So this might be one of the lamest questions on the forum in a while. Then again it maybe not.....
Let me clarify in the easiest way what my issue is. I can scroll through my contacts, and cannot find the person I am looking for. However, I can open SMS and type the persons name, and it appears automatically.
I previously had my settings to only sync existing contacts. I have since gone through and included "sync all". I've also tried cleaning up my contacts by linking FB accounts with contact numbers, but can't pull up some contacts via FB to link them. I assume this is because I didn't have "display all contacts" selected when initially syncing FB. I am going to delete FB and add it again, I assume that will at least fix the latter mentioned issue.
Some please tell this idiot how to fix this. :cyclops:

Thanks, I'll do so now.
Fwiw, I just pulled up one of these mentioned contacts via SMS.....I long-pressed the name, and viewed contact. While viewing the profile, there was a button from "add to my contacts". Wtf, I'm so confused lol

Hi Guys,
i got a serious problem, i synced my contacts with google, now i got the problem, that i got every number like 5 times (all the same nr.) @ the contact list.
This is pretty annoying, because of this issue i got around ~4000 contacts saved..
Is there any app or so, that lets me just check/uncheck the contacts i want to delete so i can easily resort my contact list.
All the apps i found so far are only able to delete a single contact per task.
Thats a bit awful with ~4k contacts, thats why i ask you now
thx in Advance
Syther
Hey
really no one?
Bump ^^
thx in advance !
I'm calling shenanigans on the 4000. I just manually deleted my contacts. I found a multiple select contacts app so I could batch delete contacts.

Simple steps: make sure all your contacts are on Google, wipe data, login to Google, fixed!

Hello Guys,
thx for the responses.
I already did several wipes (installed different builds) but google automatically syncs all ~4k contacts to my mobile phone.
Maybe someone had this problem too and could solve it easier then delete every single contact alone.
regards

I had the same issue as you, syther.
I didn't think about looking for an app that would do that.
1) Go online (using GMail) to the Google account your phone is linked to.
2) On the left there should be a button called "contacts."
3) Click it and it should bring you to all your contacts that are synced to it.
4) Click the "more actions" button and go to "find & merge duplicates."
It won't merge all of the duplicates, but it'll merge most of the ones you have hopefully.
An example of a contact not merging would be
Joe-Bob (555-555-5555) and Joe-Bob (+1555-555-5555)
For that scenario I just went and deleted it manually through GMail to ensure it will never sync those contacts again.
Hopefully that will lessen the burden of deleting your contacts manually.

you will also want to create groups in Google's contacts. What you may have happening is the ton of random one time emial addresses that got saved.
I've created a "main" group that only has legitimate contacts and haven't had any issues since.
You can also export all of the contacts out of Google into a .csv file that you can open in excel and fix to your hearts desire.
Thank you !
I could´ve come on that idea on my on lol - most time, the simplest things you cant find hehe
awesome i solved it through gmail directly really thank you people!
Well, i gave up setting default actions to "call mobile" to all contacts that i have inside of this widget, as every time i reboot they all are gone except the #1 contact in it, that has the setting stored.
Do you have the same behaviour?
Maybe there's some possible fix for that?
I have the same thing going on with mine. I have about 8 contact so far and only 5 of them will keep the default action, so i just gave up until its fixed. Hopefully it will be fixed in the update.
I had this problem and have found the fix....works for me.
Go to the web site for Gmail and put the contacts that you want to keep a "default action" in the "Starred in Android" folder.
No issues here. All mine are sticking. I have them backed up to my exchange server though and did my initial sync to bring them in.

I'm not sure. I've been syncing with exchange since smart phones existed and when I setup my exchange account on my new phones it just pulls everything in. My last phone was an HD2 so I had the people widget setup on that. Every sense Rom I used after that has just synced and pulled them in.

What i did was exported all my contacts from my previous phone (nokia n900) to vcard, then in gmail i went to contacts page, imported all contacts from vcards. then in my HTC i just set to sync with my google account and voila, it works
This just happened and I don't know how. all my contacts, all of them, in my G2X are duplicated.
A web search pulls up the only suggestion of "delete the duplicate contact". Duh. I've got 100+ contacts and I can't set aside one day to do that.
Oh, I've had the phone since October and the first thing I did was turn OFF sync with Google.
The only difference between the duplicates is that while I don't have birthdays in my contact list, now all contacts have a duplicate with a birthday of 00000000.
Any suggestions?
Export in csv and remove the bday column. Re-import.

Wow, you just wasted a ton of your time. Let's use a little deductive reasoning: gee my phone contacts are linked to my Gmail contacts, maybe if I go to my Gmail I can do something about all these duplicates. Oh, look a there, it has an option to detect duplicate contacts, and oh, it works perfectly.
Now, sarcasm aside, that's pretty much how it went when I had all my contacts get duplicated.

