[REQ] Tutorial to backup to original firmware - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

hello i'm trying to original firmware (the last one i can find) but i can't do it with adb or custom recovery maybe i 'm too stupid or french ^^
but if someone can make a thin tutorial , then i can send my tablet to Acer for the screen issue (not solved by the tricks of parameter)
thank a lot

@Amidamaru87,
If you already have CWM installed then it's very easy.
1- Take the original (base) firmware, not the last one. Very likely the last one is not a complete firmware but an update to the original one.
2- Take the update.zip file and unzip it to a folder.
3- Go to folder "\META-INF\com\google\android"
4- Edit the updater-script and put a # as first character of first line. This will avoid this line to execute: #assert(getprop("ro.product.name") == "a510_...");
5- Zip all files again and name it update.zip.
6- Flash it with CWM.
7- When asked to avoid bootloader installation say "NO". This will restore the original bootloader and lock it again. You will not have CWM any more but I think this is what you want right?
That's all.
From this point on you are at factory state. If you connect to internet very likely Acer will send you an OTA update but it's up to you to install it.
Regards.

fast , accurate ! thanks a lot

but i have only image ...

Download from The official Acer site:

I tried to get back to factory state , but i got an "instalation aborted" message every time that i tried
I downloaded the R28.RC02.WW.GEN1 from the site that you linked, unzipped , added "#" character to the first line at the update script file, rezipped and renamed to update.zip
I also copied the file to ext sd and internal sd
I'm currently at franken a700 with nothrills recovery

@ursur,
I would recommend:
- Unzip and zip with another application. Some times wthis could be a problem.
- Edit the script with a linux compatible editor like Notepad++, freeware, google it. Avoid Wordpad or other editors that insert line feeds of CR.
It works for me using internal or external SD.
Regards.

One Hint:
8- When CWM asked to avoid root say "NO".

What does it mean 'flash with cwm'?
IS it this command : fastboot flash recovery update.zip?
Sorry for stupid question.

Recovery verified failed
Hey guys,
i installed a stockrom from acer with your instructions and it was completly done. I had Nothrills 700 Franken before.
i just answerd this question : When asked to avoid bootloader installation say "NO". This will restore the original bootloader and lock it again. You will not have CWM any more but I think this is what you want right? with YES because i wanted to keep cwm.
The tablet restarted normaly and when setting up acer told me that there is a update so i did the update.
Now the tablet restarted and i get the message : booting recovery kernel imag
and in the second line: Recovery verified fail...
in the middle of the screen you can see the acer logo.
WHAT CAN I DO NOW??? I can't reboot the tablet. Holding the power button get no impact. Shoud i wait till the battery is empyt and then?
I read smthg about fastboot and get a stock recovery. Is that a possibility? if yes, who will give me an instructions what i have to do.
Thx for your help.
But at the Moment i'm very desperate
P.S. Sorry for my bad english

Ok, about 2 months ago, I flashed to a Nothrills ROM and all. Then, I wanted to go back fully stock, and I did the same as you mentioned above.
Today, I tried updating my tab OTA and I am getting "Recovery verified failed..." error. Nothing that I can do. Mind you, I was on stock ROM and all, just that I was rooted.
Thanks.

maybe just root is a problem

I'm happy you sorted it out.
Safest way to go back to factory is to load the original bootloader i.e. saying NO to step 7:

With system powered off, press and hold ‘Power’ and ‘Vol -‘
b. When the system vibrates, release the ‘Power’ button.
c. When the system vibrates a second time, slide your finger from ‘Vol-‘ to ‘Vol+.”
d. When the system vibrates a third time, release that button.

Tutorial to backup to original firmware on A511
You have a Acer Iconia Tab A511 with e.g. A510 (Custom-)ROM without 2G/3G and you can not install the A511 firmware, cause Status 7 or Status 4 errors?
Deleting the line in the install script with the name of the device doesn't work? Using an other editor and 7zip for repacking is not the solution?
try this way

Just flash a full rom, it should restore the radio, the recovery, and the OS. Then do a reset to factory defaults if you are paranoid.
Get the proper rom for you phone here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
If you're on T-Mobile, you have an i9020-T, this should work for you. It is the full 2.3.6 image.

