[ROOT + CWM 6.0.1.5 or 5.5.0.4] Lenovo IdeaPad A2107A (-H) - Android General

The following post is just a TESTED collection of tools and procedures that were found over at XDA forum or elsewhere on the Internet.
I do not take any credit for all those nice scripts and manuals - I just put them together for the young community of IdeaPad A2107A owners.
Below you will find methods of getting root and Clockwork Mod Recovery v 6.0.1.5 on IdeaPad A2107A (I own the -H version with dual SIM and ca. 4 GB of internal memory).
All processes were tested by me and are working well but obviously you are responsible for your actions.
My device runs on ICS 4.0.3, compilation A2107A-H_S341 and has a couple of European languages (tablet bought in Poland).
What you need is installed ADB drivers so the PC can "talk" to you tablet. You will find a lot of guides on the net - just make sure Windows device manager shows Android Device - Android ADB Interface or something close to that.
I also advise to enable USB debugging and allow installing applications from unknown sources - all in your tablet's settings.
Once you make sure you have done the above you're good to go.
So let's go!
Download this: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5o7dm16d430lwal (un7zip) and read as follows:
1 - Root
The method I chose is for patient people - the device will reboot 3 times during this process.
a) connect your tablet to the PC, open "1 - 4.03root" folder and run "root.bat"
b) just after you run the .bat the device will reboot and in the command prompt you will see "Press any key to continue . . ." - WAIT until the tablet boots up completely. When you see the lockcreen THEN hit a key in the command prompt.
c) the above will happen 2 more times - always WAIT for the tablet to boot completely.
This process will install Superuser and RootExplorer so find those apps and see if the root works.
2 - Backup the whole ROM that is on your device - will be useful with making the CWM recovery.img file.
For this you will need ca. 2GB of memory so I advise at least 4GB sdcard.
I also advise to go to the settings and in the memory tab set the "Default write disk" to "SD storage" - this makes the microSD the primary "sdcard" - makes things easier with backups etc.
ALSO in the settings set the screen to stay on for at least 10 minutes - this is how long it will take to do the full ROM dump - important to keep the script alive.
To avoid any issues turn the flight mode on so no new "data" is received by the device.
Once you're done open "2 - Backup" folder from my 7zip and copy the "gscript" folder to the root of your sdcard. Now install "GScriptLite.apk" and run it (needs root access!).
In the app hit the menu button and pick "Add Script" ->"Need SU?" must be checked -> "Load file" -> select "back_mt6575_a4_v2c.sh" -> save and click the script.
As I said - wait ca 10 minutes for the scrip to finish. Now you will have a nice backup in the SD - look for "backup_v2" folder - copy it to your PC.
3 -Mobileuncle - it's in the Google Play Store but you won't find it with our tablet - supposedly incompatible. Bull*hit!
Open "3 - Mobileuncle" folder, copy the apk to your device and install. We will come back to this later.
4 - How about the CWM? Yes!
Open "4 - CWM 6015" - you will find a PDF there - read the instructions. The subfolder "michfood" contanis all the scripts you need so you don't have to download anything else.
ATTENTION - the "recovery.img" used in this process is YOUR "recovery.img" that you dumped in step 2. So find your backup from step 2 and the original "recovery.img" from your ROM.
ATTENTION - our device is MT6575 so you pick nr 1 in the command prompt.
5 - Once you have the new "recovery.img" with CWM (it is actually smaller than the original file) copy it to the root of your sdcard.
Now open the Mobileuncle Tools you installed in step 3 and hit "Recovery Update".
There, at the very top of the screen you will see your new CWM recovery file - hit it and then confirm the update. It takes a second!
Now you will be asked to boot into recovery mode - go ahead, try it
If the tablet booted in CWM then you are all set!
REMEMBER - to go into the recovery mode while the device is OFF you need to:
1 - hold the power button for ca 3 seconds
2 - let it go and in the same moment press BOTH Vol + and Vol - buttons.
REMEMBER 2 - the CWM 6.0.1.5 makes backups in a bit different way than the old CWM - read here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846446
It also appears that the key to modding our tablet is the MT6575 processor - a lot of tools just need to support this processor, the device itself is not so important.
All the best.
Mike.

------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 1 ---------------------------------------------------------
For those who are running the same compilation as I am (A2107A-H_S341):
- you can download my recovery file from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?um372gh6ayf6t6w
To use it you need to do:
1 - Root
(optional backup with GScriptLite.apk)
2 - flash the recovery file with Mobileuncle
Be careful and make sure you have a backup if you want to try this file with another compilation.
Cheers.
------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 2 ---------------------------------------------------------
Tested (by user: manwithmanypiercings) USB drivers are in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34651039&postcount=51
------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 3 ---------------------------------------------------------
I think there is even easier way than the one I originally posted above.
BUT I cannot be sure that it will work with all of you - the reason is that I made so many changes to my A2107A-H that I do not know whether this method works "just because it's universal" or because my tablet was tweaked far enough.
On the other hand when you consider it reasonably it looks like it's quite simple and there is no particular reason why it shouldn't work with a stock A2107A.
So...
What you need:
1 - this package: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?fbuzi5xjofs7vgf
2 - PC running Windows 7 would be the best (7 gave me no problems at all - takes 1 minute to do it). I made it on Windows 8 as well but there is a lot more fuss to install the proper driver.
What you do:
1 - turn on USB Debugging on your tablet
2 - connect the tablet to your PC (if it's the 1st, some default drivers will install - that's ok)
3 - tap on the notifications area in the "Connect as" change to "MTP" - this is quite important !
4 - from the downloaded package run the "Flash_tool.exe"
- click "Scatter-loading" on the right and find "MT6575_Android_scatter_emmc.txt"
- in the list in the lower part of the window you MUST have the "PRELOADER" (super important) and "RECOVERY" ticked and leading to the correct files. The PRELOADER = "preloader_lenovo75_a2_ics.bin" (in the package) and the RECOVERY is the recovery file of your choice -> there are 3 in the package - pick the one you want. You can flash them over and over so if you don't like one then try the other.
5 - click "Download" above - you will see a prompt saying that not all images were loaded - that is fine - we only want to flash the RECOVERY - so click "Yes"
6 - now the Flash tool is waiting for the tablet - press "reset" on the back - Windows will recognize a new device (and WILL NOT find the driver unless you have done it before) - no worries, you have the correct driver.
7 - open Windows "Device manager" and locate the MT65..... unrecognised device -> update / install driver -> point Windows to "USB VCOM Driver" folder from the package and pick your system. My Windows 7 found the driver on the spot but asked to confirm the install - "insecure" driver - I obviously clicked "install anyway" and so should you.
8 - once the driver is loaded the Flash tool will flash the new recovery file - you will see some colour progress bars in the program - at the end you should see a green circle.
That is it. Unplug the tablet, press reset on the back and you can now enter the recovery mode.
FUN FACT: the "reset" button on the back is not really a reset button, it's more like physical cut off button to temporarily disconnect the battery.

I have the Lenovo A2107A under Vodafone's brand Vodafone Smart Tab II 7
It has Android version 4.0.4 and compilation: A2107A_A404_010_002_120913_VODA
Imanaged to root it and install CWM using this thread. But somehow I was not able to create the CWM modded recovery.img
I used the one provided here and it worked fine.
Thanks for this.

I can't connect tablet to PC

Hi there,
Try those drivers: http://www.mediafire.com/?vx2hyv7dpwlmeyy
They come from the current Android SDK but I am running a 64 bit system and I'm not sure if those drivers will work with 32 bit systems.
Fingers crossed!

I tried with yor recommend dirvers and with a lot of others and doesn't work. I have to unrecognised denices in Device Manager - A2107A-H and MTP.
I am very upset about Lenovo because their support doesn't exist.

First of all, a ton of thanx to csns for posting this detailed procedure along with all required scripts and tools...
I have just one question...Which Modified ROM did you install as I see you have unlocked calling feature in the video you posted???
I asked because the MOD ROM by pemergency in the other thread is for the 16 GB and creates some issues in the device...But your's is 4 GB, as is mine...
Thanx in advance

I'm glad you find my post useful.
As for the calling feature - it's not actually working
You see, to have the calling app (in other words "the phone" app) in the app drawer all you need to do is change one tiny value in framework-res.apk.
This value is telling the system weather the whole device is supposed to handle voice calls or not. I just tricked the system to make the Phone.apk visible but there is a lot more do be done in order to make a real call over the cellular network.
I've just had this tablet for a week and I didn't have much time to dig into this topic. Let's see what the weekend brings
Be patient, I think it's just a matter of time when someone posts a user friendly guide... Or search yourself and share what you find with the community.
Take care.

