn't got may attention because it had channels in German and some other language however it may be useful to you.
"This is my first windows mobile application, it’s a player for online
streaming content like movies or radio. I started this app because
everytime I wanted to view the tv news i had to open the opera
browser and navigate to the specific website. With this application,
only 3 taps are needed to watch your favourite tv or radio show!"
Seventh -Online TVx http://www.onlinetvx.com/
800+ channels this app will keep you entertained for hours, one of the features that many of you will quickly notice and will definitely like is that it has ADULT channels such as Playboy.
"Online TVx is one of the most popular and downloadable online TV programs in the Internet. This complete professional program gives you an instant access to more than 1000 TV channels categorized by genres and countries."
MORE LIVE TV LINKS CAN BE FOUND IN THIS THREAD HERE (which is the actual FULL guide)
Post your comments, links and programs you use.
wow cool thanks for this.
Thank you very much
thanks alot
downloading mobitv now if u know an hacker dont post here but email me xD
Nice one, thanks very much will test it tomorrow..
Too bad none of those "TV" apps show anything worth watching. Wish cable TV would start streaming even if for a fee. At least that way someone could watch something worth watching.
I still think ORB is really your best bet right now. You have to have a PC at home with a TV tuner - but it works quite well.
www.orb.com
...its freeware - and what you end up with is you can stream any TV channel you can get on your home cableTV or satalite to your PPC or any other computer. Really kinda cool.

Actually I stop working on hacking mobiTV along time ago since I don't watch TV and as soon as some one hacks it and makes a post online the guys over at mobiTV are on your case in no time trying to sue you.
i have SPB TV on my HD2, if i click on a channel it says Opening.. goes into landscape and goes back with the headin Opening and it stays there.
Works fine on my HD2
but Ihave a strong signal and get pretty fast download speeds (1.5 mps). Works even better on wi-fi speeds of 3.5+. A couple of stations seem to load the buffer and play then load and play again no matte what the signal and download speed.

Re: [APP] myPlayer - BBC iPlayer client [0.40b 11-Jun-2010] BETA
You know BBC forced the shutdown of beebplayer cos they didn't want this functionality so I'd be careful how much time you put into this but keep up the good work all the same.
Sent from my T-Mobile_G2_Touch using Tapatalk
Yeah, I was going to ask, is this a Beta of the official app? If not, I still have Beebplayer, how is this better? (And how long do you expect it to last before it gets pulled? )
Are the BBC making an official one for android?
Just tried the my player app though, pretty good
Smoother than Beebplayer was.
Hi all,
Was using this on WM previously now usng it on my Streak great app.

disappeared!
Agh I want to try this out but it's fine from the Market!!!
Anyone got the. Apk??
Can't find it on the market Anyone got a direct link?
WHY "An internet connection that is UK based" ??
I would guess because iPlayer wont work for anyone outside of the UK...
WHY "An internet connection that is UK based" ??
because the bbc iplayer only provides it's video streams to those of us living in the uk.
maybe a proxy server would help those of you living outside the uk?
Yeah, maybe if the software could come with something to setup proxy settings it might help those outside the U.K.
I'd install it and see if you had already made one but I'm testing out a little ROM development, the interface looks pretty sick though from the pics
Found a bug, it wouldn't pause for me when I was watching stuff on it.
Yep, pause button does nothing.
Like that app.
Great App!
I'd been searching all over for beeb player, and had pretty much accepted that I'd missed the chance. This is a really well made application.
Video was a little pixelated on wifi to begin with, but seems to smooth out after 20 secs or so.
You can get beebPlayer from hemorrdroids.net (link in my sig)
*** Updated to version 0.50b ***
Change list:
- Supports new BBC iPlayer layout
- Fixed pause button
One thing that I seem to be missing in the marketplace is apps that does live-streaming of video, the latest to be added to the list is the MLB app that has audio-streaming, but no video streaming of live games, so is it WP that doesn't support this, or is it the developers that doesn't want to?
Live streaming from or to the device? Otherwise there doesn't seem to be an issue with live streaming to the device. Considering a number of RDC's use similar features. No clue about streaming from the device though.
Stream to the device, take my MLB example: At Bat 12 for Android and IOS can show live gamestreams , but WP7 can not. (And the WP one is even more expensive, but that's another case). An then there is sites such as Ustream, justin.tv etc that doesn't seem to be available on the platform.
If I remember there was a 3rd part Ustream app, but watching livestreams didn't work.

