I need a dedicated device to serve as both a GPS and a front-facing camera for car use. The economical solution is to use an Android phone. There are map apps that will let me download entire maps to the SD card so I'm good there, and don't even need cell service.
Can anyone tell me if the LG Optimus V is a good choice? Is anyone using the LG Optimus V in their car with GPS? Are you satisfied with the performance? Or should I install a custom kernel and overclock?
Thank you!
I have been using my P500 for GPS navigation as well, I am using Sygic and I am totally satisfied (using on hephappy's ICS without OC), luckily my set came with car charger and car docking so thats a great GPS assistant.

Thank you, good info! I'm going to install CM7 because I want the HW acceleration for the display.
Does your P500 have mobile service? I want to use mine as a standalone - no mobile service.
Sygic looks great! Does it support custom waypoints (POI)?
Thanks!
Yes I have mobile service but you can delete certain apps like phone and mms etc.
Sygic is great and I guess it does support custom POIs but you can have the trial version to know all about features.
I use my optimus v for navigation constantly. Works great. Battery life is less than great, but it's a super solid phone for the price. Camera is so so. It would be better with a flash.
With custom roms and overclock, i love my phone.

I don't think it does, but it does fine without it. There is an egl patch that forces gpu rendering, but idk if it makes a difference.

People please share your expreince. I like to which ROM is best becasue I am kind of tired of being stuck with gtg465x which gives me lots of issue with Internet speed.

Anyone try out GSInfuse? If so, how is the internet speeds and battery life compared to Infused?
Serendipity if you don't mind the occasional battery drain bug.
DlevROMInfuse for overall good stability and no battery drain bug.
With either ROM you can either have 1. good data speeds and no MMS or 2. Bad data speeds and MMS. Personally i don't care about MMS enough to lower my data speeds so i deleted the MMS APN and just left the "phone" for good data speeds.
Dlev is the best out. Awesome data killer battery and almost instant GPS lock.
hey ya'll watch this!!
Been running Dlev for a few days and I'm torn. I really like S7 but the out of the box setup for Dlev and the speed of that Rom are amazing. Battery has been excellent, not hard to theme and it has many customization options removing the need to do a lot of custom visual work (unless you dont like green as much as i do.....). It's just a visually appealing fast Rom. I'll have to give it a few more days at least to verify if it's as stable as S7 but so far I have had no issues, and the included email app version is the best "stock" email I've used. It also comes with a slick Twiz 4 clone which is smooth as silk and is pretty easily themed in itself. Not a fanboy yet, but might be if the battery keeps lasting as long as it has over the last few days. 15-18 hours of moderate use (dl's, XDA, youtube streaming Tosh, and some modern combat 2) and still usually have 20-30% left at the end of the day.
Edit: I do like to undervolt quite a bit and I havent OCd this yet so that may also be helping the battery but honestly I havent felt the need to OC this yet because it's so smooth. I dont normally OC until at least 3 days of issue free running on a new Rom anyway though.....

No ROM has been perfect for me yet, but MIUI has been the best. If any ROM has working bluetooth to connect to a PS3 controller (Stupid Samsung framework bluetooth stack...) and has video out capability I'll be using that one forever.
Right now it's either one or the other with CM7/MIUI having proper bluetooth but broken HDMI out, or working HDMI out on some of the other ROMs but bad bluetooth >_>

Cm7 for the speed of it. I had to set the APN to get data working

The reason I want both HDMI out and PS3 bluetooth is so that I can use my phone as a game console. I already have an MHL cable sitting in my drawer waiting for a ROM that does both, and then any time I want to play say... SNES, GBA, PS1 etc. I don't have to start up my computer and load an emulator that's already on my phone.
How about someone running each rom available and posting various comparisons and contrasts in a good format for side by side comparison?

I'm pretty sure DlevROM's Bluetooth works. Haven't had anyone say it was broke. I will test it when I get home.
I'm not a developer but I try to play one on XDA. DlevROM Yo!
I went from infuse to s7 to miui and back to infuse.
I found infuse with infusion kernel with 1.6 oc and healthy uv was the snappiest although battery life isn't as good as s7., most likely due to the oc. Nonetheless I prefer one of the gb roms over miui because i found they're far more stable with better hardware functionality as they're tailored to the phone. Miui has to cover so many bases I found it was spread thin and did nothing great, beyond the theming capability which was excellent.
Edit: id like to add my bluetooth works fine and hooking my phone to my car is smoother as I kept getting mount errors with miui
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I've tried most Roms out there and I have to say I like dlev rom the most in terms of speed and theming. However I always end up back on infused. It is the most stable one for me. But when I get bored I will jump back onto dlev in a heartbeat until it does something screwy that scares me away (inevitable). Good ole infused hasn't done me wrong yet. Not one complaint about it. So what if HDMI doesn't work. I wouldn't be using it anyways. Bluetooth is always perfect and data speeds are more than fine here in Orlando.