Well, this happened to me once and I think the reason was that the path was too long - I guess it may have something to do with the fact that the .bat is a simple "program" and can have some problems with handling long paths.. specially with "national" character in them.
Try finding a location as close to the root of the drive as possible, and make sure you have full R/W access. Or try with a pendrive for example.
Since you made a backup of your ROM I think you are quite safe with using the recovery I uploaded - first post -> UPDATE 1.
They seem to fit all 2107A devices. If not I will tell you how to restore the original recovery from your backup.
You can also read UPDATE 3 I just made - your choice.

Thanx
Hello csns,
Thanx to your help, I have also got CWM recovery working on my device.
BTW I saw these two posts on a forum in Russian (I guess)...I used google translate and am pretty sure these two posts that I provide links for below have two modified ROMs with everything working, including phone and radio !!! The only draw back is that once you flash these ROMs you'll get Russian language, which can be changed to English from the language menu
I plan to fo it myself as well tomorrow, would let you know the outcome

and
http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=286687&st=440 (go down to the post labelled "Прошивка Tasemart
MOD 1.1")
and of course you can also try the "Angeleas_Final" modified ROM also that I'll upload and provide links to tomorrow
Thanx again for all your help !!!

I also had many trouble getting the cwm bat file to work. It is very picky about its path and arguments on Win7.
I moved the michfood folder to C: and moved my own recovery.img to C:\michfood\recovery.old
cd C:\michfood
cwmr\ 6015.bat recovery.old
That worked - otherwise it wouldnt finish the cpio stuff.
Reworking that horrible script to work on linux would have probably taken less time -_-
Anyway - thanks!

Permissions problems on Windows7

My solution:
It was required to use a directory not to deep in folder structures, so the best is as short as possible like "C:\michfood".
I had to add "Full Control" permissions for "everyone" to the "michfood"-directory and enable the "replicate permissions to subfolders"-option (I don't know the exact designation because I use it in german ... )
I had to delete an existing "Recovery" folder inside the "michfood"-directory from earlier attempts to create the new file and for this I had to take over the ownership of the "Recovery" folder before I was able to delete it.
The original Recovery.img must be in a different folder than "michfood". This can be on the desktop but for a shorter path it could be in the root directory.
I had success after copying "cwmr 6015.bat" to "go.bat" (it's shorter and does not contain any space in it) and calling it from command line from its directory( C:\>cd C:\michfood ) with: "go C:\Recovery.img" ( I had Recovery.img on C:\ ).