What is the "live gamestreams"? If you mean "live sport game events": WP7 can perfectly stream live video; but seems like a content providers don't care much about WP7 support.
Yeah, livestreaming of games, thanks I guess we just have to put some preassure on the developers then.
I've been looking for an app that does this for me as well, mainly for gaming content. There are quite a few out there that seem to be able to stream live video content, like the RedBullTV app and I believe there's a Youtube Live app as well, so with my limited developing-knowledge, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
FlashVideo For WP7 has recently added support for several "Live Video" sites, mostly sports at the moment though. Not sure if this specific update has hit marketplace yet, but the changelog are up on his site. Can't link a source due to low post-count, but it can be found if you look up the app in the marketplace.
I've been briefly corresponding with the developer as well, asking if he would add support for justin/twitch.tv and own3d.tv, and I believe he would seriously look into it, but it seemed to something that would be added in the future because the sites "have many protections", in his own words.
Guys, as I've said before: technically it's very possible, not a big problem, live streaming are perfectly supported by WP7 (via MS Smooth Streaming technology etc.). The big problem is CONTENT. Nobody will develop app to play stolen content - for ethical reason or because app will be banned from the mp shortly. So direct your questions to your sports channel providers...

What of sites like Justin.tv who seem to encourage people to make use of their tech for own applications?
We believe that the future of video is live. Our API enables you to use Justin.tv's infrastructure, for free, to easily power live video in your own applications.

I can't link to the source directly but it can be found if you go to justin.tv and click on API at the very bottom.
justin.tv/p/api
Again, my knowledge of development in general is very limited, so I have no real idea what the significance of this is... Would be grateful if someone could enlighten me and if it could mean the possibility of a third-party app?
Thanks.
This topic is about professional sport events live video streaming. I don't understand why did you mention justin.tv...

From what I gathered, OP was asking about live-streaming apps for WP7 in general and he also brought up both Ustream and Justin.tv in another post so I figured it was relevant to the discussion.
Is there any significant difference between "professional sport event live video streaming" and services like Ustream and Justin.tv? The latter have provided streams for sport and competitive events in the past as well, and continues to do so.
Nope, you are wrong. He wants to have "livestreaming of games". I don't watch games but I'm pretty sure there are no free live broadcasting of the Red Sox or Bruins games on Ustream and Justin.tv, for example.
P.S. 2 OP: you should mark your question as answered 'cause WP can handle live streams. Your second question "why I can't find app/service for that" is a different question
Fair enough! I guess this is what confused me...

Regardless, I guess it's a discussion for another thread. Thanks for your clarification regarding live streaming and WP7, it's something I've been wondering about as well!
And again, to OP, the developer for FlashVideo for WP7 has stated that he will add support for several "live sports streaming sites", I don't know if there is anything of interest to be found there but still worth a mention I feel.
By the way, as for temporary solution you may use Skype and broadcast live event yourself from the home PC equipped with video capturing board and connected to your cable box
I just happened to update the pluto.tv app today. I happened to notice on the Leanback launcher that there was a "Live Channels" icon/banner. When I started "LIve Channels", it gave me the option to include pluto.tv as a source for channels! I looked at the Google I/O schedule and apparently this will be discussed this "feature" tomorrow. This gives me hope for the future of Android TV!

Awesome! Cord cutters rejoice.
Endgadget did a quick blurb about it. Looks like early content providers include: "AOL, Bloomberg, TED, The Huffington Post, Pluto, Vevo and European streaming video service Zattoo."
I wouldn't mind if Hulu, CBS News, & some of the other networks built on top of this platform...
I just tried it today with Pluto and I think it just blew my mind with what I suddenly realised was possible with this framework. It does turn a app into an almost TV watching like experience. Just need more apps to now take advantage of it.
Edit:
I notice I have Ted, Vevo and the Huffington Post but none of these are options to add to Live channels. Can't find Zattoo on the Nexus player even though I am in the UK and it has a troubleshooting page on their website.
Wasn't it like that before? not on nexus but on my forge I could select HDhomeRun View to select my source for live-tv channels.
I didn't see any update to Live Channels app I think it was like that already.
I love the overall concept but I hope they improve the stability of Live Channels. Right now Live Channel stutters when changing Pluto TV "Channels."
I am really tempted to pick up an HDHomeRun Extend so I can add real channels meshed with internet based channels.
In the ideal world, I would love to have SlingTV, CBSNews, WatchESPN, FoxSportsGo, & potentially other services like Hulu & USA integrate into live channels. This way, I have one channel "guide" to view all the "channels."

Yeah, I have the app installed and working. It hasn't shown up as a source in live channels yet...

Installed Pluto on my Sony Bravia ATV and it then popped up a Streaming Channels Icon, however no video is displayed....it's so close but not quite for the Sony's will have to try some of the other apps listed.

Can you launch videos through the actual pluto app or do you not get any videos their either?
Videos played through the app work fine, just not in the channels icon.
I've heard that a new firmware is imminent for it, maybe that will be based on 5.1 and will fix my casting and this streaming channel problem.
Can the live channels app be ported to mobiles? Been looking for an epg that uses iplayer uktvplay itvhub etc so you can click whatevers on and it opens instead of having to look through all the afromentioned apps.
