[Q] how to root my hox, pls? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hello
I'm new here
I have a device belongs to AT & T 1.85 and I can not do a ROOT
I was watching all the explanations and still process fails
Please, if anybody can help me
Thank you!

Really all you have to do is unlock bootloader with HTC dev site then I installed cwm with a pc then flashed a custom pre rooted Rom then flashed the latest twrp recovery u don't have to root the phone first like some other devices unless u wanna stay on stock but have root.
If you look around on the forum and use google you'll find what you need.

DO NOT FLASH CWM. just twrp. Please don't give advice that could brick someone's phone if you don't know what you're talking about
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app

Umm worked just fine on my phone why wouldn't it work on his phone???

CWM is not officially supported, it is known to cause problems like wiping phones. TWRP is supported!

There has been at least 2 cases of bricked phones using cwm.

He has an AT&T One X. He can't just go and unlock the bootloader with HTC Dev. He has to change his CID before being able to do that.
And he shouldn't use CWM either.

I'm a newly rooted noob (just last night) and thank god you didn't see my post for some help. Your reply is horrible and insulting. Not to mention unhelpful. That's not how you treat someone who wishes to learn. I should know seeing as how I just rooted.

Friends thanks for answers
But still I did not understand how I do Root for the device
I tried the manual that explains how to change the CID but again it shows me failed

I acted according to this explanation briefmobile.com/how-to-root-htc-one-x-att
And that's what I got in cmd
* Daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* Daemon started successfully *
DON'T TOUCH THE DEVICE OR UNPLUG WHILE ROOTING!

The answer is quite simple. That root method is for 1.73 firmware.
You need this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
Use my index thread, and you would know this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

What's going wrong is that you are following directions you found with Google instead of reading and researching in the appropriate forums. It's not working because you are on 1.85 and you are using a method for 1.73 and 1.82.
This is the method you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
You will probably find this a bit intimidating. Before you do any of it, read carefully, research anything you don't understand, and don't start until you have a clear idea of what's going on.
This is, again, why I hate one-click tools and toolkits. They make it far too easy for people who don't know what they're doing to get in over their heads.
The tools and directions you need for this phone are all listed in this compilation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Stick to that and stay and you'll stay out of trouble.

OK, I did, and it did not work. The script runs through correctly, and at the end, su is installed on the phone, but FCs when trying to launch. After a reboot, su is gone.
Fortunately it didn't brick the phone.

1. enable usb debugging from settings - applications - development
2. plug phone to pc via usb cable - charge only
3. open extracted zip folder and click runme. thats all. (if experience any daemon hanging problems pls install htc sync and plug in phone so drivers are installed. once done delete htc sync and repeat root procedure)
PC will open a cmd screen with prompts that you need to follow. app does rest
4. After root is complete pls visit market and update SU app. once done root will be fully functional and eliminate any future FCs
5. Also as an extra tip you can install SU UPDATE fixer from market to update your binaries to 3.0
ALL DONE

Now everything is up2date and the app is in your applist again.

You have given literally NO info on what you have done to try and fix it. Have you even TRIED to read and understand what you have been told and instructed to do? Have you taken it upon yourself to read the dev section about restoring stock? We are not your helpdesk and xda doesn't exist to serve you. Get off your ass and do some basic troubleshooting and problem solving. If you get stuck somewhere along the way, people will lend a hand. But until you prove that you have at least some initiative and can take it upon yourself to at least go through the steps of fixing it don't come here expecting to be spoonfed. The info is already in the dev section and the dev section isn't that big yet. It's not hard to find.