5/12/2011 : Thread marked depreciated due to the recent movement to get the 3.1 Honeycomb update installed. While parts of this tutorial may remain valid, the overall synopsis is not. For those of you that have used this guide I can vouch for the procedure in the thread linked below as a viable option to install the 3.1 update.
Thread to 3.1 Android Update
This tutorial was written for the NooB’s among us (like me) that are new to this stuff and are having a hard time “piecing together” all of the steps. While I am actually a not quite a beginner, NONE of these steps/methods/files have been developed by me. I have simply compiled the procedure in a document that I hope will be useful. With this in mind all the credit belongs to the many individuals that contribute in the XDA Developers forum. I have reviewed many posts by many people and have used all of the information along the way. I have intentionally chosen NOT to mention any specific names for fear that I will leave someone out. If you see anything herein that reminds you of something you posted then it probably is true and you are respectfully THANKED!!!
THIS TUTORIAL WAS CREATED AND TESTED ON THE US WIFI ZOOM. THE PC WAS RUNNING VISTA 32BIT
As a courtesy I will attempt to keep this post up to date with links to revised files. Bear in mind that I performed my upgrade using the original information/links and it was successful. I suggest that since this tutorial is for beginners that you follow the ORIGINAL links to complete the guide. Once you get that far you should have a better understanding of the procedures and be ready to "experiment" by flashing new kernals, recoveries, rom's, etc., using directions found in the corresponding section(s) of the development forum. After-all that is the real reason for most of this stuff anyway. As an example.... there is a 5/3 update below which adds links to newer versions of the Tiamat Kernel and Clockwork Mod. While you could probably just download and use the updated versions of these files in conjunction with this tutorial, I have NOT personally verified this to work. If anyone does try, or if the Dev's want to chime in, please post so that I can update accordingly. Thanks.
5/3/2011 --- UPDATE: Added Links to updated Tiamat Kernel (1.4.1) & Clockwork Mod (3.0.2.8) and added links to discussion threads.
5/11/2011 --- NOTICE: If you are wanting to upgrade to the recently released 3.1 Honeycomb Update than I suggest you re-consider following this guide. The upgrade procedure requires that the device be stock or the update will fail. Furthermore there has not been a Kernel Developed yet that works with 3.1 and some users were complaining about issues with ClockWork Recovery after applying 3.1. See the development section for more information
A) Installing ADB
ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge and simplistically stated will be used to send commands to your XOOM using the keyboard on your PC. In essence your PC will be acting like a terminal. ADB is included in a package known as the Android SDK. The following steps should be taken to insure a successful install of the SDK, therefore giving you access to ADB.1. Install Java JDK : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-6u25-download-346242.htmla. Download appropriate Java SE Development Kit (JDK) from link above
b. Double click to Install JDK
c. Accept Setup Defaults2. Install SDK Starter Package: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.htmla. Download SDK Starter Package from link above. There are versions available for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. In case of Windows, both an installer and a zip file are available but there isn’t any need to use the installer as a formal installation is not required. Download the ZIP file.
b. Once you have downloaded the SDK, simply extract the compressed file to a location on your computer. In our case, we have extracted it to the root of our C drive and that makes [FONT=&quot]C:\android-sdk-windows[/FONT] the installation location of the SDK. From here onwards, we shall be referring to this location as the ‘SDK folder’.3. Download the SDK Platform Tools using the SDK Mamager.a. Browse to the SDK folder and launch SDK Manager.
b. When launching it for the first time, it will present you with a window to choose packages to install. The first option begins with ‘Android SDK Platform-tools’. Make sure it is checked, and uncheck all the other packages for now. You can check/uncheck a package by simply double clicking on the package. Again, the only package you want to install is the Android SDK Platform-Tools.
c. Once the process is done, you will have a ‘platform-tools’ folder inside your SDK folder. That folder will include ADB and all its dependencies.
d. Make a copy of the File “fastboot.exe” which is in the “tools” directory and place it in the “platform-tools” directory.B) Install XOOM USB Driver
Just to be sure your XOOM is recognized by your PC it is recommended that you install the latest USB drivers for your system.1. Install MotoHelper : http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-...tware_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Driversa. Download the Driver with MotoHelper from the Link above
b. Double Click downloaded file and follow on-screen instructions to install.C) Unlock Bootloader
Unlocking the bootloader gives you full control over the device so you can flash new Recovery’s, kernels, ROM’s, ETC. THIS STEP WILL DELETE ALL DATA AND SETTINGS ON YOUR XOOM.1. Put XOOM in Debug modea. On the device, go to home screen, press [FONT=&quot]Apps[/FONT] > >Settings>>Applications>>[FONT=&quot]Development[/FONT], and enable [FONT=&quot]USB Debugging[/FONT].
b. Now connect your XOOM to the PC via USB. New hardware installation should begin and it will start looking for and installing the drivers.
c. A prompt should appear that states the drivers were installed successfully. On my PC the AutoPlay Device Options also appeared. I clicked “Open Device to View Files” and saw the device Storage with 27.8 GB free of 28.7 GB.2. Execute ADB Commandsa. Open a command prompt by navigating to the ‘SDK Folder’, Holding the shift key, right clicking on the “platform-tools” folder and selecting “Open Command Window Here” from the popup menu.
b. In the new command window type: adb reboot bootloader and press enter.
c. Wait for the Dual Core screen with “Starting Fastboot protocol support” in the upper left corner to appear and then type: fastboot oem unlock in the command window and press enter. You should see: “To continue, follow instructions on the device’s display…”.
d. Read the WARNING on you XOOM and either Continue Below or Cancel following the on-screen instructions.
e. If you decided to continue then on the XOOM Push Volume Down Button to change the selection from “Cancel” to “I accept” and then press the Volume Up to select that choice.
f. You will be questioned again so Push Volume Down then Volume Up to confirm you want to UNLOCK your device. You will see “Device Unlock operation in progress…” “Formatting UDA”
g. When the operation completes the device will read”Device unlock operation done – rebooting…” and the device will reboot. The windows new hardware “gong” will sound a couple of times during this procedure. After this step when my XOOM rebooted I also saw an “MTP Device” driver Install dialog box on my PC. Unplug the device, and quickly perform the initial set-up. You can “Skip” any steps that will allow you to (like WiFi setup). Just get back to the home screen and continue below:
h. Verify that USB debugging is still enabled and if not re-enable it as outlined above.
i. Re-connect your XOOM to the PC and close any AutoPlay dialog.D) Install Custom Recovery
A custom recovery allows you to flash files created by community developers such as ROM’s, Radios, Kernels, Themes, ETC. It also allows you to perform special tasks such as system backup’s, partitioning, cache wiping, ETC. As of 4/28/2011 the generally accepted custom recovery for the XOOM is ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.5. Clockwork Discussion Threada. Download Clockwork Mod from here: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.5
3.0.2.8 ClockworkMod
b. Place the File “recovery.img” that you just downloaded in the “platform-tools” directory
c. In the previously open command window (if you closed it then re-open as described above) type: adb reboot bootloader and press enter.
d. The device will reboot into bootloader mode (as described above) and when this completes type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
e. Check the screen of your XOOM and see: “Flashing StorMgr partition recovery STATUS: - done!
f. Type: fastboot reboot in the command window and press enter.
g. Your XOOM should now boot with no noticeable changes.
h. In your command window type: adb reboot recovery
i. Your XOOM will reboot and an unfamiliar screen will appear. This is the “recovery” program and at this time you should simply verify that you see a reference to ClockworkMod Recovery in the upper left corner of the XOOM. This indicates that our efforts have been successful.
j. When my device rebooted into recovery I also saw additional Device Drivers install. This took a little while and I waited to do anything until I received the “Device Driver Installed Successfully” dialog.
k. Navigate in ClockworkMod Recovery by using the volume up/down to “move” and the power button to “select”. Look for reboot system, highlight it and hit the power button. Your zoom will reboot normally.
OPTIONAL STEPS
l. At some time later (AFTER YOU ARE ROOTED) to avoid the need to execute ADB commands to enter recovery, I suggest you look for a free application called “Quick Boot”, by Sirius Applications from the market.
m. Once Quick Boot is installed run it and simply select “Recovery” to boot into ClockworkMod. E) Install Custom (Tiamat)Kernel to your XOOM
The Tiamat Kernel we have chosen includes many advantages over the “stock” kernel most notably being support for the SD Card slot which as of this writing has still not been released by Moto. Tiamat Discussion Threada. Download the file “Tiamat_Xoom-v1.4.0.zip” from here: Tiamat Kernel 1.4.0
Tiamat Kernel 1.4.1 A big Thanks to Cam3era who acted as a gunia pig for this....Apparently you are better off flashing the 1.4.0 Kernal first and then flashing the 1.4.1. Details are in the Tiamat Thread
b. Make sure you have an SD Card in your XOOM. Some people are having issues with the system reporting the wrong size of the SD card and it has been suggested that you format your card in another android device prior to using it with your XOOM. Another “trick” was to use a small capacity card. Apparently this may still be a current issue so I recommend you format you card prior to use. I personally had a 1GB Micro SD that I formatted in my Android Phone.
c. Enter Recovery via adb by typing: adb reboot recovery in your terminal window and press enter.
d. Now, using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons on the XOOM to move the prompt and the power button to execute a selection: i. Go to "mounts and storage"
ii. Select "mount USB storage"
iii. Your SD Card will now be mounted on your computer. Copy the Tiamat kernel zip you downloaded above onto the SD Card.
iv. "Go Back" TWICE then go into "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard"
v. Navigate to the zip file and select it.
vi. Navigate to “Yes – Install Tiamat_Xoom-v1.4.0.zip” and select it. It will now flash and you will see some scrolling text and a progress indicator.
vii. Wait until it says “Install from sdcard complete.
viii. Back out to main menu and reboot.e. After the XOOM reboots (this could take a while) check to insure that USB debug mode is still enabled. If not, re-enable it as described above.F) Root the XOOM and Install Superuser APK
Root access is similar to “administrator” privileges and gives you the power to run specially developed programs that take advantage of these additional rights. An example would be a program called titanium backup which coupled with the “super user” privileges can perform backup duties not available in “non-root” environments. The following file was obtained and discussed here: Link
a. Download the file Root_Xoom.zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=579548&d=1303896724
b. Connect your XOOM to the PC (again be sure Debug mode is enabled) and close any AutoPlay dialog boxes that pop up.
c. In the same command window used previously type: adb reboot recovery
d. Now, using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons on the XOOM to move the prompt and the power button to execute a selection: i. Go to "mounts and storage"
ii. Select "mount USB storage"
iii. Your SD Card will now be mounted on your computer. Copy the “Root_Xoom.zip” file you downloaded above onto the SD Card.
iv. Go Back" TWICE then go into "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard"
v. Navigate to the “Root_Xoom.zip” file and select it.
vi. Navigate to “Yes – Root_Xoom.zip” and select it. It will now flash and you will see some scrolling text and a progress indicator.
vii. Wait until it says “Install from sdcard complete.
viii. Back out to main menu and reboot.e. After the XOOM re-boots check to see that you have a new App in the Drawer called “Superuser”.G) CLEANUP
As you become more at ease with using Clockwork Recovery you will use it more and more. There are many more features than can be described here and after all, that is beyond the scope of this tutorial. I highly recommend that you seek out more information about this tool so you can put it to good use. One term you will see used a lot is “wiping”. Wiping does exactly that to a specific partition(s) and/or file(s) thereby insuring that a new installation is “clean” and no “remnants” of prior information exist. The upside to this “cleaning” is that there is less chance of corruption from using older (or incompatible) versions of files or data and the downside is that this “data” may contain useful information such as high scores, completed game levels or even previously remembered passwords. You should learn how to back-up this data using Titanium Backup or another backup application and manually reload it after your upgrade is considered “stable”. This allows you to wipe and thereby insure that any “issues” you experience are not related to “remnants”. So, with this all said, I recommend that you now Wipe your User Data and Cache. Again, if you have not backed up, this will erase and reset things that you may not want erased or reset. Proceed with caution!!!!
a. Enter Recovery via quickboot or adb as described above.
b. Using the Volume and Power Buttons as described above navigate to “wipe data/factory reset” and select it.
c. Navigate to “Yes – delete all user data” and select it. Wait until it says “Data wipe complete”.
d. Navigate to “wipe cache partition” and select it.
e. Navigate to “Yes – Wipe Cache” and select it. Wait until it says “Cache wipe complete”.
f. Navigate to “reboot system now” and select it.
g. Set up your rooted, custom recovery, custom Kernel XOOM!! ENJOY
I really appreciate your post. This should be sticky
P/s: you can make this instruction even better if you include some pics that can illustrate the process, some frequently errors and solutions to fix those errors.
Thanks for the kind words!
One step at a time my friend. This was my first attempt at creating a tutorial and I tried to handle the "pictures" with very detailed wording. Embedding screenies into future efforts is on my to do list.
The bottom line regarding this is..... I created the tutorial before I even took my XOOM out of the box and then followed it to see if it worked. While I had some minor issues with the original draft, I believe they have all been taken care of in this final.
I expect that if any issues are encountered, it will involve the SD Card size which seemed to be a common issue for some. I had NO problems with mine.
And, while I'm at it....... I was a little hesitant to include the information on "quick boot". Some members (and I'm taking this off the top of my head right now) had issues using clockwork when it wasn't initiated using the adb reboot recovery command. I seem to recall that there was a difference in this regard between the WiFi and 3G versions. In any case if Clockwork does not seem to be working for you then stick with starting up recovery using adb and NOT Quick Boot. Having Quick Boot available in your app drawer is recommended however in case you ever experience issues mounting the device to your PC.

This is exceptionally well done. A tremendous resource. I hope you will keep it up to date. I will refer to it often. Thank you!
I hope this works.....With this it is time to root. Thank you for a great step by step instructions.
This is an excellent tutorial! Thank you. I may take the plunge now. One request : would you be so kind as to add the steps to return to stock and relock the wifi version?
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
See this tread: Stock Image
I have NOT done this procedure but will follow that thread to see how it turns out.
Someone DID apparently re-lock the device but I don't know if that procedure removes all indications that the device was un-locked in the first place.