Is this also working if you're coming from stock unrooted ICS 4.0.3 ?
And
Is there any risk of loosing IMEI if you're going full ROM ?

I have reverted back from 4.0.3 yesterday by reflashing the full 2.3.6 rom without any issues. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by losing IMEI.
My phone works just fine after doing this (more than once!).

Ok here's my problem i did the ics update earlier before you told me this and still having issues, now when I go to recovery I get a android with his chest open with a red caution sign on it...how could I just format everything, essentially make it the way it was out of box so I could start over...because of all the issues I'm currently having.
When you get to that point, you need to hold down power then press vol up. Then you will be able to flash the zip. You need to put the zip on the phone first though, unless you have CWM recovery, in which case you can mount the sdcard section and move it across then, and flash it after.
OK thanks...Just please let's summarize this
1.You were on I9020T bone stock , unrooted
2.You had GB 2.3.6
3.You updated manually (or OTA) to 4.0.3
4.You decided to revert to GB 2.3.6
5.You used exactly the same method of manual update (stock recovery after copying the .zip file and in this case the full ROM of 2.3.6 to SD)
6.You followed the stock recovery steps and chose the .zip 2.3.6..
7.After everything was setup , you booted into GB 2.3.6 without any problems
Is that right ? or better if you make the exact detailed steps you did to revert to GB 2.3.6 would be apreciated
Thanks

how would I go about flashing the custom recovery? I tried to flash another full rom package with the recovery in it and like i said i got that error...
Do you have a folder in windows where you have been flashing stuff from, using fastboot?
If so, just get this recovery image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
Download either the blue or green 5023 image. Doesnt matter which just changes colour of mod place the file in the same folder as the fastboot.
Next, with the phone off and after attaching the phone to USB, turn it on while pressing vol-up and power. You should see the boot option screen, the fastboot screen. Leave the phone there.
Now go back to cmd window in windows, and browse to the folder where you have all the fastboot files and where you have put the above image file. Then type in the following:
fastboot flash recovery <image name.img> (without the < >)
press enter and it'll flash the recovery and then you can install the old version of android

I don't believe I have a folder as such, being a person who is not familiar with the lingo, etc of all this i rooted it with one-click mod, and just flash things through this, are you saying I can flash things externally? sorry to sound like a bum, but i'm trying to understand thanks.
No problem, we're all noobs once, hell i still am and only just coming to terms with it all! Just need to do a bit of researching, but heres the basics...
fastboot lets you flash stuff to the phone from windows, when the phone is attached to the USB and is in fastboot mode (just turned on, from vol-up/pwr).
Can unlock the boot loader and flash recovery images from there. Once thats done, most other stuff can be done from within the new recovery mode, clockworkmod being the one that everyone uses.
over at nexusshacks it's explained really well how to root your phone. And he provides a zip with everything you could want. That zip is the folder I was talking about in the last post. It comes with drivers to install when you first plug the USB in and the PC recognises the phone. Download the pack, install them drivers and then go back to my last post and take it from there
http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/NexusS/rooting/nexussrootnew.zip
EDIT: Also do a full wipe/data reset just before you flash the new rom

I'm using clockwork right now, but it seems to be corrupted, im running 4.0.3 right now on a full rom package, so your saying I should still do this? I think i may have done all that before, as the phone is rooted, but I used the one-click method instead.
Just download that file and then you'll have what you need on your pc to do what i mentioned above. Plug the phone in and reflash the new recovery which will not harm it, and then you'll be able to stick gingerbread or ICS back on. You gotta try things out otherwise you'll not understand what is going on. I dont know of any one click thing that will let you go back to default as it was before. After it flashes the new recovery, scroll down to "recovery" on the screen and press the power button, dont restart the system.
In hindsight, while the one click methods are easy to use, theyre getting used by people that dont do the necessary research to learn about the rooting and flashing process. This means you end up skipping so much that you learn about the whole rooting and flashing proocess when doing it manually, which in turn means you have more trouble getting out of it if you want it back to the way it was! No offence intended here, but you just need to man up and do it! All will be well