Total recovery - flashing a RUU to completely restore your phone
If all else fails, this is your last resort.
This process will also erase all your data. But hey, beats having a dead phone, right?
First, ensure you have enough battery (more than 30%) to run an RUU.
Next, boot your phone into fastboot bootloader and open a command prompt window on your computer in the platform-tools folder.
Use the command:
fastboot getvar version-main
You now need to find the RUU that corresponds to this version. Start here. If you have problems visit #htc-one-x on freenode.
Now you must re-lock the bootloader using:
fastboot oem lock
It won't hurt to use the clear cache command as well
fastboot erase cache
Finally, run the RUU.exe that you have downloaded (must be used in Windows, and requires HTC drivers, which will have been installed whilst using HTCDev to unlock your phone).
This will write the /recovery, /boot, and /system to stock. You will need to start from scratch to unlock.
[edit]Extracting RUU if you have errors with the above method - Originally by torxx
Please note that this method isn't 100% reliable and should be considered a last resort; there have been various reports of this not working.
Many people have issues with flashing RUU's etc. having a bootlop.
Download a RUU (make sure you get the correct RUU, please see above)
Now open the .exe and make sure that it fully started.
Don't click anything, just go to windows icon and search for %temp%.
You will now find some folders, just search through these folders for the ROM.zip.
If you found it, you can copy it to your desktop or somewhere else.
Extract it with WinRar,7-zip or something like that and take the boot_signed.img and system.img.
Now copy the two files into the folder where the fastboot.exe is placed (if you have installed the Android SDK, it should be in platform-tools)
Plug in your One X, go into the bootloader and go into fastboot mode.
Navigate with the cmd in the folder with the fasboot.exe and the two .img's.
Now type in that:
fastboot flash boot boot_signed.img
fastboot flash system system.img
If everything worked, just reboot:
adb reboot

Could not agree more. Please READ the dev forums in detail before trying to do ANYTHING to your phone. Understand what you are doing before diving in.
Staying stock seems to be the best option for you. I know English is not your first language, which is fine; it's not my first language either. Reading all the development stuff can be challenging, but it's more dangerous to venture in this world unprepared.
The HTC One X is really very usable out of the box. Just use it and don't try anything funny.

[Q] Rogers HTC One X Loading Custom Roms

I'm thinking about romming an HTC One X for Rogers and I've tried looking up information about installing custom roms. I know I need to unlock the bootloader first and that TWRP is likely the easiest method in order to rom. But I've read some conflicting things. Does it matter which version of the software I have? There just seems to be multiple guides.
Would this guide work?
h t t p:// theunlockr.com/2012/06/05/how-to-install-twrp-2-1-recovery-on-att-and-rogers-htc-one-x/
I'm happy to do the research, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

You can root and unlock 1.94 then flash recovery and rom fine.
Rogers HTC One X can be unlocked through the HTCdev site. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install TWRP and flash any evita rom you want.

So I was able to unlock the bootloader. To install TWRP I installed GooManager and Installed "OpenRecoveryScript".
When I try to reboot the phone into recovery, nothing happens.
Is there a guide how to use TWRP. Most of the guides seem pretty basic, but I don't even know if I have it installed properly. I'm trying to install ViperX

hey! that's my guide! haha, glad to see my first real contribution be somewhat of a success.
As long as it's in the root directory (not in a folder) of the internal SDcard, you'll be fine. Also, make sure you make a backup of your stock ROM just in case you need to go back to it.
Another thing, copy down your APN settings (word by word) from your stock ROM. Not sure if Rogers is the same as Telus, but Telus needs two APNs to get LTE enabled. If you could PM those to me as well, I could add them to my guide as well. Thanks.
Ughhh. Tried to install ViperX 2.6.0 using TWRP however it didn't work. Says Checking Model ID then "assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")==

So if you would like toto back up your apps than yes u can use titanium but yes make a back up sounds like u already did of your stock rom ...download viper 2.00 put it on your SD where you'll remember. To find it ... Once in twrp hit wipe menu ...wipe system ..factory reset ...and wipe dalvic cache than go back to the home menu in twrp and click install and find viper and this is very important since you wiped system you'll see in viper menu flash stock kernel or install rom ...hit install rom and go from there if you don't you'll be stuck. At. HTC dev screen and have to get back into recovery

One last important thing in case u didn't know
If you're ever stuck in bootloop this will do the trick to get into bootloader and back to recovery
Turn on, hold power 10-15 seconds, until screen goes black, let off, press n hold volume down, press power just 2-3 seconds, let off power button but continue holding vol. Down
LoL wow, already done. Using the rom now.
Wow, that was easy. Not sure if I should have checked some of the options (like one to enable exchange mail, and another for better sound). But it was so easy I guess I can always just redo it.
Was starting to think rooting maybe wasn't worth it (last root I did was on the original Nexus). Just going through all the features on ViperX, I'm glad I did.

