Quick question. I bought this phone recently and it came with valhalla final pre-installed on it. I wanna flash an ICS based rom and I was just wondering if I can flash it coming from valhalla final or do I have to go back to stock in order to flash an ICS rom. I'm only asking since I read that some roms are BML and MTD and I'm a bit confused

You need to flash AntonX's Basic with a Twist kernel or bhundven's Blastoff kernel to flash ICS. Valhalla Final's version of CWM with not flash ICS properly.

Flash one of those kernels and follow the directions in the OP of the ROM you want.

Hey everyone I'm kinda new to the whole kernel flashing business and I'm trying to flash the UV Trinity kernel to my Nexus S. From what I've read I only need to flash the zip from recovery without having to do any sort of wiping. The main problem when I tried this is that the phone went into a boot loop and wouldn't go past the boot animation for the kernel. I'm not sure if it's because the kernel is based off of 2.3.4 and I'm currently running CM-7.0.3. Morfic's thread indicated that the kernel was made for CM7 so I don't know what's going wrong here.

You have a ROM based on 2.3.3, meaning it's not compatible with a kernel made for 2.3.4.
Try flashing the latest cm7 and then the kernel.

Would it work if I tried a CM7 variant that's based off of the 2.3.4 source? I'm going for a stable phone and unsure about the nightly builds at this point. If not I'll probably just wait CM to update and release the rom.

2.3.4 how to crack the original recovery? / System / bin can not find the recovery file
read the development forum and search. everything you need to know is there.
for 2.3.4 recovery you need to flash a modified kernel.
There's no CM7 for our phones available.
If you want to get on a 2.3.4 ROM, there's Audiophile FTW, Valhalla and ICBINB.
You can follow my guide to prepare your phone before flashing any of those ROMs.

You'll have to do the reading and research but to reiterate what was said: no cm7 for the sgs4g yet -you might read that it can work in the non4g models but be aware its also said those versions aren't compatible worth our phones. There are some good roms though. I use drhonk kg4 kernel, icbinb kh2 and the tweaks by dsexton. 2700 quadrant scores without oc, 3400 at 1.3ghz. The phone is excellent. Fast, sleek, and it works.

Available in China, GSM and WCDMA networks, I brush the CWM kernel yesterday, from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032, there is no stable ROM? Thank you.
Mr Jon,
now that you have modified recovery, you can flash any cwm gingerbread rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
though I wouldn't flash a KF rom, as those were early releases. try a KG or KH rom (KH are the newest).
This is my 1st time on this forum!! be gentle!
I have stock rom and trinity kernel, can i get OTA working?
you won't be able to install it regularly because you changed the kernel, but you can always flash a full 2.3.6 rom through cwm. i'm pretty sure you'll be put back on stock kernel though

I have ICS, and i was just wondering what would happen if i installed a gingerbread ROM? and just another question with kernals, if i download a kernal are some only for ICS and some only for GB?
thankyou.
Well you can flash Gingerbread rom and kernel and you will no longer have ICS. If you wanna go back to ICS just flash any ICS rom and Kernel you will be good.

There are usually dependencies between kernEL and non kernEL code - non kernEl code is referred to as "userspace"... Typically you can't just swap a kernel meant for one version of android with another, unless the manufacturer has done a great job of abstraction. Not so in the case of most phones.
thankyou both for your replies
Hello Guys,
I've got a few questions about upgreading my custom 2.3.4 to ICS.
Atm I'm using custom rom Cranium 3.1 based on XXKPH, with kernel 2.6.35.7-CL467143 [email protected] #1.
What should I do now, to get ICS on my SL.
1. Changing on stock rom ? If yes, then which one?
2. What with kernel ?
Thanks.
It doesnt maatters that which rom r u currently on but be on latest gb rom with cf root to be on safer side.
Then download cm9 zip from the respective thread then follow the instructions to install it on that thread.
Keep in mind its not completely bug free but still it is quite usable.

1. No need to change to stock rom if you just want to switch to ics, of your phone is rooted and had clock work mod, then you just need to flash any custom ics rom like remics, cm9 etc.
Then you can even change the kernel to vurrut or arindam or dhiru etc.
Firstly to consider, you're on kph. to have a stable base band, either flash kpq or kpu.
Follow this order
Xxkpe>xxkpu/kpq>root with bagaria.tar> ics rom> kernel(optional).
Search among the stickies on android development.