[A510][RECOVERY][2012-12-15] CWM-based Recovery 6.0.1.9 (JB compatible)

CWM-based recovery 6.0.1.9 for the Acer Iconia TAB A510
Another recovery build? Yes... But I can say this recovery is pretty safe. Having said that, however:
*** I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device ***
There is still a risk in bricking your tablet
I've been testing various different ways to get custom ROMs going on this tablet, for over 6 months now. Developing for this tablet seems kinda dangerous (compared to my private building on HTC devices), and I already had to send my device back to Acer because of a brick once. At this point, I guess this recovery seems pretty safe, and hence I'm willing to release it in public. This recovery is inspired by the CWM-based recovery 6.0.1.1 for the Icona TAB A700 by pawitp. So first of all, I want to say thanks for his work and the talks we had.
The recovery itself is built by me so all partitions on the A510 are propely initialized, sized, and mounted: Including access to both internal storage (the 'fake' sdcard) and external MicroSD cards, as well as the flexrom partition. As an additional (see below) precaution, i've supressed 'EMMC wipe' commands in the recovery.
The kernel for this recovery has been compiled by me, disabling all the MMC_CAP_ERASE functions to prevent the 'Samsung EMMC brick' from happening. This does not give you a 100% guarantee, but it comes pretty close.
As explained in this post, the new CWM recovery does not really format your /data partition. It simply removes all files with the 'rm' command, leaving your 'fake' sdcard intact. The recovery in this post does format your other partitions, but it should show this message: 'warning: wipe_block_device: Wipe via secure discard suppressed due to bug in EMMC firmware'. Don't worry, that's a good thing!
Things to note:
I have mounted every partition with this recovery without problems
I have formatted/wiped every partition with this recovery without problems
I have backed up and restored (nandroid) every partition with this recovery without problems
I have installed custom .ZIP files with this recovery without problems
I still won't give you any warranties - This recovery can brick your tablet
How to install:
Step 0:
Check this thread to see if you can help the community before you let us help you!
Step 1:
Copy the file attached to this post (remove_recovery_from_rom.zip, (MD5: 73aea1147f571a83caeb8743cd5972b4)) to your tablets internal memory or SD Card. Download the CWM-Based Recovery by NoThrills for A510 tablets and save it somewhere on your computer.
Step 2:
If your device is already bootloader unlocked, skip step 3. Your boot screen (the one with the Acer logo when you turn the device on) should read Bootloader Version x.xx.xx-ICS (Unlock Mode). If your device is not yet unlocked, continue to the next step:
Step 3:
Connect your tablet to your computer via USB. Make sure you have the Android SDK installed, and perform the following command:
adb reboot-bootloader
When the tablet reboots to the Acer logo, perform the next command:
fastboot oem unlock
Then, quickly press the Volume down (**) button on your tablet, followed by the Volume up (*) button to confirm the unlock. When done:
fastboot reboot
Step 4:
Connect your tablet to your computer via USB. Make sure you have the Android SDK installed, and perform the following command:
adb reboot-bootloader
When the tablet reboots to the Acer logo, perform the next command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_nothrills.img
This assumes you have put the nothrills_recovery.img in the same folder as the ADB utility.
Step 5:
Reboot your tablet with the following command, but you have to keep the Volume down (**) button pressed when the tablet boots:
fastboot reboot
Step 6:
Install the remove_recovery_from_rom.zip file from the Recovery, then reboot your device.
Your tablet now has this new recovery installed. You can enter the recovery by typing the command adb reboot recovery, or by booting your tablet with the Volume down (**) button pressed.

Make sure to have the required DLLs in the same directory you are executing adb from (or in a specified PATH).