Didn't really want to bump my own thread but I was hoping someone would have tried this by now. Anybody?
I didn't put this "guide" in the development section because I didn't actually develop anything. Perhaps I should have?
This is an awesome step by step instruction! Good Work! Thanks a lot!

Ran through it yesterday on my father in law's new Xoom, worked great!!!
I was holding out for HTC flyer with pen, or Transformer with keyboard...
But, was impressed and may be going with Xoom now myself.
Thanks so much for the guide, it worked very well and he's happily tethered to adhoc wifi on his droid now, so very thankful as well.

Thanks BRD for everything you do. I added links to the 5/1 files but also a disclaimer. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Feedback
Land Master, I just used your tutorial to root my wifi Xoom. It is very well written and easy to understand and follow. I installed the Tiamat 1.4.1 kernel. Worked fine. Have confirmed that I have Superuser permissions. And "about" shows the Tiamat 1.4.1 kernel.
First a suggestion: Under "Install Custom Kernel" your instruction states "c. Enter Recovery via “Quick Boot” application or thru adb". I tried to use Quick Boot but could not (obviously) because I was not rooted yet. Had to use ADB, which worked fine. You may want to modify the instructions here to remove the Quick Boot option at this point?
Second, I have a request for help. I purchased a Sandisk 16gb micro SD card. Formatted it in my rooted Droid Incredible. Placed it in my Xoom and rebooted. I can not find my external SD Card with Root Explorer. Any suggestions?

Cam30era.....Thanks for your help. Honestly I haven't played with the SD Card in mine but do know that I have an "external" directory that is viewable in Root Explorer under "sdcard". With this said you should check the Tiamat thread because I believe the SD card "stuff" was removed in 1.4.1 because it was sketchy. I personally am still on 1.4.0.
I don't really want to take people away from the "official" (Tiamat) thread because they will all need to "learn" the same way most of us have.... by trial and error. It is my belief that this is what makes all of this fun and worthwhile. With that said however, it is my belief that a "Stable" SD Card fix will not become available until after the official Moto update drops.
My goal here was to get people to a "starting point" thus allowing them to get their feet wet and subsequently give them the tools (Root, Recovery, ETC) to continue the journey into flashing different stuff. This is why I wrote the disclaimer above.... Hoping that people would just stick to what is "known good" and march onward by researching other threads and learning as they go.

I'll try flashing 1.4.0 and then back to 1.4.1 and let you know. Thanks for the suggestions.
OK. I just tried to flash 1.4.0 from CWM. Got following error message:
E:Error in /sdcard/tiamat_xoom-v1.4.0.zip
(status 0)
Installation aborted.
I'm getting help now on the Tiamat thread. I'll keep you posted on how this gets resolved.
Land Master, FYI: I successfully flashed 1.4.0. This did create a fully functional external folder inside sdcard. I then flashed 1.4.1 and it's a go. So you may want to modify your tutorial to indicate that you must flash 1.4.0 first.
A big "thank you" for this excellent tutorial, and for your help. I probably would not have rooted my Xoom without this outstanding aid.

Ad-hoc? A stock xoom doesn't support this but a rooted one can now? Didn't realize that had been enabled.
hi,
can i install the kernel and the custom recovery without root ?
i thought i need to have root first....

[NEW ROOTING METHOD] Trekstor Surftab Ventos 8, 9.7 and Breeze 7

Instructions for the Surftab Breeze 7:
In this case it's really easy to get the tab rooted. It already has the su binary installed Get SuperSU from market and let it do the rest.
Instructions for the Surftab Ventos 8:
Big news!
I made it to make another rooting method without the use of any 3rd party software!
It's also not important which OS you are using.
Pre-requisites:
Get a Micro SD card! (up to 8GB as it seems that more than 8GB cannot be used to activate CWM)
Instructions:
1. Get my custom clockworkmod recovery zip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995984
2. Unpack the zip file on the root of your micro SD card (there has to be a file named uImage_recovery now)
3. Download the attached signed_SU.zip file and put it either on your internal or external SD (do NOT unpack it)
4. Shutdown your Tab
5. Keep Volume- pressed and tap the power button (while still keeping the Volume- pressed) until you see the clockworkmod menu
6. Choose "install zip from sdcard"
7. Depending on the fact where you have the zip stored, select either the internal or external card
8. Select the zip and confirm its installation with "Yes"
9. After the script finished, hit reboot and check if you have SuperSU installed
This should be it
To do:
I'll make a new thread helping in installing the Playstore without having to root our ventos tablets.
After the tablet rebooted twice you should see SuperSU now as installed application. Now you just need a working play store apk and move it into the system partition (don't forget chmod to 644) to get the Play store running.
Instructions for the Surftab Ventos 9.7:
As I don't have anyone with a rooted 9.7 at the moment (to get a dump of the stock recovery), I can't make a working CWM to get the below signed_SU.zip flashed, sorry! Only the old rooting method listed below only works at the moment (if moborobo is in a good mood )...
As usual I don't take any responsibility for bricked devices (but I assume that the chances of bricking are nearly impossible)
If you have any questions, let me know!
Old Rooting method:
Code:
Hi,
I know, many of you don't know these tables at all. But as far as I know, these are only available in Germany at the moment.
Anyways, I think it is helpful for my German colleagues to know how to root these tablets as they don't need to search for hours and hours until finding a solution that is suitable (as I did :-/ ).
The Windows way:
Pre-requisites:
0. A Windows PC
1. Download Moborobo ([URL]http://www.moborobo.com/download/[/URL])
2. Install any Updates Moborobo needs to install
3. Download the latest release of bin4ry's universal rooting for most ICS and JB phones/tablets ([URL]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460[/URL])
Thanks to bin4ry by the way :)
4. Download my modded Runme.bat
Instructions:
1. Unpack the 7z Archive from point 3 into Moborobo's installation folder. The result should be that you have a new folder "stuff" and a runme.bat and runme.sh in the Moborobo folder
2. IMPORTANT: Unpack my modded runme.bat into the MoboRobo folder and delete the original batch file
3. Start Moborobo and ignore any exceptions which are thrown out (at least my Visual Studio nagged me all the time, and no, I wasn't willing to debug the application :p )
4. Connect the Tablet to the PC and wait until Moborobo says that it is connected
5. Then start the modded Runme.bat and follow the instructions (select the first option by the way, which says "Normal")
6. Watch the screen, you need to click on Restore on your tablet (without any passwords)
7. See the magic happen
The Linux way:
Here is the feedback of an owner of a Trekstor Ventos 9.7:
[QUOTE]
Hi,
[...]
I am using Linux (old Fedora 15), I used Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v15.zip without any modifications to root the device. I ran the unix shell script that is provided in the package and selected option 1 for rooting, just as you suggested. I did not really understand why you needed the mobo tool, Bin4ry's script seems to work out of the box.
After that I installed SuperUser with latest busybox, terminal app and a console version of openssh, all that also works just fine.
I did not try Google Play or any other market, I use the device without a Google account, so I actually removed the preinstalled AndroidPit market and got rid of everything that wanted to collect my personal data.
I hope some day I can post in the thread but right now I do not see anything else where I could participate to gather those annoying 10 posts.
Again, thanks for your initial walkthrough, it gave me the hints I needed.
Kind regards,
Jin

DOES the Play Store work on your device???
All other sources on the net say that the Play Store is not possible on the device...
Gesendet von meinem Nexus 7 mit Tapatalk 2
Yes,it works. but only if you root your tablet. Also it's important to move the playstore.apk into the system partition...DON'T INSTALL IT like a normal apk...
Then reboot and you're done..if you need help pm me..
Can confirm that this method is also working with the 7" Breeze. Moborobo was not able to recognize the device, but manual install of a ADB driver for the Breeze showing as non-working "Android" in the system settings device table enabled it to see it. From there rooting was indeed a "breeze" Play Store and USB devices on host working fine. Great job, thanks for sharing!