Find a RUU which main version is supported and higher than yours and flash it in the PD98IMG.zip way, that is what is the goldcard for. If you have a .exe RUU, then extract the rom.zip file using this method: http://www.xda-developers.com/xda-tv-2/how-to-take-apart-an-ruu-xdatv/
Re run the tool and you will be able to update the hboot and unlock it

fre3vo is missing in the tools\tmp folder. That is the exploit that gains temp root. Try downloading the tool again and make sure that you disable the Antivirus first. Then, check that fre3vo is there...
Thank you for the quick respond. Sorry to say, but still no success. I had already made a copy of fre3vo from the AAHK-tools to your Easy Ace Root Tool and got the mentioned error. On my Netbook is no malware scanner running.
With a new download of your tool, including fre3vo, the error is still here. After copying the directory "tool" to the root of my PC I got a new exploit error 21.
My DHD has rom 2.3.5 and sence 3.0 and I found a link with the advice to downgrade this ROM. Can it be that this downgrade is necessary?
So I think something is not finaly settled.
Regards
Heinz

I'm pretty new to this phone, I was hoping to put CM10.1 on it for my girlfriend. Will using this tool be enough to do that, or will I also need to gain S-Off? Thanks!

Yes. S-OFF will only be useful if you want to flash radios.

Alright. I probably don't need to do that. I have no idea what that does anyway.
So basically my steps are, use this tool and I'll have root+cwm, back everything up with TiB or something, and wipe and flash CM+inspiremod? And everything will be good, no need to change radios, whatever that does?
Seems easy enough
Thanks!

Read the OP. This is a root tool only. There is no S-OFF at the moment, if you are skilled you do it manually following the link in the OP.
UPDATE
New update. SU flashing in CWM for those who are experiencing issues with the perm root. Flashing is done manually but file is pushed to sdcard by the script.
You might want to add to the OP that unlocking the bootloader will wipe the internal memory. I didn't know this and ran the tool on my girlfriend's phone earlier today and now all her apps, contacts, messages, everything is gone. She's just a tad bit pissed at me. Oops.
Other than that though, the tool worked great!

Lol no problem. I should've assumed it would do that... It did on my Nexus, and everything got wiped. I just assumed that was a Nexus only thing.
Needless to say I'm in the doghouse now. No fun for me tonight

Just as a friendly notice the included touch recovery did not work for me and one other user that I seen. The non-touch version works just fine. I do not have this phone but was just helping a friend.
Have a great day

Yea man i've done that method numerous amount of times. when i do it "adb server out of date. killing...." and "ADB didn't ACK" comes up alot not sure if that's the reason why it won't let me root
Have you installed the latest HTC Sync Version on your Computer?
If not, install it. Maybe you're just running an old driver for your phone

My apologies if this is silly. Do you have adb installed
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
open the task manager, which has adb.exe process and end (kill) that process
Then close your oneclick and re-open it.
That should fix the "ADB server didn't ACK, failed to start daemon" Message.
If that doesn't work you could try installing the lastest android SDK with the latest ADB/fastboot
There's nothing wrong with the rooting procedure. Your lack of technical knowledge is what's holding you back. If you can't troubleshoot issues like this unlocking this phone may not be for you.
I dunno what I did or anything like that. But for some reason the ONLY way I can get adb to recognize my phone is to have HTC sync actually running but minimized. If I exit it from the tray or kill application adb tells me no device found or "waiting for device" indefinitely

Yeah the exploits don't root your phone, They guve temp root to give you supercid so you can unlock the bootloader on HTCDEV. Once your bootloader is unlocked you can flash recovery, after that you can flash su or a rooted rom.