Well I flashed this and even though it says the recovery is successfully written, when I reboot into recovery all I get is the android with the red exclamation mark and it never boots into the recovery at all??? weird.
Notice that the recovery files has been mixed up, but when you download from the mirror link, the nothrills_recovery.img is in it.
Just redo the procedure with the right file, not the factory 1.0.044, and you will be good to go.
On a subsequent note to the dev:
This is ****ing brilliant!
It works, damn it! Thank you for the work, we've been waiting for this **** to come along for a looong time, and even thou you stand on shoulders from work done on the A700, be asured that a lot of us is clappin' our hands now, thanks to you

I have tried both of the files from the regular and the mirror sites and it says it completed ok, but I still do not have the custom recovery. I have done this many times on different devices and this is the first time it does not work, I am following the instructions by the letter too. LOL!!!
Anyone with A511 tested it ?

Does anyone know if this could be flashed using terminal emulator. Using ADB I get confirmation that it sent and wrote the files ok to the tablet, but I still just get the dead android with the red exclamation when I try booting into recovery, regardless of wheather I use adb or the button holding methods.

Have u checked the MD5? (MD5 for .img: 6ea6e278ebe2e9f093bcdef5ea07a990)
Maybe u should download the file again and make sure the MD5 correct.

I did check the MD5 and it matches the MD5 on the OP and on your post as well, so the file is good. I have re downloaded the file 4 times already too.
Did you really reboot directly into recovery after flashing? If you were a little too slow and gave the stock firmware a chance to boot it will first reflash the stock recovery. If you then boot again and go into recovery you will get the fallen droid with exclamation mark.
I had experienced the same problem. After flashing the recovery it will automatically reboot and give you an extremly short time frame to go into recovery.

This is what I'm thinking as well. I should probably edit the instructions on the first post, as I didn't think about the fact that people might not have the recovery_from_boot files removed.

I just followed the instructions and rebooted into ICS then ran the adb reboot recovery command. So you are saying to run the adb reboot recovery command immediately after it finishes flashing. I may just try this later today. I got it to boot into recovery once and then went back to the dead android, then I followed the updated instructions on the op and now it works every time and it boots into the CWM recovery every time.

I've updated the first post with a 'remove recovery' .ZIP file. Follow the new instructions and you should be set.

If you have a JB image to work from, get it in fastboot mode and look at the thread on CWM Recovery 6.0.1.5...

To get into fastboot mode, it's the following combination;
- Press [vol-] + [power]
- As soon as the tablet vibrates, let go [power] then cycle your rotation lock button left and right till you see the the text start to appear.
Unless you;re going to try and fastboot a system image setup or recovery image or another boot.img, not sure what you wish to accomplish.
I would guess you would be better off installing maybe the GB full version JellyBean update.
Also, I understand there,s a a700 ICS service rom out there somewhere. That might help you also.
But these are just guesses at this point.
What would help, is to know exactly what you did to get yourself into this situation. Like What root procedure from what post? If you tried one of the ICS Boot.image flashes, when you had JB updated, well, no wonder it borked up. If that's the case, it's simple just to fastboot a JB Boot.img back in.
So which thread did you get the root procedure from EXACTLY?
One more thing, this thread belongs in Q&A Forum, so I put in a request to have it moved.

Thks MD for ur instant reply.
Sorry for dont put my thread into the Q&A Forum. It was a mistake. Sorry again
My situation is: "like i remember" i tried to make the root with the "flash-ICS-patchedBoot.bat".....i know that BAT is for ICS and not for JB but i take that mistake doing the thing really fast.
Ok...i need them to get the fastboot with the JB Boot.img like you said.
The JB Boot.img is into the Rom??? because i saw the boot.img into the JB update.zip
Can u tell me the command to get that flash? Is "fastboot flash boot boot.img"?
Thks for ur patience

