[Q] Probably the noobest of noob questions... - HTC Inspire 4G

I have an Inspire 4g, and I want to get Jellytime R29 on my phone, but every link I find to root my phone, is either dead, or incomprehensible.
Where do I root, how and how can I get Jellytime?
I suck, and am kind of dumb, I know. I am sorry.

I had a Samsung Infuse before, and I just used a one click root thing, and a loader to load Heimdall Gingerbread on it. Is there anything like that for the Inspire 4g? I see an Ace Hack kit, but it says taht I have to be on a certain release or something...I have no idea. :/

Yes, use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit. More detailed instructions are in the PDF in post #7 in the Ace Think Tank thread linked in my signature.

I was afraid it was going to be more difficult than my infuse haha. Well, a little work is okay to get JB or ICS instead of this terrible Gingerbread that I've been stuck on for ages.

As long as you make sure to read the manual thoroughly its not too difficult.

Of course. I am trying to factory reset my phone, but the option is not even present. I am under settings, privacy and there is no "factory reset phone", just "Display message text" "Backup my settings" and "Automatic restore" (Both of those last two are only check boxes, not actual commands)
Got it

Stock gingerbread is terrible, the custom gingerbread roms are quite nice

Hm well I tried running it, but it said I needed to downgrade. So, I factory reset my phone and tried running the AAHK and it seemed to have worked, until the end when it said that it failed.
Now, I am trying to just get gingerbread back, and apparently I can't?? Argh. When I rooted my Infuse 4g from Samsung, it was pretty simple. A couple of one-click things and I was done. This is the complete opposite for this HTC phone.
I am kind of out of it from my meds (had surgery yesterday) and am finding this whole damn thing to be difficult to understand. :/
For waht it's worth, I am on Froyo 2.3 and build 3.20.502.52

Yes but this:
High Level Steps (Do NOT ask me to explain each one – it ain’t gonna happen):
Unlock the bootloader using the HTC DEV bootloader unlock process.
Download att-ace-30-isboot.zip and unzip it (don’t forget to check MD5)
fastboot flash boot boot.img
relock bootloader
Optional: flash/install cwm and back up
Run the newest Hack Kit (now updated for use with this IS Boot)
makes absolutely no sense to me. Again, as stated in my original post, I am pretty dumb. D:

This is as easy as one could explain it. Here is the link.

If it's not one thing, it's another. I can at least follow and understand these directions, but I cannot stay logged in to HTCDev. :/ I made a new account, tried logging in with the right password, and it was incorrect. I power cycled my router/modem, I tried going icognito in case there were some funny somethings going on, I tried even using IE (ew) and that didn't work. I can't log in, and even made a second account, nope.
BAH.
I think I am just destined to not get this done. I was going to just buy a nexus 4, but of course they are sold out, so I wanted to just put a JB rom on my infuse to hold me over for now.

I am still trying to get into the HTCDev bootloader, but I am unable to get logged in.
I tried contacting them through their form last night but have not heard anything back. I did some googling and did not find an answer, but I do see that this is a common issue with the site. Anyone on here have a fix for being unable to log in to HTCDev? Thank you.

Yes, I have. I am using Chrome, but tried using IE and even Firefox, both yielded same results. I even tried to use my phone itself to log in just to see if it'd work, and through Dolphin Browser and stock Browser, it did not work.

Yeah that's strange. Maybe that part of their site is down. I would just wait for them to contact you. You could also try turning off your firewall and windows defender, possibly any anti virus as well.

[TIP] Running the RUU to get back to stock

I ran into a few problems getting back to stock until I remembered a minor detail from my HTC Hero days.
You need to download and install HTC Sync get it here install it.
Reboot your computer
make sure the phone is NOT in USB debug mode and is in charge only mode.
the proper drivers will install. you'll know it's done right if you see ADB pop up as one of the drivers installed. You'll see a warning that HTC sync isn't detecting your phone and that's ok.
Then run the RUU exe all should work fine.
Get the RUU exe from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224 This is FROYO
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959 This one is Gingerbread

Good sir I can not thank you enough for helping me get my phone back. i don't even mind all the bloatware now. Too bad I can't use the thanks button more than once. I really appreciate it.
Happy to be of service. I can't dev my way out of a paper bag, well I've never tried, but I can share what I do know.
I tried to run the RUU but it failed twice. Both times it would get about 70% finished and it would stop with an Error 110 which says that a file is either open or corrupted. Then it tells you to download the RUU again and run it again, which I did but got the same results. I downloaded it with the anti virus and firewall turned off. Is there another site to download the file from?