Oh this sounds good...I was searching for a method to manually install the adb driver for our tablets...can you share how you did this? it sucks having moborobo always running for a little adb work...
I had ADB installed previously with the latest Android SDK as fastboot was acting up on my Win 8-64bit. So the devices manager in settings was already showing a not properly installed Android USB device. I changed the USB connection on the Breeze to "MTP" , and in the computer device list chose to update the driver for this USB device manually - and then chose to search computer for drivers. Under Android USB devices I chose Android ADB Interace (Google ADB driver 7.0.0.1 previously installed with the SDK) - and was able to see the device as ST70104-1413fc082 with "adb devices" from the computer. Its funny, we both speak German, trying to explain in English... . Hope it helps.
Yes,indeed funny
Thank you for your explanations..if i get adb to work too i will update my guide
Thanks again
Edit: doesn't work unfortunately but i heard that on Linux it isn't a problem to get adb running properly...
didnt work for me
hi
I just saw this post and tries doing s instructed but:
1-couldnt get into recovery mode ! I tried the volume down button but it would boot the tab into safe mode
2-tried volume up button but it goes to a black download mode screen and restarts.
3-tried the other method through Moborobo but that didnt work either , it tells me it succeeded but there is no root.
by the way I have the 8" on Jellybean
I just want a way to make more space or install aps on my SD card
Has anyone successfully rooted a Trekstore Surftab Ventos 7.0 HD with some of the above mentioned methods? I've tried both bit without success....
The reason for me wanting to root is to get Tasker running on it. It depends on some google maps framework. The 7.0 HD has playstore and maps but i suppose something is missing and I have to root to get the missing files.
If anyone has some advice I'll be very glad. Cheers

Is there a difference between the ventos 7 and the ventos 7 breeze? And are there any KitKat ROMs available?

Lenovo A60+ ROOTED stock rom (Philippines). WORKING contact identification.

Lenovo A60+ ROOTED stock rom (Philippines). WORKING contact identification either international format or local format.
this one works without any problems for PH Lenovo A60+ specially have tried ALL stock roms(chinese) and cooked/custom roms has problem with caller i.d. or number identification from international format (+63xxxxxxxxxx) to local format (0xxxxxxxxxx) in your contacts or phonebook. see instructions below to root your Lenovo A60+ without having issues/problems with caller/contact identification:
in ALL stock ROM and custom roms i have tried, ALL these have ISSUES or PROBLEMS with caller/contact identification. lets say:
a. your contact stored number is 0919xxxxxxx
b. 0919xxxxxxx calls you, the contact identification will show.
c. 0919xxxxxxx send you an sms/text. the contact will NOT show because the SMS sender is +63919xxxxxxx
twist:
a. your contact stored number is +63919xxxxxxx
b. 0919xxxxxxx calls you, the contact identification will NOT show. because the caller incoming number is 0919xxxxxxx and your phone number in contacts is 63919xxxxxxx. this two numbers is treated as two different numbers.
c. 0919xxxxxxx send you an sms/text. the contact will show because the SMS sender is +63919xxxxxxx
basically in the Philippines number formats sent by networks are:
receiving calls: 0919xxxxxxx or international format
receiving SMS/text: +63919xxxxxxx or local format
as said i have tried ALL(as of date january 14, 2012) stock roms and custom roms available in the internet for rooting this Lenovo A60+. have spent DAYS figuring out and trying out(kaskus, xda-dev, symbianized, etc). dont look any further and waste time like what i did. this procedure is for you to save yourself days and time lost!

DISCLAIMER: i am not responsible for any lost of data, your phone bricked or loss of your phones warranty. remember that ROOTING an android device VOIDS manufacturers WARRANTY. I DO not HOST any of these files.
BEFORE rooting, do this necessary steps:
1. backup your phone's IMEI. this is likely to be erased/lost in ROOTING or installing new roms. thus you wil get an "Invalid IMEI" message or your sim cannot locate networks or has no signal. check google play for IMEI backup apps and backup into your SD card. otherwise read the tutorial after on how to re-create your IMEI file and restore into your phone system.
2. BACKUP your contacts and messages/sms, applications etc. most likely all data will be lost too. so you need to restore it after ROOTING procedure.
3. DISABLE and turn off any anti-virus softwares in your PC and any PC to Phone applications such as IdeaTool, MobileGO, Snap Pea, Etc. so that this will NOT interfere with the rooting procedure.

TUTORIAL PROPER in rooting your Lenovo A60+ ROOTED stock room version with SU(superuser apk and binary), the EASY and beginner/newbie way:
Download these files and tool:
1. Philippine STOCK Lenovo A60+ ROM version A60+_ROW_S310_120823 ROOTED with SU or superuser: mediafire.com/?n1i35c3neu6ud3d - Size 125.45 MB - DO NOT unzip this.
2. Mobileuncle apk and Recovery Image: mediafire.com/?bo12ktkrrn57314 - Size 5.29 MB - unrar this to get a.) mobileuncle.apk b.) recovery.img
3. Windows Driver: mediafire.com/?31nddwqdot5ajp2 - Size 10.89 KB - UNZIP this. this is for your PC to read your phone via flashtool (so link number 4 will be able to communicate PC to Phone/Device).
4. Flash Tool: dropbox.com/s/f7gfyqtwyn5qkpa/ISO-8859-1__Flash tool.rar - Size 3.60 MV - unrar/unzip this to get "Flash tool" folder.
5. Firmware Upgrade: mediafire.com/?ehiyzbdmlauo7i7 - Size 166.59 MB - unrar/unzip this to get the folder "Boot". this is a chinese custom rom firmware build number A60+_S312_120630 with SU(superuser) and mobileuncle tools 2.3.6 pre installed and a lot of pre installed bloatwares. dont worry will be removing this and installing an english language rooted rom anyways.
Follow these step by step, with SIM cards REMOVED from the phone/device:
Step 1: Prepare needed files and copy to SD Card the three files:
a.) a60+ori.zip (link number 1) should be zipped file so DONT unzip this.
b.) mobileuncle.apk (unzipped from link number 2)
c.) recovery.img (unzipped from link number 2)
into the root/top folder of your SD card. see screenshot here: http://screencast.com/t/AvBLMyth
Step 2: INSTALLING the PC drivers - Turn off the phone, take the battery out, connect your phone to the pc(while battery is not inserted) via usb cable. your pc will detect your device and will try to search and install drivers. MANUALLY install(manually select the drivers pointing to the drivers folder on your pc) the drivers in the unzipped folder "MT6575 USB VCOM drivers" (link number 3) appropriate for your windows version(xp/vista/7).
Step 3: ROOTING with Flashtool - unplug usb cable from your phone, insert the battery (do not turn on the phone/device yet).
Run Flash Tool(Flash_tool.exe in the unzipped folder of link number 4). screenshot here: http://screencast.com/t/BLOR3S0Nn1
while in flash tool window:
a.) Click scatter-loading at the upper right corner of the flashtool window.
b.) browse to "Boot" folder which was extracted/unzipped in link number 5.
c.) select MT6575_Android_scatter.txt file and click open. see screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/6TaKi73J
d.)
d.1. Tick/Select all 9 options.
d.2. Click "Firmware -> Upgrade" button at the top.
See screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/OIKfwN0s
d.3. Flashtool will now be SEARCHING or WAITING for your device to be connected and ready to flash/write the files you selected in step d.1. see screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/1H3By7t3wsll
Step 4: while your phone is TURNED OFF, NO SIMS, NO SD card,.. and it has its battery on it; on your phone/device HOLD(press and dont release) "volume +" or "volume up" key(top-right side of your phone) and plug the cable until the progress bar at the bottom is running, when the progress bar turns RED, you can RELEASE the "Volume up/+" key. see screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/wDPM9Ym8AHG
Wait around 5 minutes. the progress bar at the bottom will show as RED then YELLOW, then TEAL. wait until a green circle in a pop up window appears. when the green circle appears; this mean success in flashing with the rom upgrade. see screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/OGLHkf55
Step 5: Close Flashtool application in your PC. unplug the phone/device USB cable. turn on the device you would notice the default language is Chinese. to change language, go to settings(purple icon with gear), scroll down to languages(violet icon with letter A). select first option at the top. tap English.
Step 6. INSTALLING MOBILEUNCLE CWM RECOVERY - Turn off your phone/device and insert your sim cards and your SD Card(the SD card you copied the 3 files in Step 1). turn it back on. on "New Sim Detected" pop up window. just close it.
6.a. turn OFF "GPS" and "Data conn." at the top(swipe the top area going down).
6.b. open the application "FileBrowser" which is pre installed in the firmware. browse to your SD card's root and install mobileuncle.apk that you copied in step 1(this is version 2011.01.04v1.2). a pop up window will show "Install blocked". tap "Settings" tap or check "Unknown sources". Tap "OK" on the "Attention" window. tap on back. tap again on mobileuncle.apk tap install. tap open. tap get started. tap OK in the chinese pop-up window.
6.c. tap on "Flash Recovery From SdCard" (its the second option from the top). tap on "recovery.img" then tap "OK". Superuser will pop up and quick tap OK to grant superuser permission.
6.d. the phone will reboot and enter CWM-based Recovery v6.0.0.3(english version, CWM stands for ClockWorkMod).
Step 7. INSTALLING THE STOCK ROM WITH ROOT USING CWM - IN CASE that the phone/device did not enter CWM recovery but booted as regular boot. turn the phone off. turn it back ON while you HOLD on the "Volume +/up" button. this will enter to CWM-based Recovery. otherwise proceed with steps below:
7.a. while in the CWM-based Recovery console, Lenovo A60+ touchscreen doesnt work. the hardware volume up and down works as buttons to scroll up and down. while the power button works as the SELECT button.
7.b. scroll down twice(press volume down button twice) to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" option. press power button to select it. scroll down and highlight "Yes -- delete all user data". press power buttn to select. wait for around 20 seconds to complete.
7.c. scroll down to "wipe cache partition" and press power button. scroll down to "Yes - Wipe Cache". wait 2 seconds to complete.
7.d. scroll down to "install zip from sdcard" and press power button. press again power button to select "choose zip from sdcard".
7.e. scroll down to locate and highlight "a60+ori.zip". press power button. confirm the install by scrolling down and select "Yes - Install a60+ori.zip". wait for around 1 minute for the process to complete. the process completes with the console last text "Install from sdcard complete." shows at the bottom while you will be able to choose from the options at the top again.
7.f. scroll down and select +++++Go Back+++++ then select "reboot system now".
Step 8: FIX on INVALID IMEI AFTER SUCCESSFUL ROOTING - by now you have a ROOTED A60+_ROW_S310_120823 ROM. all apps are working EXCEPT that your phone has "Invalid IMEI". this is because Device IMEI's are UNIQUE to each phone. now, lets fix this!!!
files and tools to download:
8.1. download t-kstore.com/imei.zip - Size 4.22 MB - its a dos based IMEI generator and encryptor and write to file.
8.2. download download.estrongs.com/app-es-file-explorer.html - Size 2.81 MB - an apk "es_file_explorer_v1.6.2.4.apk" and application to manage files in your android device. copy the es_file_explorer_v1.6.2.4.apk file to your SD card's root/top folder.
8.3. RE-CREATING your phone/device IMEI - locate your Unique Lenovo A60+ IMEI. there are two places these 15 digit number can be located. FIRST is when you open your phone, its in the sticker attached to your phone under the battery. on Philippine released phones its in between the stickers of Lenovo and NTC stickers. SECOND location is the sticker on the side of your phone's Lenovo box/carton/package.
8.4. extract/unzip imei.zip that you downloaded in 8.1.
8.5. go to the extracted folder and run "dos.cmd". this will run a DOS console window in your pc.
8.6. in the dos command line type:
imei.exe 123456789012345 123456789012345
then press enter to execute the command line.
whereas, the first set of numbers is your IMEI #1 and second set is your IMEI #2 as you located in Step 8.3.
after pressing enter this will generate your encrypted IMEI file with the name "MP0B_001_NEW". see screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/lUUzC3yiTNn
8.7. close the dos console window. rename that file generated "MP0B_001_NEW" to "MP0B_001" (without the qoutes) in the folder where you extracted imei.zip
8.8. copy MP0B_001 to your phone's sd card. for this tutorial just copy it to your sd card's root folder.
8.9. INSTALLING ES Explorer, moving the IMEI file to the phone's correct system folder - install and run es_file_explorer_v1.6.2.4.apk which you previously downloaded and copied to your SD card in step 8.2.
8.10. open ES File explorer on your phone. first window on first run just click okay. tap on the bottom left button of your A60+. tap "Settings". tap "File Settings" select or check "Show Hidden Files". tap back. scroll down and tap "Root Settings". tap or check "Root Explorer". SU pop up will show and grant root or tap yes to give privilege to ES File Explorer. tap or check "Up to Root" and "Mount File System". tap back twice.
8.11. on your sdcard's root/top folder locate the file MP0B_001 which you copied in your sd card in step 8.8.
long press on the icon then tap "Copy". a little pull up window will show at the bottom(which is the clipboard of es file explorer).
8.12. tap the "favorites" icon at the top-right corner. tap the device icon or the one with "/" which is to the right of the HOME or house icon. this will bring you to the root folder of your device. navigate(navigate by tapping the folders) to: /data/nvram/md/NVRAM/NVD_IMEI/
you will see 3 files. long press on the MP0B_001 then select "Delete". yes DELETE you wont be using this anyways. tap okay when youre asked to confirm deletion. at the bottom, swipe up the es file explorer's clipboard. tap on MP0B_001 icon which is in the clipboard. a message will show something like "MP0B_001 successfully copied...". exit es file explorer. RESTART your A60+.
EUREKA!!! you strike gold! you now have a ROOTED A60+ with working caller/sms identification.
Step 9: restore your backups, apps, sms, contacts, settings.