Gee, I wrote that my phone contacts aren't linked with Google. Oh, look, if I go to my GMail I'll see my contact list is empty. Oh, look a here, it means that my GMail account has nothing to do with this.
I like this deductive reasoning. Let's try another one! I deduce that you only read the last post in a thread.
Good answer's. Now I can fix my duplicate contacts.

Contacts is only showing the contacts with phone numbers - I'm not seeing any of my email-only contacts. I've dug around and can't find the option in either Contacts or People to show all contacts.
I'm on Euroskank CM9.
Did it by any chance combine/join contacts with similar names?

Nope. Out of 200 something contacts on Google, there's only around 75 with phone numbers and that's all I'm seeing. I've tried wipes, syncs, viewing options, and I just can't get those other contacts to show.
I'm hoping it's a bug, similar to Facebook sync, that needs to get worked out or just a bad pick on the kang.
Try going into people app or the phone app and press the menu button and choose "contacts to display", maybe there's something there.
Or you can try going into the email app itself.
Update: I found out that if you go to the people app and you're on your favorites it won't show also if you go to groups so try it where all the contacts show, just if you didn't know.

Here's what I've tried so far:
1. contacts --> display options --> check all boxes under my Google account. Doesn't work. I do see the group I want to show ("all other contacts" or something like that)
2. people app --> nothing works here. I don't see the group I want to show.
3. Gmail app --> I can start typing an email address and all of my contacts will pop up, but this is only in the Gmail app and I'm not able to view the contact profile. From this, I can see that all of my contacts are indeed synced so now it's just a matter of getting them to show up properly either in People or Contacts.
Well I tried a few things and I'm getting the same problem. Maybe its gmail because on the other email app it works and it syncs fine. The only way I got them to show was adding them to the contact.

No worries, thanks for helping. The error actually went away after I flashed yesterday's build of the ROM I'm using. It's only the second or third build of the series so probably bugs and bad picks are getting filtered out.
Hi guys I've tried doing a search and couldn't find anything so apologies in advance for my incompetence.
I'm new to the Android community and recently got my S3. I'm feeling very frustrated with the contacts syncing because the phone is syncing all of my contacts from gmail including the "other contacts" folder. However doing a basic search in google says that once you setup your android phone the contacts that sync are those in the "my contacts" folder. Is there any solution to this? There doesn't seem to be any place where I can restrict which contact folder from gmail it should be syncing with.
Thanks.
you would need to go to setting accounts and turn off contact sync.

Hey thanks for the reply, but clicking on the google account and disabling sync contacts? If so this didn't work I still have 244 contacts that are not assigned, and they happen to be the ones that are from the my other contacs folder, also if i disable the contact sync would that also disable the contacts that I'm interested in backing up with google?
Thanks.

Yeah I think I'm not saying things right let me try this,
so gmail saves contacts automatically everytime you send an reply, fwd,etc.. and those contacts are saved in the Other contacts group, this group shouldn't sync itself to the android contacts from My Contacts group in gmail (at least from what I've read) however for some reason it keeps syncing and I end up with 244 unassigned contacts which basically are people whom I'm really not interested in having as a contact in the phone?
Thanks again.

try going to groups in your contacts app and deleting un-necessary ones (try doing this with a group which has only 1-2 unimportant contact names - so that if it gets deleted from gmail contacts as well - you don't lose many, also always backup )
I got the fix for ya. Go to contacts hit the menu / contacts to display / customize list / then click on Ur gmail . U should c it then choose the groups u want to be synced ....

Ok. First try scrolling down when you are looking for contacts to display. Second it sounds like you are lazy and don't want to manage your contacts very well. If they are not contacts you need why are you keeping them? I simply take a few min once in a while and clean house... Deleting contacts that were randomly saved.
Hope that helps.

I do understand you, I have many old and JIC contacts in my gmail that I don't want to delete, over 2700, but I only want 100 or 200 tops sync to my phone. If I play with the display settings when I enter the conects, only the contacts I want are displayed, but when I search for an specific contact, it searches over all the 2700 contacts and makes my Galaxy S3 verry slow, my old galaxy s2 as well,
If my memory does not fail, when I had the galaxy Ace with gingerbread, the contacts navigation and search was much faster because only the contacts in "My Contacts" where Sync into my phone, i am allmost positive of that. thanx for any responses.

did not notice that there was a second page, i am new in the forum.
it is not lazy in my case, i have purged over 2000 contacts when i merged the information from my Facebook Contacts, Linked In, Yahoo, MSN, manualy merging some becuse the automerge process did not work for some cases (inverted names with diferent emails (old and new) or phone numbers, etc), but if i delete one and i review and old email, i won't know who was that from, oe maybe where i knew them from (have them in groups or notes) to organize a reunion :good:. anyway deleting information goes agains Gmal Policy (Never have to delete an email or contact again) LOL any help is welcome
