It depends how you put it in terms. For example, jailbreak meaning installing a better ROM on your phone than the one you already have, and secondly, you can only jailbreak an iPhone being the term 'jailbreak' came from iDevices.

are you insulting me, because i'm not fat.

Jailbreak is a term use in iOS. In android, we root our phones. Why? Few reasons, to install custom ROM, it is mainly because that phone no longer receiving update, so have to rely on xda. 2nd, to over clocked your phone. 3rd , dislike skinned ui, example HTC sense , Samsung touch wiz and more. So they would go for pure android aka vanilla. Or some prefer cyanogen version. Anyway, welcome to android, you can find almost all information about your android phone here. Have a nice day

Google root + your device and carrier. It has worked for me as a new guy. Read up on it first and be careful as flashing roms and root can have permanent negative consequences. Just find your device here on xda and that should be a good starting point

First off what phone did you get? And if you are new to android, rooting, custom roms etc, I recommend you use the stock android your phone came with for a little to get familiar before you go changing things around.

we don't jailbreak android devices , as it is not needed here , but sometimes we root it to gain some special controlling over the device properties.
I would not recommend you to do so , until you get used to the new system and its abilities .

Just upgraged to a Nexus S

From a HTC Hero which I rooted and ran some awesome custom rom.
I'm wondering if there is any benefit of rooting the nexus s? Speed is already amazing.
I kind of miss the tinkering, but if there is no real benefit then I'm happy.
Root or not to root?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
it depends what you want to obtain from the tinkering
most people do it to OC
i do it for the fun of doing it
so other do it to fix certain things
so it really depends on your needs
It dont think there is anything that needs to 'fixed' its super fast and stock android is android the way Google intended.
I'll have to lay my rooting to rest as I can't personally see any benefit.

Well,
The whole reason we root and hack is to make these devices better.
They're already some awesome kernels for the Nexus S. Not to mention the "root" apps that are in the market. Just having the ability to backup and restore my whole system, incluuding apps, is enough reason for me to root.
We strive for higher clock speeds and memory access speeds.
You have to have root if you want to do any major theming.
I can go on and on. But i digress. Just do it!

iPhone 5

I have decided that when the REAL iPhone 5 debuts, im going to iOS, its more solid than Android... sure with android there are a variety but I would rather have one phone that can upgrade at the same time others of its kind upgrade instead of trying to hassle to *root* a phone n do all that other crap and risk bricking it just to stay current, well do that or buy another phone, its ridiculous actually.... and I saw a similar post to this one and that guy was right, Google has customization yes but when it comes down to it, it pains me to say but google is crap compared to apple as far as being current and stuff u knw? I agree that the iOS has its good points. But for full functionality of your own phone you have to jailbreak it. How is that different than rooting your android? I have had an iPhone 3Gs and 4 and neither of them have come close to offering me all that I can have and do with my Infuse. And guess what that's my opinion, it works for me and my needs. Am I putting the iPhones down? Not really, if you want to drive an off the showroom floor mid grade model that comes with a stock package that is as you buy it then go for it. Personally I prefer to know how my device works at its core as well as be able to modify that as I see fit, but again that's me. I will not buy another iOS device until they allow the freedom I have with my android. I own both Mac and Win machines and an Ubuntu and a Slackware machine so I'm not pro or anti apple I get a device that fits my needs. If you need an iPhone go for it but what's the point of spreading negativity in a forum where the iPhone is not the focus.

WHAT? Oh my, you're just proving minute by minute that you didn't research the best device for your needs before you made a purchase. You have no one to blame but yourself for your situation. Ignorance is bliss!

Don't root and flash G2x if you want full functionality!

Don't root and flash a ROM to your G2x if you want it to fully work. I rooted and flashed Eagles Blood. At first there were a few bugs which I worked out. Then I found out the main problem that is absent from most threads on how to root and flash your G2x. They don't mention you'll have no video! What? There was no video recording, no Netflix, no ESPN and any other app that just so happens to let you stream or record video. I'm just saying it would be nice to see a warning or something telling you about it. Also, there is a lot of network data connection issues no matter which ROM I used. Beware G2x owners! I get the whole use at your own risk thing but you lose a main capability of the phone. If I just wanted to call and text I wouldn't have a smartphone.

Wow, if you want complete functionality go with a gingerbread rom, like stock rooted, or cm7, not ics. If you read in the OP of ics roms here, it lists what problems there are: no video, somewhat video acceleration, meaning only a few things dont work, among other things.