Im copying the flashtool link but it gives me this bandwidth error, because Ill just be needing the root access. android market wont download apps i need to replace it.
nag eenglish lng ako pra mka benefit din yung mga forangers. hihihihi
Could you also help us how to swap sd card with internal storage? so that apps could directly install in the external sd card.
Link2SD
thanks for the tut bro!!!
to increase internal storage of A60+
we need to install Link2SD
Using Minitool Partition wizard
we need to create 2 partition in our SD card
first partition must be set to Primary & Fat32
second partition must be set to Primary & ext4 (A60+ doesn't recognized fat, fat32, ext2, & Ext3 in second partition)
please note that the second partition even we sized it as 2gb when we open the link2SD storage info
the second partition display it as 1Gb only, but worry not it will still going to use the other space yuo have created
mine, was set to 2gb and have transferred 153MB of files to the second partition
and it is still showing 100% free and used: 153MB
@guilliam perhaps you can add this to your tut.
Thanks again..God Bless!
thanks for this i have rooted my lenovo a60+ hehe, there's one problem i've encountered when i go to setting and click on the about phone the settings becomes force close, is it happened to you? well i had follow the instructions though.. anyway thanks for this TUT hehe hope there will be rom for our lenovo a660+ which had no bugs at all hehe
Guidance needed!
Hello Guiliam
Thanks for such a detailed post. I am quite new to this, and just have some basic understanding on the rooting/flashing etc. I am planning to root my Lenovo A60+ which I have bought in China, which has unnecessary bloatware and more importantly there is no Google Play app in that. I am based in India, and would want to know if your ROM will work for me as well?
Is your post only covering Rooting part or does it also cover any flashing part (custom ROM), the reason I ask is because apart from rooting, I also want to install the ROM which is in English (or can the language be changed automatically?)
I am looking to root my "Lenovo A60+" - primarily for reasons like:
1. I do not have stock Google Play Store app, and I am not sure how to download that app.
2. I have bought this phone in China, and there is lot of unwanted Chinese software which I want to get rid of.
3. I want to get rid of the Chinese keyboard (iFlytek) and only have Android keyboard.
I have questions like:
1. If my rooting fails for some reason, can I un-root the device to restore it to the previous state (i.e. with all the stock apps)
2. I want to avoid bricking my phone, even if it happens, will I be able to go back to the previous state by un-rooting?
Some details of my phone:
Model - Lenovo A60+
Android version - 2.3.6
Build number - A60+_S318_121108
Baseband version - MAUI.11AMD.W11.50.SP.V13.P10,2012/07/13 13:26
"Step 2: INSTALLING the PC drivers - Turn off the phone, take the battery out, connect your phone to the pc(while battery is not inserted) via usb cable. your pc will detect your device and will try to search and install drivers. You'll need to cancel Windows looking for the drivers. Of course, the installation will fail.
Then go to Device Manager and look for the device with the "!". Right-click on that device, choose Update Driver then locate the drivers that you downloaded.