Anyone have a sense of how battery life is on this yet?
Also, does pinch zoom work on more sites? (One thing that is great about Sense browsers is you can zoom in on almost any web content...)
Thanks.
it drains about 10% an hour on mid usage, probably wont last you a day.
the browser is absolutely phenomenal, loving it! however if you are looking to flash kwiboo's version im having some random data disconnects, nothing major, just a heads up.
hope that helps
Battery seems okay. Feels like I've been toying around with ICS all day just checking everything out like the new People app and updated GMail, Messaging and Music. Also played some games. And I'm only down to 85%.
Battery life seems on par with Gingerbread (Oxygen) that I was using before the switch so I'm happy with that. Surprising too considering it's working with a hacked 2.6 kernel.
The browser works beautifully. GPU acceleration is a true gift from the gods, and pretty much the one thing I was really waiting for with ICS. Pinch to zoom works on all sites I've tried.

No noticeable drain from the SDK port as of right now.
Will test throughout a few days to see if it's on par with Gingerbread.
Wow, sounds good.
I may have to pick up another Nexus on Craigslist.
What is not working? (4g, WiFi? anything else?)
Also, does the install change the kernel? Does it change the radio?
(fyi: I used to use james bond and netarchy kernels, and battery life was good enough...)
@hyakuman: in terms of pinch zoom: does text repaginate, or does it just go off the sides of the screen so it's impossible to read without scrolling?

Wifi is working actually, but signal bars don't show.
4g not working, USB storage mount not working, video recording not working, something else and maybe hardware acceleration not fully working.. and well some apps need update for ICS compatibility, but that's not the fault of the rom.
All in all it's very good for a first release.

seriously asking people not to flash this? Care to elaborate on why you would say such things? Look everyone's phones are different and I will just give my experience and let others choose to flash or not. I have ran every possible ics rom or port I could get my hands on from beezy's, kwiboo's, morpheus, and the very latest which is a port of koush's crespo version now on 4g. I have had the most sucess with kwiboo v2 4g after the flashing of the eri fix. Used it all day at work probably 11 hours on battery(franco kernel oc'd) with moderate to heavy use including youtube(on wifi) during lunch. Flashed the koush port an hour ago(clean install) all is well(camcorder works) TB restored all of my apps with a quick settings change(app processing>interactive) hope this answers a few questions.

I would say that the battery life is good if you flash another kernel as well. I'm currently testing Glados kernel with Brainmaster's tweaked ICS v4.
Browser is really good. Web pages load really quickly. zoom can be a little sketchy on sites with only desktop pages.

Exactly, it's good for the fact that this lousy g2x can't keep a signal where I live, even though my old phone could. I have unlimited talk anyway, as you say, but that's no good if I drop calls all the time.
I had the MT4G before this G2x. And MIUI on that was 100% stable and was absolutely fast and bug free. So that phone kinda set the bar high for me when it came to MIUI.
Now MIUI on the G2x is good, but not nearly as good as what I'm used to so I stick to CM7. For my experience, MIUI for G2x slows down and has random annoying bugs here and there. But it's still a daily driver. Just not as fast nor good as MIUI has been for other phones like the MT4G.
Hope that helped.

I used MIUI for about 3 weeks. It was a great ROM in terms of customization, but to me it just never felt fast enough. Also, after a while, I started to miss the original android UI. Flashed CM7 again. (For stock feel and no CarrierIQ)

Yeah, I had those problems as well... Not to mention Wifi calling not actually working either. The ringtone issue bugged me quite a bit.
Reboots seem to be a hardware issue on the g2x I'm beginning to believe. My phone does not do it near as often as many, but then again, I didn't buy mine till the end of October, so it was preloaded with GB and the new baseband.
sorry I meant 1.11.18...I never really had faith in LG but it seems to be the best phone I could find in Tmobile at the time so I had no choice....

