root ota jelly bean - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how do i root the ota jelly been update?

you can't yet. If you want root you will have to flash back to ICS, Root, Download Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, backup SU, temp unroot, OTA to JB, restore root.

Thanks, GoCliff. Unfortunately, my XDA/Google-fu has failed me and I'm not finding instructions on how to flash back to ICS.
Any tips?

Get Matt's utility... phone into fast boot mode. And flash back

you can SBF back to ICS using RSD Lite, and its super easy to do. Shouldn't be too hard to find instructions too

Can someone post or link to instructions how to flash back to ICS.

Seconded. I would very much like an explanation that's Linux-friendly as well if someone knows one.

One other question for those in the know. Will instructions for the Maxx also apply to the Maxx HD? I know there are some physical differences between the phones, in addition to the screen resolution, but are there other significant internal differences that make rooting & ROMs incompatible between them?
EDIT: same question for HD vs Maxx HD. Significant differences, other than the capacity of the battery, that will cause ROM & instruction incompatibility?

Here is the link I used. Once you SBF back to ICS and root your phone make sure you download voodoo and protect root and then temp unroot. Then there will be 2 system updates. The first one is pretty small and doesnt take too long. The second one is Jelly Bean and takes forever to download. After Jelly Bean is done installing you can open up voodoo and restore root.
Works like a charm, did it to my phone and my wife's phone yesterday.

Questions belong in the Q&A Section.
The signature verification failed because SCV7 is based on our ICS leak. Which is TOTALLY different than the OTA update you recieved. There are currently no ROMs available for the firmware you are on.

You should be flashing SCV7 though bootmenu bootstrap. or other cwm based recovery... not stock

Possibly that rom is only for the leak ics not for the ota? And you dont use stock recovery you have to use bootmenu or safestrap to install.

If you're coming from the official OTA for ICS, and tried to flash SCv7 (which is based on our AT&T leak) you likely have soft bricked your device. You cannot flash an unofficial leak version of a ROM to an official ICS ROM, you should have thought this through a little better. I'm sorry to say, but you're probably S.O.L. (Google that, if needed)...

No you cannot fxz back from the official ota. You're bricked mate, sorry dude, send in for a replacement.
While you're at it read the sticky in the general section about why we all recommend to NOT to OTA to ICS.
There have been many warnings about this for over month.
Best of luck to you.

I've bricked my atrix 2 and reinstalled the original rom with an application from Motorola that let me force the original back on my device. But I did not have ics. So I'll look up the application and the original rom. Later tonight or tomorrow.

[Q] Rooted but not unlocked

I rooted my device using an app from an old guide long ago. I am still on stock with no custom recovery or rom so basically rooted factory ice cream sandwich. I did one Asus update and used ota root keeper to keep root. Now Asus has pushed me the jellybean update envied I'm not sure the best way to go about rooting and such. The only caveat is I might sell and not sure if I want to unlock the boot loader or not. Should I? And if so which guide do I follow? Thanks all.

Yes probably long ago. But searching through hundreds of pages would do me no good. I am just unsure of what to do in this situation. Which I havent seen others in. Merry Christmas to you too bud
Also, nice going with the "I'm gonna have an attitude but say something seemingly nice at the end" post. Very original of you.
So how about this, should I just unroot with the same tool I used and follow one of the guides to unlock and root with custom recovery and rom? I am on 4.0.3 as of now. Thanks

Right from the get-go. Regardless...
Ensure superuser binary current.
Having ES File Explorer or another like app is a nice-to-have. Keeps system mounted as r/w if you need to get to system/bin.
You already know about OTA Rootkeeper. 100% stock required. Temp unroot.
Apply OTA updates. Reenable root with OTA Rootkeeper. Do NOT manually apply updates - you WILL lose root.
That is the process. Go back to the beginning and work your way forward to find all of the posts. You will see what worked and where people messed up. Don't take my word for it - it's out there.

So what about if I want recovery and roms?
Unlock is your only option.

Ok so I should just unroot with this app and then follow one of the guides?
On a train for 2 hours with signal dropping out often. Do you want to stay stock or not? Just asking - no sarcasm here?

As in stock rooted with unlocked bootloader and custom recovery? Or stock as in using OTA rootkeeper and updating?

If, and I mean if, the asus boot unlocker works for you. does not for a lot of people. appears to be a serial# issue at asus. if you can unlock you can do anything you want - jb or ics.

if you are rooted, just install an ICS ROM. (it will also block any JB OTA)
if you are not rooted - get rooted.

Well, I know another way... But it can take time...
Get the Stock imgs for Xoom and flash them (beware you'll lost ALL your data, even your precious photos and songs!), then you update until ICS again...
Or get rooted.

[Q] 4.1.2 Update ** Lost Root ***

Oh god please help me!
-- Have Droid RAZR Maxx HD on Verizon
-- Was rooted on 4.1.1
-- Followed instructions on here to keep root while upgrading to 4.1.2
-- Mistake I seem to have made ---> took the upgrade from the Motorola Utility when connected to PC instead of OTA
-- Now when I go to Voodoo ... there is no option to restore root!
Please god help me ... I really need root... :crying::crying::crying:
Any kind soul have a step by step instructions for me to get root back??
Need to be a little more specific on your device brand. Like if your on the xt926 consumer edition like me then your stuck on 4.1.2 because u can't downgrade ur firmware to go back to ICS and get root.
However dev editions or other variants may be able to obtain root again.

Frock that's what I thought but was holding out a little hope. Yes XT926. This blows ... so that WAS the mistake? Not doing the OTA update and instead the connecting to PC and doing it from the Moto utility?? I assumed it's the same thing so wasn't careful about that.
Thanks.

BTW .. why is rooting Motorola such a pain ... I love this phone for it's battery life but I may go back to Samsung phones ... at least there it's crazy easy to root, change roms, etc.
Rooting Motorola is such a pain because of the locked boot loader IMO. I have root because instead of flashing the new update I used voodo and took it strictly ota with my 4.1.1 rooted device.