It's no problem.
So you fastbooted an ICS boot.img on a JB rom
So, you need to see if you can manually get it into fastboot mode with the procedure I pointed out above (note it will probably wipe your user data, but who cares)
If you get it in fastboot mode, verify via windows device manager, then just put a JB Boot image in there. I have a little package in my Boot.image thread Full /System RW-Root. Don't use the boot mage in it, as it's for a 701. Just copy your JB boot.image in there and fastboot it. You have the correct command.
Verboth has a new rom, that contains an unsecure boot.img for the 700 JB. You can use that one also. It's what you were trying to do originally, just with a wrong image (ICS)
The reason ADB doesn't see it, is because the system isn't running. The newer CWM recoveries should have adb enabled through CWM, but I don't think you put that in yet.
Hopefully you'll get it fastbooted.

Okay, so since I just did this, I'm going to try and give you a "how to" on how I fixed it...
MD and pawitp both are the authorities on this, but I think this will help and I a, sure they will correct me where I go wrong.
First, use the manual process for getting your A700 in fastboot.. power button + down vol, wait for the first buzz then release only the power button, wait for the second buzz then press the up volume button. Your tab should now be in fastboot mode.
Connect it to your computer.
Get a copy of the proper recovery image "recovery-a700-6015" and the following ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952124) and save them to a directory where you can find it easily.
Pull the SD card from your tab and put the ROM from above in the base directory and put it back in your tab.
From the c prompt on your computer use the following fastboot command:
Fastboot devices
----#make sure that the computer sees your a700
Fastboot boot <save directory>recovery-a700-6015.img
----#your tab will reboot into CMR Recovery
In recovery format system, data, cache, dalvik
Still in recovery install the ROM from your external SD card.
The Aroma Installer will guide you through it, but make sure you tell it to install the new firmware.
Reboot.
You should be on the stock rooted ACER Great Britain release.
From there you can download and install CM10 (which is what I did), or any other ROM you would like.

Hello everybody,
I think I have NOT exactly the same problem but very similar.
Let me explain how I got there:
I had JB bootloader and CM11 installed for long and working fine.
Last days I tried out the CM12.1 unofficial rom with successful installation.
I noticed that the camera focus was not working. Usually I never use the camera and was not sure if it worked before. So I went back to CM11 to look if it is rom dependent. In CM11 it still was not working and I went back to stock. The stock rom I found was Android 4.0.4 and I tried to make OTA update what showed me a “not allowed to your device” –error.
However, at this moment I was quite sure that the camera focus is a hardware defect and wanted to go on testing the new CM12.1. I installed it again from CWM recovery and it was not booting anymore.
The problem is, that the stock rom flashed an ICS bootloader which is not compatible anymore. I also cannot boot into recovery anymore but fastboot is working.
Power-On:
shows Bootloader Version ICS-MR1-a055314 (Unlock Mode) and nothing more
Power-On + Vol.Down:
Bootloader Version ICS-MR1-a055314 (Unlock Mode)
Erasing Cache before SD update…
SD update cnd: recovery
--update_package=SDCARD:update.zip
Booting recovery kernel image
Then for just a second CWM is shown:
CWM-based Recovery v6.0.5.1
Finding update package
E:unknown volume for path [SDCARD:update.zip]
E:Can't mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted.
Rebooting...
Then it holds on Bootloader Version ICS-MR1-a055314 (Unlock Mode)
I could not find any button combination to boot something else.
What I tried and what did not make any changes:
Flashing the recovery.img again
Erase userdata, cache, system
Please help me to boot up recovery again and flash a JB bootloader and new rom.
Thanks and kind regards,
Gandlz
Well, in between I found a solution and can answer my own question now:
The trick is to flash the CWM Recovery not to the recovery partition but to the boot partition. (fastboot flash boot recovery.img)
After restarting the tablet it boots directly into CWM Recovery.
I found a newer stock rom with jelly bean android and installed it to come back to JB-Bootloader. Now I could install CM10.2 CM11 or CM12.1 again.
The stock rom is from a german forum:
android-hilfe.de/thema/a700-zurueck-aufs-deutsche-stock-rom-flashen-anleitung-imagefile.329590
By the way: I’m running CM10.2.1 and it is very much faster than CM11 or CM12.1. I don’t need the newer features and like the old design even more. And also the camera focus is working now, so it is definitely a software issue with newer CM versions.
Best regards,
Gandlz

I don't know if I bricked my phone trying to install custom recovery...please help..