I have the latest version of Whitehakx MIUI and I love so much about it but cant get a couple things to work and will probably switch to a stock based ROM because of it. my issues with MIUI are
1. Internal storage is unavailable to most apps except for camera and market. for instance I can NOT download any files to the internal storage and many apps say the SD is not in a mounted state. I do NOT use and external SD card.
2. GPS is not great, it's manageable...but only accurate to about 40 meters and thats after messing with GPS Test before using google maps.
If anyone has some insight on these two issues I'd be willing to pay via paypal if it leads to a fix. Also might be helpful to know I'm not on T-mobile, but Cincinnati bell. Thanks
MiUi + Morfics t15 = fast as hell. But you may experience some overheating.
MiUi + Faux v0.4.5 CM = reliable performance with awesome speed
Cm7 + Morfics t15 = Not so stable, but fast as hell.
Cm7 + Faux v04.5 CM = Awesome battery life with awesome fast and reliable performance.

Are you able to get 4g with your carrier? I'm asking because Google Maps uses your data connection as well to establish your location. Have you tried using a different navigation app that doesn't use data? Like NAVIGON perhaps...
I really appreciate your advice on ROMs. I might try CM7, are there multiple versions of that ROM?
I do have 4G with Cincinnati Bell so I dont think thats the issue, but I also haven't tried NAVIGON to see how that responds.

I personally loved MIUI. i used the galnet miui 1.11.9 for about 3 weeks and it was really sweet. Lag is minimal, speed is good as well. One thing that i didnt like was that the battery ran out a bit faster than when i was on CM7. I am back on CM7 now mainly because i forgot to backup MIUI when trying a new rom.
Overall, it is a great rom and i prefer flashing it, just remember to backup your current rom before.

G-ma's stock G2x. Updated software?
You mentioned the speed of the stock build. I am curious if GRANDMA has the recent software update. It's V21Y and brings the phone up to Gingerbread 2.3.4 (as opposed to 2.3.3 previously. My wife has been on it over a month now w/o rebooting. It's an awesome stock build! My G2x is rooted and running recent Cyanogenmod real well too. The stock is so good now that even I sometimes restore a rooted stock nandroid for ZERO bugginess!
Joining in the dredging of an old thread - I loaded V21y on both my and my wife's phone - both run slower with noticeably more lag than stock Froyo. But no dreaded Black Screen Of Death, which is what my wife hated (she is on call sometimes). So I guess I'm happy. Someday I should try a dev rom I guess... But I NEED WiFi calling and a2dp - not sure if I can get that in a dev rom...

Yea she got the update 2.3.4, the stock build is awesome fast, faster than the htc sense obviously but I still love the htc sense animations are just better on sense if sense could be just as fast as stock id loved it even more lol. Stock makes a big difference even the single core G2 is fast on stock faster than the mytouch even with 2 cores. I've done the test I tap the menu at the same time on the 3 phones and the mytouch is the slowest. However you do see the difference when not on the UI, for example on apps, the browser, and loading obviously the mytouch wins on that aspect 1.2 ghz dual core

theres still some minor issues with the 2.3.4 got one rare SOD and a few odd reboots. cm7 has none of the issues. guess thats the tradeoff for proper quality of calls and a working gps.

*Francos Gaming Kernal v20 (Not sure on the name)
*Overclocked at 728mHz with SmartAssV2
Also, I suggest a new rom, and also deleting bloatware and stopping unnecessary apps before playing will help!
So yeah, hope it helps,

Hey there!
I play Tiny Tower, and it works perfectly fine for me! Of course, I own an Optimus One, but I've changed it ALOT.

If i change my Original Stock Rom to CyanogenMod 7, will all my apps and data be gone? Backing up is very troublesome. And what do you mean by bloatware? Any examples?
CyanogenMod 7 is the most tweakable ROM, so that's why most reccomend it. By using Titanium Backup you can backup/restore ALL apps with their data as well as the phone accounts (/data/system/accounts.db) and other stuff such as widgets, bluetooth pairings etc...
I usually go for a full reset when I flash a new rom, more so because I like the feel of a new rom without apps.
Bloatware. Ahh I hate it. Depending on what phone provider you are on, there may or may not be so called "bloat apps". Virgin Mobile AU doesn't have any thankfully, and even if your phone from the US etc has it, a new rom won't c;
Enjoy your new rom should you get one!

I'm also one of those who play tiny tower.
btw I'm running Mik's CM7 6.5.8 with goldleaf 2.6.32.9 but the game's still running smooth. I think's it's CM7's tweaks that matters.
I play it only when I'm connected to wifi. because I don't have data( long story).
I'm running the cyanogenmod 9 Lang rom.
stock .35 kernel and no over clock. I just raised my minimum to 600 also so I'm at 600 all the time when I'm using it.
if u r worried about rooting or flashing roms or kernels don't worry its safe. just look at this blog I found its great for ppl that nees help.

i suggest using rashed97's cm10 rom, because it implements project butter, and comes with overclock kernel of up to 787 mhz it is amazingly smooth. project butter is really working great.
also try this
