My understanding is that the current way to root your phone requires unlocking the bootloader through the HTC Dev process. There is no other way to root.
HOWEVER, you should be able to make a nandroid backup of all your phone data before you root, and then restore the data after your bootloader is unlocked. Search the forums on how to make a nandroid backup and restore. I am pretty sure you can make a nandroid backup before recovery, and then restore it after. This can be done using the adb.exe file. Let me know if you cant find anything on the forums about a nandroid backup.

Yes all data will be deleted as unlocking bootloader finishes with a factory reset...it is not mandatory to install custom ROMs...u can unlock bootloader and root ur phone while using complete stock firmware....

restore from backup

Ok so imnot really enjoying my experience of rooting so far and want to go back.
As soon as I rooted I made a backup using ROM manager then flashed to LBC Mod. If I want to go back to that backup do I need to go back to my original ROM or can I just restore from that backup from the new ROM I flashed?
Hmm I have ask same type of thread and waiting for repy :/

1) If I understand correctly you got S-off
2) then root
3) Then used Rom manager to perform a backup.
4) then you flashed LBC ROm
you know want to return to step 3) ?
You can either use ROM manager to restore the device to your previous backup or you could boot into recovery (CWM) and again use the restore option to restore your backup that you took earlier.

Yes it will.
Although, may I ask what you were not liking about the rooting experience and the LBC ROM?

what do you mean by update normally, android market or ota updates?
I'd personally avoid ota updates after getting soff and root.
And again can I ask what it was about the custom experience, that you didn't like?

I don't think there should be any problem doing an OTA update if you're on stock with root but you may loose root.
Well I bought this phone 2 monts ago and the it was in firmware version v10g_00 which is te latest till now.. so I have no expirience in updating, pluging in to comp and update it an so on...
so sorry if I looked so newbie
Anyway, yes it is about the ota update... where you choose the update notification and then update it via computer
and my question is can a backuped phone updates again like ... lets say updating it to gingerbread (that's what I'm facing)
Sorry for the interruption

Take a look in you gmail contact list. It will be synced when you start up a "clean" Android phone. If you want to keep your SMS's, you could try a program like SMS Backup +.
root it without unlocking bootloader, it won't wipe your device...
If you have Google account, your contacts will be sync by Gmail.
App data can be backup by Titanium Backup.
Root will not wipe ur data.
But unlocking bootloader does.
Also backup before root is recommended

How is that possible in 4.0.4?
As stated previously, once you unlock bootloader your data will be erased. And yes, once you install custom recovery (CWM), you can do a nandroid backup through it.

[Q] How do I backup

How do I backup my phone before doing a hard reset, unlocking the boot loader or installing a ROM?
use something like mybackup pro and post in the correct section next time
In Cwm there is a back up restore option

yes, But the OP doesnt have CWM yet, To get it he will need to unlock bootloader, Which resets the phone.

does it also delete the "sd card" contents?
I don't think that the stock recovery supports nandroid backup. you'll need at least an unlocked bootloader and a costum recovery go make a nandroid Backup. So Only way is crossing fingers when flashing recovery.

Lost nandroid

I went into recovery, wiped data/factory reset and cleaned my caches then went to restore my nandroid for mb1, but it said the md5 failed and couldn't restore it, so I rebooted the phone and now it's back to complete stock/unrooted. Is there a way to fix it and be able to restore my nandroid, or do I have to start fresh? I lost all my pics and apps, it's there a way to restore those?

What rom were you on originally before your nandroid restore failed? Can you find any of your pics using a File Explorer? Lastly, how did you verify that you have lost root: did you look in /system/xbin/su or download an app such as Root Checker to verify you have lost root?
I was only stock rooted. Was on the newest md3, and like I said I did all the wipes in CMW then went into restore backup and selected my nandroid of mb1 and pressed ok, but it said the md5 was mismatched. Couldn't figure anything out so I did a reboot and it was like a new phone.....no superuser, titanium backup wouldn't get SU permissions and it would only boot into stock recovery. Plugged the phone into laptop and saw the nandroid on the sd card but not sure how to reroot and fix the nandroid

The best I could suggest if you are truly unrooted is to re-root and unlock using Open1your1eyes0 thread in the dev section. I'm not well versed in the md5 mismatching for a nandroid failing unless you changed the name of the nandroid after it was completed?

Yes I just checked with rootchecker and it says I lost root. I did rename the CWM nandroid, but I've done that before on my wife's phone and it restored fine.. I'm downloading the files from the thread you listed above as I write. I had Tibu installed before, so that should be enough to restore my lost apps/pics/etc once I Odin back and gain root again?

Yea, try not to do that with CWM. I suggest using TWRP if you want to name backups since it allows you to do so natively. TWRP and CWM nandroids are not compatible so if you do switch, I suggest (if you can) restore your VRBMB1 nandroid using CWM, make a new backup using TWRP, then delete the entire CWM folder from your phone/sdcard.
I haven't done this before but you could see if this process works for you. If not, then start fresh via Odin and use TWRP so this doesn't happen again.
If you can still see the files using a file explorer, then TB should be able to locate and restore them if you know how to make it scan the entire device.

I realize that now! Going through the Odin process now, then custom recovery and unlocking the bootloader. By glancing at that link, it says that using different versions of CMW causes this issue. Go figure. Ugh

Will do! Just got used to CMW back in the day of our HTC evo 4g and stuck with it due to all the problems TWRP had back then

return to (mostly) stock via TWRP

I'm sure this has been answered... But the threads I've read on the subject do not answer my exact questions... Which are
1.to return to stock I simply have to flash the recovery I made before I flashed VenomONE right?
2. Do I do that via boot loader or through TWRP recovery itself?
3.can I make a back up of my current settings of Venom ROM and simply flash back and forth?
My whole reason behind this is I had only had this phone for a few days before I decided I wanted to try my hand at unlocking and root etc.... I want a chance to play with the stock ROM a little more to see if I like it any better ..
If my post belongs elsewhere or I can find these answers elsewhere I do apologize again...
Did u do a nandroid backup of Ur stock Rom before flashing venomrom? And yes make a backup of Ur current setup and u can go between the 2. And do this via TWRP