I followed the instructions on the following website in order install jelly bean onto the blaze.
wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_t769
I finished the first part of the instructions up until where it says "You need now to manually reboot the phone into ClockworkMod Recovery mode by holding ." I did not know what to press since it has nothing after the word "holding" in the sentence. I did some research on Google to figure out how to do this, but without any luck. So, I think I just pressed the volume and up + down+power keys all together and then released the keys after the screen turned off and I felt 2 vibrations. after a few seconds the screen turned back on and it displayed the following:
==========================================
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-T769
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES(1 COUNTS)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
**shows an image with phone, computer screen, and a yellow warning sign**
FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERED AN ISSUE. PLEASE SELECT RECOVERY MODE IN KIES & TRY AGAIN.
===========================================
Now, no matter what I do, the phone keeps booting to this screen. As I understand it, I have to boot into recovery mode manually and then follow the instructions from the second part of the instructions list and install the jelly bean OS. How do I proceed from here because no mater what i do like removing the battery, sim and sd card and powering up again, it keeps going to this screen and it won't go beyond it. should i have followed the instructions on that site? and by the way, the only reason why I didn't follow any other site installation instructions is because I thought it would be flawless since it's an official instructions page for the cyangenmod ROM.
Thanks to everyone in advance for your kind help.

Just a soft brick. Very common, and very easy to fix. Unfortunately, I don't really know what to do. I think you must flash another proper firmware in Odin.. don't quote me on that though... just letting you know you can take a sigh of relief.

ok great that's good news!..
so i did some research and found that i need to use fastboot with adb to install this rom. but I cant find any instructions on google that tells me in clear simple language how to use it properly. i have the fastboot and adb files. i am able to run the fastboot console application successfully. but, i dont know what to do at this point. The phone is in the download mode warning screen where it tells me to press volume up or down keys. I have the phone plugged into the computer. so, is the battery being charged right now? I'm afraid it may die on me.
I'm reading those instructions from wiki.cyanogenmod.org for this and it is very unclear and meant for advanced users. I need plain simple instructions..
I typed in "adb reboot bootloader" and it says "error: device not found" and typing "fastboot update cm-10.0.0-t769.zip" says "<waiting for device>" but nothing happens.. it just hangs there.. and this was happening even after I installed the official samsung drivers for this phone.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help out this noob. thanks.

thank you for this info..
Following the instructions above restored the phone to the older stock rom for the blaze. so, what I am going to do is find clear, simple instructions on how to update the phone to jelly bean 4.1.2.
before restoring to stock though I managed to find a key combination to get the phone into the clockwork recovery mode screen. [press and hold volume up + down + power keys --> then when you see the samsung logo, release the power key while still holding down the volume up + down keys.. hold the keys for a few seconds and then release. --> recovery screen should be displayed] so I did a factory reset and then put the custom rom on the SD by inserting the SD card into the computer and then inserting it into the phone. I then chose the option to install the zip file from the SD card but it says "can't open file (bad)". This was the latest stable version of cyanogenmod. I tried nightly versions too and i got the same error message. I don't know if my sd card is screwed up. I doubt it, because I was able to use it with the phone a few days ago. how should I install the jelly bean update?
should i do it through rom manager or via the SD card? can someone please point me in the right direction? thanks.
Yeah, your doing to much work. All you need is download mode and Odin.