Question, I need help!
Hi, thanks for the great tutorial, I have successfully rooted my Lenovo a60+! My question is, can I install custom ROMS on my freshly rooted phone? Popular ROMS like Cyanogenmod or Paranoid Android require phone compatibility, and my phone is not on their list. I'm starting to feel sick after I have rooted my phone because I have no idea yet how to install custom roms (which was my main reason of rooting), will you be nice to me by answering these questions?
- Does custom ROMS do require phone compatibility?
- Are all or some custom ROMS compatible to all android phones as long as they are rooted?
- If so, do you have a list of ROMS that are compatible to my Lenovo a60+?
- Lastly, please tell me that there is a way to upgrade the phone's OS from gingerbread to jelly bean or even ice cream sandwich.
Please help me! I have an empty rooted Lenovo a60+ and I need a custom ROM to be installed before I put my data back again. Thanks in advance, and also for the root tutorial. ))
Please! Anyone! Heeeellpp!!!
My Phone is Bricked!
It stays in the Lenovo screen and will not eventually boot up.
I have installed Chainfire 3D from the market and was surprised that it did not have the options that I was expecting from the tutorial, so I read the description on the application, it says, ''Driver not installed, you need to install driver before you can access options''. So i installed the drivers, then everything was ok, I can still use my phone, but Chainfire 3d still needs me to update the drivers, so I did, then, suddenly, my phone's screen just froze, and I cannot access my notifications, home back menu keys, power button, in fact my screen does not work anymore. Feeling nervous, I left it untouched for an hour and checked it back its still the same the moment i left it. So I took the battery out, tried to turn it on again, and now, I'm stuck with the Lenovo screen and will not boot up to stock ROM, please Help me! I need my phone as soon as it is fixed! Please HELP!!!
Here are the details of my rooted Lenovo A60+:
- Followed the rooting process here, so I have Clockwork recovery mod 6
- Has a installed Chainfire 3d 1.7
- Installed stock ROM
- Has no backups
- Can access the recovery mode
- Already done the ''wipe data'' ''wipe cache'' ''factory reset'' and everything, wiped my phone clean.
Please help me, my parents are going to kill me if I can't fix my phone.
Thanks for the post. When I tried I got an error "S_PART_NO_VALID_TABLE (1037)" after the status bar showed 100% in red colour. Need help please. Thank you.
Thank you for the post but it cannot work
Error S_PART_NO_VALID_TABLE (1037), and the status bar stays 100% red color. Anyway, thanks

[Q] Re: THE ULTIMATE NEWB GUIDE. I'm too noob for to noob guide, help.

. I don't even want a custom ROM. I just want to be rooted and run stock with rooted google play store apps. Am I there?
I just want to run rooted apps with no ROM flashing...oh god why...where is the guide to root and only root?
You'd think this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1652398 would be where to go to do that, but evidently it's sending me down the road to custom ROM flashing. AGHGHGhjkdashbdas. Do not want.
Ok, so here's where I am, I have finished step 8:
1. Download Odin 1.85 .
2. Download(USE FIREFOX!) ClockworkMod TOUCH 5.5.0.4 OR TWRP 2.2.2.0, they are both named "recovery.tar.md5" and will be downloaded as "recovery.tar.md5", DO NOT CHANGE the filename or else it wont install.
3. Extract the contents of odin-185.zip to a folder.
4. Run Odin 1.85.exe from the folder you extracted it to.
5. Prepare Odin: Check "auto-reboot" and UNCHECK ALL OTHER OPTIONS. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
6. Only Click "PDA" and select the recovery.tar.md5 file you downloaded. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
7. How To Put your device into Download Mode: DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON FOR THIS PROCEDURE. - download mode is NOT the same as recovery mode
a. Connect the USB cable to your PC, but NOT to your phone.
b. Remove the battery.
c. Reinsert the battery.
d. ATT PHONES - Press and keep down both Volume Up and Volume Down keys simultaneously.
ROGERS PHONES - Press and keep down only the Volume Down key.
DO NOT RELEASE THE VOLUME KEY(S) UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN STEP (f)
e. Insert the USB cable into your device. The phone will turn itself on when usb cable is inserted - DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON.
f. You will now see a screen w/a yellow triangle warning you about installing a rom . Now release the volume key(s) - SEE PHONE PICS BELOW
g. Press and release the "Volume Up" key to enter into download mode - SEE PHONE PICS BELOW
h. You should now be at the Download Mode screen w/odin recognizing your phone. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
8. Click Start in Odin. It will flash the new recovery and will reboot the phone when completed. Your device will autoreboot into android. You are done using ODIN.
9. UPDATING CWM OR TWRP:
Now you need to udate CWM, download and copy cwm6027touch_v14.4.6_skyrocket.zip file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and choose "INSTALL FROM SDCARD" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
sk8erwitskil's CWM thread is here HERE , check to see if above file is the latest or dl the "Flashable zip" CWM file from there.
If upgrading TWRP go here HERE and follow the dev's instructions on using goo app, or you can use the flashable TWRP 2.4.1.0 file HERE and copy that file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and pick "INSTALL" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
How to enter recovery read section #2 below.
How to use cwm read THIS, also read Q&A on recoveries
You can upgrade to either CWM OR TWRP from which ever recovery TAR file you used in ODIN in step #2 from above.
10. You're done newbie and soon to be a power user, read and educate yourself as much as you can before flashing, happy flashing.

OK so here's the list of instructions I'm using to root my Skyrocket:
I have completed everything through step 4. I completely do not understand what to do after that. So, like I'm a 40 year old soccer mom, can you explain what I'm supposed to do to fulfill step 5? Is it through the odin app on my pc? Is this completed on my phone? The link provided that ostensibly explains to noobs how to do this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970) doesn't adequately explain to me what I'm doing and where.
Help, please!

Assuming that you have successfully installed your custom recovery you then need to know which recovery you installed before you update it. If you used CWM you can get the updated version from the Skyrocket development thread. Put the updated CWM file on your SD card and flash that zip while in recovery. If you used TWRP you can update it through the app that it installed if it did install one. GooManager (someone correct me if I am wrong on the name) I think GooManager needs suoeruser privileges. So which recovery did you flash?

It's CWM. How do I
A. Put the updated CWM file on my SD card and
B. Flash that zip while in recovery? Is that through Odin, or what?
Thanks

i think you should stay on stock, read more b4 you brick your phone, no sense in rooting/installing custom roms when you dont know how to install a file on your scard, im not putting you down but trying to give you friendly advice
Vincom has a point. I taught myself through these forums and Google how to do it back in October of 2011. I flashed many a ROM and many files since then until I bricked mine Thursday. Now I have to pay 60 dollars to get it fixed. But on the upside I now have a Note II to play with.
Edit: She is asking for help though and she did ask in the right thread. Some people need more help than others.

Oh. ****. I don't even want a custom ROM. I just want to be rooted and run stock with rooted google play store apps. Am I there?
I just want to run rooted apps with no ROM flashing...oh god why...where is the guide to root and only root?
You'd think this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398 would be where to go to do that, but evidently it's sending me down the road to custom ROM flashing.

I don't know how to do step 9. Do I even need it? I have no desire to run a custom ROM.
For just rooting u have to run the superuser zip through your recovery
Oh and if you are not understanding what the stickies are saying to do then look it up on youtube because there are a lot of step by step instructions there.

a. put updated file in your micro sd card.... plug ur micro sd card to pc... drag file and drop it in your micro sd card. put the micro sd card back in phone.
b. to go to recovery press power button + vol+ + vol- all at once and hold.
why do u need to unlock play store app? playstore is accessible completely even without root. you can also sideload Amazon appstore and other apps without root. no need to get all bricked up just to run playstore. i'm confused what are you trying to do again?

im guessing he wants to run apps from play that require root, eg titanuim backup, but he doesnt know how to put a file on his sdcard, but then he has to learn how to install zips from recovery which someones got to teach him since he doesnt want to read/learn/search for the answers. he seems to be impatient and wants it done "now", its a brick waiting to happen, my advice to him was to slowdown and learn