You can get netflix, video recording and playback all working on the ICS roms as well if you try.

And video works on like every gingerbread ROM.

Sunster you are my hero lol.
The only reason why a lot of videos won't work on ICS is because its missing its video drivers. To compensate the tegra2 will try to render them with the processor but honestly it can't do as much as the GPU can. If you were to install a gingerbread based OS you will get all those functionality back. It may not be included in the description of ICS Roms anymore cause most people already know about ICS not having video drivers. Anyways if you are going to flash a new Rom I recommend Cyanogenmod 7 or Eaglesblood GB based Rom but those are just my personal preferences.

I'm with the OP on this one. Rooting and flashing is so over rated. You can modify and enhance your phone with almost anything in google market. Flashing was just a fad for phones back in 2007. With our modern phones and google market, not only is it unnecessary, but very risky to flash as mentioned by the OP.
It's much more preferable to flash with an official OEM ROM, since unofficial roms could be maliciously programmed, which makes me suspicious why alot of amatuer developers bash LG and Nvidia for trying to make sure there's no open back doors for bad intentioned programmers to hack unsuspecting newcomers.
Good grief

I'm with this guy. As a result of the dev community supporting this phone, I haven't completely lost it and gone on to make the sales rep who sold me this thing eat it in send me to jail fashion. And frankly...we must have some real upscale individuals flashing roms around here if they're worried about some dev seeing the mundane details of their lives...I'd hate to think what would happen if someone knew when I was running to the store because my girl said I needed to grab milk and eggs. If you're using your phone to do things with security risks (like sending your credit card info out into the void) might want to consider not doing those things in the first place...

The original post just remind us how difficult and chancy rooting and flashing are for any phone, and particularly for the G2x, which at the moment simply lacks the software to run ics with all its functionality. Flashing is never as easy as it's made out here, and I doubt it leads to satisfactory results for most people.

To root or not to root ..

What are your reasons for rooting your HTC one ?
what does rooting offer to better the experience .. ?
Personally I used to root simply to off the ads, but it hit me that I barely have any since I usually get the adfree paid versions.
I really want to root but have no incentive to, convince me .
Still for the ads, I accidentally clicked many of them in the browser. Greenify is a good reason too.

root
of coz you should root if there is a safe and reliable method available.
the main advantage of rooting is you can save tons of battery life by installing customs roms that comes with less bloatware.run the phone full screen.louder sound.stronger cell and wifi signal.speedier and smoother system. best of all u get the latest andriod version, which i believe HTC had disgustingly discontinue the update for htc one. gets roms like pac man or jellybam which are more stable. cheers

Androids are no more exciting......

The hype of android is now over. It has become a PC like thing against apple. So history is repeating itself. Yes we know they now have a large app base unlike in 2011, when the big titles were only on ios. But now things are changed. We all know that android turns into a giant and this transformation was rapid. But if we see in detail its just like microsoft and intel. A new processor with more hertz and a new windows. So now is the point when all the ics and jb devices can do everything alike besides games.
Kids who own their devices to play games are justified to get an upgrade but for a lil older folks and retired teens. I find hard to get a reason to upgrade to some different size, when i am so used to of my phone. Its been 2 years that i am having my phone. There are lot of phones in the market now some even more bigger and some slightly small. But there is no other phone with 5.3 inch screen size. Which i think is the ideal and max for the pocket.
The bad thing that happened is that i cant use even a slightly small phone because it feels very small.
Anyone agreeing with my view or any criticism is appeciated.

Android
Well there's loads of devices out there for Android, yet there are some form factors that I'd like to see on a high end phone but doesn't come...
For instance, I wanna see a Palm Pre like QWERTY portrait slider... Also a regular QWERTY candy bar phone...
Why do the manufacturer's think that Android doesn't need a physical keyboard? The ones that do come out with physical kbs these days are poor designs and low end phones. I can think of a few people in my family who would love an Android phone with a proper physical kb.
Development have been slow for 4.3, even in Nexus community. Some ROM builders/ teams have stopped development completely. That's something bad.
androids are cool
Actually since the security issues. People are not going custom or rooted. Plus going custom is what fascinates the teens and younger folks. Its also time consuming backing up data and restoring on the newly flashed system and then going back. People now simply wait for the official update, in the past it took even a year for ics to come but now the process is quickened.
Devs are not investing time to make custom rather they are going for app development.

Until when??? I have been doing this for 3 years. There is a point when you are fed up of just trying to make something perfect which according to you always have room for something new.