You were probably in the stock recovery, that's why it didn't flash.
Since you restocked, go to this thread and flash cwm recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591622
Then boot to it and flash the latest cm10 nightly and gapps from the cm thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922935

Theres a zip file called "gapps..." short from Google Apps, you need to install that too on top of the CM nightly zip file in order to get the ROM working.
Now that you back in the stock 2.3.6, you need to instal CWM again because you wiped it instaling thru Odin.
Once you have CWM, and the 2 zip files - CM nightly and the gapps, you go thru CWM and wipe the system first... then install the files, CM first, gapps after, heres what u need to do in CWM:
1. Advanced-->Wipe Dalvik Cache
2. Wipe Cache
3. Factory Reset
4. Install zip from SD card-->Choose zip from SD-->install CM nightly zip
5. Install zip from SD card-->Choose zip from SD card-->install gapps zip

download the Google Apps (gaps) zip file from the OP, and go do it.

I just had something similar happen. Yesterday my phone started boot looping and it eventually got to the point where it wouldn't load past the Samsung screen. I did a bit of googling and followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601 to a T. Everything worked on Odin, but now I'm stuck at the firmware upgrade encountered an issue. I tried to do it again and it all works but I get a NAND WRITE: ptn_erase fail on my device over and over, but Odin says it passed. I feel like I've tried everything. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks!

[Q]Help: Can't change custom rom

Hi,
I am new to this site and fairly new to rooting and stuff and need assistance with my Sony Xperia S (LT26i). If i am not in the right pace for this please point me in the right direction. I have installed a custom rom and custom recovery which let me upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3 which was working fine then when I flashed a different custom rom after that to get 4.4.1 I lost access to my custom recovery. The main issue is that I need help with changing the custom rom I have installed, for some reason I can no longer boot into TWRP or CWM (using power + vol up), the phone simply boots normally and skips the whole process therefore I cannot flash anything. I have looked for hours over the net on how to get into recovery but could not find a solution.
I also assumed that when installing custom recovery and custom roms that you would need to be rooted but when I check with Root Checker it says that I am not. So any assistance would be great

Do you know of any other site where I can get the firmware from?, when I try and extract the file after I download it it's corrupted. I have tried multiple times with no luck.

Here is 4.0.4
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaetLThpYzEwZUh5aTg/edit
steps:
how to install the newest Android 4.0.4 for Sony XPERIA S LT26i
a) first of all, check your firmware version (if you already have the newest one, you do not need this tutorial)
b) download and install latest Flashtool from here (mirrors Google Drive or Mega)
c) download also latest Android 4.0.4 (mirror) for Sony XPERIA S LT26i
d) paste the ftf file downloaded in step c) to folder „Firmware“ included in the XPERIA Flashtool
e) open the XPERIA Flashtool, click on flash and choose downloaded firmware, than click ok. Important - if you do not want to delete any data of your phone, just uncheck flashing userdata.sin file. All data will remain in your phone, but sometimes it can cause additional troubles. So it is better (and I recommend that) to do the backup of your personal data, than proceed with clean instalation and then restore your personal data.
f) turn off your phone and when Flashtool shows pop up window, connect phone to PC with holding volume down button
g) after few minutes all is done and your phone gets the new firmware
Here you got 3 ways to update good luck

Ok so I successfully downloaded the firmware file but I got an error when using the flash tool, I have attached the log if you can maybe help me out with what went wrong.

The clue's in the error message - you don't have the required drivers installed.
There's a directory named "drivers" under the main flashtool dir. Run flashtool-drivers.exe and install the appropriate drivers. I think "Common Drivers Viskan Board" is the one you need. I ended up installing all of them to get it to flash (which took ages).
Ok so I got it to work, all I had to do was hold down the vulumn down button for like an extra 5 seconds while it began to flash
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it

Hello again
So I have successfully rooted the device and installed TWRP but as before I cannot seem to get into the recovery mode, when I boot the phone with "power and vol +" it doesn't boot into recovery but instead there is a quick glimpse of what I think is the recovery mode (I cant actually see it but something happens for a split second) but it flashes past way too fast then goes to the normal Sony logo and continues booting normally. I have tried this like at least 20 times in the last 2 weeks and have researched other ways to boot into recovery but I can't seem to find anyone with an answer. Do you know what could fix this? Or is there a way to boot into recovery using a computer?