agree and such bad attituted too. i wouldn't want to help anybody who cusses in every conversation geez little respect goes a long way
It you just want to root and not want to flash any custom ROMs or anything related to it,I will tell you how to from total beginning
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST , BACKUP EVERYTHING
In order to root Android 4.2 the following three requirements must be satisfied beforehand:
The Android SDK, which you can download from Google Developers
A custom recovery like ClockworkMod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
SuperSU, which you can download from CF-Root
There are no major differences between the two, but TWRP is more touch-oriented thanks to larger buttons. CWM is also available in a touch-compatible variant, but it has much smaller buttons. It's a matter of personal preference between the two though, but you have to choose one.
Before starting the process I urge you to perform a backup, as all data might be lost afterwards. You can copy the contents of the SD card to a safe external location such as cloud storage service or computer hard drive.
The first step that needs to be performed after all the files are downloaded is to install the Android SDK. Afterwards open the Android SDK Manager and select the following two items:
Android SDK Platform-tools -- it contains the required programs to install Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Google USB Driver -- it contains the necessary drivers for the Nexus device
Then you should create a folder in an easily accessible location within the command line. In this example I will use a folder named "Root" in my C:\ drive in Windows. The path name will therefore be: "C:\Root".
From the folder where Android SDK Platform-tools is installed (in my case it is "C:\Program Files x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools" copy the following files to the previously created "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
The following files must also be copied to the "Root" folder:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery that you previously downloaded for your specific device (please see below)
For my 8 GB nexus 7 wifi(codename "grouper" I will use TWRP with the name "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img".
You can easily find the codename for your devoice by looking into Google
The custom recovery file differs for each device, please make sure you download the correct file
In order to make the process smoother for instance the SuperSU file can be renamed to "root.zip" and the custom recovery to "customrecovery.zip". It's a matter of convenience, but for accuracy I will stick to the original naming for this guide.
If the previous steps are completed you must have the following six files in your "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery. In my case it is "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img"
From there, you can proceed to install the drivers for "fastboot mode". To install them, follow these steps:
Power off your Nexus device.
Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down then press and hold the Power button; the device will now enter "fastboot mode".
Go to Device Manager (Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager in Windows 7/8) and identify the device; for me it shows up as Android 1.0.
Right click Android 1.0 and select "Update Driver Software," then select "Browse my computer for driver software".
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then click "Next".
From "Have Disk..." option go to the folder where you have Google USB Driver installed (for me it's "C:\Program Files .(x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver" and select "android_winusb.inf".
Out of the three options select "Android ADB Interface" and validate any future warning window to install the driver.
Final preparations
Everything is prepared in order to start the installation process, but in order to do so a command window must be opened. Windows Key + R opens "Run"; type in "cmd" and the command window appears. Typing "cd C:\Root" and pressing Enter sets the "Root" folder as the working directory. Pressing the Shift key and right clicking inside the "Root" folder will also deliver the same result.
The device must be turned on in "fastboot mode" which I have explained at step no.2 during the driver installation process, and obviously plugged-in to the computer. You then have to type in the following commands while in "fastboot mode":
fastboot devices -- this is just for verification purposes; if there is no listed device then the drivers have been improperly installed and steps 1 through 7 must be redone.
fastboot oem unlock -> you have to accept the prompt in order to continue -- this command will unlock the bootloader, but it will also erase the data on the device which is why a backup is necessary.
fastboot reboot-bootloader -- this will reboot the bootloader.
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img -- this will flash the custom recovery --please use the specific file and name for your particular Nexus device!
fastboot erase cache -- this will erase the cache -- might not be necessary but it's just as a precaution.
fastboot reboot -- this will reboot the device.
After Android 4.2 is loaded and running the SuperSU file must be copied from the "Root" folder to the internal storage (shows up in Windows Explorer as a Nexus device). A simple copy and paste will do the trick here.
Then you have to power off the Nexus device and enter "fastboot mode" again. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate until you can select "Recovery Mode". After the power button is pressed the device will reboot in the new custom recovery.
Rooting your Nexus device
If you have ClockworkMod installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select "0" (zero) folder
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Yes - Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Go Back"
Select "reboot system now"
If you have Team Win Recovery Project installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Press "Install".\
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip" -- for me it's in the "0" (zero) folder
Swipe to confirm flash
Press "Wipe cache/dalvik" (just as a precaution)
Swipe to wipe
Press "Reboot System"
After Android 4.2 loads your device can run apps with elevated privileges (meaning it's rooted). A SuperSU app is installed in order to allow root requests, so please use your judgement on which apps you grant access.
If you experiences any problem, please reply and I will look into it.

^^you want him todo that, lmao, he doesnt even know how to put a file on his sdcard to flash it in recovery, theres no way a computer newb is going to be able to follow what you posted
That's why I have not used the word flash anywhere, I know that he does not know how to flash , I have posted the right thing for a total noob,( at least if he knows how to use command in windows or install drivers)
I helped him in the way I could and what he requested

You think that helped. LOL. Your telling him to do things that aren't even required to gain root with this device. Not everything is a nexus bro. Next time you wanna help study up on the phone your giving advice about. lol
Well , thanks for telling me that every android isn't rooted in same manner, I was thinking that all devices are rooted in same ways like for my nexus

naman14, im not putting you down, your step by step howto is admirable, good work, but the problem is that the op is clueless on tech stuff, its not the word "flash" he has a problem with, i could of said "install" and it would lead to same conclusion, he doesnt know how to copy a file to his sdcard, if he cant do that he has no business in modding his phone until he learns more. anyhow the op is long gone by now
I upgraded my samsung skyrocket s2 version 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 through the Kies. Then I tried to install TWRP 2.2.0 and Odin 1.85. I saw COM 14 ; COM 17 when I hit start button .It said
FAILED. Now it showed a yellow triangle in the middle of phone & monitor pictures. ( including : Firmware upgrade encountered an issue . please select recovery mode in Kies & try again). Please help . Thank you very much.
I just tried other laptop . I saw COM 3 but it said it couldn't open the serial (COM )port . All thread completed (success 0/ failed 1)

Worked for me!
Thanks a lot for this information and for the recovery image!
Here is how I did it:
Download this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jbtsydi9ii...ot DG800.zip
http://www37.zippyshare.com/v/82645339/file.html
I already had drivers for flashing from here (continue reading the thread to find how to install for Windows 8):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206421
I found the Doogee Dg800 Official ROM here:
http://www.doogeemobile.com/download
I also used the SPflash tool Doogee provides.
Then:
1) Extract the zip from the first (dropbox link) and put the file named UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip on your SD card.
2) Put the supersupro.apk on the SD card too.
3) Unzip the official Doogee ROM
4) I did not replace the recovery.img in the official ROM folder
5) Open SPFlash and open the scatter file via the FIle menu - for me this was called MT6582_Android_scatter.txt
6) By default all the entries that are loading will be selected (ticked)
7) Following this tutorial (http://www.gizbeat.com/3774/how-to-flash-cwm-without-root-with-sp-flash-tool/) for installing CWM I did:
- Unselect all (remove tick) except for the entry named RECOVERY
- Click on the entry (click on the word RECOVERY)
- Navigate to the recovery image provided in the first download
8) Click Download in SPFlash Tool
9) Turn off your phone
10) Remove the battery for a few seconds
11) Replace the battery but do not turn on the phone
12) Connect the phone via usb cable
13) The bar in SPFlash Tool should go red
14) It should then go yellow and load to the end
15) A green circle should pop up - success.
16) Disconnect you phone and hold Volume Up button and Power button till you go to recovery (hold for a while)
17) You see only three options - select the first one called "recovery". Up volume is for changing options down volume is to select.
18) Now you see the recovery menu - select the second option, using the down volume key, called "install zip from sdcard"
19) Select this with the power button
20) Select the first option in the new menu - it's called "choose zip from sdcard"
21) Scroll down to UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip and select it
22) Scroll down to the option that says "Yes - Install UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip
23) You will see it install, when it finishes, scroll to the bottom of the menu and select the "++Go Back++" until you get to the first menu
22) Select "reboot system now"
23) Install supersupro.apk
24) As suggested do the following:
- Open SuperSU and leave so
- Settings:
- Mark activate superuser
- Mark survival mode
- Uncheck re-authentication
- Allow access by default
- Uncheck display notifications (I want notifications so I did not do this)
- Access full content ( I don't think I saw this option)
Done!
Check for successful root using something like Root Checker Basic from app store.
I did this to solve GPS issues that I had with the phone, keep reading for how I solved those problems:
Problem: Applications could not connect to GPS
Solution: Reflash official ROM using this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982587
with drivers from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206421
New problem: GPS is poor and takes long to get a fix.
Solution: Follow this tutorial: http://www.gizbeat.com/2159/gizbeat-101-gps-not-working-on-mtk6589-mtk6577-mtk6575/
which basically comes down to installing and using FasterGPS
Trouble rooting DG800
Hi there
I have spent the last day trying to find a way to root my DG800 and finally came across this post which I see many say it seems to work. However i am a bit confused because for the life of me I can't find the zip-UPDATE-v1.99.zip folder anywhere. This is one of the first steps but I have downloaded and extracted the 3 links given at the top of this post. After extracting the first folder i get 3 more folders 'all mtk usb driver', 'Recovery' and 'SP_FLASH_TOOL_V3.1328.0.183'. As you can see neither of these files are called 'zip-UPDATE-v1.99.zip'. Where am I meant to find this folder that you are talking about? I have searched through every folder and subfolder that came in the downloaded files and I don't find this file you are talking about. I have tried to re download these links from different sources and still can't find that file. Have searched my entire computer and cannot find the file called 'zip-UPDATE-v1.99.zip'. Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.
Thanks