Either flash a different rom via Clockwork Mod or run the RUU. If you choose the RUU, be sure HTC Sync is installed, USB Debugging is checked and Fastboot is unchecked.
Thank you! It works!
Just used this thread to get my Inspire back to stock before taking it back for a refund and cancelling service. Decided to go with the HTC Evo3d from Sprint. This method worked returning the phone back to the latest (Gingerbread) and unrooted it from Cyanogen (CM7) ROM. Thanks a ton for sharing your wisdom!

I take it you're not S-OFF? HTC (and probably others) decided they didn't want users reverting to older versions. You'll have to root, get S-OFF, before you can revert, but if you're rooted, you might as well just use the new andTether from google code:

Just found out at Best Buy that my phone is crap. The memory is out and I have no apps installed, my HD card is empty except for the standard stuff, and I get error that I need to free up memory or something like that. Guy told me to UNroot my phone and call AT&T.
So, this thread is all I need to do that???? Can it really be this easy????
thanks so much,

credits to this guide: http://www.zenilshroff.com/how-to-root-htc-sensation-android-2-3-gingerbread-smartphone/
1. First download the Gingerbreak.apk file.
2. Save on your computers desktop.
3. Connect the phone to your computer. (do not connect using htc sync)
4. Mount SD card as flash drive as you generally do for USB cable file transfers.
5. Copy the downloaded Gingerbread apk file to SD card root.
6. You should have any File Manager (e.g., Astro File Manager) on your phone. If not, download from Market. These are generally free apps.
7. Disconnect your phone from computer and launch File Manager. You will find in the menu of the phone.
8. Follow the onscreen instructions on File Manager to install APK to your phone from SD card root. You may also use the default application installer software to do this.
9. After installation completes, open the APK.
10. Press ‘root’ button. Simple, isn’t it?
11. The APK exploit will run for some time. Usually it runs for around 10 minutes. Your phone will be rebooted. In case it takes more than ten minutes for auto reboot, please reboot it yourself. Not to panic, this happens a lot of times.
12. Your device is now rooted. Congrats!
13. Make sure that SuperUser app is installed and is running. This is very important for you to enjoy the benefits of rooting.
In order to test if your phone has been successfully rooted, just click a screenshot of your phone. That should show that your phone has been rooted.
Yeah, but does it REALLY work?

Gingerbreak exploit is patched on the SGS II so doubt that will work. Also if phone needs to reboot, no way will root persist due to signed locked bootloader. Go ahead and try but we will need some L33t devs to break this phone.

It would be great if we could get this partial root. I personally don't mind not being able to flash custom ROM, but it is very important to me to be able to use some apps that require root permissions like adfree or titanium backup. From what I understand, this 'half-root' should not be very difficult to achieve cause it is not needed to mess with the bootloader for this purpose. The only requirement is to be able to uninstall htc sync for some time.
Here also a link detailing the differences between root levels and clarifying vocabulary. I am posting this cause it has been very useful for me to help understand, so it might also serves others..

[Help] No Sound after trying to root Inspire 4G

I downloaded Bubby's One Click program (3-21-11_RC2.exe) and here is exactly what happened:
1. I know this may be my undoing but I did not turn off antivirus, it found a virus and cleaned it. Knowing my luck it cleaned something out that was critical in the steps.
2. I got the goldcard done (website was down the other day). I got it downgraded and now I have a working debranded Froyo Inspire 4g on 1.32.405.6. But with no sound.
Now something went wrong during a command prompt part and the program did not progress. I tried rerunning the program but it does not progress as it should.
What do I do now? I am going to try follow Cyanogen steps on their Wiki but is their an easier fix?
You need to completely disable or even uninstall your anti virus. Then, delete all of the one click root files. Then redownload, and start over.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
You could push rage to your phone to root it you can still root it with the downgraded rom. You don't have to start from the beginning. Just the part that pushes rage after you turn you anti virus off and redownload the gui.
The downgraded rom does not have the right audio drivers which is why you have no sound.
Also next time please search as there are many many many threads about this.
Mods please close.

I will do a search for how to push rage to the phone. Remember the 500mb program does not exactly let you pick and choose the point where to start.

use the hack kit. you can even use the older hack kit. It doesn't really matter the size of the program, its how the program is scripted.
There are many threads of downgraded inspire with no sound, the solution is flashing a rom, though you cannot do that because you are not rooted nor are you s-off.
your options.
1. Flash back to stock and restart the whole process.
2. Push rage from adb, then run rage through turminal emulator.
3. Use the hack kit, because you can choose where to start in the proccess, ie. Pushing rage and rooting.
Try using the hack kit. Start with menu option number3.

[Q] Does anyone know what's wrong with this screen?

I was trying to update my mom's Infuse to ICS, then all of a sudden this (attached) happened. Heimdall had just given me the libusb.dll error (I needed to update the bootloader cause I kept getting rainbows in CWM), so I was unplugging the phone so I could get the right drivers.
I have a horrible feeling I did something very wrong. I can't imagine why what I was doing would have caused this though, since the cmd had gone back to a default state after giving the error.
Is there any way to fix this?? Thanks a ton in advance!

can you get it into download mode...?
if so run the one click again and you might have to check the box for bootloaders, on the second run...meaning I would run it twice...
It does that immediately on power up. Doesn't even get to the Samsung screen. Odin will recognize the phone, but when I try to flash a return to stock package (which I used earlier perfectly fine), it says the md5 is invalid.
Like I said, I never even got to the point of installing the bootloader since I forgot about the drivers. Are you saying I should install the drivers and try to flash the bootloader again?
Thanks so much for the help! I've never had this much trouble with a phone before
EDIT: I'm a dumbass. since I couldn't see the screen, I forgot to press up again after entering download mode. Odin is now in the process of installing the aforementioned return to stock package. And I think it worked!
You have no idea how grateful I am of you for pointing that out! I feel kind of dumb for not trying it, but when the screen looked like that I could only assume there was no functionality!
THANKS AGAIN! Times a million!

What EXACTLY gave you the idea to put your mother's phone on a ROM that half works and has many bugs? Just trying to understand... I could have done this to my friend's mom's atrix, but I didn't because the stock ROM will always have the least bugs for unpopular devices like ours. (ones that don't get official support for CM or AKOP or anything)

whooo there...slow your roll...
the op has the options to put what he wants, and actually if you have been tracking the ICS/CM9/AOKP threads they have made leaps in the smashing of bugs....actually very stable and good to go now, seeing how just months ago we didn't even have any ver of ICS, and yes it takes homework to install..
and you kept stock on your friends Mommy phone well that was between you and him and Mommy...
so long story short....as far as unpopular, I see this device being sold and for a high demand on CL and Ebay...with all the support given here...that is my IMHO...as is yours

First of all, every once in a while, she asks me if there are any updates yet.
Second, there's only a short list of insignificant bugs mentioned in the ICS topics.
I flashed GB on it a while back, and I figured since CWM and everything was set up already I wouldn't have a problem; flash, reboot, flash again, done. Unfortunately, it wasn't flashing the second time for whatever reason, and I figured it had something to do with the now half-functional CWM.
Anyway, to those of you who weren't unreasonably judging me, and rather decided to help: Thank you, the phone is now back up and running!

LOL, woooooooootttttttt
Same thing happened to me. What I did was send my phone back to Samsung tell them everything ( except about rooting) they will email you a label then ship it off and get back in about 1 week. They will put stock gingerbread on it. Hopes this helps.

yes, currently software version 1.85 is rootable. i would strongly recommend staying away from any ONE-CLICK rooting methods, as you may inadvertently OTA yourself. one click asks you to check for updates, but back then there wasn't an update to be found. if you do one click, and you do begin to update, quickly run a factory reset to get out of the OTA
once you OTA, you can never root or unlock your phone. (that's what happened to me)

Well does anyone know a current good root method to unlock bootloader and gain root?

Use this one click:

I disagree with the other poster. Sure, you're going to check for updates, and if the one-click root does not work, it will start to download the update. The update is 100's of mb, so you have plenty of time to go and manually change the date in your settings. Just add two days. This will immediately confuse the server, and it corrupts the download and stops right away. Then try the root process again. It took me many tries of adding two days (got somewhere near the end of August), but low and behold, it finally was successfully.
Also, at any point feel free to do a factory reset and start again. All of the people's recent experiences are near the end of the thread I posted above.
FYI, I did this 3 days ago on my phone.

i, unfortunately, was not bright enough to realize all of this, and it was not spelled out clearly, so i ended up OTA'ing. if you are competent enough to do what is quoted here, then it works.
Got mine 3 weeks ago. ONE CLICKS not working at all for 1.85
SUPERCID is the one that worked for me.

Here is the link.
I couldn't get CWM recovery to work. Flashed TWRP and very happy with that.

Well, you're competent enough to be getting 2x better fuel economy than me!
How about reading a little and using the manual method? You should have no problem with that one.

Given the fact that this thread started with a question that has been answered tens, if not hundreds of times, I suspect that "reading a little" is not an option for the OP

Yeah.. CWM isn't supported by the One X, TWRP is.
So if anyone new is reading this, please avoid CWM. It'll be of benefit for you.
